Corky Chamber Blues Saturday at HLSCC ALSO THIS WEEK: Le Grand Café Clash of the Titans • Celebrating 45 years of Policing • Free Up Friday Party @ Bat Cave
This Week’s Feature Story
Corky Chamber Blues Returns to HLSCC Don’t miss the much-anticipated return appearance of Corky Siegal’s Chamber Blues this Saturday, 25th February from 8pm at the HLSCC Auditorium. Walking the line between Beethoven and BB King, these performers have been described by critics as astonishing, extraordinary, hot, mesmerising, joyous and outrageous fun! This inventive blues-classical group is celebrating their 25th anniversary, and has recently released a new CD, Corky Seigel’s Travelling Chamber Blues Show! Their performances are original and fresh, blending gritty Chicago blues with the sparkling qualities of classical chamber music, brought together by composer and harmonica virtuoso, Corky Siegel. Blues Revue magazine says, “Watching them perform is nearly as much fun as hearing them play.” A composer, blues pianist and singer/songwriter, Mr. Siegel has earned an international reputation as one of the world’s great blues harmonica masters. For the performance on Saturday, Corky will be accompanied by Frank Donaldson (percussion), Jocelyn Butler (cello), Aurelien Fort-Pederzoli,
Chihsuan Yang (violin) and Dave Moss (viola). Corky’s career began with a fortunate break when he formed the legendary Siegel-Schwall Band that toured the major rock venues and clubs in the 1960 and 70s, where his job included performances with the masters themselves, including Willie Dixon, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, and Howlin’ Wolf. As part of his visit to the BVI, there will also be a Student Outreach Show, entitled “Music and the Joy of Diversity with Corky Siegel,” on Friday 24 February at 10am where he will perform, share stories, divulge musical secrets and coach students from pre-invited schools. College President Dr. Karl Dawson said, “Long time HLSCC concert goers would remember Corky’s astounding mix of instruments and sounds, and we look forward to another rousing performance, an entertaining night of music, and wish him and his band an enjoyable stay in these islands.” So make sure you make the most of this unique experience, tickets are $20 each, available from the usual outlets, please call 8527223 for details. — Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Grown Son Won’t Move Out Dear Koren, Last year my 37 year old son got laid off from the hotel he worked at and we agreed to let him stay at home for a while to not have to deplete his little savings on rent. Now he got a job again in November when the hotel got busy and I notice he is not taking any steps to move out. How do I address this with him? – Mom Dear Mom, You address moving out the same way the discussion was had about him coming in. “Son, because of the situation where you have no extra income, it’s okay for you to stay here for a while.” That worked back then, so use the same strategy now. “Son due to the new situation of you regaining your job, we will need that spare room again to fix up for our guests that we are expecting in March.” Simple. The room belongs to you and your husband and while it probably once was your son’s home too, he is old enough to find his own nest and be a man. It was mighty noble of you to extend that wonderful courtesy of letting him come back temporarily, but please don’t allow that young man to become too comfortable and get too accustomed to living rent free and no doubt getting regular meals and housekeeping services in the bargain. If you ask him nicely to leave and he is silently and

stubbornly taking advantage of your love but not going anywhere, make it uncomfortable for him. Stop leaving a plate of food in the microwave, don’t do his laundry and start walking around semi naked in the house with lots of public displays of affection between you and your husband. If those don’t work, then pull out the big guns and start setting a curfew time after which you don’t expect anyone to be coming and going and see how quickly he becomes eager to go. Your home is yours and while you want to be able to help your kids out when they are in a jam, you still want to send a strong message to your son that he is quite capable of running his own life, with only just a little speck of help from Mom and Dad. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com and a response will be provided

