This Week’s Feature Story
Freakish Fun At Nanny Cay their imagination and dress up to try and win prizes in an array of categories. This year, children of all ages up to 18 years can enter to be judged the most scary, most original, prettiest, funniest, best cartoon character / super hero and best group (of 3 persons or more). “We’ve also got some exciting new attractions this year,” said Jaeda. “Our posters list just a sampler of the activities on offer and as I am presented with new ideas everyday, I am sure there will be something for everyone!” A fortune teller’s tent, children’s book stall and ‘eata-donut-off-a-string’ stall are some of the planned additions to the day’s family oriented activities. Other booths and stalls at the party include face painting, a bouncy castle, haunted house, toy stall, lucky dip and more. Food and drinks will also be on sale. The cost of entry is $1, with an additional $1 registration fee for those taking part in the parade. All the proceeds generated on the day will go towards the continued growth and development of Cedar International School with a percentage donated to Breast Cancer Awareness whose successful campaign has run throughout the month of October. Cedar’s costume party 2010 Organised by the Cedar students, parents and faculty as part of the school’s fundraising activities, the community event will run from 3 - 6pm with the costume parade starting at 4.15pm. “We are really looking forward to welcoming families and children of all ages,” said Jaeda Wooldridge, Cedar International School development director and event organiser. “This party seems to draw more and more people each year and, as a community school, we are delighted to host such a socially popular event. The parade is a particularly big crowd-pleaser as people love to dress up, prizes or no prizes, and I am always amazed at how much effort goes into the costumes.” Over the last two decades, the costume parade has attracted and challenged scores of participants to explore

Real Steel The time is the near future and Hugh Jackman plays Charlie, an irresponsible, washed-up prizefighter who ekes out a living as manager for boxing robots. When his ex-wife dies, he’s forced to spend a summer looking after his 11-year-old son — a boy he’s never really known (played by newcomer Dakota Goyo) who just happens to be a savvy superfan of robot boxers and it’s the kid who has faith in a “junk pile” Jackman is ready to write off. With some T.L.C. and Jackman’s boxing experience, the discarded machine takes them to the Big Time, and helps cement the damaged relation-

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Stressed Out Dear Koren, I am in a common-law relationship with a man for almost 10 years and we both have children from previous marriages. Every time the marriage word comes up, he seems uneasy and makes an excuse – either we don’t have money or something else. I am a Christian and I feel that I have had enough of living in sin with a man that doesn’t know what he really wants . I have lost all interest in this relationship and I just want to move on but I am unemployed and I have two kids that I have to provide for. Please give me some advice. – Stressed Out
to your friends and family so they can know you are looking and as you are a Christian, pray about it also. If no one has a job to offer, then consider selfemployment. What are you good at? Think of some service or product you can provide and start small. Having your own income makes a difference in the level of freedom you enjoy. You could also consider having the children’s biological father support them financially, so that takes some of the burden off of you. There might also be laws that provide alimony to common law wives, after separation. Either way, do something to change your situation so you could have peace of mind. Get busy and remember your attitude affects your actions. Don’t think like someone who is defeated already. Be positive and coupled with faith and effort, it could make a huge difference in your life.
Dear Stressed Out, Stress is not good for your health and can cause medical problems, so it would be good if you can change that. I can understand if in the first year or two your partner needs time to plan and save for the wedding, but ten years later? No, that is just an excuse. Ask him to be honest with you and tell you why marriage is not an option. If he is not interested in getting married and it is important for your faith and well-being, then you have to make a decision whether to stay or to go. You are financially dependent on him which makes leaving difficult. I assume that you have tried looking for a job; don’t give up. Fighting The Good Fight Also, on Friday as part of their membership drive, there’s another chance to register with the Cancer Society between 10am and 3pm at LIME. Secretary Lisa Mandisa Frett said, “We have been really encouraged at the number of new members signing up, especially when we had the screening. Around 30 new persons registered that day.” On Sunday, October 30th a womens only walk and run is scheduled for 3pm at the Noel Lloyd Park. Registration is from 12:30pm with warm up Zumba beforehand. This event is run by Sensus Gym, which, through sponsors and donations, will help in providing free mammograms for women of the BVI who otherwise would not be able to afford this essential test, as early detection is the best chance of beating breast cancer.
October has seen a good number of events all aimed at raising awareness of Breast Cancer. Two weeks ago, Friday, Road Town was awash with people proudly wearing pink everywhere. They ranged from “Hope, Love, Life” t-shirts to pink hats and wristbands. Even our roundabouts got the makeover with pink and black balloons adorning them. As the month draws to a close, there are still several events coming up such as the UMI “Color Me Pink” fashion show that starts at 5pm on Friday, 28th October and promises to include some interesting segments.

Harmon Moonlights From ‘NCIS’ In USA’s ‘Certain Prey’ If you star in one of television’s top shows, you’ll likely get a green light for any other project you want to do. Mark Harmon hasn’t done much work outside NCIS since the hit CBS series began, but he tackles a new role in the mystery movie John Sandford’s Certain Prey airing on Sunday, Nov. 6 on USA Network, also the home of frequent NCIS repeats. An executive producer of the film as well, Harmon plays Lucas Davenport, protagonist of more than 20 novels by Sandford (a pseudonym of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and journalist John Roswell Camp). Minneapolis’ deputy police chief, Davenport is wealthy through his computer expertise, but he likes his daily job. In Certain Prey, he races FBI agents to determine whether a hit woman murdered an attorney’s wife. Now in Season 9 of playing naval investigative team leader Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Harmon sees commonalities in Davenport. Harmon acknowledges what Tom Selleck has done with his recurring CBS movies based on Robert B. Parker’s novels about lawman Jesse Stone: “Tom’s done each job with those, but if this first one does not do well, I don’t know there ever will be a second one. The people involved jumped into it thinking this would be an appropriate first step to see what we had. “USA certainly provided a template to do this in a manner other than a (broadcast) network manner, but it’s a difficult character and an edgy story, as most of these (Sandford) books are. Whether we pulled it off, I don’t know. I’ve watched it too many times to make an objective judgment.” “It also was important for me to do this, because
getting back out there with a different crew and different people puts you back in touch with what the life of an actor is. I just thought the project, and the material, warranted the opportunity and the try.” USA will lead directly into Certain Prey with a marathon of “NCIS” episodes. That’s fine with Harmon, who will mark his 25th wedding anniversary with Mork & Mindy actress Pam Dawber in March. “Now it’s about whether people watch the movie and like it,” he reasons. “There’s a big difference between sitting in a room where people want to work with you and having to try to convince people to work with you. A lot of people made this come full circle, but from where I sit, you hope to make it work in a different way than the series works.”
