CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS, HORSE RACING, NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTIES & MUCH MORE!
This Week’s Feature Story
Headliners and Occupiers for New Years Private jets discretely fly in and deposit their highend clientele at the BVI airport. Mega yachts vie with sailboats for best anchorage sites in Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke. Most BVIslanders know what the season is – Old Year’s Night at Foxy’s and the “Lucky 2013 “ weekend event with headliners Shaggy and Taurus Riley. New Year festivities begin early on Saturday December 29 with Foxy’s signature Caribbean barbeque at 6:30 pm. The BVIs own Final Faze from Virgin Gorda warms up the evening at the Outback followed by rocking reggae artist, Shaggy and Friends. The JamaicanAmerican singer and rapper came to the reggae forefront when his album Bombastic won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album of the Year in 1996. In 2000 his album Hot Shot went Platinum with hit singles It Wasn’t Me and Angel. The count down for the New Year begins on Monday, December 31, beginning with local favorite Showtime Band. Hot on their heels will be VI “rockalypso pioneers,” West Lindy, who churn out a calypso-infused rock sound. Topping the bill for Old Year’s Night is reggae sensation Taurus Riley, son of veteran reggae singer Jimmy Riley. Riley’s hit album included breakout hit, Contagious as well as Start Anew and Good Girl Gone Bad. As always, Foxy’s will provide an elegant New Year
dinner at the Upper Crust and a bbq buffet on the beach. “Occupy Trellis Bay” if you want to celebrate the end of the old year and the beginning of the new along with a party-going throng of yachtsmen, visiting landlubbers and locals. Located off Tortola’s eastern end on Beef Island, Trellis Bay’s annual New Year’s celebration is a one of a kind event. Themed, “The Masked Ball for Almost All (99%), this occupy movement’s agenda is all about fun. The world famous Fireballs, sculpted by artist Aragorn Dick Read, will be lit at the water’s edge at midnight along with the Burning Man – illuminating the bay along with a fireworks display. In addition there will be the carnival-style moves of the colorful stilt-walking mocko jumbies, music by the Razor Blades fungi band and steel band sounds by the renowned Shooting Stars. With a West Indian buffet and beachside bars serving a steady stream of beverages you won’t go hungry or thirsty. So join the 99% for the people’s party and a very special new years event. – Jane Bakewell

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Chronic AskComplainer Koren Dear Koren, I don’t see many men writing into your column, but just so you know, some of us read it weekly. I am dating a very nice woman for months now and I’m considering her as a life partner. The biggest problem I have is that she is a chronic complainer. She would take an hour to complain about work, then she moves on to how people read the news and then it’s her ex-husband who she is divorced from 5 years now and it goes on and on. What do I do? I don’t know if I could live with this. –PAP
or stealing or running around, but you have to know what your limits are. If you decide to try to make it work, then you can do any of three things: Set an example for her to follow. Try to be optimistic. When people spend a lot of time together, sometimes they pick up each other’s patterns of interaction and behavior. Bring to her attention how she comes across. Ask her what she can do differently to change her perspective. This way, she learns to hear herself and to take responsibility for her own happiness. Accept what is. If this is the woman you are in love with and your job is to listen and be a sounding board, then be the best sounding board this world has ever seen and practice problem solving techniques together. A chronic complainer can be irritating but when we practice unconditional love, we learn to accept people for who they are. We learn to look beyond some flaws and treat people the way we want to be treated, while helping them to be better persons in a manner of their choosing.
Dear PAP, Thanks for being a dedicated reader of the column. I have heard many people express that someone would be perfect for them, if only they didn’t have one particular fault. As you know, none of us are perfect and you are on the right path when you ask yourself, “Is this something I can live with”? The good news is, you have made your observations early so you know what you would be getting into. We can’t change others, so if you will constantly nag or pressure her to be who you want, then leave her alone, as you will both be miserable. If you think that since she accepts you with your bad habits, you can overlook hers, then it is worth giving it a go. Someone might say complaining is not as bad as being dishonest

Gone but not forgotten 2012: Griffith, Clark, Houston, more long” salute to you, Dick. Larry Hagman: The truly unfortunate irony of the veteran actor’s recent death is that he was just starting his second round of Dallas success as master schemer J.R. Ewing. He’ll also be long recalled fondly for I Dream of Jeannie. Mike Wallace: His tenacious reporting method had its detractors — especially those who were his targets — but the 60 Minutes staple maintained his truly iconic style. Whitney Houston: Music and movies were her mainstays, but the singular singer also made her TV mark on specials, award shows and an update of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Ernest Borgnine: Alternately brutal and likable on the big screen, the Oscar winner milked his more amiable side for his runs in such series as McHale’s Navy and Airwolf — and also for the voice of Mermaid Man on SpongeBob SquarePants. Sherman Hemsley: Certainly “movin’ on up” when he landed an All in the Family spinoff, this stage veteran made George Jefferson the very definition of “feisty.” Chad Everett: The actor’s literal movie-star looks translated well to the series Medical Center and numerous guest appearances including Castle.
As a new year dawns, a tribute to those we’ve lost in the year now ending is merited ... and in 2012, those milestones have encompassed some of the most popular personalities in television history. Andy Griffith: The actor-producer who put Mayberry on the map forever will be remembered as one of television’s most genial personalities, also extending to his run as wily lawyer Matlock. Dick Clark: The number of music stars who owe at least part of their success to the “American Bandstand” maestro is incalculable. Thanks to him, people also enjoy New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, receive American Music Awards and have a greater appreciation of bloopers. Here’s a “so

