This Week’s Feature Story

A Paddling Pastime mastered the technique though, the sky is the limit and you can take to the waves with the keenest of surfers. Taking part in last year’s very first SUP Cup was an astonishing 70-racers. As this is the second year, organizer Andy Morrell, owner of locally based HIHO water sports and clothing store is hopeful of even more contenders. He said, “Last year we had 70-racers competing in three classes: Elite (5-mile race to Cane Garden Bay and back); Open (1.5-mile race around Brewers Bay); and kids (a short race off the beach). Andy continued, “Getting a new sport like SUP underway in the BVI is fun. It’s always great to see people enjoy being on the water. We’ve added SUP to our annual Highland Spring HIHO event so it would be great to see people sign up for a week of racing in that event too!” Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winners after the racing and registration is from 9:30am on Saturday morning with racing starting at 10:30am. For more information email racebvi@surfbvi.com.

Tortola’s largest SUP event is here, the second annual Malibu SUP Cup 2012, so head over to Brewer’s Bay this Saturday, 5th May to test the water and put your skills to the test! SUP is shorthand for stand-up paddleboarding and you may have seen people taking part in this relatively new breakout sport around the island. It’s kind of like surfing with a paddle that originated in Hawaii, grew up in California and is now a growing sport here in the BVI. The popularity of the sport is probably down to its broad appeal and because of this it is likely to grow quickly. The past five years have seen SUP become a global sport as it appeals to women as much as men and children, which means that couples and families can head out to SUP together which is great! What’s more is that it is fun, very easy to learn and good exercise. In addition, you don’t need waves to enjoy the experience, some people love the relaxation of paddling on flat water and will seek out areas such as Well Bay or the stretch of water under the bridge to Beef Island. Once you have

If you are acting in an unbecoming way and someone draws it to your attention, even if their approach is not right and you have to tell them off, still ponder your words or actions and see how it could have been different. You could take everything said to you with a grain of salt, but at least listen. Sift through the information presented and hold on to what is valuable and discard the rest. It’s another 7 months before Christmas and many of us will be opening all sorts of gifts. The gifts come in different shapes and sizes and wrapped in plain or brightly coloured paper. The sources also vary – family, friends, co-workers, etc. So too with criticism; it comes from different persons and are delivered differently- sometimes stated tactfully and sometimes yelled in anger. They come from persons who love us or from some who we don’t think really gives a hoot. Either way, it is often unwelcome. “Who does she think she is to tell me how to dress”. “How dare she talk about how I should raise my child when she doesn’t have children”? We feel like we have been doing something for many years and doing that one way and it has worked for us, so no one is qualified to challenge our expertise. While we may be right in what we are doing and while the person doing the critiquing might have ulterior motives or just want to put us down, let us bear certain things in mind: 1. Current Affairs With what we could call a dismal economy coupled with mounting debt, I try to stay up with what’s happening in the world and current events. I pay particular attention to the United States, especially since the US is our closest neighbor. With the current state of affairs threatening to unseat the United States as the reigning superpower of the world, being mindful of current events can’t hurt. While this is a big year in America with the first African American President hoping to be re-elected for a second term, there is one story that made and continues to make headlines. The shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, a story I am following intently. Trayvon Martin was shot on February 26, in Florida, and the news swept headlines across the US. Trayvon was a 17-year-old African American male who was shot by a community watch coordinator for a gated community, George Zimmerman. Once the news broke the major television networks were in overdrive. You couldn’t flip the TV without seeing something about it. Zimmerman claimed that while on a private errand, he saw Trayvon walking inside the gated community where

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

he was visiting his father and his father's fiancée. Zimmerman called the police to report Trayvon’s appearance and behavior as suspicious. Shortly afterwards, there was allegedly an altercation, which ended with Zimmerman fatally shooting Trayvon once in the chest at close range. Zimmerman was questioned by police and released as he claimed he shot Trayvon in selfdefense. The police confirmed that Trayvon was unarmed at the time of the shooting. After Zimmerman’s release there were cries of outrage, there were reports of racist motivation for the shooting, and just like that it felt like the 1950s again. Subsequently, Zimmerman was arrested and is now out on bail awaiting trial. I followed this story closely and watched all the TV interviews with Trayvon’s parents. In one interview she was extremely emotional and said she only seeks justice for her son. There was interview after interview, press conferences and what not, and while I think it is important for the family to stand and fight for their son and his rights my only thought was with all that’s happened this woman hasn’t had time to mourn the lost of her son and properly deal with that grief.

