VI Showcase @ HLSCC Saturday with The Morris Mark Family ALSO THIS WEEK: 2nd Annual Tortola Boat Show • Chic Fashion Revolution • “Thursty” Thursday • Scary Costume Party

This Week’s Feature Story

VI Showcase at HLSCC with the Morris Mark Family This Saturday, 14th April at 8:00pm, HLSCC’s Performing Series will present a Virgin Islands Showcase, featuring the Morris Mark family of Virgin Gorda, at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium. This musical family is fronted by Morris, Sr., who arrived in the Virgin Islands in 1964 from St. Lucia with dreams of making a name for himself in the world of music. While he loved poetry, his passion for music was quite evident as he listened to the radio and learned every song by heart. His talent has clearly rubbed off and other family members, Martino, Marcus and Morris, Jr. (sons), and Miriam (daughter) are all recording artists. Martino has been on tour as far as Japan and Ghana with reggae singer Kevin Little and Miriam is the first BVI female artist to write, compose, and be executive producer of her own album. Marcus is a well-known producer, and has played with Stevie Wonder, Third World and Steel Pulse. Morris, Jr., is a drummer and vocalist. Morris originally joined the Police Band in his hometown, Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, called “Southern Brothers.” He took up the job of a strolling singer at Little Dix Bay Hotel, moving from table to table during dinner

Morris Mark Sr.

with his guitar. Shortly after, he started what may very well be the first electric dance band called the “Wanderers,” which later came to be known as “Morris Mark and the Mark 5.” Over the years, Morris has come to love the Virgin Islands and considers it home. He has composed graduation songs for local schools and perhaps no other song testifies to his love for the VI, as does Beautiful Day in Paradise. Today he can still be found at Little Dix Bay, or the Mine Shaft Café, or many other venues doing what he loves best: that is, singing to the delight of young and old, residents and visitors. Tickets for the concert are $20 each, available from the usual outlets or by calling 852-7223. – Jan Critchley

It’s Traditional to accept that hardly anything ever starts on time. It’s traditional! There are a few customs, however, that can be considered to be annoying at best and quite dangerous at the worst. As with all of the traditional customs described by the Trade Winds in their song, West Indians enjoy pushing the boundaries of social interaction and the law, but sometimes it gets to a point when it can go a bit too far. The practice of speeding through the traffic signals when it's on amber and sometimes just turned to red is extremely risky and fraught with danger. I witness this almost on a daily basis and can only hope that the consequences aren't too serious when it goes horribly wrong. Another practice, which is more annoying than anything else, is that of parking in the driveways of parking lots when it is almost empty, sometimes blocking one lane of the entrance. Whatever they may be, West Indians are proud of most of their traditions, after all, they are some of the things that make us unique as a people. We should, however, try to avoid those things that hinder our social interactions and border on being dangerous. They are NOT traditional!

Not many of our readers would be familiar with the song It's Traditional by the Trade Winds, but I’m sure a few of the older ones are. The song highlights, very humorously, a few of the not so admirable West Indian customs that have become traditional and synonymous with this part of the world. In one of my favorite parts, lead vocalist Dave Martin describes our world-renowned laid back and almost casual approach to work. He points out that if you go into a store down town to buy a fountain pen, everyone's out to lunch and it's only half-past ten. If you ask to see the manager, he's out drinking with his friend. It's traditional. Of course not every West Indian is guilty of this sort of behavior but I'm sure we can all relate to it or know someone who is. Also, I'm sure that attitudes have changed a bit over the years and like so many of our old traditions, those are dying out as well. Every country in the world had its own traditions and customs, some of which can be a bit irritable to foreigners or those not too familiar with them and the BVI is no exception to many of these traditions. For example, when it comes to the issue of punctuality, everyone seems

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Ask Koren I’m Not Your Superwoman She maintains a clean home, makes the best pies and manages to keep the kids well disciplined and makes time to help them with homework every night. When she leaves the home, she is always impeccably and stylishly dressed and outperforms her male counterparts at work. She speaks well, handles her finances and seems to have it all together. If she happens to get angry or not be there for someone who needs her just one time, then she is brutally battered and raked over hot coals, just because her angelic halo slipped a wee bit. For decades and as far back as we can remember, many of us have bought into the superwoman myth; that a woman must be capable of holding down all her responsibilities and still take care of everyone else around her. Some men can get away with having extra weight and no one hassles them, they turn their back on children and never look back, but if a woman were to do that, it would be equated to murder. They can drive badly, spend recklessly and sleep around, but a woman must be the paragon of virtue. I’m not here advocating that a woman should not try to excel at what she does, but fair is fair. A woman should not have to be anybody’s superwoman! If in trying to be the best she can, she is absolutely amazing, then that is wonderful. But trying to pressure herself into pleasing everyone just to prove a point is

Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

futile and stressful and a recipe for depression. So please women, start saying no to things that hurt you and things you don’t have the time for and commit to what is important to you. Stop trying to be everyone’s best friend and everyone’s savior and in the process end up losing yourself. Free yourself from the burden of people pleasing and trying to live up to their expectations and do what you know is best for your life. Set goals that will help you to achieve your dreams. It might not be to be a biological mother or a career woman; it might be to work as an architect or a singer or to adopt a child. Also, suits were not made for everyone and all women will not feel at home in the kitchen. So women, start taking care of yourself; throw away the cape, lighten up your load and give up on being a superwoman. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com and a response will be provided

Jennie Garth Goes Country With Her Daughters On CMT 9-year-old Lola and 5-year-old Fiona — also got to experience the making of a TV show. “At first, the littlest one didn’t like it,” Garth reports. “It’s a very small crew, but she was intimidated by people being in our space. Now she loves it! She knows the people by name and loves them and asks, ‘When are they coming?’ Living there is gorgeous and amazing, but it can be a little isolated, so it’s nice when we get visitors. “Whatever pushed me to move to the country when I did,” Garth says, “was some sort of internal thing to protect me from what was coming down the pike for me personally. I needed to be in a calmer, quieter place, and it cushioned me. I just needed that.”

