Joseph ‘Macarldie’ Nibbs to Headline VI Showcase this Saturday ALSO THIS WEEK: VISAR Backgammon Tournament • TICO Wine & Spirit Expo • Full Moon Party • Pacquiao vs Marques

This Week’s Feature Story

HLSCC Showcase VI Artists Calling all jazz fans, don’t miss the first of two VI Showcases lined up for your entertainment as part of HLSCC’s Performing Arts Series. The first showcase takes place this Saturday, 12 November at 8pm and features Joseph “Macarldie” Nibbs and the Jazz All-stars, and a special appearance by soloist Shirley Crabbe. Macarldie, grew up in Tortola and started performing early as a teenager at hotels and clubs playing top 40 hits. After moving to the US, he studied jazz, classical piano and vocals, before pursuing his dream of performing all over the world. His sound blends jazz, blues and Caribbean styles and is instantly recognizable as his own. Marcarldie has also played with many music greats such as Ernest Ranglin and has opened for Gregory Isaacs, Dizzy Gillespie and many others. Macarldie has also invited local musicians to accompany him, known as the Jazz All-stars. Performing on Saturday will be saxophonist, Jeremy Vanterpool, bass guitarist Brandon Powell, and percussionists Nehassie Chalwell and Dylan Penn. Shirley Crabbe brings her distinctive style to the ensemble. A seasoned jazz vocalist who sings songs that speak to the heart. She was inspired as a teenager by a performance by Ella Fitzgerald. “I’ve always had a pas-

sion for singing, but when I heard Ella sing, I knew that jazz singing was what I really wanted to do,” she explained. In 2010, Shirley released her long-awaited first debut album, Home. Her remarkable performances Shirley Crabbe reveal a voice that caresses the lyrics of ballads with emotion and projects swinging tunes with power. President of HLSCC, Dr Karl Dawson said “Over the past few years, we have been seeking to include performers from the Virgin Islands as part of the line up for the Performing Arts Series. The idea is to expand the Series to include more genres of music and varied types of performances.” So get your tickets today and enjoy an evening of eclectic jazz and blues. For more info and tickets contact Mrs. Linette Baa at HLSCC on 852-7223.

Catching A Ride holes, gravel, upturned tarmac and speed bumps. “We need the Queen to come,” she announced. “Excuse me,” I answered, perplexed. “We only get the roads repaired when someone from the royal family comes to visit,” she answered. “Or, when there is an election,” I responded, thinking how an election was imminent and the road was still unpaved. Well, of course, we hadn’t waited long enough. A week before election day, the West End Road, or at least a portion of it, sported a shiny new layer of tarmac. Then there was the day I gave a ride to a lady along the Ridge Road who took out one of those fund raising sheets asking for a donation to a charity I hadn’t heard of. Hesitant to open my wallet for an unknown cause, I suggested that she should have some type of identification. Instead, she asked to be let out of the car, her destination was not town after all, but the intersection by Rudy’s Outside Bar. I saw her waving another car down as I pulled away. Nice work if you can get it. Stopping for riders is one of the lovely things about living on a small island; I’m not afraid of picking up hitchhikers, and they are not afraid of accepting a ride from me. Like many things that come as part of the package of life on Tortola, it is a practice from a bygone era, and I hope it stays that way.

As with most people who have cars on Tortola and drive to work on along the West End Road, I pick up riders from time to time. I’m a bit fussy. I like my fellow passengers to be neat and polite and not be talking on cell phones as they climb into the car! I certainly appreciate a “good day “ or “good morning” as they sit down in the passenger seat, and have given an etiquette lesson or two to children who forget to do so – or forget their “thank you” as they get out. Most, though, are well-mannered and are good companions. Many riders have left a lasting impression – usually for the good. We have discussed, climate change, politics, and exchanged shopping tips. In a moment of prescience a recent rider commented on the state of the roads – or what is left of the West End Road between pot-

