This Week’s Feature Story
Sugar Mill Artist Goes International Jinx Morgan is probably best known in the BVI for the tranquil boutique hotel and restaurant – the Sugar Mill, which she owns with her husband Jeff. In addition to its numerous awards, the charming property recently earned the prestigious Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and Travelers’ Choice Awards for 2012. Jinx, however has other talents, and is a painter whose watercolors reflect the fresh colors and brilliant light that are distinctively Caribbean. Inspired by the strong sun and shadow patterns of the tropics, her paintings depict the easygoing life here. Her paint of choice is to use watercolors as, she says, “No other medium seems to convey the sparkle and transparency of the water ¬– and the clarity of the light we have in the BVI.” Recently she was featured in the June/July issue of Destinasia – a luxury travel and lifestyle magazine available in Asia and the Pacific. Asked how this magazine came to know of her work, Jinx said, “They were doing a series of profiles of
island artists and luckily they found my website and decided to feature my work in this issue. I am always happy to be able to talk about the beautiful BVI.” She has studied with David Millard, Judi Betts, James Godwin Scott, Jeanne Dobie and Carolyn Lord and her paintings are included in private collections in the United States, Canada, England, Italy and Austria as well as in the Caribbean. Born in California, Jinx began painting when she moved to the BVI nearly three decades ago to open the Sugar Mill. She said, “I could never be short of inspiration living in such an incredibly beautiful place where there’s a paintable scene around just about every corner.” On Tortola, you can view her paintings and prints at The Gallery on Main Street, at Bamboushay at Nanny Cay, and at the Sugar Mill Gallery at the Sugar Mill Hotel in Apple Bay. In St. Thomas her work is available at Mango Tango Gallery. For more information on Jinxs’ paintings go to www.watercolorsbyjinx.com. – Jan Critchley

not hurt again, so they will be concerned. Also, if they never met this guy and did not realize you were communicating with him, then they don’t have as clear an idea as you do, the stage you are at in the friendship. They don’t have all the information. Maybe your parents have had to rescue you in the past as a result of bad decisions or if you are apt to impulsive behaviour; but you are at the age, where you must take responsibility for your own life. Don’t be ungrateful though; I would imagine that you have already thanked your parents for being there for you in the past. While I think you have a right to make your own decisions, I do believe they deserve the consideration of an explanation. Let them know you are not making a rash decision and remind them that a commitment to date someone exclusively is not marriage. There is still the courtship period when you can more keenly observe his behaviour and his attitude and decide if you want to have a more long term arrangement or not. Going forward, while you might have support, learn to make decisions thoughtfully and understand what the risks are, so that you are not caught too offguard if things don’t go well.
Dear Koren, Two years ago I had a bad break up with a guy I really loved and I was broken and depressed for months. Although I am in my mid-twenties, my parents were very supportive and really looked after me during that difficult time. However, I met a guy at my friends workplace Christmas party and we have been talking on the phone and went out with my friend and her boyfriend twice. Now I am ready to commit to a serious relationship, my parents are being overprotective and acting like I cannot make a decision on my own. How can I help them to understand that I want to give this guy a chance? – TL Dear TL, I am happy that you were able to heal from that painful break-up and feel brave enough to venture out in a new relationship. I hope you have learnt from your experience and whatever negative happened the last time by either you or him is not repeated. Be cautious with your heart and ensure that you use your head when making such an important decision. Weigh the pros and cons to figure out if this will be good for you. Try to understand your parent’s point of view; they watched you broken hearted, depressed and probably crying and filled with pain. Regardless of your age, parents who love genuinely will always be protective of you. They want to ensure that you are

The Big Party The BVI is home to many parties. The BVI is famous for its New Year’s Eve extravaganzas. We have full moon parties, an annual regatta with associated parties, an emancipation festival with various pageants and a carnival village with all kinds of shows and contests and a yearly music festival on the beach at Cane Garden Bay. There are many other events as well, and you are very unlucky if a week goes by without a major island bash of some kind. As of this writing we have just finished a weekend of very special partying celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – 60 years on the throne. The Royal BVI Yacht Club hosted a wonderful breakfast, of which I eagerly took part with wife Monique and son Jason. A good crowd enjoyed scrambled eggs and smoked salmon followed by strawberries and cream and accompanied by summer drinks; champagne and Pimm’s Cup. The highlight was the big screen showing of the pageant consisting of over 1000 vessels cruising down the Thames complete with the Royal Barge. The BVI weather was warm and sunny while the stalwart British spectators had to stand in the rain, but nothing would dampen their high spirits. Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh were obviously delighted by the whole occasion. It was all pomp and ceremony and how the Queen’s arm didn’t fall off after all that waving I shall never know. Some of the commentaries were entertaining while others were mundane and droll. A little history on St Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament would have been instructive. However, on a lighter note one BBC commentator interviewing a World War 2 veteran elicited peals of laughter when Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
he explained that when his ship had been torpedoed he was catapulted 60-feet in the air and then landed on a dead shark, belying the common belief of British understatement; most refreshing. In the BVI the party continued into the public holiday of June 4th with a police march and parade culminating at the QE2 park with presentations of medals and fine performances of diverse music genres; jazz, brass band and religious renditions. A beacon lighting ceremony took place as a grand finale at 9pm local time. Meanwhile in London a star studded concert wowed the crowds at Buckingham Palace with highlights provided by Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Shirley Bassey. Those invited were treated to sumptuous picnic baskets of Scottish salmon and strawberry dessert. Others watched the show on big screens set up in many of London’s parks. Now after all the hoopla it remains to be seen if there will be a platinum event in ten year’s time. If so I will be celebrating with even more enthusiasm. 6

