Is It Too Soon To Get Married

you away from someone else, or to get over another relationship? If those are not possible scenarios and you feel it is genuine love, then it is easier to consider the idea. Marriage should be a lifelong commitment and is not something to take lightly; it is one of the major decisions you will make in your life. Some marriage specialists advise that a couple should date for a minimum of six months before they make a permanent commitment for marriage. In addition, to the time, you want to ensure that you have similar goals and values and you have discussed important issues like having and raising children, money management, religious beliefs, home ownership, etc., to ensure that you are on the same page. So when you make that important decision and say yes, ensure that you sign up for pre-marital counseling to deal with communication building, conflict resolution, partner roles and so on; because even if you have a short engagement, you want to make sure that you are laying the foundation for a long and happy marriage.

Dear Koren, I am wondering if you can answer this question for me. I am in love with this man for a short while and we live together. He wants us to get married but I think it is too soon. How long should two people be together before they should get married? – Wondering Dear Wondering, Can I throw a question back at you? If you have only known him for a short while, how do you know that you are really in love and not just infatuated? Also, the fact that you are living with him says that you already have some level of commitment toward the guy. In relationships, time is important; the longer you know the person and have constant contact with them, the more likely it is that you will know them better. That is, unless they are an Oscar-worthy actor. However, time is definitely not the only factor to be considered to know if the person is right for you or if you should get married. I think it is admirable that he wants to get married to you, but you have to be practical also. Look at the situation objectively and make an assessment of whether he is seeking any other benefits from being married to you, other than love. Is he asking you for financial or citizenship reasons? Is he asking to keep

‘Here’s Johnny!’: ‘American Masters’ Spotlights Carson Carson’s perennial announcer and sidekick) and me probably more than for Johnny. He appreciated what was happening, but he was very realistic.” Severinsen, Steve Martin, Bob Newhart, Don Rickles and Mel Brooks are among the many Carson friends and peers in the two-hour documentary by Emmy-winning filmmaker Peter Jones. Letterman, Carson’s Tonight successor Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon, Dick Cavett (who wrote jokes for Carson) and former Carson guest host Joan Rivers (shut out by him once she became his rival on Fox) also are featured ... but interestingly for someone who gave few interviews, a great deal of the commentary is by Carson, who resisted assisting in the project before his 2005 death. Such excerpts are taken from a Tonight chat with Hollywood columnist Rona Barrett, an appearance on Phil Donahue’s talk show, a famous profile by Mike Wallace for CBS’ 60 Minutes and the 1982 NBC special Johnny Goes Home, which took Iowa native Carson back to his boyhood base in Nebraska. His remarks on such matters as his failed marriages and his inability to handle drinking were surprisingly candid for such an intensely private man. However, many believe they also increased the public’s endearment toward him.

From 1962 to 1992, keeping America entertained late at night largely was the duty of one man. And it was a task Johnny Carson performed willingly and enjoyably, as his iconic status as longtime caretaker of NBC’s The Tonight Show confirms. David Letterman’s new CBS contract will make him the longest-running after-hours host in television history, but even he acknowledges the late Carson was the king — as does PBS’ highly enjoyable, thoughtfully organized American Masters profile Johnny Carson: King of Late Night, debuting Monday, May 14 (check local listings). “It’s always nice to look back when you’re looking at good things,” reasons trumpeter Doc Severinsen, Carson’s bandleader for 25 of the 30 years of his Tonight tenure. “I don’t think there was ever a day when we didn’t realize where we were and what we had, but that would be true for Ed (McMahon,

“Paws” are Always Worth the Cause It is heartening to see a growing cadre of animal lovers and protectors in the BVI. Grass-roots organizers have created online group sites like “Help the Animals in the BVI” through Facebook, a place to report missing pets or to possibly adopt one from the Humane Society of the BVI. Others are pushing for government legislation regarding cruelty to animals. For most people, pets are precious members of their family and deserve protection and care. No animal should go neglected, hungry or suffer abuse. The ASPCA a well-known organization that advocates for protection against animal cruelty states: “Animals feel pain and fear like we do, but they are often helpless victims because they can’t say what happened to them. In fact, some people choose to abuse animals instead of people for this very reason! Violence toward animals can be an indicator that people are also in danger. Someone who commits animal abuse may have serious psychological problems. Studies have found that many people convicted of violent crimes had a history of animal cruelty.” I often hear wonderful “rescue” stories of someone who has found an abandoned cat or dog on the island and taken him or her under their wing. My wonderful orange tabby cat of nine years Marmalade, may have suffered an early death had I not spotted him under a parked car in East End two days in a row, meowing his little kitten heart out. I passed by the first day, sure he would be found or returned to his mother. The second day I had a decision to make, would I pass by a second time or take in a cat to a growing animal family? I was glad I made the second

