This Week’s Feature Story
Mango Magic If you enjoy the succulent fruits that are lucky enough to have been blessed by our tropical sunshine, then make sure you get along to the third annual Mango Array and Tropical Fruit Festival this Friday, 13th July at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Park. This family festival has many fun activities for everyone and children in particular will enjoy the quizzes, face painting, bobbing for mangoes, arts and crafts and much more. Speaking about the festival, Deputy Chief Agricultural Officer and Event Co-ordinator, Mrs. Arona Fahie-Forbes said, “The festival will provide the opportunity for various cultivar growers of mango and tropical fruits to share their varieties with the community.” She also explained that the event will create a venue for crop producers and business owners alike to showcase their produce, arts and crafts, food and merchandise made from any part of the mango fruit tree or any other tropical fruit. Mrs Fahie-Forbes continued to talk about the fact that mangoes
and other tropical fruits are more than just great eating, that they are key cultural tools in the Virgin Islands that promote a sense of community identity and belonging. They also have unusual names, for example, some of the local varieties expected to be on display include the Julie, Boar-Hog, Tina, Rocky, Bulltone, Touch-me-not, Hardskin, Cottage, Kidney and Cutlass! Now, the names Kidney and Cutlass I can understand due to the similar shapes involved, as for the others, I’ll have to get down to the festival and find out! As well as activities and displays, there will be a mango eating competition that could get very messy as well as lessons on fruit tree production and propagation including budding and grafting. The festival is also open to vendors who can sell fruit trees, ornaments, arts and crafts, food and fresh produce. So, bring all the family and come prepared to have lots of fun and eat plenty of mangoes and other tropical fruit. Better bring a change of clothes too, just in case!! – Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Frustrated Over Wayward Son
Ask Koren
Dear Koren I have a son who is nearly forty and I am very upset at the way he treats girls. He is like his father having children all over the place and it has come to the point where now I chase the girls away when they come to my house to complain, because if they know he is like that, why do they still go with him? Please give us mothers some advice on how to deal with these types of children. I know other mothers have the very same problem. –Frustrated Mother
he has a problem which he feels he cannot control, have him speak with a counselor or trusted friend who could help him. Do not chase the girls away when they come to cry or complain. Use the opportunity to encourage them to develop some self worth and demand better. If they cannot be treated respectfully, then they have the option of walking away. Don’t tell them what to do, but give them options. Young women need wiser older women to offer advice and support. You have a lot to teach and share and because you yourself have been through so much, you understand what they are going through. Try not to let the frustration affect you too much so as to cause undue stress. Do your part and leave the rest.
Dear Frustrated Mother, I can hear your frustration and it is good that you are speaking on behalf of the other mothers and you are speaking up for women everywhere who have to deal with men in multiple relationships. Your disappointment in your son is appropriate and if he has sisters or daughters you need to tell him that he would not want them to be treated like that. He is an adult and you are not responsible for him anymore, but as a mother, you are always a parent. If he continues like that, the consequences could be him hurting a lot of women, picking up HIV or some other infection or becoming the victim of a crime if one of those women got really upset. If he does not listen to you, get someone else to talk to him. I hope it does not become an ongoing cycle with his son or sons becoming the same way. If