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Our Daughter Is Named After His Ex Dear Koren, I just got the shock of my life. My husband and I have a 4-year old daughter and he had named her when she was born. Now about two weeks ago, we bumped into an ex of his at a children’s movie and she called her daughter by the same name which is an amended version of hers. To make a long story short, he confessed that they had both liked the name and planned to call their daughter by that name, but broke up before they had kids. I told him that I was his wife so he should have changed that plan as our daughter will now be a constant reminder of that ex. Am I overreacting? – LT

past boyfriends. Has your perspective or desires changed just because you mentioned it to them or stopped seeing them? You probably still own a dress or blouse that you bought simply because an ex liked the style or colour. If you look at it that way, you will realize that he really did nothing wrong in using a name he liked from back in the day. You cannot change the child’s name at this point, so the best thing to change is your perspective on the issue. Before you met this ex two weeks ago, she was not an issue, so don’t make her one now. Focus on loving your husband and your child and try not to hold any resentment to the child’s name that would cause you to treat her differently. Pay attention to the fact that your husband married you and not this person and that you share a beautiful daughter who is quite innocent to all this drama.

Dear LT, This is really a deep issue. On the one hand, this man chose you and married you, but on the other hand, your child bears a name that he and his ex talked about and liked. I can see why you would be shocked about it because you are wondering if the last 4 years were filled with memories of her every time he called your daughter’s name. When people are dating they talk about their likes and dislikes and share their dreams. If the relationship does not survive, that is no reason for the dreams to die with it or for the person to suddenly stop liking something. That is unreasonable to expect. Think back on your past relationships and the conversations you had with

Crazy Stupid Love Now this is what you call a perfect romantic comedy. The combination of romance and drama that is slickly written and superbly cast has made this film one of the top box office hits of the year. At forty-something, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the dream. Good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has cheated on him with co-worker David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon) and wants a divorce, his "perfect" life quickly unravels. Worse, in today's single world, Cal, who hasn't dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-cool. Now spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protégé to handsome, thirty-something player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). Taking pity on Cal, Jacob agrees to teach him about the art of seduction. However his first job is to take Cal shopping, outfitting him with an entirely new wardrobe and an unexpected friendship begins to blossom. Meanwhile Hannah (Emma Stone), a law student who had previously rejected Jacob’s advances, unexpectedly comes back into his life and the two soon find themselves in a relationship. Just to complicate things further, Cal’s 13 year-old son Robbie (Jonah Bobo) has a massive crush on his 17 year-old babysitter, Jessica (Analeigh Tipton). Unfortunately Jessica only has eyes for one man – Cal. Cal though is determined to win his wife back and so with the help of his kids they create a makeshift mini Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

LeAnn Rimes Finds Love, ‘Reel’ And Otherwise and you can see the growth ... that’s kind of where I am in my life, just taking a step farther and being better and better every time.” Working with screen veteran Reynolds helped that effort, Rimes says. “We had a great time together. He plays a bit of a pain in the butt, and this was the first time I’d ever met him and hung with him. I just adore him. He’s hysterical, he really is. It felt like we’d known each other for a long time. He’s been around and through everything, and I have great respect for him.” A former host of the competition Nashville Star, Rimes has been taking some gambles with her music, too. Her latest album, Lady & Gentlemen, is comprised of her cover versions of songs originally made famous by male country artists - from Waylon Jennings’ Good Hearted Woman to Kris Kristofferson’s Help Me Make It Through the Night. Vince Gill, whose When I Call Your Name also is represented, was one of Rimes’ co-producers on the release. “I really had a great time rediscovering my childhood in a way,” Rimes says of making the album, “and it was nice to have Vince’s perspective on the stuff he grew up on. Both of us have a vast knowledge of music in general, and we have great respect for classic country music. We pay homage to the originals, but we definitely tweaked each and every song to make it more modern and more my own.” Unveiled in late September, Lady & Gentlemen still is fairly new to the marketplace, so Rimes is glad Reel Love is appearing on a network with natural appeal to a country fan base. “It targets that audience,” she says, “and it does it so well. And I got a great chance to work with a classic Hollywood actor.”

