Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Clingy Girlfriend Threatening Suicide that is done to her. Explain to her that while she is a nice person (if she is), you do not want to be in the relationship anymore because you are unhappy in it. Let her know that if you stay in the relationship and you are miserable, that will result in resentment, bitterness, arguments, fighting and you will both be unhappy and might even come to hate each other. You would be better off being able to relate to each other as friends in a more pleasant manner. Encourage her to make new friends so that she is not dependant on you. There is a whole world out there in which she can have a social life and find other things that interests her. Consider enlisting her sister’s help so that you talk to her together. Her sister might want to arrange for her to get counseling or get a psychiatric evaluation to ensure that she is mentally stable as that will affect her going forward. As for you, when you make the break maintain the right boundaries and do not lead her on. This will help her to move on with her life.
Dear Koren, I have been dating a young lady for about 10 months and find she is very clingy. She is from overseas and lives with her older sister and they don’t seem to know too many people here. I am trying to end the relationship but the first time I tried to leave she drank a lot of pills and I agreed to stay with her. How do I leave without her doing something stupid? – Fed Up Dear Fed Up, This is definitely a serious problem and one in which you should address with great caution. This young lady seems to be quite vulnerable as she does not have a large support system; it seems that she is expecting you as her boyfriend to fill her needs for emotional satisfaction and social camaraderie. Also, do you know if she has any history of suicide attempts or mental illness in her background? You should not be forced into staying in a relationship with someone because of circumstances. You have the right to walk away if you are not happy. However, because of her seemingly delicate state, you must be very gentle with her and help her to be a part of the decision making process so this is not seen as something

Looking on the Bright Side Traveling is not what it used to be. I remember when I would routinely call an airline to change my reservations at the last minute without penalty. But no more. Like travel agents and “chicken or pasta” meals, flexibility is no longer an option. Then there’s the harassment of airport security: the taking off of belts and shoes, the 3ounce bottles of shampoo and hand cream, and the zapping with radiation as we go through screening machines. And, last but not least, there’s the crowded planes with ever-decreasing seat space. So what else can go wrong? On a recent trip from St. Thomas to Fort Lauderdale, I boarded the 40-minute late Spirit flight to find out how one can become completely crazed by airline travel. The plane not only left late, it didn’t leave at all. We had boarded the plane, crammed ourselves into our seats and waited for the plane to taxi down the runway. Our first hint that something was wrong was when we heard the sound of an engine turning over – again and again and again. You know, a bit like when your car won’t start in the morning. Sure enough, a flight attendant announced that the plane was having mechanical difficulties and we would be returning to the gate. We deplaned and sat in the waiting room for further instructions, knowing deep down that this is St. Thomas, its 7 pm, and this plane was going nowhere that night. There was a lot of murmuring as passengers with connections realized that getting

home that evening, or even the following one, was a thing of the past. Eventually, we were put up in a hotel – a hotel, as it turned out, with a view of Tortola – a vivid reminder that after an entire day of traveling we had only gone 12 miles. The next day we were back at the airport, now partners in adversity with 150 other travelers. Everyone was taking a very bad situation in remarkably good humor. It seems that when you travel today, the bright side always shines out and everyone was grateful that the mechanical problem manifested itself before we left the ground. When we boarded the plane close to 24 hours after our original scheduled departure, we were introduced to the three mechanics sitting at the back of the plane. They had been jetted down the night before and had worked throughout the night to repair the plane. There was a communal sigh of relief. If the mechanics had faith in the plane, we would too.

The Debt Considered a spy thriller and based on an Israeli film of the same name, this dark yet provocative film is a fictionalized composite of some true-life events that occurred after the Nazi regime of WWII. The film starts out in 1997 with Rachel Singer (Helen Mirren), who bears the scar on her face of a mysterious and shady past as a Mossad agent responsible for the death of Dieter Vogel, the villainous surgeon of Birkenau (clearly based on Dr. Joseph Mengele the “Angel of Death”). Her daughter, a journalist has just published a book about her mother’s involvement in this heroic Israeli Intelligence raid some thirty years earlier. Next we flash back to Rachel’s life in 1965, when along with two other Mossad agents she enters East Berlin on assignment to kidnap the surgeon, who is now operating under another name and bring him back to Israel to stand trial. (In fact another Nazi war criminal Adolph Eichmann was brought to justice this way). The young Rachel (played by Jessica Chastain) is undercover as young German wife seeking medical help for infertility. Her “husband” and a third Mossad agent set up an elaborate plot to heist the doctor from the clinic and get him clandestinely on a train out of Germany. The tension is thick as Rachel’s visits to the doctor began to raise some suspicion. Able to abduct the doctor, but botching the attempt to get him on the train they hold him hostage in Berlin, scheming an alternative plan. From here the lies and deception intertwine with ‘”truth.” Although the viewer sees Rachel after being attacked by the surgeon, valiantly shooting him in his effort to escape, we sense this is not the real story, but it is the one the agents return with.
Cast & Credits Rachel --------------------------------Helen Mirren Stephan ----------------------------Tom Wilkinson David -------------------------------- Ciaran Hinds Young Rachel ----------------------Jessica Chastain Sarah -------------------------------Romi Aboulafia Now thirty years later intelligence gets out that a doctor in a retirement home in the Ukraine claims to be the “surgeon of Birkenau.” Rachel knows that if the truth gets out her daughter will be devastated and this will bring great embarrassment on the Mossad. She determines she is the one to pay “the debt, as she has taken credit for the lie and heads out to make retribution for the past The plot here thickens with the intensity that only the gifted actress like Mirren could bring to a role this complex. Does “truth “ that supports a greater good ever trump being based on a lie? You’ll have to see the film for yourself to decide. 9