Giddish Brings Southern Comfort To SVU Photos of stars without makeup are a guilty pleasure for anyone who doesn’t have a beauty team. But every so often, an actress looks terrific naturally. Kelli Giddish of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, airing Wednesdays on NBC, manages to look stunning with her blond hair pulled back and no makeup. She’s in her dressing room at the Chelsea Piers on Manhattan’s far west side. Here, at the well-oiled machine that is this show in its 13th season, Giddish plays Detective Amanda Rollins, a transplant from Georgia, which is what Giddish is, albeit with a few stops in between. She’s lived in Texas, California, Georgia and New York. After Past Life and Chase, which didn’t make full seasons, she says it’s a relief to be on a show with a solid foundation. Still, dealing with people’s basest

depravities, as each episode does, takes its toll. “My dreams have become so screwed up,” Giddish says. “Once you are educated about these things going on ... .” her voice trails off. Having played a cop before, Giddish drew on that research for this role. She talked to police, went on ride-alongs and continued to ask questions. She remains haunted by going out with marshals to serve eviction notices and seeing the gut-wrenching sight of children peeking out from behind curtains, knowing they were about to become homeless. Giddish describes her character as a detective who “relies on her gut. She made sure she is versed in criminology and got that out of the way. I don’t know if she did exactly special victims.” Over the years, Giddish learned how to handle a gun and did 12 hours of training when she realized how many parts called for her to look as if she knew how to handle a gun. “I’m from Georgia, but I never shot a rifle or a shotgun or a Glock,” she says. “I don’t know how many times I shot myself in the mirror, imagining I am a cop.”

My Week with Marilyn and acting skills. Nominated for an Oscar for her role, Michelle Williams doesn’t look so much like Marilyn, as embodies her sass, sexiness and insecurities. A sweet and nostalgic movie, My Week with Marilyn offers a glimpse into Monroe’s glamorous and tumultuous life. One of the world’s most well-known and charismatic figures, her inner demons eventually got the better of her, and she died from a drug overdose in 1962 at the age of 36. This fable of an enchanted life is a glimpse into a happier time.

Like any classic fairy tail, My Week with Marilyn combines a beautiful princess (in this case 1950s Hollywood royalty, Marilyn Monroe) and a young and naive prince. The prince is the 23-year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), the third director on the 1957 film, The Prince and the Showgirl which was being filmed at Pinewood Studios in England. Based on Clark’s memoir, the movie depicts a fragile Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) who comes into conflict with the film’s director and leading man, the acclaimed British actor, Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). A narcissistic and bullying presence, Olivier is jealous of Monroe’s star power and undermines her self-confidence and ability to perform. Accompanying her to Pinewood is an entourage that includes her acting coach, business partner and her new husband, the acclaimed playwright Arthur Miller, who stifled by Monroe’s neediness, returns to New York. Although Monroe is encouraged by veteran actress Dame Sybil Thorndike (Judy Dench), with so much conflict on both the set and in her personal life, Monroe eventually comes unglued. Thirty-years-old and feeling alone and abandoned, the actress quits the set and instead takes to her bed, anaesthetized by pills and booze. The only person that she trusts is the young and smitten Clark, and she invites him to spend the week with her. It is the stuff of dreams and he takes her on a whirlwind tour of Windsor Castle where she camps it up for the enchanted staff, mesmerizes the boys at Colin’s former prep-school and on a picnic skinny dips in a stream. Away from her handlers and the bullying Olivier, she blossoms. As the week draws to a close, Monroe has regained her confidence and returns to the set where she wows even Olivier with her charm Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
