This Week’s Feature Story

2012 BVI Triathlon Season off with a Bang It’s time to put those New Year’s Resolutions to the test as the BVI Triathlon season gets underway this weekend. The first event, the TSC Corporate Challenge, is set to take place this Saturday, 11th February. Following its introduction last year, the Corporate Cup returns and teams must be comprised of three employees from the same company. This fun fundraiser for the Tortola Sports Club (TSC) will include a 750m swim, 20k bike ride and 5k run. The swim starts at the beach at Baughers Bay at 7am, followed by the bike ride and ending with the run. Registration for the event will be from 6pm on Friday evening at the TSC. In addition to the Corporate Cup, there will also be an Open Team category (two to three people) as well as Men and Women’s individual categories. Last year Deloitte ran away with the Corporate Cup while Horizon Yacht Charters won the Open Team category. BVI Triathlon Federation Chairman, Antony Spencer said, “We started the Triathlon season eight years ago and at that time there were four events. We now have six lined up for this year and although some of the events

are more competitive than others, everyone is encouraged to take part. The main aim is for people to come together and have fun.” More events are promised through the season with the BVI X-Tri on March 10, the National Sprint Championships on April 28, the Anegada X-Treasure Tri on October 21, the not to be missed BVI Steelman on November 10 and finally the festive themed Santathon on December 8. So try something different and join in this fun fundraiser this weekend – as Nike likes to say, “Just Do It!” You can get further information from www.tribvi.vg or e-mailing info@tribvi.vg. — Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

True Love: Should you search for it or will it find you? Why do some people seem to hit it off with one person and have a long happy relationship, while others flit from one heady relationship to the next always declaring themselves in love? Do we have a soul mate out there that is destined to be ‘the one’ for us or do we make it work with just about anyone once there is some compatibility or mutual attraction? What better time for us to look at this issue than now in the Valentine season. Men and women are complex creatures – sometimes predictable, but also unique as no two human beings are alike. For this reason, no matter how many books we read on relationships, how many discussions we have, how many talk shows we watch or articles we write, while they help us better understand what has been studied and documented by the experts, nothing helps us to know someone more than spending time with them, talking and learning about them up close and personal. I am of the opinion that true love is not a magical destiny where there is only one other person out in the universe that is a perfect match; how would you know when you met that person? Would there be a burst of fireworks in your chest? A clap of lightening in your head? Or a pounding drum in your heart? While attraction might entail just one big instant kaboom, true love requires that both parties have knowl-

edge of the other – the good, the bad and the ugly. It is not a blind acceptance since one helps their partner to become better persons. The honesty must be there as well as the communication and the compatibility. If there are no common interests between the couple, one will undoubtedly drift off to find others who share the same or at least similar interests or passions. For love to endure, both parties must make it work. It takes time, effort, sacrifice, compromise and a good sense of humour. We work hard at our studies, our jobs, maintaining beautiful homes, etc. why then do we put little effort into relationships and expect a magical happy ending? Almost impossible. True love is not elusive, except for the very lazy. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com and a response will be provided

One Person’s Trash is Another’s Treasure? Most of us know someone who is always making lucky finds, they are usually the same people that hear of that great apartment at a bargain price and by the next week are sitting comfortably on their new balcony, relaxing in their decorative and attractive wicker chairs. Now I mention wicker chairs for a reason, as I have a friend who seems to find them and other discarded pieces of furniture on a very regular basis. When visiting her home, I will often comment on a piece of furniture or some other piece that seems to be new to her home. Most often, she will reply, “Oh that, I just saw it by the side of road and thought I could do something with it.” And do something with it, she does. Miraculous is what I call it, as I have trouble choosing furniture and household items and that is when I am in a department store! She is also a connoisseur of the large green rubbish skips and it has been known for her to ask if we can slow down as she has clearly spotted something worthy of further investigation! Now the clue can be anything from a spindly wicker chair leg poking out of the top of the bin to the corner of an old (but wooden) chest of drawers. Before you can say, “I don’t want that smelly old thing in my car,” she is out and heaving the new treasure out of the skip and, yes, into the car. She does remarkable things with these items that others have, for whatever reason, decided to part with –

