This Week’s Feature Story
Abigail Hyndman- A Tough Act to Follow Abigail Hyndman, Miss BVI 2011 is going to be one hard act to follow. At only 21 she comes across with a self-assurance that is beyond her years. Her next challenge is just over a week away, as she prepares for the prestigious 7th annual Miss Caribbean World Pageant which will be on Saturday, May 5th at the Multipurpose Sports Complex from 7pm. One of the many opportunities awarded to Miss BVI, is the once in a life-time chance to compete for the coveted 61st Miss Universe Crown in December. However, being Miss BVI is also about being an ambassador for the BVI and just months after securing the title, Abigail started to make a name for herself causing heads to turn; not only for her beauty; but for her articulate presentations, winning personality and determination. In a recent interview, Abigail said that one of the highlights of her reign was a trip to Germany with the Tourist Board to the ITB Berlin tourism trade show. She
said, “I had never been to Europe before, so to meet all the different people and help promote the BVI was very special.” Abigail, who will return to her medical studies at Louisianna State University next year, took a year out from her studies to fulfill the duties of Miss BVI. She also uses her position to help victims of domestic violence and works closely with the Family Support Network (FSN) with the goal to have a shelter built on Tortola. Abigail is eager to bring the Miss Caribbean World and Miss Universe crowns home to the BVI and she knows that do to this she needs to be prepared and remain focused on the goal. She said, “I have had a wonderful year as Miss BVI 2011 and feel very confident about Miss Caribbean World, I also want to help the contestants for Miss BVI 2012 so they know what to expect and can get the most out of the experience; this has been a dream come true for me.” – Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Ask Single andKoren Bored what could have been done differently and how you have grown or not grown as a result of that relationship. This will help you to maybe do things differently next time and also to bring some closure to your feelings. Understand that being single does not mean you are half a person; you are a whole person who is just romantically unattached right now. Spend your free time doing things you enjoy - do a free course, start journaling, try new recipes, volunteer somewhere, etc. or you could reconnect with old girlfriends that you might have put aside when you started dating and even with family members who you might have neglected. There are so many activities you can engage in and had fun either alone or with others. In the meanwhile, don’t give up on true love. You never know when you will meet that special someone, maybe when you least expect it. In the meanwhile, just keep living as full a life as you can and enjoy the freedom of nurturing you.
Dear Koren, I ended a relationship the other day and now with all the extra time on my hands, I am bored. It’s only now that I realize how much time I was spending on this guy and his needs to the point where I don’t even know what my needs are. How do I rebuild my life as a single person? –Bored Dear Bored, Your simple question is loaded with a lot of issues, but I will answer simply what you asked. Ending a relationship causes a lot of different feelings for different persons – some feel regretful, some feel relieved and some feel empty. Your feelings of boredom are natural if you were used to spending a lot of time with him. Your focus must now be shifted. Imagine yourself pushing your head out of a shell like a turtle and seeing the world in a whole different light? First of all, stop calling yourself bored…start addressing yourself as “single and fabulous” and if you don’t feel fabulous, fake it until you make it (borrowed words). Being single is not a curse it is an opportunity to take stock of your life and your goals. Spend some time to assess the relationship to see

The Last Ferry Blues Living on an island is blissful, but there are times when one just has to get off. It may be for business or fun, but travelling by plane is a must for people who live in a place surrounded by water. Getting off the rock though is becoming increasingly difficult of late. Airlines are cutting back service to Beef Island and the ones that do fly here are charging higher fares. I’m not sure if a longer runway is the answer, but I do know that improved ferry schedules between St. Thomas and Tortola would be an immediate fix – one that would be less environmentally damaging than filling in a part of Trellis Bay. I have made a number of trips to the US from St. Thomas on American and Spirit in recent years, and improved ferry schedules and on-time service would take a lot of anxiety out of the trip. “What time is your last boat from Charlotte Amalie to West End next Tuesday?” I recently asked the lady at the counter of one of the ferry companies. I was going to Florida over the long Easter weekend; leaving on Thursday and returning on Tuesday. “Four pm,” she replied. “When I booked my tickets in February, your schedule said 4:30,” I told her, already feeling my anxiety level rise. My return flight on Spirit was scheduled (if all went well) to land at 3:30.

