This Week’s Feature Story

MJ Blues Is In De House MJ Blues is a well-known and respected musician who performs with style and finesse. He draws you in as he moves easily around the floor with his guitar. It is almost like the instrument becomes a part of him, and with his easy manner and distinctive sound – his sets have a relaxed island vibe that has wide appeal. A regular at my local, de Loose Mongoose, every Sunday night you can guarantee a full house as people gather to hear him play. MJ has a wide repertoire of musical styles, but it’s when he plays the hit Angel by Shaggy or the Marley classic, Three Little Birds that even the most reserved amongst the crowd hit the dance floor! MJ (Marcus Drigo) was born in Dominica and from a very early age he had a passion for playing the guitar. He began his professional career in London, England where he started a band before moving to Tortola when he was 25. It was here that he really discovered the Blues. He explained, “Growing up around Reggae, Calypso, Cadence and other West Indian music, the Blues was not what people expected me to play, but the language of the Blues being played on a

guitar is a language I love to speak. Blues music set me on the right course for doing what I love to do for a living.” Sing Your Song was his first CD released in 2007, and it contains all original material with the one exception of the classic and inspiring Wonderful World by the late Louis Armstrong. MJ jams his music most nights of the week in season and loves to make the crowd happy – which is what makes him one of the most in-demand performers on the island. He’s not that hard to find, but well worth it when you do. – Jan Critchley

The Simple Things I always start the New Year reflecting on the old one and over the years I have decided that instead of making a resolution I focus on the last year,s trials and triumphs as lessons learned, a way to move forward and do better. Everyone makes resolutions and by the time the next year comes around those same resolutions are usually being repeated. Most people start out good and by March or April things start to dwindle. You go on that shopping spree and spend a little more than you budgeted for, or you fall off your diet. Then during the months leading up to summer everyone kind of jumps on the wagon again. You work hard again to fit into that little polka dot bikini. Then Christmas rolls around and you give yourself that free pass to indulge in the turkey, Christmas ham and all the other festive treats. Before you know it the year is over and a new one is fast approaching. For those fortunate enough to make it to the New Year again, more resolutions and promises are made that this year will be different. I say stop making resolutions and set a goal on something realistic and strive to accomplish that goal and every year build on it. My goals this year are quite

simple – spend more time with my family and friends. Go to the beach more, travel and enjoy life. It sounds easier than it is. We often put other things ahead of our goals. Forget the things that are most important until we face a tragedy or things don’t go according to plan. In the past year I have celebrated some great times with my friends and family, memories that will last forever. I have lost loved ones and even though they are gone I will always remember the moments shared. So enjoy life this year, relish in the simple things and don’t be afraid to be spontaneous, adventurous and open-minded. Set your goal and stick with it. Have some fun; spend time with the people you love and care about and next year set a new goal!

I Want To Stop Cheating

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, One of my resolutions for this year is to stop cheating on my wife. We have been together for about 9 years, but I still find myself going with other women from time to time. Since a friend of mine’s wife recently walked out on him, I realize it is time for me to change my ways. How do I do that? –Wanderer

Stay away from people, places and things that tempt you. Say hi to flirtatious women and keep moving, limit your alcohol use as alcohol can lower your inhibitions and stay away from websites with pornography. Let the other women know that you are no longer interested in having an intimate relationship with them. If you hang out with guys who encourage you to trouble other women, cut them lose. Start dating your wife all over again. Get dressed up and go out sometimes, dance together or do other fun things. She might be cold because of your past indiscretions so be patient when chipping away at the ice around her heart. Develop an attitude of openness so that you have conversations in front of your wife and even allow her to answer your phone sometimes. She will appreciate knowing that you no longer have anything to hide. You could also speak with a counsellor to get some help for the two of you to rebuild your marriage. It is a small price to pay to put you back on the road to happiness.

Dear Wanderer, That is an excellent resolution for 2012 and beyond. Cheating has the potential to cause you and your wife great emotional pain and suffering, expose you to STD’s, destroy the trust in your relationship, cause you to lose the respect of your children and friends and is not good for the other women. Why do you cheat? For reassurance that you are still attractive and virile? Did you get married really young before you had the opportunity to enjoy life? Do you feel some sense of excitement or thrill at living dangerously? Or do you just love women? It is important that you understand what need your behaviour is filling. You must make a solid commitment to be honest with your spouse and to be loyal to the marriage. Write a statement that outlines your goals and emphasize that this is who you are and what you want. If she wants to, you can even renew your vows in a formal or informal ceremony.