NBC throws ‘Voice’ behind Super Bowl XLVI a Grammy Award for best pop duo/group performance. Levine deems the slotting of The Voice immediately after the Super Bowl “very flattering,” and he’s also looking forward to the halftime show that will star music icon Madonna. “She’s unbelievable,” he says. “There’s really nothing more to say about her, because it’s all been said. I don’t know her, but she definitely deserves this. This has been a long time coming, I think. When you look back, almost everyone that should have done it has done it. She’s one of the people where you think, ‘Wow, why hasn’t she?’ so I’m really happy that it’s her this year. I’m very curious and excited to see it.”
The Voice and the Super Bowl may seem mutually exclusive, but NBC is doing everything possible to have that not be the case. It’s that network’s year for the NFL championship game, and the coveted post-game slot goes to the singing competition’s second-season premiere Sunday, Feb. 5. Reminders will be built in as the AFC and NFC champs vie in Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. Voice judge Blake Shelton and his wife, fellow country music star Miranda Lambert, will perform America the Beautiful before the game, and first American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson, who will be a guest mentor on The Voice (as will Lambert), will render the national anthem. “It’s exciting, because it’s just such a rare opportunity,” says Voice host Carson Daly of the scheduling. “NBC only gets the Super Bowl every four years, the way the rotation (among the major broadcast networks) works. We have a hit show, and we have the Super Bowl, and with the chance to get all these new people who didn’t even see Season 1 on board for Season 2, we feel very grateful.” The Voice settles into a weekly Monday slot the following night, paired with NBC’s new musical-drama series Smash. Also returning to the high-backed, rotating chairs are original judges Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine, whose group Maroon 5 featured Aguilera on the hit Moves Like Jagger ... now up for 17

A Dogfight in Softball? Well, whoever let the Dogs out, looks like they’ll end up in the BVI Softball Association Jr. Girls Division league. “From what I’ve seen, I can see that on all the teams there have been improvement,” declared BVI Softball Association Jr. League Coordinator Juerine George after the opening game of the league on Saturday, which featured the Jr. Girls team. “In addition to improving, I can see it’s going to be a major Dogfight.” Now that’s the kind of action I like so I’m going be there early with my camera to catch the moment! The Jr. Girls teams in particular are the Mets, Diamondbacks, Rays and defending champions Padres. An open game between the Mets and Diamondbacks, was, well, a 2-run victory Dogfight. The Mets exploded for an eight runs fifth inning to erase a five run deficit, then held on to defeat the Diamondbacks, 15-13. Although the Diamondbacks did not have a hit, their offense benefited from 10 walks by Mets pitchers and five errors by the Mets defense. The Jays and defending champions Padres game was called off due to rain at the top of the second inning with the Jays clinging to a 6-5 lead. George said the youths are very excited about the league. “Particularly since we have a slate of tournaments coming up between now and 2014,” she noted. “They pretty much have a lot to be excited about in terms of traveling and representing the BVI, as well as staying at home for tournaments.” The league has also attracted two Boy’s teams in each of the Jr. and Sr. Divisions. Part of the challenge officials note, is that many of those who have come through the league over the last three years have moved up to the
Jr. Girls Softball players with Sports MInister Hon. Myron Walwyn, Hon. Mark Vanterpool and Softball officials
Men’s Fast Pitch League, which is scheduled to open on March 24. Among the girls, George said it’s a matter of choice if they decide to move up to the Women’s league early as there’s no restriction. She said that younger players 1213, who might be smaller in stature don’t gravitate towards the senior women’s division. “It’s a matter of choice when they feel they are ready to be part of one of the teams,” she explained. There are numerous opportunities regionally for Softball players to be exposed to competition and later this year, a tournament is being planned for the territory—a great start and something that should happen in all our sports—bringing people in to compete can only make us better. So while they are gearing up for their Dogfight, the question can also be asked, when are we going to see a Dogfight in Basketball among female teams? 19
