This Week’s Feature Story
NPT Celebrates “Silver” Anniversary In Style Calypso night will bring a lively end to the day. The NPT is charged with conserving the territory’s most valuable resource, the beauty of its natural habitat. It began in 1961 and Sage Mountain became the BVI’s first National Park in 1964. Since then the Trust has grown to include 21 parks with over 1800 acres of protected area. The efforts of the Trust include the restoration of the flamingo population of Anegada, as well as spearheading the Moorings/Reef Protection Program to preserve the territory’s underwater paradise. However, it is headlining artists playing next weekend that we have all been waiting for to provide the exciting finale to the week’s activities. On Saturday, 26th November –UB40’s front man, Ali Campbell will take to the stage along with Arturo O’Farrill, and his famed “AfroCuban Jazz Orchestra.” Topping the bill on Sunday and bringing a fitting end to the celebrations is John Legend who will be joined by the Blue Essence Band and the HSLCC College Jazz ensemble. So head down to the QE11 Park and enjoy the amazing entertainment and support the Trust in their next fifty years of protecting our unique environment. — Jan Critchley

Not Just A “One Traffic Light” Island Anymore! As I drove past the newly installed set of traffic lights at Wickham’s Cay 2 for the first time I couldn’t help but smile to myself as I recalled my first visit here just over seven years ago and a comment made by one of my best friends. I was still studying in England at the time and was here for my wedding at which my best friend Nolan, also living in England at the time, was my best man. We were both taken aback by the natural beauty around us and talked about what it would be like to live here. His view was that despite all of this beauty, it was a bit too quiet for him and sarcastically added that, “he couldn’t see himself living in a place with one traffic light.” As was often the case with us, an argument ensued; me trying to point out to him the virtues of such a quiet lifestyle and him telling me how it would be impossible to give up all of the activities, especially nocturnal ones, he enjoyed in England. A lot has happened since that trip, I’m still happily married and living here now, Nolan is still living in England, and Tortola has a couple more sets of traffic lights. It might have been three more if the one at the roundabout in Road Town was kept, but to everyone’s relief, common sense prevailed and they were removed.
Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late edu-cator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
I think the addition of the lights along Waterfront Drive, and more recently at Wickham’s Cay 2, have been very useful in regulating the flow of traffic especially at peak times. I’m sure that it’s only a matter of time before motorists and pedestrians become fully accustomed to them and appreciate their usefulness if they haven’t already. Nolan hasn’t been back to the BVI since that time and even though we communicate quite regularly, I haven’t mentioned anything to him about traffic lights. I can’t wait to see his reaction or hear his excuse when he comes and finds that we have not only one but two more sets of traffic lights. And if he takes too long to come and visit, who knows how many sets we may have by then?

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
In Love With A Married Man Dear Koren, I am a lady in my thirties. I am in love with a married man who says his wife and him are estranged but still living together because of the financial agreement between them. He says she leaves the house constantly for hours, she does not wash or clean and the cooking is very minimal. He plans to leave her because he says she has a wicked heart even though she goes to church. He believes she cheated on him and does not know if he can forgive her. I know I should be very careful of this kind of relationship. Can you please give me some advice and advice him also of what he should do about his relationship. – Concerned
er woman in that manner and yet stays with her because of money? Do you think he will have any respect for you? Even if they are not getting along right now, is no cause for him to speak about her in that manner especially as he spoke vows to her at some point. So let’s just suppose he leaves her and marries you. Do you think he will change overnight and start being different? How certain are you that the pattern of infidelity and backbiting will not be manifested in your relationship? You have to try to be objective and look at the situation from all angles. Does this relationship make you happy, satisfied and wanting to be your best self or does it make you feel ashamed and guilty? Consider the kind of life you envisioned for yourself and the kind of reputation and character you want to develop and ensure that the actions you are taking now, supports that.
Dear Concerned, I cannot really advise your gentleman friend as he did not write to me and I don’t have the whole story; but what I would say, is that trying to maintain two relationships is difficult and also unfair to the women, so he should make a choice. Now, let’s talk about your situation. Maybe he genuinely cares for you, but countless men have strung women along for years with a story about staying with their wife for whatever reason. The ideal thing is for you to leave him alone until he is free. That’s the bottom line. How can you respect a man who talks about anoth-

