This Week’s Feature Story

The Dark and Stormy Yachtsmen will be heading for Anegada this weekend as the The Dark and Stormy, one of the highlights of the West End Yacht Club calendar, sets sail. Slated for Friday, March 9th through Monday March 12th, the event, now in its 15th year, promises a Commonwealth weekend packed with sailing fun and non-stop shoreside activities. Registration is on Friday at de Loose Mongoose between 6 and 8pm, with a barbecue special and happy hour drinks getting the regatta off to a rollicking start. Saturday, a special breakfast and skippers meeting will be held at the at de Loose Mongoose between 8am and 9am, followed by a race start off Marina Cay at 10:30am. Once on Anegada, the Anegada Reef Hotel will be serving a hearty dinner, and the music and dancing promises to go on until the early hours. On Sunday – or “Fun Day” as it has been dubbed – there will be games and activities galore, including horseshoes, dominoes, sandcastle building, kite flying, beach trips, a “bang and go back” dinghy race and even a lion fish derby. Burgers and hot dogs will be served on the

Dark & Stormy Race

beach for lunch, and a buffet or á la carte dinner will be served in the evening accompanied by more music and dancing. On Monday revelers head back to Tortola with a Pursuit Race to Nanny Cay on the roster, followed by the Goslings Awards and Prize giving ceremony, also at Nanny Cay. The party continues with more music and dancing on the beach. What better way to spend the holiday weekend than at the Dark & Stormy, which has become one of the BVI’s most anticipated yachting events. For more information call the West End Yacht Club at 496-8685 or Martin Halpern at 342-3084. – Claudia Colli

They Grow So Fast I spent most of the weekend hanging out with my one-year-old niece Kaylee who turns two next month. Whenever I’m around her I get flash backs of the Bill Cosby Show Kids Say The Darndest Things. She says pretty much everything including calling me by name and not aunty like she should. The thing is, I am fairly certain, she does it to toy with me. Every time she calls me “Lena” she starts laughing hysterically, but if she wants something she calls me aunty. At a year and a half she is the most active of all the other kids in my family. I know I should expect this but it still catches me off guard when I see her, for instance, out in the yard helping her dad work on his truck or in deep conversation with her brother. Even though her words aren’t really clear yet she gets her point across. It seems she likes mechanics as she is already displaying talents in that field. She likes to laugh and play practical jokes and I get the sense that she is and will be a bit of a daredevil. I watched as she played with her older brother K’Shaun and she mimics everything that he does. For instance, he takes karate and he sometimes practices at home. Well, Kaylee has been watching and picking up a few moves of her own. Needless to say in a few years she will be a force to be reckoned with. She is so funny because I hear her around the house going “che, che,” so I asked my sister exactly what she was saying and what

it meant. She explained that when Kaylee’s brother practices his karate he says “che” when doing his moves, and the little parrot that she is, has picked it up. In order to keep bonding we decided to go to the park. Once there she was in her element – with an open field to run, slides and swings, she was high on life. I mean she has nothing else to worry about, so why not? She even tried her hand at basketball. She ran up and down the court trying desperately to get the ball away from her brother who was trying to work on his game. By the end of our fun filled day she was starting to wind down, I mean after all she did have a long day at the office.

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

AskI Wait Koren Should or Settle Dear Koren, Some time ago you wrote an article about love not being elusive, but for me, it is! I have always had a list of things I would like to have in a boyfriend or husband, but most of the men I meet are falling short. Is it better for me to hold out and wait for what I truly want or just give to one of the guys who say they like me and settle out of desperation? –Lonely tion, it is just exploring the options. Desperation is staying long after you decide that a relationship is not for you because of some benefit you are receiving. I cannot tell you what to do, but if you have a reasonable attraction to someone who does not have 90% of the items on your list, then you can still go out with that person and see what happens. You must just realize that you can be happy with 75% and the other bit might not matter as much anyway. I really do want to applaud you though, for knowing what you want and for having standards. Too many women and men just accept anyone that comes along and end up flitting from relationship to relationship. Don’t discard your list, it is useful as a guide, but just ensure that you are flexible enough to not pass up on a good man, just because he is not a carbon copy of an image you created in your head.

Dear Lonely, When I talk about love not being elusive, I meant love generally not necessarily romantic love. We can find love in many sources if we make ourselves lovable and stay open-minded. Romantic love though, can be difficult to find and more so if you have a list of requirements. The longer the list, the more difficult it will be to find your version of an ideal man. Are you flexible about your list? Then break it down into four categories: things you absolutely must have, things you want but you are willing to do without, things you absolutely don’t want and things you don’t like but can tolerate. Then just look at the must haves and definitely don’t want lists and it automatically becomes shorter, hence making it easier for a mere mortal man to be eligible. Deciding to be with someone because they don’t have everything you want is not settling out of despera-

The Sunset Limited The film opens in a subway station with muffled sounds of people and a hazy view. Close ups on the station name give us the establishing shot – the Sunset Limited is a subway line with a prophetic name soon to be revealed. Next the camera moves to the only other set on the whole film, a rundown apartment with two men, one white (Tommy Lee Jones) and one black (Samuel L. Jackson) sitting opposite each other at a table. Although their names are not given, it is soon clear their professions, their stories, and most importantly their individual raisons d’être, becomes the central focus. Action is minimal. Thoughts are the key players here.

Syfy Shows How Chills Are Created With Season Finale And Premiere FX special effects company has serviced the Ghoulies and Troll series - and his associates, including his daughters and his ex-wife, as they devise figures for horror movies. Their boss in the first episode is Sean S. Cunningham, director of the original Friday the 13th thriller, who enlists them to “build” conjoined twins that will separate rather graphically. “I don’t know how I feel about it,” Hall admits of having his efforts spotlighted by television. “After 34 years of working in anonymity, I’m not sure what’s going to happen the first time I hear somebody yell, ‘Hey! Monster Man ’ on the street. It’s new, so we’ll see. So far, I don’t feel any different.”

These days, Syfy isn’t only a destination for watching scary movies but also for seeing how they get that way. The special effects makeup competition Face Off has been a ratings hit for the channel, to the degree that it’s already been renewed for a third round before the second season winner is named Wednesday, March 14. Immediately after that finale, Syfy debuts the unscripted series Monster Man, following a group of creature-constructing veterans as they tackle assignments for various filmmakers. “It’s a very interesting place for me,” says Face Off host McKenzie Westmore, who hails from Hollywood’s most famous family of movie makeup artists. “This season, they’ve really let me have a voice. They let me speak up, not just as somebody who’s been there and knows what’s good or bad but also from a viewer standpoint. Sometimes, what you see in person is different from what’s seen on TV, so I love that I get to have more of a say. “At the same time, I’m still the host,” she continues, “so I have to play it Ryan Seacrest-like in a way. I’ll give a little advice, but I don’t want to give too much of an opinion. I can see who’s putting their best foot forward and who isn’t; it’s talent, it’s attitude, it’s time management. There’s so much that goes into this that I’m familiar with.” Monster Man showcases Cleve Hall - whose SOTA Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