Marmalade in my suitcase

decision and I am sure he is too and presently sporting a Garfield-like plumpness and “attitude” I may add. An inseparable part of my animal menagerie, Marmie is the soft purring vibrating fluff that takes up the space on my comfortable armchair between where my hip ends and the padded side of the arm rest starts. It’s hard to imagine sitting in that chair without him. I recently also agreed to dog walk another rescue dog named “Rafa,” whose owners care so much for their little island dog, that they are willing to pay for his afternoon exercise when they are not able to be home and let him out. I grew fond of this little low-tothe-ground mix breed with his big ears, keen sense of smell and ability to dig out sand crabs and chase them into the water on our daily beach walk. I wondered what his fate might have been if two people hadn’t taken the time and effort to nurture him to health from his state as an abandoned puppy. We often hear the phrase, “we are our brother’s keeper, but aren’t we also called to protect all the defenseless – including animals? 13

We Bought A Zoo We Bought a Zoo is based on a true story and a book of the same title and adapted for the big screen by acclaimed filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous). This is a great movie about moving on and the courage that it takes to embark on a new life. Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) is struggling to hold onto his family and his Los Angeles journalism career after the recent death of his wife, Katherine (Stephanie Szostak). He has yet to get a grip on being a single parent to 14-year-old Dylan (Colin Ford) and 7year-old Rosie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones), whether he’s fumbling with school lunches or warding off predatory moms bearing trays of condolence lasagna. When his editor doesn’t respond to his story pitches, Benjamin quits his job and decides his family needs a fresh start. He sells their home and buys a picturesquely dilapidated house with mountain views that also turns out to be a zoo. There are, of course, complications ¬– the zoo, having fallen into disrepair, has been closed and the animals cared for by the sheer goodwill of employees, in particular zookeeper, Kelly Foster (Scarlett Johansson). Despite their initial reservations – with the help of the staff, the zoo squeaks and roars back into shape. The enclosures are repaired and expanded, the bills and employees paid. Little Rosie takes to Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

her new home swimmingly, but Dylan misses his old life and friends and expresses his frustrations in his dark artwork. It takes Kelly’s attentive and insatiably happy cousin, Lily (Elle Fanning) to help him see beyond his own anguish. Benjamin, meanwhile, continues to keep it together, his facade of confidence only occasionally dinged by the sheer amount of work to be done. However, with the help of his family and his eclectic staff, they return the zoo to beyond its former glory and they open their doors on time to the delight of visitors who turn up in droves, making the adventure worthwhile in more ways than one.

Virgin Gorda’s First Half Marathon If you like challenges, here’s one for you. Seven years after the BVI Half Marathon began on Tortola, the inaugural Virgin Gorda Half Marathon—which also has a 6 Mile Challenge and Run/Walk segment—will kick off at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. Simply put, it offers the toughest road racing course in the British Virgin Islands—a test of stamina, endurance and mental capacity. Dubbed ‘Round and Round’ Virgin Gorda, this event offers a challenging three laps route around the Valley, encompassing some of the territory’s iconic tourist attractions and scenic vistas. “This is an exciting event for Virgin Gorda, both for local runners and walkers, but also for a good tourism product here on the island,” race director Casey McNutt said. “We have an amazing challenging route around the Valley. We go up to Coppermine, out to the Baths, around the Valley and we’ve got some amazing breathtaking views around this route, but also a lot of hills.” More than 40 persons have preregistered for the event as of May 6, half of them for the Half Marathon course. The race starts by the Scotiabank parking lot in the Marina, heads east with a right turn up to Speedy’s Corner, then a right out to Coppermine. It returns from Coppermine to the Baths, then back to the start. It ends at CocoMaya Restaurant in the area of Andy’s Chateau. “We do this three times cutting out a piece every time until we get to the Half Marathon route of 13.1 miles,” McNutt stated. “It’s 13.1 really tough miles but that’s not all – we have a six mile route too, for anyone not trained for 13.1 miles. It’s the first loop of the

Maxford Pipe, right, will defend his turf

course, with plenty of views and plenty of hills and a whole lot of fun.” Of those preregistered, McNutt said 21 were signed up for the Half Marathon and the rest for the 6 mile course. There are also another 15 runners interested. “Until they pay the registration fee, they’re not on the list, but I think we’ll get about 60 or 70 participants for this event and I’m hoping for beautiful weather,” she said. “But we’re going to have loads of people lining the streets cheering on everybody.” Registration, which costs $65 for the Half Marathon and $50 for the 6 Mile course, runs through 6:15 a.m. on Saturday morning. There’s a $25 registration fee for Under 16 participants. The fee includes a gift bag, T-shirt, finisher’s medal and breakfast. Proceeds from the race will go to VISAR. McNutt said they are catering for 100 people and if the numbers hit that point before Saturday, the race is closed. Information about the race is available online at racevirgingorda.com. The Virgin Gorda Half Marathon is the second such event in the territory with the BVI Half Marathon—now in its 7th year—scheduled for November 17. 17