“Call on Tuesday,” she said, “and see if there is a change.” Well, I did call on Tuesday and sure enough the ferry was leaving at 4. There was no way that I was going to make that one, but fortunately their competitor was leaving at 4:30. It was a close call: if my plane had been just 30 minutes late I wouldn’t have made it. Yes, I know that there is a 9 pm ferry – but it’s only Friday to Sunday and not in the off-season when residents are still flying, even if the tourists are not. How wonderful it would be if there was a daily (and reliable) 5:30 – or even – 6pm ferry. Then if my plane was a bit late, I might actually make it home. And of course, when I go to St. Thomas to shop, an extra hour in Kmart might just come in handy!

Gary Stevens talks Kentucky Derby and ‘Luck’ Over his 40 years in and around the business, Gary Stevens has gained a unique perspective on thoroughbred racing. He is best known, of course, as the jockey with 4,888 career wins to his credit, including three Kentucky Derbies and Belmont Stakes, two Preakness Stakes, eight Breeders’ Cup races, and a record nine Santa Anita Derbies. His mounts have collected more than $221 million, and he’s a member of the Racing Hall of Fame. He’s also served as a jockey agent, a trainer for his Gary Stevens Racing Stable (which was disbanded two years ago due to the demands of his schedule), an actor in movies such as Seabiscuit and the recently canceled HBO series Luck, and a racing analyst for NBC, TVG and HRTV. It’s in that last capacity he’ll be front and center on Saturday, May 5, when NBC presents coverage of the 138th Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs in Louisville. The first leg of racing’s Triple Crown is run at 1 1/4 miles and features the sport’s top 3-year-olds. While each of the three races has its particular challenge, the big one here is crowds, and not just on the track. Yes, with up to 20 horses, the Derby typically has the largest field of the Triple Crown races, but it also draws the most humans, which can be distracting to the equine athletes on the track. “You’ve got to have a horse that handles the
atmosphere of 130,000 people,” Stevens says. “You know, they have never seen a crowd like this, and they probably will never see another crowd like that in their career unless it happens to be Breeders’ Cup day. ... It’s the first time that any of these 3-year-olds will be asked to run a mile and a quarter, and that’s the question mark: not only which horse is going to have the speed but also going to have the stamina.” As a jockey, Stevens liked to be on a horse with early speed. “Mentally and physically, I preferred to have a horse that could lay up close to the lead,” he says, “that was very tactical, that had speed when you needed it. And that’s what I look for now when I’m analyzing these races. I look for a horse with a certain type of style ... a horse that has speed from the gate to keep himself out of trouble in traffic, and obviously the less traffic you have to go through, the more chances are you’re not going to get stopped.” But unlike some jockeys, Stevens isn’t a fan of going straight to the rail. “Obviously that’s the shortest way around the racetrack,” he says, “but I think you’ve got to put your horse where he’s the most comfortable. Some horses are more comfortable outside of horses; some horses will race in between, down inside or whatever. So it just depends on the individual that you’re riding.” Until recently, Stevens showed his acting chops in Luck as troubled jockey Ronnie Jenkins. The series was canceled in March after three horses were injured during filming and had to be euthanized. Stevens was disappointed that the low-rated though critically acclaimed series didn’t make it to a second season, but he’s hopeful more such roles will come his way. 13

The Descendants This is a different role for George Clooney and well outside his comfort zone of self composed cool. In this gentle, funny and moving film he plays Matt King, who lives a comfortable life with his family in Hawaii where his ancestors have lived for generations. They are also owners of a 25,000-acre chunk of prime island real estate which Matt's cousins have put him in charge of selling, or keeping – and the impending decision is a topic of great local interest. A self-described "back-up parent" to two daughters and an inattentive husband, Matt has even bigger problems when his wife Elizabeth
