This Week’s Feature Story
Travis Walters Is On To The Next Chapter Travis has always had the support of his family, who continue to be supprotive in spite of critics saying he should put shcool first and then recording later. However, Travis had these words in light of those critisims, “school will always be there but this opportunity will not always be there for me... It is best that I take this opportunity now and if it doesn’t work out then I can go back to school.” Travis’ original piece Life’s a Movie garnered him alot of attention when he performed it at Zrod’s Top 7@7 Awards Show. Little did he know R.A.Y.D.A.R Management visionary Ray Daniels saw the him that night and recognized his potential. He has also done a duet called VIP Room with local singer Monea Richardson and has a single Go, which is yet to be released. Travis who has always been hardworking and dedicated is grateful for the opportunity to be able to do what he loves and is eager to get it done. He feels very motivated and supported by the people around him and he will no doubt go out there and make himself and the BVI proud.
The BVI is bursting at the seams with talent and 17 year old Travis Walters is just another of the youngtalented sters that the BVI has to offer. Travis made local headTravis Walters lines recently when he decided to the take the opprotunity to move to the United States to persue his dream of being a international recording artiste. This once in a lifetime opportunity came at a time when Travis was about to start his higher education. He had secured a scholarship from the government and was expected to attend the HLSCC but when the he decided to defer his shcolarship to pursue his dreams he was asked by the government to give a valid reason for doing so. To the youngster’s amazement the government came up with an idea of its own to sponsor him to go and represent the territory through his music.

Preserving Virgin Islands History For sometime I have wanted to visit the historic 178-year-old synagogue in St Thomas, which carries the impressive title of “the oldest synagogue in continual use in the Western Hemisphere.” Considered a National Historic Landmark, it has had both its share of visitors and worshippers over the last century plus. So Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), which fell on September 28 this year, seemed like a fitting time to enjoy a High Holy Day service and also appreciate this architectural marvel. Located in downtown Charlotte Amalie on a hill affectionately known as “synagogue hill,” The Hebrew Congregation, (as it is known), sits midway up the hill with an entrance facing the street. It is no easy feat to reach by car or foot, as the street is narrow and steep, but most seem to manage by parking below and hiking the incline. The congregation is built in the Sephardic (descendants of the Jews from Spain) style, which includes the placement of the benches where congregants sit (made from local mahogany wood), facing each other. The traditional rectangular “bimah” where the rabbi or reader stands, is in the center by one wall facing the “Holy Ark” (cabinet) on the opposite wall, where the Torah Scrolls are kept. However what strikes most visitors when first
Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
entering the arched portico entranceway is the sand floor - yes, fine grains of sand about an inch or two thick over a hard concrete subfloor. One might think this is a Caribbean touch with all our fine beaches, but actually this dates back to a custom in 15th century Spain during the time of religious persecution when Jews had to worship secretly and sand helped muffle the sounds of prayer. As this was originally a Sephardic congregation, the tradition continued. Aside from the architectural heritage, the congregation also has a menorah of Spanish origin that dates back to the 11th century and a central chandelier still lit by candles on important holidays. So envision flickering lights, a sand floor, traditional Hebraic prayers chanted melodically in a service that has been held in the same hallowed space for over two hundred years. Preserving our Virgin Islands history is imperative. Next time in St Thomas take some time out for a fascinating history tour of the” Congregation of Blessings, Peace and Loving Deeds.”

Galifianakis Far From ‘Bored to Death’ You still may not be sure how to pronounce, let alone spell, his last name, but thanks to such movie blockbusters as The Hangover and its recent sequel, along with very successful guest appearances on Saturday Night Live, you probably know the bearded, cherubic face of Zach Galifianakis. One place you may not know him from, however, is Bored to Death, the smart and quirky HBO sitcom that begins its third season Monday, Oct. 10. Despite consistently funny scripts and a cast that includes Galifianakis (pronounced “gal-i-feh-NACK-iss,” by the way), indie film staple Jason Schwartzman and sitcom favorite Ted Danson, the series so far has achieved only “cult hit” status. “Bored to Death? That’s a show, isn’t it? On Cinemax?” Galifianakis jokes as he calls from his native North Carolina. This third season may finally attract more attention, thanks to one multiepisode story arc in which Galifianakis’ character, cranky cartoonist Ray Hueston, embarks on a torrid affair with a much older woman played by 80-year-old Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis. “Poor Olympia,” Galifianakis says, laughing. “That story line is something I really don’t know if I have seen on television, and it is exciting to explore, as they call it in the script, ‘elder love.’ Olympia actually is a little too young for me, but she’ll do. It’s just kind of interesting to be making out with such a Greek goddess.”

