KapEye...Back For Eight Season winter home, and he has been entertaining tourists and locals ever since. To date, KapEye has recorded four CDs all of which feature his original songs. His latest, KapEye Halfway There, like his previous two, Set My Soul Free and Just Another Day in Paradise were written after coming to Tortola and you can clearly hear the island beat. Reggae, acoustic and Buffett styles come through loud and clear in contrast to his first CD, Semi which is more reminiscent of his early days in the US. So catch KapEye this season at Myett’s where he plays Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and grab a keepsake CD at their gift shop. When asked about how it feels to be back he said, "After 10 years I still love coming back to Myett's and playing to the sailing crowd and locals, it’s like coming home."
Over the holidays, after a long day at the beach we headed over to Myett’s and soon we were settled in amongst the crowd enjoying the sunset and the performance by their seasonal happy hour headliner – KapEye. Back for an amazing eighth season, KapEye describes his music as a combination of Jimmy Buffett, classic rock plus a smattering of his own original songs. He jokes that he is a poor man’s Jimmy Buffett…”he got the money and I got the hair.” Born in Philadelphia, KapEye started playing music from an early age. He began with the saxophone, but soon switched to the guitar and harmonica, claiming he could meet more girls this way! After starting a career as an English teacher, he formed a classic rock band called Nighthawk in upstate New York where they opened for groups such as Survivor, Badfinger and the infamous duo Cheech & Chong. After retiring from his “day job”, he came to Tortola where he discovered his own paradise and landed himself a gig at Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay playing the happy hour set. He now calls Tortola his

Christi Lukasiak pulls back curtain on Season 2 of ‘Dance Moms’ “A year ago, I was sitting on my porch with a Flip camera talking about how crazy my dance studio is,” says Christi Lukasiak, cuddling her toddler daughter, Clara, while on break from shooting an episode of the runaway Lifetime Tuesday reality hit Dance Moms. “A year later, we’re on national television and heading into our second season!” Fans recognize the bold, blond 30-something as unofficial leader of the four put-upon mothers united by their daughters’ training at the Pittsburgh-based Abby Lee Dance Company — and the dressings-down they are regularly afforded by the company’s largerthan-life dictator of dance, Abby Lee Miller. When the show debuted last July, the mix of preternaturally talented girls thriving as competitive dancers even as the adults around them regularly lost their minds proved irresistible to everyone from dance-obsessed little girls and love-struck little boys to fellow dance moms and vocal detractors. “I’ve always been a fan of reality television, so I think I personally knew what to expect,” says Lukasiak of auditioning for the series with her 10year-old daughter, Chloe. “It’s unnerving to watch because you’re thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I’m really putting myself out there, and I’m letting myself be

judged!’ But I went into it with open eyes. I do everything full-out — that’s my personality — so I knew I was going to be someone who formed very, very divided camps. People were either going to get me or really, really not get me.” Lukasiak does take umbrage to interviews Miller has given suggesting Abby Lee and her students were never auditioned and only came as a package deal with the nuttiest mothers the producers could find. “The children absolutely auditioned, too,” she says. “I have Chloe’s audition tapes saved on my computer. They needed to make sure that the girls were talented dancers, and I think that they wanted to make sure that the girls were each someone that America could root for, too. I was a little taken aback when (Miller) said, ‘It had nothing to do with the girls’ talent; it was all based on the mothers’ crazy obsessions.’ That may have been her perception, but it wasn’t the truth.”