Thinking Small things. There was a wonderful camaraderie at the fair. The farmers, who had laid out tables with home grown veggies and fruits, were proud of their achievements. “They are all organically grown,” said one woman of her mustard greens and local spinach. There isn’t much organic in the grocery store, so I filled my bag up. We also ended up with a tangerine seedling and two lavender orchids. As we moved past the different tables, we chatted to the vendors about the pleasures of cultivating one’s own produce, and got a few growing tips for our own vegetable garden. You couldn’t get pizza, burgers or nuggets, at Farmer’s Week, but you could get a heaping portion of stewed conch, peas and rice, homemade coleslaw and johnny cake. There wasn’t a Las Vegas-style magic show, or a pig Grand Prix, but there were donkey races, local music and pens of prize sheep, pigs and goats – plus some pumpkins and squash as beautiful as sculptures. When people comment that there is no agriculture in the BVI, they haven’t gone to Farmers’ Week. It may be a fraction of the size of the South Florida Fair, but that’s part of its charm.
Recently I went with family to the South Florida Agricultural Fair in West Palm Beach, and even though I had not been to a US Ag fair since my kids were small, all the nostalgia came back. Everything was there: stalls of cotton candy, amusement park rides, pens of prize winning animals – including amazingly large roosters and chickens in a dazzling array of colors and patterns. There was a display of gleaming classic cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles (which made my grandson’s eyes pop out), a dog show and pig racing (I hadn’t known that pigs could run that fast!) And then there were the food kiosks – pizza, ice cream, nuggets and donuts – all designed to appeal to impressionable youngsters (and adults), and add to the waistline. The grounds were so large that even after four or five hours we had seen only a fraction of what was on offer. My next chance to go to an Ag Fair was earlier this month on Tortola. And although I have been to the Agricultural Exhibition at Farmer’s Week many times before, I wondered if I would now find it too small and too tame. The lesson I learned, though, is that there’s pleasure in the small

Underworld Awakening The Underworld series begins by telling the story of Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire bent on destroying the lycans (werewolves who are able to shift between human and wolf form) who allegedly killed her family. She discovers that the lycans are pursuing a human, Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) for experimentation so, Selene captures Michael herself to find out what the lycans are up to. Along the way, Selene not only discovers a mutinous plot to destroy the Vampire Elders, but also a shocking revelation about her father-like Elder, Viktor. The vampires, werewolves, and lycans, are not supernatural creatures, but rather the product of a virus. Throughout, the series Underworld: Evolution and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans we see the war between the vampires and lycans develop after the lycans and vampire clans both double cross each other in their quest for peace. Like the previous installments, Underworld: Awakening hinges upon a war, but this time it’s one that supposedly ended. The humans discovered the existence of vampires and lycans, uniting the enemies briefly during their suffering. This great purge drove the survivors underground and led to Selene and Michael’s capture. She's placed in a facility and frozen to be examined, at least until she suddenly wakes up. Panicked and frantic, our heroin flees from the humans and into the night intent on reuniting with her beloved. Instead, she finds a twelve year-old girl Eve (India Eisley) and a hell of a story. Apparently, it’s been more than a decade, 12 years

Selene learns that the Lycans have been secretly replenishing their species. Dr. Jacob Lane (Stephen Rea), director of Antigen’s research team who are trying to find a cure for the virus, is actually a lycan himself, and he has been making advances to strengthen the species and not eradicate them. Detective Sebastian (Michael Ealy) who suspected fowl play by Antigen before and who has a soft heart for the vampire clan, helps Selene who will stop at nothing to protect her daughter and the one part of her beloved Michael that she has left. 9

For A Swingin’ Ride, Catch This Cab his older sister who preceded him in show business. One of the devices in the documentary is to watch an artist sketch, then paint Calloway, and ultimately that figure becomes animated. “I wanted him to feel present again,” Levin says of Calloway, who died at 86 in 1994. “I didn’t want it to be about an old, dead guy. I wanted to try and make him feel present, which is the whole reason for the animation. I wanted him to dance again. It was a conscious decision not to make the traditional biographical benchmarks, the places to stop. It is more the spirit and the essence of him, and the glamour of him and the irrepressibility of him as the focus.”
Without Cab Calloway, it is hard to imagine there would have been a Michael Jackson or a Prince or hip-hop moves. If that sounds like hyperbole, tune in to PBS’ Cab Calloway: Sketches, airing on American Masters Monday, Feb. 27 (check local listings). Calloway, for those who have not had the pleasure, was the ultimate entertainer. He was an orchestra leader, singer, dancer and actor with unparalleled flair. Calloway had that elusive X-factor; it was impossible to not watch him when he was onstage. Maybe it was the million-watt smile, for when he smiled this huge, wraparound-the-face smile, you had to smile back. It could have been that he had a sound like no other; a melding of jazz with the plaintive wailings found in Jewish liturgical music. Watching him perform is to watch someone filled with joy, and he can’t help but spread it. For those who need documentaries that explain when and where people were born and what experiences forged them into who they became, this will not satisfy. This is, as the title references, a sketch. “I have made a number of American Masters, and I tend to feel the life is the essence of the guy — not to say the dates and when they were born is not important. I talked about Baltimore and Blanche,” filmmaker Gail Levin says, referring to Calloway’s hometown and Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