Jennie Garth is starting over in many ways, and she’s inviting viewers along for her reboot. The former Beverly Hills, 90210 and What I Like About You star has been prominent in entertainment news headlines lately for her pending divorce from actor Peter Facinelli Twilight. Paralleling the separation is her move with her three daughters to a central California farm, detailed by Country Music Television as the unscripted series Jennie Garth: Little Bit Country premieres Friday, April 20. “I like to think of this as an ‘alternate reality’ show, because my life is like an alternate reality most of the time,” Garth muses. “I didn’t think I would be talking about my separation or my divorce, but I decided to share my experience with people because I feel I want to help other women. I want to take the secrecy out of this. We all grapple with the same issues, no matter who we are.” The framework for Little Bit Country was put in place some time ago, Garth explains. “I had wanted to move out of the city (Los Angeles) up to where my parents were living to spend more time with my dad before he passed away. I didn’t quite make it, and after he died, I still wanted to do this. I wanted to raise my girls in a normal environment, what I experienced ... the freedom of living in the country.” Garth and Facinelli’s offspring — 14-year-old Luca, 9

The Vow used to stitch everything together. Because this is very much a before-and-after story, it expends a lot of effort shifting between the eras, filling in the blanks for us and using flashbacks so that we can see the background and future of the couple’s relationship. Without giving too much away, the ending, though not entirely ideal, is really moving. However one of the best lines in the movie is when Leo says," Life is all about moments, of impacts and how they can change our lives forever. But what if one day you could no longer remember any of them?"

Inspired by a true story, The Vow is a story full of love, hope and faith and an unwavering belief in the vows that one remarkable couple makes to each other and that Leo (Channing Tatum) refuses to relinquish even when the situation seemed impossible to view any other way. The Vow takes its time to build its characters and starts with a date night at the movies for young married couple Paige (Rachel McAdams) and Leo. Then a freak accident on the way home changes both their lives forever. When Paige wakes up from a medically induced coma, her memory has been wiped clean, and thus starts Leo's bid to help her remember their life and their love. When she can’t, he does not give up, but tries everything to get her to remember their past and fall for him again. Although initially the focus is on Paige’s medical condition (it was never thought that she would survive), after she becomes more stable this is when Leo realizes that the woman he loves and married no longer remembers him. No matter what they try, a visit to their home, photographs, conversations – nothing works. It is easy to relate to Paige's increasing impatience, however Leo never wavers from being the longsuffering heroic husband with his voice-over memories 15

A Record Medal Haul Before I begin supposing, let me congratulate the 2012 Carifta Games delegation—athletes, coaches, psychologist, chaperone, physiotherapist—that returned on Tuesday from Devonshire, Bermuda, with a record five medals from the three days of competition. Before they left, I had a feeling it would be something special. Since 1978 when the first medal was bagged, the territory had won 20 medals through 2011. Another two were added to the bag when on opening day, debutant Tynelle Gumbs struck gold in the Javelin with an under 17 girls’ record throw. On Sunday, Tynelle’s twin sister Trevia, picked up U17 Girls Shot Put silver, before Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner mined 800m bronze. She then contributed a second leg carry on the 4x100m relay, taking the baton from Jonel Lacey and passing off to Taylor Hill, as Huggins carried the team home to bronze. At that moment, BVI athletes had earned more medals in one day thank ever before, equaling the total amounts won in 2006 and 2007. The record five overall medals won carried the territory’s overall total from 20 to 25. Before we left, the possibility of eight medals was tossed around. Skeptics would have put that to pure fantasy and simple craziness. But with that in mind, please allow me for a moment to do just a little supposing. Just suppose Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses didn’t strain her hamstring and she was able to run the 400m final, following a personal best of 55.62 in the heats? That would have added no less than silver.

L-R: Nelda Huggins, Tynelle Gumbs, Jonel Lacey, Taylor HIll, Lakeisha "Mimi" Warner and Trevia Gumbs.

Medal six. Suppose Moses was available for the U17 Girls 4x400m relay? Medal 7. And suppose Jonel Lacey had cleared hurdle 10 in the U17 Girls 300m race? Medal 8. Suppose Nelda Huggins didn’t power out the blocks so hard from lane eight that she ran on the line in the 200m and was subsequently disqualified? Medal 9. But remember, I was just supposing! On this Carifta Games delegation, there were also a series of firsts. This was the first Carifta team to have three sets of siblings—Trevia and Tynelle Gumbs, Tarika and Lakeisah “Mimi” Warner, and Tarique and Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses; first time with two 100m finalists—Nelda Huggins and Taylor Hill; 1st time with two 300m Hurdles finalists—Jonel Lacey and Deya Erickson; first siblings to win medals, Tynelle and Trevia Gumbs; first medal won in the Javelin Throw; first medal won in the Shot Put; first relay team to win a medal; first time three medals were won in one day; first time five medals were won; first time a medal was won in the 800m and the first time two different athletes had won two medals in the same Carifta Games. Again, congratulations on the various performances. 19
