Alison Knights Bramble is probably best known for running the BVI Watersports Centre together with her husband Colin and for their formation of the Special Olympics BVI which helps teach people with disabilities and learning difficulties to sail. Alison, however, has other hidden talents and when not out on the water has penned her very first novel entitled the Eye of the Storm which will be launched this Saturday, November 5th. Rumor has it that this could be the very first in a series of novels, and that Alison or AK Bramble (as it has been suggested she becomes known), could be the next famous author of Harry Potter fame! The launch of Alison’s novel will be at the BVI Watersports Centre and Boat House restaurant at Sea Cows bay from noon to 3pm. At the event you can be one of the first people on island to have your very own signed copy of this special novel. While you are there, pick up a competition entry form and be in to win a Kindle. The book is an adventure novel for young adults with a story that has all the desirable elements of exploration, suspense and discovery. It chronicles the adventures of 13-year-old Ben Johnson who relocates from the UK with his family to a remote Caribbean island where he reluc-

Another Type Of Paradise from Maine to New York, through the White Mountains, past rivers and waterfalls and tree colors outdoing each other in their finest burnt oranges, barn reds and golden rod yellows. It was hard to see the devastation in Vermont from Hurricane Irene’s tempestuous dance across the land in late August. Many roads were still being rebuilt and the sight of one of the wonderful historic covered bridges half washed away was like seeing a page of history torn from the book. But really what the fall visit brought home to me was that what some people mistakenly consider “paradise” – beautiful year round temperate climates, beaches and palms is really just the “grass is greener” syndrome. Experiencing the beauty of nature’s transitional seasons is another type of paradise. However, living through cold, brutal winters is something I’ll leave to my sister in Maine. See you next fall!
I traveled recently to the US to enjoy the fall colors on the East Coast, a ritual some pay dearly for. My sister, whose home is in Maine told me of a tour company that organizes an annual fall color tour for California seniors. Some never get off the bus as she found out a few years ago when she met a disappointed group at the restaurant where she works part time – a two week tour and it rained every day! I was very fortunate, as a very fickle weather system in the East has produced heavy rains this year and a late blooming fall color show – but the sun was out! What I didn’t count on after 16 plus years in the islands without a return fall visit was that I might react to the various pollens in the air. Never having had an allergy and no reaction to spring pollens, I was amazed to see all the classic allergy symptoms appear in my first days there. You know them; I don’t need to list the unpleasant side effects. Suffice it to say Kleenex became my closest companion. Apparently ragweed is a fall culprit, able to travels hundreds of miles in the wind. Not sure what the mileage was before entering my nasal path, but sneezing did not seem to deter it. However, this was not to put a damper on my childlike “ooohhs’s and aaahhh’s” as my sister and I drove

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Once A Week Dear Koren, I am 28 and my boyfriend of one year is 33. Is it normal for a woman to be more interested in intimacy than a man? He treats me well, buys me nice things and is sweet and considerate, but he just does not want to do that enough. Once a week seems good enough for him and I am not used to that from other guys I have dated. Should I ask him about it? – Curious
reason for his behavior, or lack of behavior. It is true that some men who have same-sex preferences might take a girlfriend just for appearances sake and try to maintain a dutiful appearance of a relationship. Others have had a girlfriend to cover a relationship with a married lover. In any event, if either of these were the issue, you would see some other evidence of it; he would be sneaking around to take calls, would be gone for long periods of time with no explanation and would be very irritated if you question him. Intimacy is an important part of a relationship, so it would be nice if you both are on the same page, or at least as close as possible. So try to meet him halfway and I hope the end result is positive for you both.
Dear Curious, I have not heard of many men who are thirtythree and healthy and only wanting sex once a week, but it is possible. Everyone is made up differently and once a week might just be enough for him. If it is not enough for you then ask for more. Don’t criticize or make fun of his preference, just let him know that you enjoy being close to him, so you would like to engage in those activities more often. Make an effort to find out if there is some medical issue or if he is tired. If that is not the case, then find out what he likes and engage more in that, so that he would be more inclined to participate. Communication is an important part of intimacy and understanding your partner goes a long way in the quest for mutual satisfaction. You might have wondered if he was not sufficiently attracted to you or if there was some other

Water For Elephants An old man leaves his nursing home and walks across town to the circus, but by the time he gets there, the show is over and the crew is packing up. A sympathetic manager finds him and asks if he can help, eliciting a flood of memories – it seems that the man, Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson from Twilight series fame) had worked in the Benzini Brothers circus long ago. These memories are the pretext of this sentimental period piece, part drama and part love story. It’s 1931 at the height of the Great Depression, and Jacob, son of Polish immigrants, is a veterinary student at Cornell University in New York State. The sudden death of his parents has left Jacob penniless; confused and in dis-