The Challenges of a Home Office Then there’s that bi-monthly paycheck that fluctuates like the NY stock exchange with no guarantee that your living expenses will be met or can be budgeted in a reasonable way, so faith and prayer play a big role here. Access to the Internet is vital, so those all-too-frequent power outages that a bigger company would have covered with a generator, you instead must get creative with. And for the self-employed benefits: medical, pensions, etc? As a New Yorker might say – “Fahhh –get about it!” One also forgets in the work place how much interaction and socialization goes on. In a best case scenario, it is a forum for ideas, exchange and wonderful teamwork can occur. However human nature being what it is, it can also sadly be a place of divisiveness with gossip and backbiting. The adage that “no man is an island” (even on an island) is true and whether working out of your home or in the public sphere, our basic goal is the same – communication. The more we can accomplish our goals and visions with integrity and show care and compassion for those we interact with, our office location is really irelevant.
There is a growing number of BVIslanders and residents alike, who have found whether through selfemployment or a flexible work environment, that the home office is their primary workspace. Of course every work environment poses its own unique challenges, so this is not an article championing one above the other. However, as one who was a 9 to 5’er for a number of years and now works out of my home office as a freelance writer, I have a particular appreciation for what my home atmosphere offers…and what it does not. On the plus side – no commute! With increasing Road Town traffic congestion and the escalating cost of gas, this saves me both time and money. Oh yes, and a fashionable work wardrobe is not a necessity, unless I think impressing my cat and dog is important. I am still a 9 to 5’er most of the time, but there is great flexibility here. Need to see the doctor or take a sick day, no request slip needed. Want to take more than two weeks a year of vacation/travel time, no problem. Want to sit in the sun and read a book, or listen to your favorite live-stream radio broadcast on your “lunch hour,” no one’s looking over your shoulder. However, the grass is not always greener on this side of the fence. The three D’s (discipline, direction and determination) are vital for work production and these must be internally motivated. So the “inner boss” is constantly cracking the whip.

Your Guide to British Virgin Islands Events
Prince and Princess Pageant You always know that festival is just around the corner when the Prince and Princess Pageant is on the calendar! Eight young couples will take to the stage at this key pre-festival event which takes place on Sunday, 15th July at 3:00pm at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall. The theme this year is “A Golden Story To Tell Enjoying Festival 2012.” This year’s categories are Introduction, Futuristic Wear, Cultural Wear, Talent and Evening Wear. Both the Futuristic Wear and Cultural Wear segments are new to the show and couples will be judged on their clothes color and co-ordination, appropriateness, poise and modeling technique. The introduction of each couple will take place after the opening dance. This provides each couple the opportunity to wow the judges by their clarity and diction, facial and body expressions, poise and mention of the festival’s theme or slogan. Alvera Maduro-Caines who has been the Chairperson of the Pageant for the past ten years said, “The show is designed to help build the participants’ self esteem, showcase their talents and bring out the boldness that is sometimes hidden behind shyness.” The winning couple will receive a laptop computer and $500 cash each, and all competitors will receive trophies and be able to keep their crowns as a memento. Tickets are on sale at J&C Department Store and Impressions Boutique and cost $15 for
adults and $5.00 for children. The show starts at 3.00pm sharp, don't miss it!

There will be a Moorings Catamaran open to all who want to watch the sailing up close and shore side events starting at 3:00pm on Saturday including a frozen t-shirt competition, tug of war and much more. More Murder, Mayhem In Store In ‘Breaking Bad’ Season 5 Chemistry teacher-turned-meth dealer Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is sitting on top of the world as Breaking Bad launches its fifth season Sunday, July 15, on AMC. At the end of last season, Walt pulled off a complicated and audacious plan that killed off his terrifying nemesis Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) while re-establishing Walt’s alliance with Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), his drug colleague and partner in crime. As Walt told his wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), with chilling simplicity: “I won.” But don’t expect Walt to turn away from his journey to the dark side. For one thing, a panicky Skyler gave away most of his ill-gotten loot to her former boss, whose tax woes were about to draw an unwelcome light onto her and Walt’s personal finances. After all, Walt always has rationalized that he does what he does because he loves his family and wants to provide for them. But as longtime Breaking Bad fans know, there’s something else as well, the naked ego and voracious pride this former milquetoast has found now that he has unleashed his deadly alter ego, whom he calls “Heisenberg.” “Now he has defeated the greatest opponent he ever has faced, like Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, the guy who was considered to be the best,” says Cranston, who has won three Emmy Awards for his work on the show. “And now, in this fifth season, Walt is finally owning it. He’s not leasing his emotions anymore. He feels like he is the king. He is spreading his confidence and intimidation: ‘This is what’s going to happen, and I’ll tell you why and when. I’m running the show now. I’m better than Gus Fring. If you were
afraid of Gus Fring, or if you admired him, you haven’t seen anything yet, because I’m the guy who killed him.’ ” AMC has given series creator and executive producer Vince Gilligan 16 more episodes in which to wrap up the saga of Walter White, eight of them airing this summer, followed by the final eight shows in summer 2013.

