This Week’s Feature Story

Dobet Gnahoré Set To Wow HLSCC Audience HLSCC kicks off the 17th season of its Performing Arts Series in style next week with the first performance of the season by Ivory Coast singer, dancer and percussionist Dobet Dobet Gnahoré Gnahoré. This talented performer will take to the stage on Friday, 21st October at 8:00pm in the College’s Auditorium where her voice, charisma and the pulsating African beat of her music will have local audiences mesmerized. She inherited her native “Bété” traditions and language from her father, a master percussionist. During 2003 and in collaboration with fellow musicians, she produced her first album entitled Ano Neko that in Bété means, “lets create together.” Her jazz like sound is enhanced with instruments such as the sanza, balafon, calebasse and bongos that support the guitar, back up vocals and Gnahoré’s own warm and powerful voice.

The forthcoming 2011/2012 series promises to be more exciting and diverse than ever with performances by Corky Chamber Blues that walk the line between Beethoven and B.B. King, blending gritty Chicago blues with rarefied classical chamber music. Also on the program is classical saxophonist, Ashu whose dynamic style captivates audiences and who has shown that the concert saxophone can reach a large diversity of people. His playing has even been described as “Riveting...Brilliant...Pizzazz to burn!” Jamaican reggae fusion singer-songwriter, Diana King will also bring her own special magic to the Reggae Showcase. After making an appearance on The Notorious B.I.G.'s 1994 song Respect, she went on to record her first single, Shy Guy that immediately became a top hit, reaching number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 before going on to sell nearly five million singles worldwide. Other performances this year will include the HLSCC Summer Concert featuring the College Ensembles and theatricals by the University of the Virgin Islands Theatre who will be treading the boards with Old Time Story, by Trevor Rhone. — Jan Critchley

Cupboard Love Buddy was a drifter who one night decided that he was tired of living on the street. He picked a house on the hill where he figured he would have it easy - one without dogs and just one other mild-mannered cat that looked plump and content. It was obvious that it was a home with a well-stocked cupboard. When I first saw Buddy, I lumped him in with the many other cats who sneak into the house and snatch a quick meal out of our cat’s chow bowl before slinking off into the night. Friendless and unfriendly they received no sympathy. Buddy was different. A bit like the wide-eyed and adorable kids on the Dave Thomas ads on PBS, who plea: “Adopt Me.” And you really want to, forgetting that some day they would grow up to become moody teenagers. Buddy wasn’t all that adorable. He had runny eyes, a gash on his leg and scraggly fur. My first thought when I saw him was: “This cat needs a good meal.” My second was: “if we feed him, he’ll be ours.” So we fed him and he moved in. But as it turned out it was a good deal. A couple of expensive trips to the vet later and he was fit as a fiddle. His hair grew in and his wounds healed. White, with red markings, his head is too big for his sturdy body and his legs are on the short side, but against all odds, he has become cute.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late edu-cator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Buddy

I once was told that life begins when the kids have graduated college and the dog dies. My kids are now adults and out of the house, and I had already vowed not to get a dog. So I was not ready to take on a new responsibility. But I now have Buddy who seems eternally grateful for his new home. Roger, the other cat who was raised in the lap of luxury, takes his privileged life for granted. In contrary cat fashion he can take us or leave us, and would gladly show Buddy the road. Buddy on the other hand seems to bless every day that he has in our home. With dog-like loyalty, he never leaves our feet and believes getting tripped over is just another sign of our love. As it turns out, adoption has never been so easy.

‘Good’ Times Continue For Bell In Her Fourth Witch’s Tale the course of several movies, but she believes consistency among the cast and crew has been key. “We’ve had the same director for all of them (Craig Pryce), and that’s helped. He knows when to throw in the right tone at the right moments.” And for her purposes, Bell also has had past screen witches to look to. She notes, “I grew up with Bewitched, and I loved the playfulness that she (Elizabeth Montgomery) brought to that character. There’s definitely an element of that in this. You actually could call this kind of a fun, modern take on that.” Bell certainly knows about long series runs, having had one with JAG on CBS and now enjoying another with Army Wives, which is about to begin production on its sixth season. She’s in a position any weekly-TV-minded performer would love: Army Wives could get another renewal, plus Bell has just finished making TNT’s upcoming adaptation of the April Smith novel Good Morning, Killer, and a possible series for her FBI agent character in that production reportedly is under consideration. And then there’s “The Good Witch,” which would seem a likely candidate for weekly consideration after what will amount to at least five movies. “There’s always been talk about that,” Bell confirms, “and I always get asked about it. It certainly would be cute. I like the character and the people I work with, so I would have no problem with that.” Marveling at the bountiful career options that appear to be in front of her now, wife and mother of two Bell reflects, “I remember being a starving actress, going on auditions and keeping my fingers crossed that I’d still be able to pay the rent. It’s certainly an interesting journey that life can take you on. It’s been really, really fun.”

