Limelight Productions Presents
Aladdin Friday, Saturday & Sunday
ALSO THIS WEEK: Sweethearts Race • Champagne Showers @ Bat Cave • 2nd Annual Graffiti Party @ Capt. Mulligan’s
This Week’s Feature Story
Aladdin – He’s Behind You! Don’t miss this favorite family classic and Limelight’s latest production – Aladdin, which has been a popular pantomime for over 200 years. The performances start this weekend at the Eileen Parsons Auditorium, HLSCC on Friday, 17th February 2012 at 7pm, with additional performances at 7pm on Saturday, a matinee performance at 2:20pm on Sunday and a final show at 7pm on Sunday evening. The story is all about magic and power, and of course, good overcoming evil. Wicked wizard Abanazer is looking for the magic lamp that can conjure up the all-powerful Genie so that he can have any wish he desires and therefore rule the world! And, he is well on his way to succeeding until Aladdin’s impoverished yet resourceful family intervene to save the day and foil the wizard’s evil scheme. Aladdin is helped by his brother – the cheeky Wishy Washee and their fearsome mother, Widow Twankey. Aladdin is a Middle-Eastern folk tale, and is one of the most famous tales from the Arabian Nights, so throw in a magic carpet, a mystical Spirit of the Ring, the Emperor of China, a beautiful princess and you have all the ingredients for a fantastic pantomine and
great entertainment. As is traditional with pantomine, the show is packed with songs, comedy and of course lots of audience participation. “The rehearsals have been dynamic,” producer Paul Cowlard said, “and it has been amazing to watch the characters develop as the actors grow into their roles.” Limelight Productions have been producing quality shows in the BVI since 2008. Featuring local actors, the group has always put on performances that appeal to a wide audience. Previous shows have included Cinderella, Wizard of Oz and Pride and Prejudice. Tickets are available at HLSCC, Road Town Bakery, Alamanda Gallery and Infinite solutions. So treat the family this weekend and don’t forget to join in and let the cast know, “He’s Behind You!” – Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Dissatisfied with Husband’s Discipline Style
Your personal E-therapist is in the house!
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, My husband is a very stubborn man and doesn’t like being corrected. We have 2 children together, a boy 8 and a girl 5. I tell him that he should discipline the boy and allow me to handle the girl because I think he is too rough with her. He does not agree and is always hitting the girl when she does things. He deals with the boy too, but I find his approach is more suitable for the boy. Please advise how we should solve this problem. –Mom
style and also destroying your marriage in the process. I do understand that sometimes your husband’s approach might be a bit rough, but he can learn to be less rough and more sensitive to both children. Your son is not immune to roughness, he deserves consideration also. Parenting can be stressful and sometimes you will feel like you are losing your mind, but it is one of the most wonderful experiences also. Some helpful tips are: • Same rules apply for both children. • Discuss with them what is allowed. • Let them know beforehand what the punishment for their bad behavior is likely to be. •Reward good behaviour. Your kids are pretty young, but old enough to know right from wrong. However, you still need to be realistic and not expect them to be perfect. Your job as parents is a team effort, so work together to have a home filled with love and to raise your children in a way that they will become good citizens and valuable members of society.
Dear Mom, The short answer is that both parents should discipline both children but they should discuss the methods of discipline that is suitable and agreed upon by both parties. Having your husband discipline the boy and you the girl sends the message that boys and girls should be treated differently. If your plan were to become the norm, soon you will have a situation where he is saying, “your daughter broke the bottle” and you will be referring to your son as your husband’s. Whoever is responsible for disciplining the particular child will somehow be responsible totally for their upbringing and the kids will develop a sense of competition that is unhealthy and destructive and will pit you and your husband against each other. This has the far reaching consequences of wreaking havoc with your parenting

A Green…ish Thumb For most of my life I’ve always been quite close to nature and to gardening in particular. Growing up in the countryside, I remember my grandmother having lots of fruit trees in the yard and even when we moved to the city, my dad cultivated a kitchen garden in the backyard. I was a constant fixture in both of those. My mom continued this trend after dad’s passing although mainly in the form of a flower garden in the front yard, with a few herbs and vegetables sprinkled in between. However, having been constantly away from my native home for the past 20 years, I lost touch with this timeless craft and how arduous but yet therapeutic it could be. This was, until moving to our new home that had a bit of yard space and deciding to spruce it up with a few plants. My wife and I began by purchasing some bougainvilleas but decided, in the interest of saving a few pennies and adding a bit more excitement to the process, to propagate our own from cuttings. A few YouTube videos later, a box of Miracle Gro plant food and a bottle of rooting powder at hand, we were ready to go, confident that we had it all down pat. Constant daily checks ensued for the next couple of weeks as we eagerly anticipated the first signs of positive growth. Disappointment prevailed at first as we watched green leaves, and eventually stems, slowly turn to

brown. Still we remained optimistic, hoping to see the first new shoots from the few remaining green plants. Finally after about two and a half weeks we noticed the first signs. From about twenty cuttings, five had remained green and a few little leaves started to emerge. Enthusiasm, then optimism had now become excitement as the realization that we had just propagated our first plants hit us. We couldn’t wait to get them in the ground and begin our new flower garden. Weeks of hard work and perspiration have passed since that day, and with the addition of a few more plants – some bought, some grown from seeds and a few more propagated, our garden seems to be well on its way. It’s still a very long way from what we imagine it to be, but with our green …ish thumbs getting greener by the day I hope that dream isn’t too far away.