Grown & Sexy Appreciation
Type of Toad at Le Grand Café
Don’t miss one of the biggest events of the summer, a Fans Appreciation party thrown by the Grown and Sexy Saturdays crew, this Saturday, 9th June at Club Diplomat from 10pm. The bash is to show gratitude to the crowd who have supported the club night the past two years and DJ Bertrum and DJ Wiz will be sure to make this a night to remember. The $20 cover charge before midnight will mean free drinks all night – so dress hot and get ready for a night to remember.
After their impressive gig at the Music Festival last month, a Type of Toad will be entertaining the patrons of the Grand Café for the first time since New Year’s Eve. Always fun, their performance will start at 10.30pm on Saturday 9th June – so hop to it as this is one party not to be missed.
Culture Vultures The long awaited event to present the Territorial Song and Dress finalists will be held on Sunday, June 10th at 3pm at the Auditorium at HLSCC. The finalists will battle it out with the unveiling of the final two designs in the Territorial Dress Competition – modeled by Miss BVI, Abigail Hyndman and Virgin Gorda’s Miss Teen Easter Festival, Tanieka Gludd. There are three songs competing for the Territorial Song and you can also expect selections by the Razor Blades, Lashing Dogs, the BVI Heritage Dances, the Junior Heritage Dancers and poetry by Foxy to complement the program. So come along and help promote the VI’s historic and cultural identity.
Fight Night Pacquiao and Bradley will be battling it out this Saturday at 9pm, so head to Capt Mulligan’s for all the boxing action.
London Bound Art Launch Celebrate some BVI art and culture by supporting the launch and opening ceremony of the artwork exhibition showcasing the talent of 14 local artists at 7pm, this Friday, June 8th at the West Atrium of the Central Administration Building. The collection includes sculpture, pottery, painting, batik and other artworks and will be on display until June 15th. This event will bring together the artists who hope to showcase their work at London’s BVI House Art Show and expose them to the UK art market. Broadway Takes Its Annual Bow At The Tony Awards On Broadway’s night to show the world the magic that happens within a few Manhattan blocks, Irish pub music, Gershwin standards and American classics dominate. Neil Patrick Harris hosts the 66th Annual Tony Awards Sunday, June 10, on CBS. Though details for the live show from Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre were not set at this writing, expect traditional Irish music from Once, with the most nominations, 11. And with 10 nods each, expect numbers from The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, starring Audra McDonald, and Nice Work If You Can Get It, starring Matthew Broderick, also with a Gershwin score. And if the audience is lucky, it will see a bunch of ragtag pirates dressed as mermaids in a number from Peter and the Starcatcher. This delightful play, with nine nominations, details Captain Hook and Peter Pan’s history. It would be an upset if Christian Borle (Tom on Smash), as an absolutely fabulous pirate prone to malapropisms, did not win. “I didn’t know the rule,” he says as to why he’s up for a featured rather than lead Tony. “You have to have your name over the title.” Borle’s in a category with Michael Cumpsty as the beleaguered accompanist to Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow; Tom Edden, playing an ancient waiter in One Man, Two Guvnors; Jeremy Shamos, playing two racists in Clybourne Park; and Andrew Garfield as Biff in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. Besides Borle, other familiar TV actors nominated include Judith Light (Who’s the Boss?), a dowdy,
alcoholic writer in Other Desert Cities, which garnered five nods. Giddy over her second straight nomination, Light says, “My friend Katie Finneran said to me, ‘You are still like an ingenue.’ I am the oldest ingenue on Broadway.” Earlier in the run of Other Desert Cities, Linda Lavin (“Alice”) had Light’s role, and she’s now up for a lead Tony for The Lyons, as a woman about to become a widow after 40 years in a loveless marriage. “It’s like that joy of being invited to the party, the work being validated,” Lavin says. Her worry for the Tonys? “Trying to get a designer to loan me a damned dress,” she says.

Hemingway & Gellhorn A two-for-one biopic, HBO's Hemingway & Gellhorn chronicles the time period during which Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn's lives intersected in a decadelong tumultuous love affair. Gellhorn was already a noted writer on her own, but her association and marriage to Hemingway, as well as the access he provided her to dangerous and compelling source material, elevated her work and public reputation greatly. Gellhorn pursued a journalism career after dropping out of college, working abroad in Paris and then covering the Great Depression in the U.S., during which time she became friends with future first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The film kicks off in 1936 with Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman) first meeting Hemingway (Clive Owen) in a bar in Key West, Florida. Right away, we see Gellhorn can hang with the boys, but that doesn't keep the boys from noticing her womanly charms. Hemingway moves the party back to his residence, and Mrs. Hemingway number two, Pauline Pfeiffer (Molly Parker), is none too happy to welcome Gellhorn into her home. The talk of the night is the impending Spanish Civil War and before long, they are in Spain, reporting on the war in their own unique ways. It is there that the affair begins. Amid the turmoil of war, Hemingway finally meets his match in Gellhorn - the woman who challenges him Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
unlike the others before. But at its best, their relationship is nothing more than tempestuous, and at its worst, the relationship and the two people in it are down-right violent. While very long, (over two and a half hours) the characters are engaging due to superb acting and the film utilizes unique techniques of changing from color to sepia or black and white to give the feeling of archival footage. Also viewers be warned that the film is at times graphic, earning the MA rating due to scenes of love and war - the true dichotomy of the lives of the titular characters, after all.
