This Week’s Feature Story

Yo Ho Ho and a Rum Tasting at The Clubhouse Rum has been the spirit of the West Indies for over 300 years. To sample some of the world’s best rums don’t miss the Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society’s rum tasting this Monday, March 19th at The Clubhouse at Frenchman’s. Held from 4-8pm, “Prof” Eddie Brockbank, holder of a phD in Rumology, will be mixing an array of drinks, including local classics like the Pain Killer; exotics, such as mojitos made with famed Club Havana Rum; and island favorites like Gosling’s Dark and Stormy. Accompanying this world of rums will be a selection of delicious hors d’oeuvres dished up by Clubhouse chef, Paul Mason. Proceeds from the event will aid the work of the Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society, a non-profit environmental organization established to preserve the culture, land, marine environment and heritage of Jost Van Dyke. In 2010, with the help of the Island Resources Foundation,

an environmental profile of Jost Van Dyke was conducted, providing a snapshot of the island’s unique flora, fauna, history and culture. This year along with the BVI Conservation Department, the group coordinated an annual bird census on the island. Other projects include the construction of a traditional island sloop in the backyard at Foxy’s and sailing lessons for four Jost Van Dyke youngsters. Why a rum tasting? JVD Preservation Society Director, Susan Zaluski, explains that rum is part of the history of the BVI. “We wanted to something a bit different, an event where people could have a fun night out, support a good cause and learn something in the process.” A $100 per person donation will get you into this very special fundraiser. For more information on the event, or to see how you can aid in the Society’s work, go to www.jvdps.org or email susan@jvdps.org – Claudia Colli

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Ask Koren Which Man Should I Choose Dear Koren, I am a single young woman with a three year old son, but I’m not in the best of health. I broke up with my son’s father when he was about a year old. I am now with a married man who is living separately from his wife, but my son’s father would like me to forgive him and reunite. I am in love with this married man, who treats me well; he always looks out for my well being and that of my son. I also want to commit my life to Christ, but the Bible says I must obey the Lord’s commandments and that who God joins together let no man put asunder. How do I decide who to choose? –So Confused

were to reunite with him. Is it unlikely that he will do whatever he did again? Can you forgive him and not keep throwing the past in his face? You broke up two years ago, yet he still wants you to get back together, that indicates that there are some strong feelings there. To make a decision, consider the pros and cons of those two guys and the relationship you would have with them. Which relationship would help you to be your best self and in which one can you truly give your all? Think about the long term benefits for you and your son – maintaining your Christian values, stability, happiness, love, your health, etc. It sounds like the married one might be more financially secure, but you need more than money to make a relationship work.

Dear Confused, If you want to live a Christian life, then you should not be with someone who is married. It is clear that you are feeling some guilt or shame about this relationship and that is not the best condition under which to have a good relationship. Don’t torture yourself that you are putting him and his wife asunder if they split up before you met – that cannot be your fault. You only affect their relationship directly if they want to reconcile and you are standing in the way. It is nice that he treats you and your son well, but if he were unmarried, he might be able to offer more. Based on the reason for the breakup with your son’s father, you need to consider what will be different if you

Sparkle daughter. It is a plot device reminiscent of that older woman seduces younger man classic, The Graduate, and as the truth comes out, there are just as many uncomfortable moments. Neither Sam nor Kate know who their true fathers are and identity becomes a key theme in this complicated story of lost and regained love. As the movie progresses, and we get to know the film’s other characters, like Vinny, Jill’s landlord and Sheila’s ex-husband, Bernie, we realize that life can be unexpectedly intertwined and that hiding the truth can have unforeseen consequences.

As proved by Sam, the young and cheeky protagonist of the engaging British romantic comedy, Sparkle, life can get complicated, especially when you are not entirely upfront about your relationships. Sam (played by Shaun Evans) is in a bit of a rut, he is jobless in a provincial English town, with a daffy but devoted mother, Jill (Lesley Manville), who sings for a living in a local restaurant. When an opportunity to move to London comes up, Sam quickly packs his bags and lands a job as a waiter with a catering firm specializing in swanky corporate functions. At one such job, he runs into Sheila (Stockard Channing), the party’s hostess and the older and well-off owner of a London PR firm. Soon he is ensconsed in both Sheila’s office and her posh London apartment. But things get tricky when Sam becomes involved with Kate (Amanda Ryan), whom he meets at another of Sheila’s parties. Juggling both relationships is not easy, but Sam does his best, keeping each woman’s identity a secret from the other. That is until he finally makes a most awkward connection – Kate is Sheila’s estranged 9

Gotta dance! ‘Stars’ take the floor as ABC contest returns Let the Dancing begin anew. Following a round that was much-discussed last fall — thanks to such contestants as Chaz Bono, Ricki Lake, Nancy Grace and the eventual winner, war veteran-turned-actor J.R. Martinez — Dancing With the Stars starts its 14th ABC season Monday, March 19. Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet return as hosts, with Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli judging again. And the new competitors? As usual, the mix includes actors (Family Matters alum Jaleel “Steve Urkel” White), singers (Gladys Knight), athletes (tennis icon Martina Navratilova), celebrities known mainly for being themselves (Extra co-host Maria Menounos) and the now-requisite Disney Channel star (Roshon Fegan of Shake It Up!). Also on board: Little House on the Prairie staple Melissa Gilbert; Melrose Place and General Hospital veteran Jack Wagner; singer Gavin DeGraw; The View cohost Sherri Shepherd; Donald Driver of the Green Bay Packers; telenovela star William Levy; and opera’s Katherine Jenkins. “I’m a private guy,” White says, “and I have no problem saying I’m old-school, adapting to a new regime of celebrity. The real reason I’m doing the show is the fans. There’s been an outcry for my participation in the show, and the second my mother found out about that, she started sending me emails en masse ... as if she needs Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

any other reason to contact me. It’s her favorite show.” White realizes Dancing will let him take steps toward being known for something other than his most famous role. “Quite frankly, in the last couple of years, going outside my comfort zone and doing things I haven’t even been trained to do have brought me the most success.” Such was the case with his participation in Cee Lo Green’s music video Cry Baby; White hopes for more success by hosting the Syfy game show Total Blackout starting April 25. For Menounos, being in the Dancing spotlight is turnabout, since she has reported on the show. “It was never fully my assignment,” she notes. “There are certain reporters whose beat was Dancing With the Stars, and I’d done it on occasion. I was there for the season finale last time for Extra, and I remember Tony (Dovolani, one of the series’ pro dancers) being like, ‘You should do the show!’ ” As with White, Menounos knows what Dancing visibility could do for her profile. “It’s one of the biggest shows on television, and for Extra as an entertainment-news show, it’s one of the No. 1 things we cover.” Since its host Mario Lopez was the third-season runner-up on Dancing, the syndicated Extra is sure to pay much attention to Menounos’ prowess. “I grew up cleaning nightclubs with my parents, who were immigrants to this country,” she says. “We couldn’t afford dance classes or gymnastics or any of those things other kids could do; while they were cultivating those skills, I was cultivating a work ethic.” For all the rehearsal time involved in Dancing With the Stars — now seen in repeats on Game Show Network, too — White has other irons in the fire. 20