A Few Positive Thoughts for 2013 As we approach the New Year, it is generally a time we take stock of all our hopes and aspirations of the previous year and make a mental accounting. Did we accomplish the goals we set for ourselves? We seem to have a very polarized love – hate relationship with the dreaded New Year’s resolutions. It’s like that diet we know we should be on - that gorgeous new body floats in our mind, but oh the discipline and making changes to get there, couldn’t we just skip over that? But as Alexander Pope, the oft-quoted poet writes in An Essay on Man, “Hope springs eternal in the human breast” (An Essay on Man). There is just something about entering a New Year, a clean slate to write our lives on. We just can’t help thinking the New Year gives us new opportunities, definitely new challenges and yet new choices to be made in how we handle those life hurdles. So this year instead of making New Year’s resolutions that may have a shelf life of 30 days at most, why not incorporate a few positive thoughts that might steer you in a direction of real change. For this, I lift a few tips for a positive New Year from one of the pioneers in the positive thinking movement, Norman Vincent Peale, whose 1952 classic The Power of Positive Thinking is still being published today with over five million books sold worldwide. Many have copied his maxims into their own form of up – beat psychology, but the core principles remain. These include staying positive, expressing grati-

tude and believing everything happens for a reason. Here are a few other thoughts that might steer the rudder of your mind away from the shoals of negativity and discouragement. Take a morning walk of gratitude mentally listing what you have to be thankful for. Instead of being disappointed about where you are, be encouraged that you are not where you used to be and think optimistically about where you are going. Focus on learning, loving, growing and serving. Most of these ventures take you out of yourself and expand your horizons through giving. Live your life with energy, enthusiasm and empathy, always aware of those who are hurting around you. And finally smile and laugh more. They are natural anti-depressants. Just a slight mental shift towards the positive might alter how you perceive things in 2013. In the words of Norman Vincent Peale, “What the mind can conceive and believe, and the heart desire, you can achieve.”

New Year’s Eve A star–studded cast features in this eventful movie about New Year's Eve in New York city. The film follows a similar formula as Valentine‘s Day, in that it is a compilation of many people’s lives and how the day affects them in very different ways. So, in a nutshell and without giving away any spoilers, Kim (Sarah JessicaParker) is feeling it hard to come to terms with the fact that her daughter is growing up and wanting to head out with friends to enjoy the celebrations. Claire (Hilary Swank) is in charge of the city's annual tradition – the ball drop on Times Square which has its challenges, but helps her realize what is

Expect live music at the bandstand and the Christmas Village will have plenty of food and drinks on sale. There will also be a traditional Christmas dinner offered at this idyllic setting by the sea. Blu Restaurant is featuring a Christmas in Paradise late night party beginning at 11pm with a versatile DJ lineup and their infamous “Jello shots.”
There are plenty of musical events to get you into the celebratory spirit of the holidays beginning with an appearance by Quito at Bamboushay Lounge on December 22. The Christmas Eve parties and elegant dinners follow and you may want to start at Blu Restaurant in East End for their Jolly Rancher Edition party on December 24th beginning at 11pm with DJ Poppy Pops and others keeping the tunes going through the night. The mellow sounds of guitarist Rueben Chinnery will accompany a sumptuous Christmas Eve menu at Bananakeet Café. Sebastians on the Beach is rolling out their new menu created by Chef Davide Pugliese and is sure to include some holiday specials.
New Year’s Eve Sailing out of the old into the New Year, there is no lack of venues island-wide to celebrate the occasion. Revellers who like theme parties should head on down to the “Old Year’s Knight – It’s Gonna Get Medieval” party at the Last Resort. Music, madness and mead are promised along with a Medieval-themed banquet. Champagne, fireworks at midnight and live music with the Last Resort band should guarantee a fun night. Enjoy A Pusser’s New Year’s Eve at West End at Pusser’s Landing or at Charlie T’s in Fat Hogs Bay. A special 4-course dinner is offered at $39 and includes Champagne at midnight, party favors and DJ music through the midnight hour. Christmas/New Year’s Triple Issue
Horse Racing - A Boxing Day Must One of the highlights of the Christmas season in the British Virgin Islands is not the gift giving, the many holiday parties which are as pervasive as guavaberry wine, but the Boxing Day Horse Races at the Ellis Thomas Downs. Horseracing has been described by some, as the most exciting two minutes in sport, and it’s no different here in the BVI where enthusiasm for horseracing rivals that of most any other sport. Horseracing in the BVI goes back to the 1800s and initially was part of the early Emancipation celebrations, which also included church services and community picnics. At one time races were run on the streets of Road Town around Lower Estate – not hard to imagine in a time when there were no cars and the streets
