Festival Fun Parade begins with hundreds of people lining the streets to see the decorated floats, soca bands and dancing troupes pass by. Monday also sees the opening of the East End/Long Look Festival, and Tuesday will feature the International Soca Show, climaxing with one of the headliners, Mr. Vegas and his Bruk-It-Down-Dancers. Putting a finishing touch to the celebrations is the Carrot Bay Fiesta, which starts on Thursday with the beautiful Torch Light Procession. Friday is Culture Day featuring fun games such as donkey races, greased pig, tug of war, all helped along with music by VI Band and Jamaican reggae artist Mavado. Saturday is the last lap and features lots of music by international artists and the BVI’s own (3D) Third Dimension, Showtime Band and many more. So don’t miss a second of Festival 2012 – enjoy the music, the dancing, the parades and the good times as you jump to the beat! Join in the fun and have a happy and safe festival. – Jan Critchley

The 2012 Festival is well underway and offers lots of fun-filled and entertaining activities. The Festival Village is open every night so don’t miss out on the rides at Coney Island, and all the stalls offering everything from local crafts to mouth-watering food such as fried patties, johnny cakes, bull foot soup, amongst other delicacies. Some of the highlights include the International Reggae Show at the Festival Village in Road Town this Friday, featuring legends Barrington Levy, Junior Reid and Shine-I. On Saturday, enjoy the BSMA Car Show and Exhibition and the International Soca Show, with its heady blend of soul and calypso featuring Lashing Dogs, Shurwayne Winchester and Kassav. The main focus of the day on Sunday is the Freedom March and Emancipation Service at the Sunday Morning Well, the cornerstone of the entire Festival. Later that evening is the glamorous Miss BVI Pageant, which starts at 8pm at the Multi-Purpose Complex where a new queen will be crowned in time for her first appearance at the August Monday Parade. Serious party goers will party on through the night as the next day, August Monday, is the big one! Carnival Spirit “carnevale” in Italian means to “put away the meat,” a reference to the Lenten fast, and the name has since taken on a life of its own with celebrations throughout the world. The most famous Carnival in the Caribbean is, of course, Trinidad’s, and perhaps the most ribald is Rio de Janeiro’s. New Orleans once a French colony now attracts thousands of party-goers to its creole inspired Mardis Gras. Also called Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras is a literal translation from the French (mardi – Tuesday, and gras – fat), a reference to eating rich, fatty foods before the Lenten fast beginning on Ash Wednesday. The BVI’s festival has its roots not in Lent, but in the 19th century church picnics and fetes held annually to celebrate Emancipation. Its modern form began in 1953 when a parade was held to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. The procession of beauty queens, floats and troupes wended its way down Main Street, at the time Road Town’s only thoroughfare. It was such a success that the parade continued the following year, morphing into today’s larger and more colorful Festival celebrations that over the years keeps on growing. There may be bigger parades and grander celebrations elsewhere in the world, but in the end I think the BVI’s is just right for this small tightly knit community. Spirited and fun, it’s a harmonious and positive celebration of what it means to live on this special little island.

Festival is the sum of many parts – there are pageants both glamorous (Miss BVI), and cute (Prince and Princess), events of cultural pride like the Emancipation Proclamation ceremony at 2012 Prince & Princess Winners the Sunday Morning Well, and The Village – Festival’s throbbing center with its soca beats, pungent aromas, carnival rides and fairground games. For me though, the highlight is the parade. Costumed troupes, mocko jumbies, beauty queens, and jam band floats, exude color, humor and movement. In the BVI, Festival commemorates Emancipation on August 1st 1834, but it’s a celebration that has roots in many cultures. Many of the aspects of carnival can be found in Africa, for instance, where villagers traditionally dressed in masks and costumes and danced to bring good fortune, solve problems and appease the spirits of the dead. The famed carnivals of Trinidad, Rio and New Orleans may have gotten their start centuries ago in Italy. Masked and costumed, these ancient Italians would hold an exuberant fling before the advent of Lent, the somber 40-day period of fasting leading up to Easter. The term carnival or