and it’s a loving process. Wicker chairs will be re-woven and cleaned or painted in a bright color. A cute contrasting cushion tops off the look perfectly and the chair is now a beautiful addition to a bedroom. The chest of drawers are sanded back and dependent upon the wood, either painted or varnished and the finished product always looks amazing. I guess in these days of recycling as much as we possibly can, her hobby is the ultimate in being green. I encourage her to sell her wares, mainly as I feel a bit sorry for her husband who literally has to move things out of the house to make room for her new finds. You do often hear her husband say, “Don’t we already have enough wicker chairs, and surely we don’t need any more.” Usually he’s saying this as she is hauling yet another find from the back of the car. Too late now, it’s already part of the furniture you might say!

I Don’t Know How She Does It poised assistant (Olivia Munn) is particularly amusing as Momo, a clever young go-getter with plenty of sarcasm. Kate’s new boss (Pierce Brosnan) also entertains with his charming good looks and subtle sense of humor. Aline Brosh Mckenna 27 Dresses and The Devil Wears Prada constructs a witty, but wholesome storyline that fits Parker perfectly. While Parker’s role as Kate may seem slightly reminiscent of Carrie Bradshaw Sex in the City, her relaxed, but ambitious attitude make the film a joy to watch. Sarah Jessica Parker plays Kate Reddy a careerminded mom who appears at first glance to have it all together. She’s your typical workaholic, jet-setting across the country and returning home to craft masterpieces for her kid’s bake sale. She thinks she has life under control, but her husband and two kids feel a little neglected. The kids are quickly becoming attached to the nanny, and Kate’s husband (Greg Kinnear) could use a bit more attention. Kate’s in a constant battle between work and family, and she just can’t manage it all. I Don’t Know How She Does It is remarkably relatable. The tale plays upon the hectic modern-day lifestyle with ease. Douglas McGrath takes the directorial reins and produces a creative set of characters. Kate holds a prestigious position at a Boston investing company, but she’s always a bit frazzled. Yet somehow she manages to snag a huge promotion, while combating a serious infestation of head lice. Her perfectly 9

Stevie down for another season of sucking up in ‘Eastbound’ of Will Ferrell, reprising his role as a maniacal car dealer, and Jason Sudeikis as one of Kenny’s new minor-league teammates. Kenny must deal with the fallout of the news that his longtime love, April (Katy Mixon), is pregnant with his child, while Stevie has to find room in his newly married life with his Spanish-speaking wife, Maria (Lisa De Razzo), to continue kowtowing to Kenny. “Stevie Janowski is Kenny Powers’ Sancho Panza,” McBride says. “Powers’ quest couldn’t be complete without him. Steve Little is just as essential to the show. His performance is my favorite part of the series. He breaks my heart and keeps me laughing the whole time.”

Kenny Powers has inspired a devoted cult following of real-world fans — Google “Kenny Powers tattoos” at your own risk — but there are still none who can compare to the character’s sidekick on Eastbound & Down, the ever-loyal Stevie Janowski. Steve Little embodies the lovable sycophant so believably that many people approach him as though they are talking not to an accomplished comedic actor but to the sweet simpleton who thinks nothing of rearranging his life to follow his washed-up ex-ballplayer idol even while absorbing inhuman amounts of abuse from him. “They do confuse me with the character,” Little says, adding that it hasn’t bothered him so far. “I think people feel like they know you, and they also feel endeared to you. The fact that the name is so close to mine is actually kind of a nice thing, because if you were Norm from Cheers, that would be kind of tough (being) George Wendt and everyone’s calling you Norm.” Little received directions from on high — i.e., a text from series star Danny McBride — not to reveal any secrets from Season 3, which originally was envisioned as the show’s swan song (but won’t be if HBO can convince McBride and company otherwise). He did say the season — which kicks off Sunday, Feb. 19 — will be “pretty crazy, and emotional, too,” while also confirming that most of the action will be set in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Viewers can also expect to see guest spots from the likes 17