Ask Koren Ask Koren Goodbye...Gone But Not Forgotten Ladies and gentlemen as we pull the curtains down on 2011, let us give ourselves a round of applause. We made it and we are now embarking on the adventure that is 2012. The year has ended and we survived it. Often times in the past 12 months, you might have felt as though you were ready to give up. Some of you might have experienced the gnawing pain of losing a family member, you might have felt the betrayal of being cheated on, the overwhelming loneliness of being newly single or the desperate sadness at being rejected time after time. The person might be gone, but the good times spent with them do not have to be forgotten. 2012 is here and we have the hope of new beginnings. Some persons were afflicted with illnesses that caused physical torment and exhausted all their finances. Their bodies became wracked with pain and deformed, yet they survived. Some were healed and the pain is gone, but the trials they endured and the persons who stood by their sides during their ordeal will never be forgotten. Others carry their afflictions with them into 2012 and will continue to fight their battles with the help of their support systems. Mistakes were made. Money was wasted. There were some bad decisions. Some persons indeed had bad experiences during 2011, but that year is finished

and a new year is looming ahead. The year was not all bad. Many of you graduated from school and are embarking onto new paths. Some are newly in college and some are working. 2011 is gone, but not forgotten as it was a stepping stone to the path of success that you are on now. For those who started new jobs, there is no more writing endless applications and revising resumes, but now that you have that job, you will do your best to ensure that you keep it and continue to excel. 2011 is gone but the lessons learned will not be forgotten. We will use them to become stronger, wiser and to understand ourselves and others a bit more in 2012. Goodbye 2011‌you are gone, but will never be forgotten. ‘The Finder’ For A January Debut Hart Hanson had a challenging time finding the actor to play the lead in The Finder — premiering on Thursday, Jan. 12, on Fox — but once he found his guy, it was casting love at first sight. For the guy, though, it took some convincing. “I made a big choice not to do an hour,” says Geoff Stults, in a break from filming a hurricane scene in the 10th episode of The Finder, on the 20th Century Fox lot in West Los Angeles. “I said, ‘Don’t even send them my way.’ ” Stults had finally bought a house and didn’t want to be sent off to Vancouver or Toronto or Austin, Texas, or any of the other places hour dramas are shot these days, just to wind up having to come back to Los Angeles when it was over. And that included Miami, where The Finder — set in Key West — was intended to be filmed (the show did do some shooting in Miami but primarily films at Fox). However, the casting people persisted, so Stults read the script, liked it and finally agreed to sit down with Hanson, a witty Canadian who describes himself in his Twitter bio as “slightly cranky.” “I went into the meeting,” says Stults. “I hadn’t shaved since before Christmas. I had a full beard. I was wearing a hat. I looked like a bum. I walked in the door and sat down and started talking to him. Not even two minutes, and I said to myself, ‘Dammit! Two minutes!’ “So I wanted them not to want me to make this decision easy. Hart made the decision that I was Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
his guy.” Stults plays Walter Sherman, an Iraq War veteran who made his name tracking down insurgents, deserters and improvised explosive devices. Unfortunately, one IED found him first, leaving him with brain damage that Walter believes has almost supernaturally enhanced his ability to find just about anything. And just because The Finder has a light tone, that doesn’t mean the show or Stults take Walter’s condition lightly. “My best friend,” Stults says, “is in his third tour right now — two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He is suffering from PTSD as well, and it’s a real conversation that we have. It’s something that I take seriously because of that. “One of the things I found interesting in our little world of Walter is he believes it’s his injury that allows him to find things. Whether that’s true or not, it’s true to Walter, so that’s what’s important. Those who love him constantly try to get him to seek help. He refuses to do it, because he thinks that if he does, he’ll lose his gift.” In Walter’s inner circle are Leo Knox (Michael Clarke Duncan), his brother in arms, legal adviser and the owner of his favorite bar, and teenage probationer Willa Monday (Maddie Hasson), a particular project of Leo’s. “I’m a father figure to her,” says Duncan. “I don’t want anybody messing with her. ... She’s a very impressionable young woman. I don’t want the ills of the world to affect her. I want to rehabilitate her. “She has a good soul, and I know that about her. Walter believes she’s going to crush my feelings one day. He keeps telling me that.” “I love you down deep,” says Hasson. “I’m just fighting it.” 8

Dave West Memorial Flotilla On Saturday, 7th January there is a very special event – the Dave West Memorial Flotilla. It will take place off Nanny Cay and the fleet will gather at 5pm. All boats are welcome to come along and say farewell to Dave in the time-honored mariner’s tradition and please bring flowers and candles to scatter in the water. There will be a “Captains Meeting” at the RBVIYC at 7pm on Friday, 6th December where memorial leaflets and an outline of the event will be available.

