YOUR FREE GUIDE To our Islands’ Happenings

Calypso Competition Saturday, July 28 ALSO THIS WEEK: Kiddies Fiesta • U.P’s Roller Skating Rink Opening • 2012 Olympics Opening

This Week’s Feature Story

Festival Fiesta for the Kids Director and Kiddies Fiesta PR Committee Chair said, “The Kiddies Fiesta promises to be good uplifting fun again this year. The parade will be colorful and entertaining as usual, and there will be lots of games and entertainment.” She added, “All proceeds of the Fiesta will go to support Youth and Health related programs and charities. These areas are a continual focus for The Rotary Club of Road Town as we believe they are key to creating and sustaining peaceful, happy communities. This year's Rotary International theme of ‘Peace through Service’ reflects the organization's ongoing commitment to humanitarian actions on every scale and we believe that providing a safe, fun outlet for the children to fully participate in Festival activities is entirely in keeping with that mission.” This year, the Rotary Club of Road Town is hoping to donate another much needed dialysis machine to Peebles Hospital. So, do something special for the kids this festival weekend, help a good cause and join in the fun and make this Kiddies Fiesta an event to remember.

One of the highlights of festival, and a special treat for the kids is the 19th annual Kiddies Fiesta, Parade and Fun Day! Organized by the Rotary Club of Road Town, the fiesta starts at 10am on Saturday, 28th July at Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park. All of your children’s favorite costumed characters will be there including Dora, Elmo, Barney and Sponge Bob plus music from Showtime Band, DJ Push Pop and other entertainers to keep the party lively. There will also be a Kiddies Parade that is slated to start at 10:30am, and the organizers are excited this year as many more children are expected to take part than in previous years. There will be lots of games and activities to enjoy including bouncy castles, face-painting, dance performances, water games and much more. However, this is not just an event for the kids it is for the entire family ¬– and adults are encouraged to get involved in some of the fun activities as well! Local food and drink will also be in plentiful supply! Lavina Liburd, Membership

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Modeling Over A Real Career Dear Koren, I am scratching my head with frustration. My 18 year old daughter got a summer modeling job and I was proud of her. Now she is talking about not wanting to go to college to study Communications anymore because the guy she works with is telling her she can get constant gigs. Just the fact that she is using the word “gigs” to describe work is really turning me off. Should I forbid her from modeling again or go to the guy who hired her and ask him to let her go? I want her to follow her dream of being a professional newscaster. –Mother

chances of success are limited the older you get and there might not be a lot of opportunity for her to use her brain as much as she will be using her body. Teenagers go through phases and make changes very easily based on what they deem to be popular and what will elevate their status in the eyes of their peers. Think of the reasons why she wanted to be a newscaster before and appeal to those dreams. It cannot be just about what you want or what you think is suitable, but rather helping her to take a more long term approach to her decisions. Whatever decision she comes to, do not allow a difference in perspective to affect your mother-daughter relationship, because she will need your support in whatever field of work she chooses.

Dear Mother, I get the impression you and your daughter are close and you are regretting your decision to let her model. This is something you and her have to work on together, but approaching the employer is inappropriate because she is legally an adult and he does not seem to be taking advantage of her. It sounds like your daughter likes professions that puts her in the limelight, and with modeling, she is still in front of the camera. Talk with her about her dreams and help her to figure out if she can do both. It is important that she understands not only the benefits, but also the downsides of modeling. Explain to her that while modeling seems glamorous and exciting now, it can be a dog-eat-dog environment,

Feathered Friends The BVI is for the birds! Our feathered friends have recently been highlighted in a photo contest in a local newspaper and this undoubtedly drew attention to many rarely seen species. I often carry a camera on my many jaunts around the islands and birds certainly make for interesting and unusual pictures. Once a booby, complete with freshly caught a fish in its beak, landed on the bow pulpit of a yacht I was helming. I captured a half dozen shots of it as it went through the process of first crushing the fish, aligning it for swallowing and then seeing it slide down the gullet, all while balancing on the pitching bow. A few seconds later it flew off with a gratified expression. Seabirds, of course, are all around us in our island environment. Frigate birds wheel high above the ocean looking for unwary fish swimming too close to the surface. Laughing gulls seem just as happy scrounging for scraps from yachts as they do searching for minnows or other minute marine life. They’re certainly prettier than their larger northern cousins. I once had the unfortunate experience of losing a filet mignon from an on-board barbecue by a tenacious and seemingly heat resistant gull. He must

Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

have been the hero of the day when all his friends swooped down to devour the huge hunk of protein as it fell into the water. I, on the other hand, looked unhappily at my rather barren plate with only baked potato and vegetables! Pelicans, those pre-historic looking birds, always provide a great photo opportunity with their many and varied aspects. A pelican never dives for a specific fish as many people suppose, but rather dives into a school of minnows hoping that out of the melee one or several will swim into its pouch. You can always tell if a bird has had success; after draining out the water from its pouch it will give a satisfied waggle of its tail before launching off for another try. I have watched a pelican taking off while snorkeling (me, not the bird); a fascinating sight, its webbed feet churning like bees’ wings before the bulky creature becomes airborne. The pelican is probably our most famous indigenous bird, even to the extent of having his own limerick. But whether he will win the photo contest remains to be seen. “A wonderful bird is the pelican. Its beak can hold more than its belly can; He flies and he soars; Dives and he scores; I don’t know how the hell he can.”

Your Guide to British Virgin Islands Events Olympics, this Friday from 3pm and support our delegation of two – flag bearer Tahesia Harrigan-Scott and J’Maal Alexander. RBVIYC will be showing it on their big screen with Pimms and bangers and mash to set the scene and see whether London can put on a better show than Beijing four years ago – it will be a hard act to follow!

Festival Off To A Flying Start

Guy Eldridge Memorial Race It’s that time again for the Royals (RBVIYC) and Loyals (WEYC) to battle it out for the Manhattan Yacht Club Trophy. The race will start off Nanny Cay at 12 noon on Saturday, 28th July and finish in Great Harbour, Peter Island. The top three yachts will then nominate crew to compete for the trophy, which involves relays in dinghies. Drinks, lunch, dancing and general shenanigans will follow at Oceans 7. A pirate phrase or two always helps to decide the winner, such as, “C’,mon, lad, shiver me timbers!” Last year the Loyals failed to bring home the loot, but this year they are determined to get the trophy back! Registration is at Nanny Cay between 10:30am and 11:30am on the day of the race. Call Andrew Waters 494-4868 for more details.

Festival has started! So it’s time to relax and enjoy the vast variety of music and entertainment on offer over the next couple of weeks. Kicking off the celebrations at the Festival Ground is the Gospel Fest, at 7:30pm on Thursday, 26th July followed by Showtime Band and Spectrum Band on Friday. Other highlights include the Calypso Competition, which starts at 9pm on Saturday night, where 18 Calypsonians will be vying for this year’s Calypso Monarch title and the crown! On Sunday, enjoy the Steel Band Fest and Monday’s entertainment includes a local DJ and Xtreme Band. Tuesday is Youth Night with VI Band and Jammers HP and Culture Night on Wednesday will feature troupe performances and your favorite fungi band Razor Blades. So get down to the festival village, grab some great food and your friends and have fun, fun fun!

told in order to get her back. John Travolta gives his best performance in years as a sniveling, corrupt FBI agent. Who plays both sides to get what he wants. This is when things get really crazy, with doublecrosses and violent raids but, to be frank, things are a little off from the beginning. Savages loves its hazy montages, be they of aggressive killings or a pictorial symphony of a spoiled girl’s trip to the mall. The pair agree that the only way to get “O” back alive is to go head-to-head with Elena and Lado – resulting in routinely compromised integrity and a trail of bloodshed along the way.

Often at the same time. The Movie begins with (Blake Lively) Ophelia (nicknamed “O”) narrating, but refusing to tell whether or not she’s doing so from beyond the grave. She introduces her character as a free spirit in a surprisingly stable three-way affair with ex-Navy SEAL Chon (Taylor Kitsch) and botany genius/Good Samaritan Ben (Aaron Johnson.) They all live in a gorgeous home on Laguna Beach and, in a flashback, we learn that they all work together distributing the world’s greatest strain of marijuana. They’ve achieved a true happiness, with Chon providing the occasional muscle and Ben gallivanting the globe, using his wealth to build clean water solutions in third world countries. The characters in Savages are constantly smoking pot, despite the fact that nobody ever seems stoned. Trouble comes though, when a Mexican cartel headed by Elena (Salma Hayek) and represented by Lado (Benicio Del Toro), demand to be part of their thriving business. The pair decides wisely to just walk away, but before they can skip town their love “O” is kidnapped. Now they have to do whatever they’re Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