Big Miracle I have a soft spot for movies that are “inspired by true events” and have a heartwarming ending. Big Miracle, which takes place in Barrow, the northern most town in Alaska, stars Drew Barrymore as Rachel, a zealous Greenpeace activist and John Krasinski as Adam, an ambitious Alaska reporter who falls into the story of a lifetime while on assignment. In 1988, three gray whales – mother, father and a baby dubbed Bam Bam – are trapped in the ice just outside of Barrow. Only one small section of unfrozen ice allows the whales to rise to the surface to breathe. But, this too, will freeze over shortly, trapping them beneath ice that stretches five miles to the open sea. Only by opening a path to the ocean through the ice can the whales survive, a daunting task under the best of conditions, but near impossible in temperatures that can plummet to 70 degrees below zero. Adam and Rachel, who had been romantically involved, put aside their differences to develop a strategy to save the whales. They bring together, through both chance and design, a disparate group of rescuers that includes an oilman (Ted Danson) looking to drill in the Arctic Refuge; the Inupiat Eskimos who hunt the whales as part of their cultural tradition; the Alaska National Guard; the inventors of an experimental de-icer, and press from dozens of TV stations from around the world. Even President Ronald Reagan and Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev put aside their Cold War differences to weigh in on the side of the whales. At first, self-interest was the prime motivation for many of the rescuers – there is nothing like good PR Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Soon, though, everyone gets swept up in the cause in spite the daunting odds. Among the most endearing of these characters is an Inupiat elder who teaches his cheeky teenage grandson the importance of his people’s traditions and values. With Bam Bam now sick and the situation increasingly hopeless, the different parties race against the clock to rescue the trapped animals. But even with the weather relentlessly closing in, the rescuers refuse to give up. Big Miracle is indeed a heartwarming story of people who come together to perform a good deed because it’s the right thing to do.

Racing In The Premier’s Cup Defending champions Anguilla, will be among eight teenaged teams competing in this weekend Premier’s Cup Youth Regatta. They will be joined by newcomers Bahamas and Cayman Islands — who make their return after visiting 10 years ago — as well as Puerto Rico, Trinidad, USA and two BVI teams. Event coordinator Chris Ghiorse said the kids are going to have a lot of fun because they will get lots of racing in over the weekend. “I’m hoping our kids gain valuable experience in meeting other kids from other islands and learn about youth competition and what it entails,” Ghiorse said. “The kids that we have participating have never really competed in an event like this before, until last weekend when we got them to do the Firecracker race out of Nanny Cay. They did quite well, finishing eighth out of 26 boats, so I was pleasantly surprised by their performance.” Following that performance, Ghiorse said it will be interesting to see as the Premier’s Cup is about fellowship between the islands. He said the teams coming from as far away as the Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Trinidad and Tobago, might be a little more focused on racing as a lifestyle. “I hope our teams will raise their game even more, since I was happy to see how they did in the Firecracker race—an event that required staying focused for a longer event—while the Premier’s Cup is a series of short races,” he noted. “Each team gets to do 12 races. Having kids working together as a

team, they are going to discuss among themselves how they can improve from the last race, so that is the whole idea behind doing the short races.” Ghiorse said he expected to have more teams in competition but with the Optimist World Championships being held in the Dominican Republic and another major event in Ireland, most of the top sailors were scheduled for those events. “It’s not every week you have that caliber of competition showing up in your backyard,” he said referring to the Optimist Championships. “It’s the same 12-18 age group we target, so many countries were sending their competitive sailors there. But we ought to have a great event nonetheless.” Events will kick off in Nanny Cay on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. with the Premier’s welcome and reception, where each team will be introduced. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. 17