‘Southland’ Changes Partners In Fourth Season Fans who tuned in last week to the fourth-season premiere of TNT’s Tuesday LAPD police drama Southland may have noticed that many of the players were the same, but the pairings

“Obviously,” says McKenzie, “the John-Ben relationship has been probably the central relationship on the show. Quite frankly, you can’t be at all accurate if you’re going to keep the training officer and student thing going past probation. The probationary period was already getting really long — three years. “It’s like, I’m a slow learner, but I’m awesome at my job. It was getting a little played out. We just couldn’t keep going to that well.” McKenzie is also enjoying the different dynamic that Sherman, now a phase two probationer, has with Sammy. “It’s two guys,” he says, “just out there, busting on each other, making fun of each other, but with real love ... . It’s great.”

have been shuffled a bit. Former rookie cop Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie) finally moved on from his training officer, John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz), and was teamed with former detective Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy), who’s now back in uniform. Cooper, having recovered from back surgery, has a new partner, Officer Jessica Tang (Lucy Liu). And Detective Lydia Adams (Regina King), who has had a string of partners, hopes she’s finally found a keeper in her latest sidekick, Detective Ruben Robinson (Dorian Missick), a former Marine and veteran of the war in Afghanistan. On this Tuesday in mid-November, the cast is spending a rare day on the show’s standing sets in downtown Los Angeles, at the same former office building that’s been home to CBS’ NUMB3RS and AMC’s Mad Men. As to whether he’s sad that executive producers Christopher Chulack and John Wells broke up one of TV’s top “bromances” when they separated Cooper and Sherman, Cudlitz says, “It’s good. It’s the way of things. It had to happen. He had to try his wings and do his own thing. It’s actually a cool transition for the show. All these relationships and these people that we think we know are doing different things in their lives and their careers, so it’s almost like a reset.” Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

War Horse For animal lovers, good news – this is a Spielberg film about a horse from a horse’s perspective. The bad news – there are some hard scenes to watch of the cruelty perpetrated on “war horses,” a dispensable part of the work force during WW I. The film begins in Devon, England with the sale of a thoroughbred horse to a farmer, who bought the horse at a high price and on a whim. His wife is less than pleased at this expenditure and doubts the horse will be able to pull a plow to cultivate a field they desperately need to plant for income. However, their teenage son Albert (Jeremy Irvine) feels he can train the horse, which he names Joey and makes an immediate bond with him. Although the “miracle horse” performs all the required tasks, the war arrives and Albert’s father, a tenant farmer, is forced to sell Joey to a major in the army. Albert swears he will find the horse again and ties to his bridle his father’s pendant from the Boer War in South Africa, as a good luck talisman. From here we join a sweeping epic of amazing cinematography underscored by John Williams’ thunderous orchestral pieces, as Joey becomes the pawn of the war machine surviving incredible odds, ending up with the Germans pulling their heavy gun wagons, which almost cripples him. This is really not an actor’s film, as the best role is reserved for Joey and another black stallion he befriends. The horse trainers preparing for this film get full kudos for how well the horses perform on cue. We bond with the horses, but strangely enough, not with the actors in the film. Maybe this is Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

what Spielberg wanted. Even debut actor Jeremy Irvine as Albert, seems contrived with emotional shallowness. As with most Spielberg films, a devastating experience can also be redeemed with a silver lining. In War Horse this is also true as Joey returns after the fighting ends with the same war pendant.

The Triple Crown’s In Town After years and years of talking, history will be made Sunday when the first leg of the Virgin Islands Triple Crown kicks off at the Ellis Thomas Down, with a $10,000 One Mile feature race, involving horses from St. Thomas, St. Croix and the BVI. Although he will not preside over the event, the impetus for this development began last January when Derrick “Aruba” Marshall was elected BVI Horse Racing Association president. “This is something that I wanted to see happen, because for years, everyone has been talking about the Triple Crown,” Marshall said as he presided over his last event, the Boxing Day races. “When I got elected in January, I can remember it was a Thursday night, and the following week Sunday, St. Thomas had races. The night I got elected, I found out who was on the association in St. Thomas and called them, explained I was the new president and that I wanted to see the Triple Crown, which had been discussed several times and that it was something I wanted to push,” he recalled. “I asked them to plan a meeting the day before their race, letting me know the place and time and I would deal with St. Croix. After hanging up, I called and spoke to Mr. Dennis Brown of Trasco on St. Croix, and explained what I would like to see and told him of the plans for a meeting in St. Thomas. He later called back and from there, it was great cooperation between all three islands.” Marshall described the inaugural meeting as being “easy” which was a surprise as he thought there would have been lots of arguments. “Everybody wanted to see great races in the Virgin Islands,” he recalled. “I told them it’s not about the USVI or the

Feature Race at Ellis Thomas Downs

BVI, it’s about the Virgin Islands and making horse racing great where all of us can make money.” Post time for Sunday’s race is 1:00 p.m. “Basically, we’re looking for a good crowd turnout because we will have seven exciting races and its going to be a great day at the Ellis Thomas Downs,” Public Relations Officer Dwight Cline, a former racing secretary said. Some 17 horses—10 from St. Thomas—are expected for the event. Cline said races to watch include the fourth which is over one mile, with a $4500 purse, featuring Nat’s My Kiss, Tigers Mischief, Glorious Memory and St. Croix’s Who Shot the Sheriff. The fifth race over six furlongs for mares and fillies, he said is another good one and includes St. Thomas’ Aircraft Intercept, Really Up Town and Broken Home, competing for $5000. “The big race of the day—race six which is the first leg of the Triple Crown over one mile for a guaranteed $10,000 purse—East End Tap and Good Prospecting from Tortola; Diablo’s Fire and Voice of Faith from St. Thomas and St. Croix’s Selvin and Political Reporter,” Cline said. “We hope that in the future, we can get more horses participating in these legs, because with these horses, you’ll get a good crowd.” 17