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Summer Project A Flop AskBody Koren Dear Koren, Since January when the year started my resolution was to lose weight for a summer trip with friends. I have been exercising occasionally and eating better and now summer is here, I have only lost 6 pounds but I don’t look much different. I am so upset and frustrated that I am considering not going away with my friends as planned. How do I get out of this funky mood? You probably can’t help me, but I am writing anyway seeing how depressed I am feeling. –Fluffy

I would encourage you to perk up and smell the roses. It’s summer and you probably saved up for this vacation for a while, so do not deny yourself the pleasure. Your friends accept you for who you are, so accept yourself. They issued the invitation even when you were heavier, so there…your weight does not have to be an issue right now. Can you imagine how much more depressed you will be if your friends go off without you and then you are left behind grumbling…no no no…that attitude does not for a good summer make. Get up and shake off your blues by putting on a nice outfit and dancing around the house to some nice hot music. You made it this far in the year and that is enough to be happy for. You have friends with whom to have fun and you live in a tropical island. What more could a girl ask for?

Dear Fluffy, Do you know that wearing a smile and having a positive attitude makes you look beautiful? Do you know that confidence and self love are just as important as what is on the outside? Do you know that a good posture improves your appearance? So does wearing colours and styles that flatter you. All I am saying is that even if you don’t have the size you want, there are so many other considerations to looking and feeling good. Exercise and eating right are vital tools to weight loss and it sounds like you tried. The fact that you are six pounds lighter is good reason to pat yourself on the back. In the future though, while exercising occasionally is good to not gain weight, for the purpose of weight loss, you will have to do it with a bit more regularity. Anything done for your body is useful even if you don’t see the desired effects when you would like to.

Remembering Our Heritage - The Sunday Morning Well ple would freshen up before going to church or to town to conduct business. It provided water for animals in the area and was also used for washing, cooking and sometimes drinking. The well continued to serve the people until another one was sunk inside the schoolyard, however, it continued to serve as a meeting place. It was at the well where a large majority of slaves learned of their long awaited freedom from slavery! A bronze plaque commemorating this solemn event simply states: "On August 1st, 1834, the Proclamation of Emancipation was read in the territory of the Virgin Islands proclaiming 5133 Negro slaves free. This historic site, popularly known as the Sunday Morning Well is one of the sites where the order was read, abolishing the English plantation slavery system." Since slavery under British rule was abolished in 1834 generations of British Virgin Islanders have been born into freedom and self-determination.

Perhaps one of the most meaningful, historic sites in the British Virgin Islands is the Sunday Morning Well. The BVI Emancipation Festival commemorates the reading of the emancipation proclamation in front of the Sunday Morning Well in 1834. Every year, the BVI remembers this day and celebrates with parades, carnival rides, concerts and Rise & Shine processions (j’ouvert) in Road Town, East End and Carrot Bay. The Sunday Morning Well was a place where peo-

2012 Festival Headliners Unveiled hop's Snoop Dogg and Lady G. Since then numerous compilations have continued to appear featuring much of the singer's greatest work and no reggae festival is deemed complete without his presence. Mr. Vegas, a Jamaican dancehall star, will be entertaining the crowd with his Bruk-it-down dancers at the East End/Long Look festival on Tuesday, 7th August. Originally from Jamaica, he found fame in 1998 with hits such as Yu Sure, Jack It Up, and Latest News and Mr. Vegas became increasingly in demand as a guest artist by top international performers. Probably one of his most popular albums was released in 2001 when he issued Damn Right, featuring guest appearances from Shaggy and Big Yard; this album went to number two on the US Reggae chart. Mavado a reggae singer influenced by the likes of Bounty Killer and Cutty Ranks was born and raised in Jamaica and he will be entertaining the crowds on August 10th at Carrot Bay. In 2004 Mavado released Real McKoy, his breakthrough single. Two years later, the song Weh Dem a Do would give him his next big hit, and the successful Dreaming and Bawl Dem a Bawl singles would follow soon after. In 2007, Mavado completed his debut album, Gangster for Life. The release featured more hits like Top Shotta Nah Miss and Dying plus Real McKoy with a Full Clip, a new mix of the track that, a year later, would be featured in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto 4. His 2008 cut I'm on the Rock featured Jay-Z on its remix before being re-recorded as We Need Barack in support of the presidential hopeful. So if you enjoy your reggae and dancehall tunes, don’t miss these legendary performers at Festival 2012.