At Last – It’s Gaming Night!
Don’t Mow it – Grow it
This annual fundraiser could not come at a better time, so make it a date to come out and play at the specially themed “Las Vegas Gaming Night” at Nanny Cay this Saturday, 5th November from 7pm. Try your luck at Black Jack, Crab Racing and Roulette and win fantastic prizes. Dinner is also available and you get $10 free chips with your $25 entry fee. Dress to impress and you may also win a prize, so get all casino glam for the occasion. All proceeds go to the Animal Shelter.
Guys, do something different this month and join in the fun of “Movember.” Simply drop into the Dove during the first week of this month to register. You must be clean-shaven at the time of registration, then grow and groom through the month. Get your sponsorship form filled and help raise awareness of prostate and other cancers affecting men. The exciting culmination of the event is the “Man of Movember Awards” where you can showcase your new look at Nanny Cay Beach Bar on 30th November.
Bonfire Night
Help for Heroes BVI Get this special cycle event off to a great start by showing up at the Sports Club on November 4th between 3pm and 7:30pm for pre-race registration and sponsorship forms. This special event raises funds to provide sporting equipment for injured service men and women. Governor, Mr. Boyd McCleary will start the race, fittingly on Remembrance Sunday. For more information and pre-registration details contact Barney, a Grade 10 student of Cedar School who has organized the race on 544-7151 or nsbarn@hotmail.com.
Bring your own firewood and enjoy bonfire night with a difference at Trellis Bay. Bonfire night is a tradition that is always held on the 5th November and marks Guy Fawkes’ failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in the UK – way back in 1605. Although there will be no plots to blow up Trellis Bay, there will be a big bonfire, Guy Fawkes Punch, a DJ and Sistah Joyce to keep your feet tapping all night.
Anna Tunnicliffe at RBVIYC Come, listen and meet one of the best sailors in the world, the inspiring Anna Tunnicliffe, Olympic Gold medalist and 2010 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year. On Thursday, 3rd November Anna will be giving talks to KATS Kids at Nanny Cay at 5pm before moving on the RBVIYC for her presentation that begins at 6:30pm.

Nate Berkus’ Inner Sanctum hand sales. “I truly remember being excited when there was a garage sale between my house and the bus stop,” he says. “I was always interested in things, not for the status, but to tell the story.” He credits his mom for making him do only one season of baseball and encouraging his natural talents. She allowed him to try out his burgeoning taste, and Berkus recalls, “I had a Ralph Lauren moment at around 11. Everything was plaid.” He still hangs out at antiques marts. “I am always on a quest,” he says, “for my own home or another’s. It’s the process of discovery.”
Were fans to get invited to their favorite TV designers’ homes and be met with magazines piled on rickety tables, peeling paint, stained sofas and bare walls, it would be disappointing and somehow mark them as fraudulent. So it’s reassuring that Nate Berkus’ private space, a few doors down from the Manhattan studio where his self-titled weekday syndicated show tapes, is precisely as it should be — lovely. Studio sets, by necessity, are functional places. What looks like a huge emergency room or the Oval Office on TV is often a small, cramped room where the walls don’t meet the ceilings, and banks of hot lights are overhead while rivers of industrial wires snake over the floor. His set includes seats for a live audience, and as they file out, Berkus retires to his private space. Shutting the door to his office blocks out everything else, and that’s not easy on Manhattan’s deep West Side where the Hudson River is just down the street. “It’s important for me to have a space not only that I am comfortable in but the producers are comfortable in,” he says. “I used to get dressed in here.” But he was bustling about too much, so he settled into this room, the size of many apartments in Manhattan. He brought his beloved vintage lamps and couches, art and rugs from Chicago. Berkus, the son of HGTV’s Nancy Golden, grew up in Minnetonka, Minn., where he has clear memories of enjoying the thrill of the hunt for the perfect home furnishing, visiting antiques stores and browsing at secondLimin’ Times Entertainment Guide

A Half Marathon Tune Up Battle I must thank Kay Reddy for not getting me out of bed early this weekend for the finale of the Ceres Juices 10K Series, which has been moved from the 6:30 am start to a relaxed 4:30 pm Saturday afternoon race. Registration will be at 4 pm….thank God not at 6 am so I can stay out later. Really, I want to be awake to see the men’s battle between veterans Zebalon McLean and Emrol Amsterdam who will duke it out for the first place men’s prize while another half dozen will try to claim the bronze medal. Meriel Steadman who has locked up the woman’s title is away, meaning that none of the men who have beaten her over the course of the series will have to contend with her this weekend. Do I hear relief? Saturday’s 10K race is not only the season finale, but a tune up for the Deloite/OGIER BVI Half Marathon supported by Dasani. The race starts in front of Banco Popular next to the Watering Hole, turning left at Columbian Emeralds, following the Sir Francis Drake Highway to turn in Sea Cows Bay, just past horse race track. The race returns along the same route to the Bobby’s Roundabout to finish in front of the Watering Hole. Along the route water stops will be in front of Island Department Store at approx 3.3 and 6km. The course is part of the 6th BVI Half Marathon warm up course and an opportunity to run 6 miles of the route. Already, some 33 persons pre registered by the October 31 deadline for the November 19 race, which covers 13.1 miles. Following the conclusion of Saturdays race, awards
Hastings Grant, left and Stephanie Russ Penn working behind the scenes at the road races
for top places, series finishers and Ceres juices will be presented immediately after the race. I must however thank Kay Reddy, Stephanie Russ Penn and Zebalon McLean for their work in the area of road racing, starting with the Blenheim Trust 5K Series earlier in the spring and continuing with the Ceres Juices 10K Series. Special thanks also to Hastings Grant who has been the official starter and time keeper of all the road races. Thanks too, to all the participants who come out and make a successful event over the course of the year and the sponsors who have supported these events – Blenheim Trust (BVI) Ltd.; Ceres Juices and Road Town Wholesale and its Coco Cola products who have also supported such events as the Olympic Day Run and related activities and the recent NACAC 10K Series which was held in the territory for the very first time. So, as the road racing season comes to a close, there’s the last battle on this weekend, to see who will be the top road racing 19