year-old actor’s career, which started when he abandoned his communications studies at North Carolina State University just before earning his degree, following what he terms “a bit of a nervous breakdown,” and headed to New York. A friend suggested he give stand-up a try, and after performing in a hamburger restaurant, he had what he calls “one of those great ‘Aha!’ moments” and knew he had found a career niche. “For me it was just about performing as much as anything else, and if acting came out of that, fine,” he explains. “But I really was interested just in getting an emotional response out of an audience. Eventually I started getting auditions for various things here and there, so the comedy was kind of a steppingstone, but I didn’t really have a plan.”
That’s only the latest zigzag, however, in the 425

of that very critical Vitamin “C”: • Face your fears – Sometimes our lack of confidence only manifests itself around certain people or in certain situations. If that is the case, then we need to examine what it is about that person or situation that causes us to not feel comfortable being ourselves. We then have to make a decision if we need to remove our selves or if we just need to confront the issue head on. • Acknowledge your strengths –we all have unique abilities. We contribute something to society that no one else does. So acknowledge if you are a good cook, a master at public speaking or the best computer whiz around. When we identify our strengths we will feel more confident because we are good at something. • Build on past successes – if you look back over your life so far, I’m sure you can think of things you have accomplished. Celebrate those accomplishments as they are an indicator that you are capable of doing things; and if you did them then, you could probably do more now. • Arm yourself with the right tools – if you want to be confident, put some effort into it. Dress in ways that make you feel better, speak up and be assertive, be honest with yourself and others, educate yourself with the right knowledge that will enable you to make good decisions, and know when to wear a smile. Regardless of age, race, looks, etc., don’t ever stop dreaming of what you can accomplish. The possibilities are boundless.
When we get onto that airplane to take us to Puerto Rico, we have confidence in the pilot to get us there safely, When a child jumps from the top bunk into the arms of their dad, they know without a doubt that he will catch them, when we listen to the weatherman, we believe him when he says a storm is coming. We seem to have confidence in everyone else except ourselves. The Miriam-Webster dictionary says that confidence is “the quality or state of being certain” or “a feeling or consciousness of one’s powers or reliance in one’s circumstances”. Lack of confidence paralyzes us and keeps us from moving forward. We create doubts in our mind by telling ourselves that we don’t deserve a promotion, we are lucky to have someone in our lives so we might as well put up with the abuse, we don’t deserve to be spoken to with respect by our parent, we don’t have the ability to go back to school with all those young people, etc. We create negative scenarios when there is no actual evidence to suggest we cannot accomplish something or be the person we have always dreamed of being. Lifetime’s ‘Five’ Rates A Ten Shalhoub?” Aniston directed this segment, and Clarkson says, “She’s timeless and infinitely talented, and I said to her, ‘You are good as a director! S... you! Go stand in the corner.’ Great actors make great directors.” “When you see the whole piece, it is brutal,” Clarkson says. “All have been cut down to just the emotional life.” In “Lili,” Rosario Dawson plays a successful attorney with an overbearing but loving mother (the extraordinary Jenifer Lewis) and dutiful sister (Tracee Ellis Ross). Lili needs a lumpectomy, and her mother and sister stand by her. Only one story seemed stilted: Cheyanne (Lyndsy Fonseca) is a stripper in need of a double mastectomy, and her husband, who revels in her sexiness, has to convince her that she must have the surgery. She’s terrified of how she will look and if he will still love her. She’s still gorgeous; he still adores her. Besides playing the doctor to the women with breast cancer, Pearl finds out from her doctor (Bob Newhart) that she has it. “It’s such a painful subject matter,” Tripplehorn says. “With scripts like this, I didn’t want it to be maudlin and melodramatic. It’s tricky.” The women involved, including executive producer Marta Kauffman (“Friends”), all say that if one woman watching has a mammogram as a result of the film, it will have done its job. “Get that mammogram,” Tripplehorn says. “When I was doing it, and I realized I had been working on ‘Big Love’ and I realized it had been a while.” “I did it while shooting,” Clarkson says of going for her X-rays. “There can’t be irony here. Shame on me if there is — I had a breast scare early on.”
The women are young, middle-aged, black, white, a lawyer and a stripper. Breast cancer knows no boundaries, and that comes across in the stories told in Lifetime’s compelling “Five”, airing Monday, Oct. 10. Five women, at different stages in life and with different stages of cancer, are shown in five stories told by five different directors: Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Keys, Demi Moore, Patty Jenkins and Penelope Spheeris. The film’s one constant is Pearl (Jeanne Tripplehorn, “Big Love”). The movie opens on July 20, 1969, with Pearl as a girl. Her mom (Ginnifer Goodwin) is dying of breast cancer, and her grandmother (Annie Potts, giving credence to the old line that there are no small roles) tells her that her mom has a cold. “I felt a little more confident knowing there are people like Pearl,” she says. Pearl, by nature, is a quiet role. For wickedly fun drama, however, Patricia Clarkson’s Mia is stunning. Mia’s longtime husband abandons her while she is sick from chemo. She’s bold enough to throw her own funeral and says what she really thinks of those attending. Mia has that brutal honesty of those who run out of time. She drinks a bottle of Cristal a day, fritters away her savings and lives life as if each day were her last because it could be. It’s not spoiling anything to say that this segment ends happily because Mia’s story is told with the ending first. “And then I live and marry Tony Shalhoub,” Clarkson says. “Who would not want to marry Tony 13