Barrington Levy

The live entertainment this Festival, is featuring three of the top Jamaican reggae and dancehall artists, Barrington Levi, Mr Vegas and Mavado. Barrington Levy is a legendary artist whose music has spanned decades. Known as the Mellow Canary of Reggae, he will be bringing his special old skool style of reggae to the International Reggae show at Festival Village on Friday, August 3rd. He cut his first single, My Black Girl in 1977. Around 1980 he began working with producer Jah Screw and toured the UK in 1984 where he enjoyed a big hit on the reggae charts with Under Mi Sensi. This was followed by Here I Come, which became the title track to the album that took Britain by storm and ensured that Levy walked away with the Best Vocalist Award at Britain's Reggae Awards. In the 90s he worked with Beenie Man and Mega Banton for She’s Mine. Levy's fame surged anew in 1996 with the release of Living Dangerously, a duet with Bounty Killer that soared to the top of dancehall charts worldwide. The song became the title track of a 1998 Breakaway Records compilation album on which Levy shared the spotlight with a variety of stars, including hipLimin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Giving Up The Best Seat For A Better Seat LONDON: In my possession, I had the accreditation, transportation pass and the ticket to the opening ceremonies – one of the most coveted events in the London 2012 Olympic Games – to sit in the VIP seating with the Olympic Family. Many would have paid a tidy sum for that privilege. But the athlete, the Olympian, the journalist, the photographer in me, just couldn’t stand the thought of being a sedentary observer, watching friends from as far away as Tuvalu and Kiribati, along with those from throughout the Americas and elsewhere passing by. With such a “tough” decision, I instead, decided I would simply resort to watching the “closing ceremony” from those seats for the very first time in four Olympic Games. Taking the walk from the Olympic Village to the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, through tons of school children from throughout England, then meeting one group with the British Virgin Islands superimposed over the flag, wasn’t something I would have experienced from the VIP seats. Yes, I would have collected my VIP lunch box, seen all the lead up activities to the parade of the 204 nations from around the globe, but I would not have gotten what I wanted most: meeting the athletes, exchanging pins (really the biggest Olympic sport), getting the rush of walking into the stadium, and most importantly, capturing the legacy of the BVI delegation. I would have missed that photo op with 1984 Olympian Dr. Robin Tattersall and 2012 Olympians Tahesai Harrigan-Scott and J’Maal Alexander – then as an ’84 Olympian myself, gotten in the photo as well. But, on the field of play I missed all that. Instead, I

Team BVI in front of the Olympic Stadium

was able to practice my Spanish and wish Puerto Rico ‘s Javier Cluson, a 400m Intermediate Hurdle gold medal prospect, mucho suerte. A moment with reigning IAAF World Championships 400m gold medalist, Botswana’s Amantle Montsho – who’s in line to mine gold in London, was priceless. Chillin' with Grenada’s 2011 IAAF 400m World Champion Kirani James – who’s eyeing the OECS’ first Olympic Games medal – wouldn’t have been enjoyable from the stands among persons sipping red wine. It would have been an opportunity missed. Taking a trip down memory lane with Dr. Robin Tattersall in the middle of the London Olympic Stadium, was simply priceless. Doc is our oldest Olympian who competed in the inaugural Los Angeles venture in 1984 and again in Barcelona in 1992. Hearing him speaking about “the thrill” would definitely have been lost just watching him stroll by from the stands. Hearing J’Maal expressing his feelings about the ceremony or Tahesia comparing the ceremony with Beijing four years ago, would have been missed sitting in the stands watching them walking by and waving. I might have had a ticket to the best seat, but I definitely settled for a better seat in the house. 19