Music remains her mainstay, but LeAnn Rimes says the occasional acting role is nice, too. The country singer has left the other profession largely to husband Eddie Cibrian, recently of NBC’s “The Playboy Club,” but she’s headlining a new TV movie for an appropriate outlet. Premiering Sunday, Nov. 13, the Country Music Television offering Reel Love casts her as an attorney who leaves her big-city life to return to her rural hometown and tend to her father (Burt Reynolds) upon learning he’s had a heart attack. He doesn’t need much tending, though: She arrives to find him already back on his feet and fishing for a giant bass that will help him land a world record, thus accounting for the “Reel” part of the film’s title. She readjusts so comfortably to the Southern surroundings, with the added attraction of a handsome newcomer (Shawn Roberts, “X-Men”), she gives consideration to staying longer. Perhaps permanently. But there’s still her guy back in the city (Jeff Roop, Heartland), whose sleek and sporty car she’s taken - and, unbeknownst to him, wrecked - on her trek home. His relatively casual take on their relationship makes her wonder if the two of them are more than what she terms “lawyers with benefits,” another factor in her ultimate decision. “I’m really proud of my work in it,” Rimes says of the Sweet Home Alabama – like movie. “I’m learning constantly, with every film I do. With an album or a film, if you can sit there and not cringe while watching or listening, 17

Riding For A Cause Since its creation, over the last four years, the BSAFE Cycling program—headed by cycling guru Chris Ghiorse—has taught over 1000 children and adults to ride. In order to keep the program in existence Ghiorse is taking on a mammoth task this weekend—after he helps the Highland Spring College Classic Series raise funds for the BVI Diabetics Association during Saturday’s Race For a Cause—he will Ride 500km for a Cause in 24 hours— to save his program. The ride begins at noon on Saturday and ends at the same time on Sunday. Chris said the program—now in its fourth year—had some hiccups with a funding shortfall and needs $50,000. “That’s how I’m trying to go forward, maybe with a lot of little donations and sponsorship, I can take care of some of that funding shortfall,” he said. “I believe I can ride that distance, obeying all the traffic laws. What I’m most worried about is the traffic lights – something you have to obey and follow – but it will considerably eat into my average speed having to come to a complete stop, so there will be challenges.” Chris, who will have some other riders with him including Thomas Layer form St. Thomas and Richard Morgan, needs to average 16-17 mph to complete the distance in 24 hours. “Near the end, there are quite a few riders interested in joining in during the last couple of hours,” he said. “To be honest, I’m gonna be shooting to hit the 500K mark within 23 hours so that some of the riders that want to come out, join in and support, can do some parade laps in the last 45 minutes to an hour.” Chris said despite the tough economic times, he’s been pleasantly surprised that the idea of getting on

Chris Ghiorse and company will ride for a cause in 24 hours

board for a few hundred dollars is appealing to a lot of companies that perhaps have employees that have benefitted from the BSAFE Program or just have been watching from afar. “I’m happy to say, the idea of being able to contribute amounts of $500—although to me as an individual that’s not a small amount—is more manageable for a business. Most people have been donating in the range from $10 to $100 and a few generous individuals have donated $500, so there has been a good response,” he said. “I must give special thanks to CCT Global Communications, VP Bank and Caribbean Alliance Insurance who have provided the backbone of funding to cover the costs.” Jamie Shultesis is also conducting a $2 fundraising raffle in which prizes will be given. Chris intends to have a follow up, indicating how far he rode and people who want to contribute still can do so. There’s a www.bsafe24.com website where persons can pledge and individuals can donate as little as $5 or a penny per kilometer which adds up to $5. 23
