This Week’s Feature Story

BVI Sea Perch Challenge The first question you may ask is “What is a Sea Perch?” Well, it is an underwater robot, comprised mostly of pvc piping and three small motors and a control box that is held by the “driver” on shore. Switches send signals down a tether enabling the vehicle to dive and maneuver underwater. At later stages more advanced features can be added such as cameras and manipulator arms which add to its capabilities. If you fancy trying one out for size, then head down to Nanny Cay pool from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, 8th September where Bill Stewart, who heads up the initiative, and his team will give you the opportunity to have a go for yourself. It will be a fun afternoon, with free food, refreshments and the chance for teenagers and young adults to use the Sea Perch and compete for great prizes. Bill explained, “The objective here is to make the Sea Perch available to students in schools throughout the BVI. The teenagers would build the underwater robot themselves basically bringing engineering to life. Ultimately though the aim is to help interest students in the field of engineering as a career, and as an island nation, these careers could include

marine biology, offshore engineering and naval architecture for example.” He continued, “We are currently at the early stages, trying to make students, school boards, teachers and the BVI Government aware of the program and its benefits.” Each basic Sea Perch is made from materials that cost less than $100 and arrangements are being made for all components to be made available in the BVI through existing retail outlets. He added, “In fact, we currently have enough motors, propellors, shaft couplers, switches, boxes, etc to build 20 Sea Perch on the island which we plan to give to those schools who seize this opportunity and adopt the BVI Sea Perch program as either part of the science curriculum or as an extra-curricular activity.” With over 40 years as an Ocean Engineer and Naval Architect, to Bill, this project is one way that he can give back to the community that he lives in. Any schools or teachers who would like more information about this exciting educational initiative, please contact Bill Stewart on 495-4925 or e-mail him at BVISeaPearch@gmail.com. – Jan Critchley

The Power of the Tongue

Ask Koren

The weight of the tongue Last week, we were appalled to hear a priest say that some of the young children who have been sexually molested are to blame for seducing their attackers. The world reeled in horror that a man of the cloth could be so insensitive and unlearned and could not only harbor such thoughts, but also utter such words. Many of us might not say something that heinous but the things we allow to roll off of our tongues could do great damage to many, even ourselves. That small part of the body has the potential to hurt, to tear down, to castigate, to gossip, to lie and it also has the power to heal, to soothe, to teach, to uplift, to encourage and to speak truth. As we focus on our speech, here are three important things to remember: Spoken words cannot be taken back Sometimes you say something and when you see the look on the person’s face, you instantly regret it but it is too late. Think before you talk and even when you are angry, try to explain how you are feeling without calling the person all sorts of evil names that could really cause a rift in the relationship. Listen more than you speak We learn a lot when we listen. Some of us are know-it-alls and if we would pause and pay attention, we would not sound so foolish when we open our mouths. Many times we are just waiting for the other

person to finish what they are saying to jump in with our stories and we are not really paying attention to what they are saying. As a result what we say is not relevant or helpful. Your words can change your life The way you speak about yourself becomes your reality. Constantly calling yourself fat, stupid, ugly or other labels that make you feel worse is unhealthy and affects your behaviour. When you speak down about yourself you start to believe it and you become unmotivated. Start speaking positively about yourself. That is not to say you will pretend that you are perfect but speaking about yourself with love, gentleness and hope can motivate you to treat yourself better. While it has been said that the pen is mightier than the sword, it can be argued that the tongue is the mightiest of them all. Summer Hols with a Tribute to St. Ursula Isn’t summer in the Virgin Islands wonderful? It’s vacation time for all those in the tourist industry and a chance to get off the rock and broaden one’s horizons. There are several things that I definitely don’t want to do – go to the beach, go sailing, go snorkeling; I do those things every other week of the year. This year we (my wife Monique and I) decided to explore a little more of Puerto Rico. We had explored the old city of San Juan before but there is so much art, architecture, culture and history that we decided to do it again. We were not disappointed. Our 17th–century boutique hotel, the Gallery, is a museum in itself. Owned by an artist and sculptor, with works of art around every coratmosphere is definitely Elizabethan (probably not a

Salmon Fishing In Yemen Romance and whimsy are combined in the unlikely named movie, Salmon Fishing In Yemen. Ewan Macgregor plays Dr. Alfred Jones, a stuffy bureaucrat and fisheries expert who works for the UK government. He is approached by Harriet (Emily Blunt) the glamorous and energetic assistant to a Yemeni sheik (Amr Waked), who pitches the Sheik’s outrageous plan to create a salmon fishing Mecca in the Yemen desert. The idea may have begun and ended there except that the British government, following a series of disastrous bombings in Afghanistan, needs a good news story from the Middle East. Patricia, the prime minister’s PR secretary played by a withering Kristen Scott Thomas, determines with cutthroat efficiency that a story about Yemeni salmon fishing is made to order. Coerced by his superiors to act as a fisheries advisor to the Sheik, the reluctant Alfred must figure out how to import 10,000 wild North Atlantic salmon to Yemen from Britain. No easy task, especially when the idea becomes its own public relations nightmare once British fishermen learn that their salmon stock may virtually disappear overnight. Along with Emily, Alfred is whisked to Scotland where the Sheik in his own PR gambit takes Alfred fishing on a bucolic river on his vast estate. The deal is now sealed and Alfred decides that while using British wild salmon might be deeply unpopular with Britons, farmed salmon would be fine – providing that they still retain the genetic capability to swim upstream. Several uncertainties run through the movie, one

of course is whether the Sheik’s pie in the sky scheme can be made to work; the other is whether a romance will develop between Alfred and Emily. Like the salmon project this also is a complicated venture – Emily’s boyfriend, a British special forces operative is missing in action and Alfred is married, although less and less happily. When the project’s large cast of disparate characters – from the Sheik’s gun toting retinue to a covey of publicity loving UK ministers – converge in Yemen for the project’s launch there is a sense of misplaced optimism. The unexpected arrival of Emily’s boyfriend, who is helicoptered in wearing his combat fatigues, is all part of the well-orchestrated show. To tell how well it turns out for Alfred and Emily’s romance, as well as salmon fishing in Yemen, would give away too much. But let’s just say that both projects are fraught with challenges in this lighthearted romance with a twist. 13

