This Week’s Feature Story
Ringmaster - Dancing For A Cause For lovers of lively stage performances don’t miss the latest production from the talented Cada Players – Ringmaster. The performance takes the audience on a journey through the dreams of Renaldo, the Ringmaster, as he struggles to win the heart of his life-long love, Mariella. Choreography influenced by Samba, Bollywood, Hip Hop, Modern, Waltz, Jazz, Ballet, and Slavic dance comes to life in his reveries, while acrobats, clowns, jugglers and gypsies intersperse the fun and frolic of the circus. There’s more icing on the cake when the spotlight falls on guest artists, the Filipino Dance Ensemble and AcroYoga Vision. This fast-paced cavalcade of dance features alloriginal choreography performed by a troupe of 50 dancers. According to show producer Sarah Penney, “Audiences will be amazed at the strength, depth and mastery of the local talent showcased in this production.” Co-producer and founder of the Players, Joanne Penney, added that, “This is our 17th show since we began in 1997, and we aim to fully satisfy those with an appetite for a quality show that begins and ends on a high note.” The entire cast of Ringmaster has generously
donated their time and talent so that all proceeds can benefit Harmony House, a children’s home in Haiti run by the BVI grassroots charity, Hands On Volunteers (www.handsonvolunteers.org). HOV’s Harmony House currently nurtures ten young people, aged 3 to 17, and another dozen children who live outside the home are also being supported. HOV visits Haiti every two months, and April’s trip will include a dentist to provide care for both Harmony House and the neighborhood children. So catch this latest exciting experience in performance art at HLSCC at 8:00pm on Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31st, and also at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 1st. Tickets are $15 Student, $25 Adult and $35 VIP, and are available at Vanterpool’s or by calling 494-2324. – Jan Critchley

Belly up to the Bar “Three rum and tonics, a Sea Breeze, one vodka cranberry and an orange juice, please.” Well that might be all well and good for a professional bartender to keep in his head, but my response when bar-tending at the regatta village, is usually: “two at a time, please.” That’s partly because I have to remember what goes into a Sea Breeze, which is a drink sailors particularly like when there hasn’t been any breeze. I began bartending at the regatta when it first started over 40 years ago. Someone had the bright

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Ask Koren Obsessed with a broken heart Dear Koren, I am in love to the point where I am obsessed. I was seeing a married man and we work at the same place. He says he doesn’t want me, but I do not believe him. I am sure with a little coaxing he will come back to me. He has beaten me several times and told me to leave him alone. I believe this is a game of his and I enjoy playing it. I cannot get him out of my mind and I think this is only a phase. Do I wait until he comes out of this and comes back to me, or do I continue trying until he gets it? Us being together is destiny and it will happen again. It’s just taking too long. What do I do?
fessed by now and it would not result in physical violence. This has passed the stage of a little coaxing. This is at the stage where you need to wake up and understand that you deserve to be with someone who can love you the way you love them – in a strong, passionate way and who will treat you with kindness and care. Also, he is married. There is no future in that for you; yet another reason to run in another direction. You do not want to come across as desperate and needy if you are really not that. Your behaviour should highlight your strength and beauty, not hide it. I suggest you get some help in dealing with this situation. Speak with a trained counselor or psychologist who can help you to accept the situation and to understand why want to keep trying for something that is obviously gone. That energy and drive and persistence would serve you well in other areas of your life.
–Obsessed with a broken heart Dear Obsessed, It must be really difficult to be in love with someone and not have them feel the same way about you. It sounded like you had a relationship at some point and now his feelings have changed, but you still feel the same way. If you have tried to reconcile as you obviously have and he is maintaining he is not interested, then for your sanity, you must try to move on. His feelings are so strong that he is being aggressive with you in an attempt to help you to understand that he is serious. A man that loves you or wants to be with you will not beat you several times to get you to leave him alone. If it was a game, he would have con-