Dogs – Our Mirror Selves? For true dog lovers, losing a beloved canine companion can be compared to having an arm amputated that is invisible to the world. A vital part of your self has been sliced away and those who see you don’t notice any difference. But you do. Dogs and humans form amazing bonds, and relationships with “man’s best friend” dates back to the domestication of dogs from wolf packs. Dog balancing expert Cesar Milan (The Dog Whisperer), says that he “rehabilitates dogs and trains people.” Dogs, he says need a strong pack leader who sets the boundaries in a calm, submissive state. Unfortunately, it is more human nature to anthropomorphize our pets, endearing them with our own attributes. Often we see them as our mirror selves, so our affection for them often trumps discipline and we are amazed when our voice commands carry no weight. Like Charley Brown’s Snoopy, each dog has a personality and distinctive will all of its own. I had the honor of caring for my amazing island “coconut retriever” Chutney for 12 years. Before, I had always had pedigree dogs; Saint Bernard’s to be specific. But obviously dogs historically bred in the Swiss Alps to find victims lost under vast quantities of snow, weren’t the most practical breed to have on Tortola, although the brandy keg might come in handy.
Chutney was a survivor from birth, the only one of her litter to live. I imagined she needed lots of love, as she didn’t have those other little whelps to cuddle with. From the beginning she was a trailblazer, an Alpha female in every realm, yet she had the softest most penetrating eyes, with a gaze you self-consciously dared not hold too long. She could intuit my moods in a glance, even a slight tonal difference and respond instinctively, before I even knew what I was feeling. She was the first dog I ever saw make the BVI Beacon’s annual best shots of the year issue. She was filmed by a staff member who saw her doing her conch shell trick on the beach, an amazing feat of bringing her front paws together to form a pushing position that sent the conch shell sliding in a rapid groove all the way to the ocean, where she would pick it up and do it all over again. I lived by the beach at the time, which became her domain. One day I came home and she was full of sand and still wet from saltwater and was sporting a plastic, floral lei around her neck. Curious to how she got this, a neighbor confided that a sailboat had anchored in the bay and the cruisers played with her on the beach all day long. At the end they decided to garland her with a wreath for the great time she had given them. What a dog! She crossed the “rainbow bridge” as I have heard it called, near the end of 2011. The best words of comfort I received were from a cousin who said, “You will have other dogs but none will replace Chutney. Be thankful for the good times.” Thank you Chutney, step by step you paw-printed an indelible mark in my heart forever. 13

You Again ful PR executive has to make a trip home for her brother’s wedding. What she doesn’t realize is that her brother, Will (James Wolk) is marrying Joanna (Odette Yustman), the girl who tormented her in high school and made her life a living hell. To make matters worse, Marni’s mom Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis) recognizes the bride’s highfalutin aunt as her own high school rival. In one of those only in the movies contrivances, Joanna (Yustman) claims to not remember Marni. Thus, Marni sets out to prove that the too good to be true Joanna does remember torturing her and that she’s a phony. No matter how old you are, you never get over high school. You Again is a nonstop laugh fest, in this hysterical reunion of nice girl versus mean girl. Directed by Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain, Reefer
Madness: The Movie Musical) and written by first-timer Moe Jelline, You Again is predicated on the grim notion that you can transform yourself from the ugly duckling into the swan, but you’ll never be free of the ugly duckling whose awkward and ungainly waddle were mercilessly mocked others. Moe Jelline's screenplay in a sense combines two comedy subgenres, wedding and high school reunion movies, and the theory being that such gatherings bring out the worst in people.