PBS takes an unflinching look at Bill Clinton Even if you have a strong recollection of the Clinton years, seeing his life and presidency laid out in an unblinking, four-hour documentary puts him into perspective. Clinton: PBS’ American Experience, which airs in two parts Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 20 and 21 (check local listings), does an excellent job of chronicling the first president to be impeached since Andrew Johnson in 1868. It opens on Dec. 11, 1998, with a somber Clinton in the Rose Garden. “I am profoundly sorry for all I have done, in my words and deeds,” he says. “Quite simply, I gave into my shame.” If there is any fault with this documentary it is how much time — roughly a quarter — is devoted to the Monica Lewinsky scandal. “There’s a lot of time devoted, but it’s more how much time the press was devoting to it,” says longtime Clinton friend Harry Thomason, a TV and film producer who made The Man From Hope, which was shown at the 1992 Democratic National Convention. Among those is Robert Reich, Clinton’s secretary of labor. Reflecting on whether the economy could have continued to boom as it did then, Reich, now a professor of public policy at University of CaliforniaBerkeley, says, “Alan Greenspan cooperated by lowerLimin’ Times Entertainment Guide
ing interest rates, and that combined with a solid recovery, which enabled the economy to do exceptionally well, with 22 million, net, new jobs created over those eight years.” The film also focuses on Clinton’s personal life and examines his marriage. Hillary Clinton, now the secretary of state, knew about her husband’s infidelities early on, and this makes clear that whatever marital strife they endured since their October 1975 wedding, there is a deep love between them. She recognized immediately how advantageous it could be for her husband to go on TV after his endless speech at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. It was Thomason, at the urging of wife Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, who called Johnny Carson’s producer, Fred de Cordova, and asked him to let Clinton go on the The Tonight Show. Carson had a policy of not inviting politicians as guests. Thomason did not want to face his wife with the rejection so he called back de Cordova and suggested Clinton go on as a musician. Clinton played the sax, then became the first politician on a late-night show. The timing for a full look at Clinton was right, says series producer Mark Samels. “Typically in the past, the rule of thumb was a generation needed to pass before you could really enter into the realm of history,” he says. “And we’re sort of in an accelerated period now.” One of the take-aways from this is that Clinton “is often depicted almost solely cynically,” says filmmaker Barak Goodman. “I would say both Clintons are fundamentally driven by idealism.” 8

The Ides of March The Ides of March surprised me. Ostensibly about an American presidential campaign, the film at first seemed too reminiscent of the sound bites that we hear on the news every day – a bit long on speeches, and a bit short on plot and action. But then again this is a movie starring George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, and I should have known that with star power like that, the unexpected might happen. George Clooney plays Governor Mike Morris, a polished politician who is contending for the Democratic presidential nomination. Ryan Gosling plays his press secretary, Stephen Meyers, a young hot shot, considered by many on the campaign trail to be “very smart.” It is also obvious that he is very ambitious. The Morris campaign team is in Ohio, where a presidential primary is just days away, and it is believed that whoever wins Ohio is a shoe-in for the nomination. Both campaign teams, Morris’ and that of his rival’s, will pull any trick in the book to get an edge on the nomination. In the midst of the horse trading, Stephen is carrying on an affair with Molly (Evan Rachel Wood), who is a young intern in his office and the daughter of a prominent politician. It could be an affair of convenience – two attractive people, looking for diversion. But it also seems that, as with Stephen’s relationship with campaign manager Paul Zara (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), there may be something more calculating at work. Other questions arise: does Stephen have ulterior motives when he meets with the opponent’s campaign manager and how ethical are his dealings with the aggressive New York Times reporter, Ida Horowilcz (Marisa Tomei)? Eventually Molly admits to an indiscretion that Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
Cast & Credits Stephen Meyers-----------------------Ryan Gosling Gov. Mike Morris--------------------George Clooney Evan Rachel Wood--------------------Molly Stearns Philip Seymour Hoffman------------------Paul Zara Marisa Tomei---------------------------Ida Horowicz could have a direct and disastrous impact on the campaign and perhaps Stephen’s career. How Stephen deals with the “problem” has profound consequences and says a lot about modern day politics. The politicians here are Democrats, but the themes are cynical and global. I fear that self-serving politicians are a universal breed in today’s political world. The movie is a tailor-made vehicle for George Clooney who directed and co-wrote the film. He plays slick very well. It is up to the audience to determine whether he, or any of the other characters are sincere. 14