Leaving One Tree Hill: The resilient CW drama signs off who concedes, “Nine years was more than we expected, but it’s been a wonderful run for us. Maybe two of the nine seasons we felt fairly secure we were coming back; the other years, when we did cliffhangers, I just felt instinctually that we were coming back, and we took that risk.” For Haley, much of the final round of One Tree Hill meant fretting about her missing husband, Nathan (James Lafferty), kidnapped after an overseas trip. Besides playing out that storyline, Galeotti has tested herself in other ways through the show, directing three episodes and also performing in an actual concert tour inspired by the series. “I am eternally grateful to Mark and Joe (Davola, another One Tree Hill executive producer) for sending us out on that,“ she reflects. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, something I actually thought I wanted to pursue at one point. And I realized, ‘I really don’t like being on the road!’ It fulfilled whatever I needed to fulfill, then I didn’t need it anymore.” Galeotti still records and does occasional shows with her partner in the duo Everly, longtime friend Amber Sweeney. Likening himself to the One Tree Hill character Mouth (played by Lee Norris), Schwahn put much of his own background into the series. He deems reaching the finale “bittersweet, but I always had a feel for the tone of the ending. I didn’t know specifically what it would be until we got into the season and started breaking stories; those inform where you’re going to go, and I think where we’ve ended up is really satisfying and wonderful.” At least for now, One Tree Hill repeats will remain on cable network SoapNet’s schedule. That’s another bonus for Schwahn, who began the show’s final year knowing it would be the end.
About to be in television’s rearview mirror: the town of Tree Hill, N.C. For proof of what compelling characters, smart writing and solid acting can do, witness the staying power of One Tree Hill over nine seasons. Without a “name” cast — though Moira Kelly and Craig Sheffer had some movie fame, and Barry Corbin was known from the series Northern Exposure — the show premiered quietly on a network that no longer exists (The WB) and ultimately would last almost a decade ... thanks largely to the devoted fan base it built. One Tree Hill ends its run Wednesday, April 4, on The CW with a two-hour event — a retrospective followed by the actual final episode — that’s likely to be as emotional for its loyal audience as it was for its cast and crew when filming wrapped late last year. The fact that production finished months ago is allowing for a relatively quick DVD release of the entire final season, set for April 10. “It’s hard to see photos from the set and think, ‘I’m never going to be in a room with all the same people again,’ ” says actress Bethany Joy Galeotti, who was Bethany Joy Lenz when she began her series-spanning role as young wife, mother and sometimes music star Haley James Scott. “I’m sure I’ll go back to Wilmington (the North Carolina city where the show was made) and work with some of those guys again, but not in that particular combination.” Foremost among the makers of One Tree Hill has been creator and executive producer Mark Schwahn, 9

The Descendants A beautifully wrought and intensely emotional film, my first thought was that the title was misleading. The Descendants is about a family land decision spawned from an inheritance generations ago on the incredibly lush island of Kauai in Hawaii, but the land transaction plays second fiddle to the main character Matt King’s (George Clooney) journey to find himself. Director and co-writer Alexander Payne (the film: Sideways), seems to have an uncanny knack for casting men in roles where they are forced to “unmask” and show their authentic feelings. A busy lawyer and a self-prescribed back up-dad, Matt finds himself in a personal crisis when his wife Elizabeth is in a boating accident that puts her in a coma. His two daughters, teenager Alexandra and ten year old Scottie, are potentially without a mother and Matt who has invested time in his business over his family soon gets a rude wake -up call. Alexandra displays all the aloofness and rebellion of a teen, needing her father desperately, but acting out instead, while Scottie hides in the shadows unsure of how to handle this dramatic change in her life. When the decision is made to remove Elizabeth’s life support, Matt is left with the unenviable task of informing the extended family and friends, who might want to say goodbye with Matt’s father–in law particularly bitter over the situation. Add to this, the family pressure to sell this inherited tract of land to commercial developers with Matt holding the controlling shares in the estate and ambivalent towards the sale. George Clooney deserves the accolades he has

The plot thickens as Alexandra reveals knowledge of her mother’s ongoing affair before the accident. Some of the funniest moments involve Matt’s tracking down with Alexandra’s help the “happily married” real estate agent with his own family, who does not want to be exposed for the affair. Some of the most moving moments are Matt’s times of working through his feelings of anger and hurt with a wife who can’t respond. The eventual bonding of the daughters with their father gives the story an upbeat end, but it is the journey there, which gives the film its substance. 15

Johnny’s Womens Football League Set To Go After playing the U.S. Virgin Islands earlier this month, the resurgence of women’s football in the territory comes full circle on Sunday, with the opening of the BVI Football Association Johnny Hassan Women’s Football League, which has attracted five teams. The league marks the first time women will play league matches in several years and the first time since men’s play returned to the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds in 2010. Hassan is a former BVIFA president and he is also a former president of the BVI Athletics Association and a 1980 founding member for the BVI Olympic Committee, serving as its first Secretary General. Activities will begin with a 3:30 p.m. opening ceremony at the the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, featuring the Woules, Panthers, No Fears, Ball Stars and VG United, before two matches will follow. The league comes on the heels of the BVI and USVI playing in two matches earlier this month where the home side ended a 5-year scoring drought against their USVI counterparts, following a 2-0 victory in the second match, after falling 1-0 in their first encounter. “I was really surprised when a couple of the Football Association members came to the office and told me,” Hassan said. “It was truly a surprise, but I do appreciate it.” Speaking on last Thursday night’s Sports Beat Magazine on ZROD 103.7 FM, Hassan recalled the early days of football in the territory, noting matches were played on the Old Recreation Grounds which is now home to softball, before moving to what has become the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. “It was just pick up games here and there until the new field came and then we started official league

matches there,” he said of the BVIFA which was formed in 1974. “In those days, the players were generally committed to sports. Nowadays you see some younger players with faster moves, but we need more commitment to match those special players in the old days.” Hassan, who saw the BVI vs USVI matches, said he didn’t like what he saw in the first game when they lost 1-0, but liked what he saw in the second game during their 2-0 triumph. “I saw some sparkle to really fight and the spirit to fight for the national team was there and they really came out to play,” he observed. “There are a few things that can be polished here and there to make them better, like how to attack the ball and how to collect the ball. However, all of that can come in the future, not in a couple matches, but the team looked good. The potential is there. They just need a little more hard work and refinement and I think the association is capable of following up on it.” 19