The Smurfs The festival of the Blue Moon is about to begin, and things are going smoothly for The Smurfs, but Papa Smurf (Jonathan Winters) sees a vision of the future that is quite disturbing. The vision begins to play out in real life, as Clumsy Smurf (Anton Yelchin) inadvertently leads the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) to the Smurfs' secret village. As they scramble to get away from the bumbling wizard, Clumsy goes the wrong way. Papa, Smurfette, Brainy, Gutsy, and Grouchy follow after him, and they all stumble upon a mysterious portal that sucks them away to a different realm – Central Park, New York City. In a strange new "village" with Gargamel and his menacing cat Azrael hot on their heels, the Smurfs strug-
gle just to survive. That is, until they find themselves in the cozy apartment of young married couple Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Grace Winslow (Jayma Mays). Patrick is a clean cut marketing executive for the New York City based cosmetics company Anjelou, and kind and optimistic Grace is pregnant with their first child. When they find that they have some little blue visitors, Patrick and Grace, well more so Grace, accept the Smurfs and even befriend them. Despite the fact that Patrick's life is turned upside down and his big chance to succeed at work is put in grave jeopardy, he can't turn his back on his new, true blue friends. He does his best to help them escape Gargamel and get the tools and potions they need to open a portal back home, but in the end, it may be that the Smurfs have helped him even more than he helped them. A story of courage, friendship and faith The Smurfs will make a great holiday stocking stuffer for the kids this yearit will be out on DVD Dec 2nd.

Tackling the BVI Half Marathon For the first five years of its life, the Deloite/OGIER BVI Half Marathon supported by Dasani, has seen a record performance every year. This was capped by the scintillating run of one Local runners will be challenged by 10 from St. Thomas on Saturday hour, 07 minutes and 38 seconds by Michael Aish during last year’s event that was run in conjunction with the OECS Half Marathon. The first time this event was run—fromThe Jolly Roger to Road Town—the winning time was 1 hour, 34 minutes and 40 seconds, over the 13.1 miles distance. Who will come out of the woodwork this year and lower the mark while collecting the record breaking $500 prize in addition to the winner’s purse? Deloite and OGIER’s support over the years, has seen the growth of the event with a regional foray last year when it turned 5 years old. This year, Dasani, through Road Town Wholesale, has been added to the sponsorship lineup. From all indications—unless some unknown runner registers by 7 pm on Friday afternoon—the pre registration line up, has the event shaping up as a BVI vs USVI race, as at least 10 or more than 40 runners who have pre-registered hails from St. Thomas. “While we will not have participants from OECS countries as we did last year, we are expecting an even field of competitors,” BVI Athletics Association Road Racing Director Kay Reddy said. “Thomas “Iron Man” Layer, who completed in Iron Man Panama last week, is
coming off riding 500km on Tortola on Sunday in a effort to raise funds for the BSAFE program and will be in his third grueling event in three weeks. Maril Reuber will also compete for the men’s title.” Reddy said that USVI Team Veuve, comprising Joy Bryan-Silva and Angela Berry, are guaranteed to bring sparkle and bubbly to the race. Reddy said that Kathy Merani who recently completed the BVI Olympic distance triathlon Steelman Triathlon event last month, as well as Christine Thomas, Lisa Parfitt and Tiarra Lindemann-Kappel complete the USVI friends who have pre-registered. Adrian Dale—the top local runner last year—and Zebalon McLean will duke it out along with Emrol Amsterdam and Curvin Andrews among others. Meriel Steadman, Rachel McDonald and Maria Mays will seek to keep the title out of the St. Thomas runners hands. Registration will be at the Tortola Sports Club in Pasea Estate from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m., on Friday. Race registration fee is $45. There is no registration on the morning of the race. The winners will walk away with $300 in the male and female divisions, $200 respectively for second and $150 for third. The first male and female masters over 45 will collect $100, with another $100 going to the oldest male and female finishers. There’s also a $500 prize for breaking the course record of 1 hour, 07 minutes and 38 seconds established last year. The race which starts and ends at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, loops out to the Port Purcell Roundabout, before heading to the turnaround in Pockwood Pond, and return. 19
