This Week’s Feature Story

It’s a Dog’s Life It’s time to get the grooming kit out to ensure your dog is looking good and on its best behavior for the 36th annual BVI Humane Society’s Dog Show. This entertaining fun family day out, with lots of laughs is held on Saturday, 23rd June at Capt. Mulligan’s with registration starting at 10:30am. The main thing about this show is that it is for all dogs – whether they are pedigree, mixed breeds, island, longhaired, shorthaired, sporting or working dogs. In fact, every type, shape and size of hound is encouraged to take part. The event is about showing our love of dogs and the many different types represented here in the BVI. Just as importantly, it’s about coming together and supporting the BVI Humane Society and the incredible work that they do. There are fourteen judging categories in the show and therefore there has to be one for your favorite canine. They include Best in Show, Best Island Dog, Best Puppy in Show, Best Sporting Dog, Best Working Dog, Best Toy Dog, and the not to be missed, Best Dressed Dog! Other fun events include Most Agile Dog and Dog Obedience Demonstrations. With this in mind, Carlos Abreau, the dog trainer from

Puerto Rico is here all this week to give lessons at the Animal Shelter in case your pet could benefit from some last minute tuition. Last year, there was a good mix of dogs amongst the winners. Vito, a Bullmastiff won Best in Show and the Runner-Up was a mixed breed called Hansel, so there is a fair chance for any of our four legged friends to be winners this year. Judging starts at 12 noon and the winner of each of the categories will receive a trophy. Other highlights of the show include tasty food and drinks, book, plant and cake stalls plus a raffle, tombola and bouncy castle. So, head out to Capt. Mulligan’s this Saturday and enjoy this fun celebration of “man’s best friend!” For more information please call 494-2284. – Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Summer Vacation Without Kids Dear Koren, Summer vacation is coming up and my husband and I always take a vacation together and leave our 12 and 16 year old children with their aunt, uncle and cousins. Now this year, he is saying he wants to bring them. I mostly take care of them all year round so I need a break and it will be more expensive. We have been having some problems too, so this would be a good time for us to talk about our marriage. How do I change his mind and get him to agree with what we always do? – SW

their parents. I don’t see any indication that you are considering their feelings, mostly just your own. Have you asked your husband why he wants to bring them along? It could be as a buffer between you and him or it could be very well that he thinks they are at an age where they could learn a lot from traveling and having some fun too. Before a decision can be made, you have to hear his reasons and see if they are valid. Be a little more open-minded and less self-centered. A vacation is to relax and have fun and having arguments might not be the best use of your time. Listen to his reasons, consider what is best for the children and find a way to deal with your marital problems in a way that is agreeable to you and your husband.

Dear SW, Maybe the very reason you want to be alone with him, is the very reason he does not want to be alone with you. Maybe he does not want to be on vacation talking about what is going wrong in the marriage and how to fix it. The expense of taking the kids on the vacation should be a shared expense, so I do not see that it should impact on you alone if you both have an income. Also, he could be assigned the responsibility of taking care of their needs, thus giving you that well needed break. How do you think the children feel being left behind year after year, while their parents hop on a plane to go off and have a good time? It is their vacation time too and maybe they would rather be with

Never Miss The Water A few days ago while doing some work in the yard I spilled a bit of water, which formed a small pool on the ground. Within minutes it had almost dried up in the searing heat of the morning sun, but what really caught my attention was the small bevy of bees that had already gathered around, trying to suck up whatever moisture they could before it was completely gone. I began noticing them more frequently around every bit of water and damp ground in the next few days, and only then did it hit home to me just how dry conditions have been in the BVI for the past few weeks. It would be very difficult for anyone to have overlooked the lack of rainfall and intensely hot conditions that we’ve been experiencing recently. This is nothing new, of course, but yet whenever this time of year comes around, we can’t help but notice. It’s not so much the temperatures, which are not unusually high, but more the hazy conditions caused by the Saharan dust and the lack of wind that make things so uncomfortable for most of us. But before we start complaining too much about the heat and lack of rainfall, spare a thought for the not so fortunate creatures – both great and small. While many of them may be able to seek out some source of water, many others do not and may even die of thirst or lose their lives trying to find water.

Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Water is one of the most essential elements for life, and while we take it for granted given our fairly efficient water supply system and the abundance of beautiful, turquoise seawater around us, finding potable water can be extremely difficult for many animals in such times. So as we go about our daily lives we should pause for a moment and think about the creatures, many of which are very important to us. I have started leaving a small container of water in the backyard, which the birds and the bees have been really appreciating. After all, the birds provide me with their cheerful chirping every morning while the bees work wonders on the flower garden and fruit trees. It’s the least I can do in return. One useful tip though, place sticks in any container of water you provide to stop the bees from drowning.

‘Twenty Twelve’ Paints London Games As a Five-Ring Circus The United Kingdom recently took a big wallow in pomp and pageantry for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, but there’s something mischievous in the British national character that loves nothing more than puncturing targets that have gotten a little full of themselves. That probably explains Twenty Twelve, the gleeful new BBC America sitcom premiering Thursday, June 28, that casts Hugh Bonneville Downton Abbey as Ian Fletcher, the hapless manager entrusted with coordinating the run-up to the Olympic Summer Games. Left to his own devices, Ian probably would be a charismatic, competent boss, but this current gig forces him to deal constantly with idiots such as “Director of Branding” Siobhan Sharp (Jessica Hynes, Spaced), who babbles endlessly in PR-speak, and Graham Hitchens (Karl Theobald), who is in charge of coordinating logistics yet incapable of understanding why Ian has qualms about his plan to route all Olympic flights through the airspace above U.K nuclear reactors. Filmed mockumentary style like The Office, Twenty Twelve follows Ian and his incompetent staff as they confront increasingly difficult hurdles as the official Olympic clock counts down to the Games — or, rather, counts up, since Siobhan inadvertently has had the thing programmed to count in the wrong direction. Bonneville, known to zillions worldwide as Robert, Earl of Grantham, in Downton Abbey, clearly is having a grand romp in this contemporary comedy, and he is confident it will resonant with most viewers.