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Blows It Up or Season 3 On a recent Thursday night in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, N.Y., a huge fireball lit up the night sky. Whatever else happens during Season 3 of HBO’s Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire, which launches Sunday, Sept. 16, there are going to be some serious fireworks at some point. “I think Greenpoint is still there,” says series executive producer/creator Terence Winter the next morning, “so we’re all good. We were on the news and everything. It was great.” As to whether it startled the locals, Winter says, “I don’t think so. There was a lot of advance notice, and the police department said they didn’t really get any more calls than they usually get on any given Thursday night. So no, I think New Yorkers are so jaded, a giant fireball goes up in the sky, and nobody really noticed.” According to Winter, the new season picks up after a gap of 14 months. Atlantic City wheeler-dealer Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi) has moved beyond pulling political strings while dealing illegal booze on the side to becoming a full-fledged bootlegger behind the facade of a philanthropist. On the personal side, he is already straying in his marriage to mistress Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald) with new mistress Billie Kent (Meg Chambers Steele). Before 1923 can even get under way on New Year’s Eve, Nucky makes a resolution that irritates Sicilian-born New York gangster Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale). On the other hand, it doesn’t take much to irritate Rosetti. “When his business gets messed with by Nucky,” says Cannavale, “he takes it very personally. He just gets very angry and starts doing very bad things. But

beyond that, what’s fun about the part is he’s a guy who takes things way too personally. “That’s why I love the part so much. He’s the kind of guy who almost shouldn’t be in this business, because anything anybody says to him, he takes the wrong way. He’s very, very sensitive, and it’s very, very dangerous to criticize him in any way or form. Even joking is a chance with this guy. “As you’ll see in the first episode, I show that ugly side very quickly in the series. It’s the first scene in the show. In that scene, it’s written very well to show just how easily that switch can just flip and how nuts this guy can be.” If Cannavale is enjoying playing the character as written, Winter is equally enjoying putting something new on the page. “It all feels so new,” Winter says. “It really was like reinventing the show. Everybody was in a different place psychologically - in many cases literally and physically in different places - so we got to introduce this new character, which was really fun. “Bobby Cannavale being a perfect segue. Getting to work with Bobby, getting to know him and getting to marvel at his amazing performance, for us, was really fun. It’s like injecting new energy, new personality, and just this new kind of really edgy, crazy character into the show. We hadn’t really had anything like that character before. “Not taking anything away from writing the other characters, but we already knew who all of these people were. Bobby came in as a new and different energy, and that was challenging.” 15

Caribbean Cup Football Test The BVI’s National Football Team is among 25 teams competing for the CFU Digicel Caribbean Cup. Yesterday (Wednesday) they played Martinique, on Friday they will play against Suriname and on Sunday they will play Montserrat. Currently, Team BVI is #191 on the FIFA ranking system and #32 in the CONCACAF region. Association president Andy Bickerton said an executive level decision has been made to enter their various teams in as many competitions that they can, which they think are within their abilities. The rebuilt team boasts players between 17 and 29 years and is a defensive minded squad according to coach Avondale “Avon” Williams. “We expect to give a good account of ourselves,” Rickie Davis the team manager said. “It will give us the clearest indication to date of where we are and how we are progressing with the national team overall.” There’s confidence entering this particular tournament Williams said, as they beat Anguilla over the summer 1-0 as part of their tune up activities among other matches. “I’m very pleased with the team’s fitness level,” Williams stated. Bickerton said that based on the progress of the team, it is expected that they will be competitive against the stronger teams of Suriname and Martinique. "We are very excited about this. The coaching team has put in a lot of time and preparation,” he noted. “It’s a learning experience for us, but we think it’s important for the development of football here, we play as many international games as we can – both at ladies and men’s levels – obviously, there are financial constraints.”

Some players/ officials for the Caribbean Cup

Bickerton said that by entering the international competitions in the region as they found out earlier this summer with the Under-17s, they were in a strong group which was beyond their capabilities. He said they have been working with the Caribbean Football Union to conduct more regional tournaments. “Obviously, that is an expensive foray for the BVIFA to send a team as far as Trinidad. It makes a lot more sense for us to compete regionally in say the Leeward Islands or Windward Islands levels where we can be a lot more competitive at all levels because obviously we are a much smaller Territory, not like islands like St. Vincent and Grenada and so on," he explained. “We can judge our progress by our competitiveness against those kind of teams. Our men have drawn two strong teams in Martinique and Suriname, but based on the progress they’ve been making, we are optimistic that they will be competitive in those games.” Bickerton said that if youngsters in the youth program – both boys and girls – can see the kind of games that are there for them to be involved with, it will give impetus to the overall programs. 17