It’s no stretch to say Catherine Bell has cast a spell over viewers. The co-star of Lifetime’s Army Wives has found another ongoing success in her recurring series of Good Witch TV movies for Hallmark Channel. She recently signed for a fifth film, but before that begins production, the fourth Catherine Bell one - the comedy-fantasy The Good Witch’s Family - makes its debut Saturday, Oct. 29, appropriately just before Halloween. “It’s really incredible,” the friendly Bell says of now reaching her fourth Good Witch round, with at least one more definite. “People ask me all the time, ‘When’s the next one coming out?’ It’s really struck a note with a lot of people ... men and women, adults and kids. It’s very rare that kind of appeal happens, so I like it.” Despite the Good Witch moniker, the new story and its forerunners never have confirmed that Cassie actually is a sorceress. That’s one of the elements Bell enjoys most, since she reasons, “What she has could just really be great intuition. She understands people well and has good senses, and I certainly know people in life who are like that. You just never quite know, and that’s the mystery of it.” After last season’s Army Wives episodes that saw the death of her alter ego Denise Sherwood’s son in combat, Bell welcomed a return to the much more fanciful Good Witch spirit. It can be tricky to maintain that over 5

American Masters’ Profiles Rock Survivors In VH1’s Behind the Music biography series, very often, at around the 40-minute mark, tragedy befalls the band or the singer, usually involving narcotics, alcohol or jail - or all of the above. But in Pearl Jam 20: American Masters, airing Friday, Oct. 21, on PBS - as part of the first PBS Arts Fall Festival (check local listings) - the two-hour documentary from director and music journalist Cameron Crowe essentially gets to the 40-minute mark and then just stays there, since all the founding members of Pearl Jam continue alive and free. “But still, that was the challenge, to do a movie about a band that wasn’t that, and did survive. That’s why there are leaps we had to take, years where literally they’re just surviving and playing concerts. So that became part of the story,” says Crowe. And in this story, the tragedy happens before Pearl Jam is even formed. Members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were also in another Seattle band in the ’80s, called Mother Love Bone, with charismatic frontman Andrew Wood. Sadly, at 24, Wood died following a heroin overdose. As to whether the film is, in a way, Wood’s story, Crowe says, “It is kind of that. When we started, that was one of the things that I really thought about. His story needed to be told, and from that, I thought the whole Pearl Jam tale should come, as it did in life.” Toward the end of the movie, there is even footage of Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder performing one of Wood’s songs. “I did an interview with them early on,” says Crowe,

“where Eddie wouldn’t tell me what song it was that he would sing, at some point, of Wood’s. So when I heard that he played ‘Crown of Thorns’ at the concert, I said, ‘Fantastic, I’ve got to get a recording.’ ” Strangely enough, it’s that lack of a “Behind the Music” tragedy that attracted Crowe to doing a Pearl Jam documentary. “If we had the movie where somebody does die at the 40-minute mark,” he says, “we wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t have done it; you wouldn’t be talking to me. Just another one of those films ... . “I always get the feeling that, if civilization disappears for a while, and all this stuff that exists now goes into a time capsule, somebody comes along later, goes, ‘Oh, rock music, it was made by people that die young. ” “Anybody who’s got a shot,” says Crowe, “is so inundated with all the things they have to do to try to transcend the fact that there’s no radio, and there’s no culture, rock culture, that’s the same. So they’re forced to do all this mainstream stuff, if they can even get in on it. “So they have to enter in the mainstream with their tin cups out for all kinds of love and appreciation immediately. It gives no one a chance to find them, and there’s no culture to sustain them, which is a drag.” 17

Taking Nothing For Granted Despite an excellent reason, Stephen Beard was extremely upset that he missed two races when he showed up for the last College Classic Series race. In fact, he should not have even been there. A broken foot had kept him out of a 10K race and the first 2 mile race. Determined to compete, he ripped off the cast on his foot 3 weeks early when he felt his progress wasn’t fast enough. “Of course I was upset. Once you start a training routine you have to finish it,” he pointed out. “Once you get addicted to it, there’s no easy way to stop.” I’d been seeing Beard hobbling around the track getting his exercise in when he asked me about the 5K races and how much he wanted to compete in one. He was never an athlete, much less a competitor. His motivation came after suffering a massive stroke, followed by a major car accident where he had a fractured skull. He was told he’d never walk or run again. “The fact that I’d been told that, I decided early on that I have to be able to walk again and my dream became the 10K, because it’s a distance that anyone can do, and I had to prove that I could be just as normal as anyone else or better,” he explained. “So that was my motivation and I did it,” he said of competing in the Beef Island 10K in August. Beard said he likes the Beef Island course because speed bumps and sidewalks gives him trouble, because he doesn’t have good balance as yet. “I never did any of this before, except for a little swimming,” he said of his exercise passion. “When you’re young, you feel like you’re indestructible and I thought I was until that day. Then I realized that I wasn’t indestructible and here we are. I have trained really hard

Stephen Beard finishes the Beef Island 10K

to come back to where I am now, and I expect to train to be better than average. We’ll see…as long as nothing bad happens again.” During the last College race, he was 37th of 56 male participants, covering the course in 21 minutes and 51 seconds. “A lot of people were surprised when I passed them,” he noted. “But the 2 mile has now become a thing of the past. I do 2 miles for fun.” He recalled his first 5K that left him extremely tired. But when he went home things changed. “My walking became better. My running became better, everything became better after that particular race,” he remembers. “It gave me hope not to give up. I had been exercising for six months without any improvement in my stride, how I planted my feet and I had no muscle control. And after that race, a lot of things came back. I decided that after 10K there might be another round of improvement and worked even harder. And after the 10K, I wasn’t even tired. Now the improvement is over it’s getting the maximum of my capabilities.” 19