“While (the show) is lampooning the possible pitfalls of organizing something like the Olympics, it’s really about management,” the actor explains. “Anyone who has sat on a school fundraiser or a church hall committee will recognize the dynamics in those groups of people who say they are going to do something by Friday but clearly aren’t, and how you can actually try and engineer a team to make something with a deadline involved. When you magnify that to the scale of the Olympics, those problems become massive, and the potential disasters are just around the corner. So it’s about how we, particularly in Britain, are able to mismanage ourself into a corner.” The series films its office scenes in the same building where the actual Olympic organizing group does its work, so Bonneville and his colleagues often share elevators with their real-life counterparts. “A couple of them we’ve talked to have said they enjoy our show, but it cuts painfully close to the bone,” Bonneville says, laughing. “I ran into one guy the other day who said to me, ‘I just want to tell you how much we enjoy your show, even though we have to watch it through our fingers.”’ While Brits take the brunt of the show’s satiric slings and arrows, the show finds time to aim a few at one of England’s former colonies later in the series, Bonneville reveals. “One of the final episodes concentrates on Americans coming over from the White House to make sure they are happy with the security arrangements, because the Americans ... want to have a special dedicated road lane to make sure that all the American officials can get to the Games,” he says. “And if you know London, our streets are not exactly freeways.” 13

Marley the music moves the story along, particularly since this documentary lacks a voice-over narrator. One part I found particularly interesting is the story of the evolution of musical styles, how American popular music birthed ska, which then transformed into reggae. Within the film, there are dueling theories as to whether the distinctive rhythm of reggae was deliberate guitar strum or a happy accident caused by a tape delay machine. Truly, it’s one of the most informative movies I have seen in a while and I enjoyed it immensely. Certainly you will take away something new about this man everyone encounters so often in island life.

Whether you've grown up with his music or are a recent convert, Bob Marley is an inescapable figure in the BVI, but everyone can learn something about the legendary musician from the recent documentary simply titled Marley. For years, director Kevin Macdonald, The Last King of Scotland meticulously researched Bob Marley's life, with this end result being hailed as the definitive life story of the man who has, and continues to touch so many people. Even with son Ziggy Marley as executive producer, critics have praised Marley for being evenhanded, delving into some of the unsavory details of Bob's life. The lengthy (over two hours long) film goes back to the beginning, to Bob's birth to a teenage mother and a much older British father. The editing of the film is superb - combing modern interviews with Bob's mother, family, children and bandmates along with recorded interviews from decades ago, scenes of Jamaica today and photos of the places that Bob called home into a seamless story. Then of course, there's the music. From his first recording, Judge Not to his last concert performance, Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Second All America Honors For Anderson school at the Coed Championships in program history and only the fifth time they have qualified for the event, with their best finish being fourth place. The team won the Oxford University Trophy for its second place finish. In their quest for overall team racing, the Hawks finished fifth, one spot out of the final four, as they were seeking to repeat last year’s feat, where they won the title for the first time. At the conclusion of the ICSA National Championships Anderson along with three of his teammates, were selected as Coed All Americans. He was also one of four finalist for the Everett B. Morris Trophy, which is awarded annually to the Collegiate Sailor of the Year for outstanding performance at the highest level of sailing during the collegiate year. While the London Olympic Games hopeful has passed on this year’s event to focus on Rio 2016 as he was not able to make the requisite weight for the Laser Class, Anderson will be taking a wealth of experience into his senior year and future endeavors. After his stint at Roger Williams University, the Cedar International School graduate plans to take his skills to another level to be ready for Rio. With BVI sailing not being represented at the Olympic Games since 1996, Anderson will be on a quest to ensure it returns. He’ll compete in several regional and international championships and games along the way to Rio, starting with the 2014 CAC Games in Veracruz, Mexico. His dedication to the sport is unparalleled and he must be congratulated for his collegiate accomplishments. Back to back All America Honors is no mean feat and he could become the territory’s first 3-peater in 2013. Go Alec!

Before he and his buddies from Bermuda and the U.S. Virgin Islands arrived at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, the Hawks had never smelt anything close to being at the top of Alec Anderson collegiate sailing. But for the second year in a row, the BVI’s Alec Anderson, now a junior, has earned All America Honors and been nominated for College Sailor of the Year, after teaming up to lead RWU to the runners up spot. In their lead up to the top of Collegiate sailing, Anderson was part of the team that was second in the New England Dinghy Championships and began piling up awards along the way as the season progressed. At the end of April, the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) awards committee, announced its 2012 All-NEISA Coed Team, with Anderson earning All NEISA first team skipper honors. A week later he was nominated for University Athlete of the year for sailing, after collecting several Athlete of the Week laurels. Then on May 13, the Hawks placed second in the ICSA National Championships Eastern semifinals, earning one of the coveted 18 spots to the Gill/ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championships held earlier this month in Austin, Texas. At those National Championships the Hawks were runners up, marking the best finish for the 17
