This Week’s Feature Story

Pop Music Lecture Benefits Students Put Friday, February 1st at HLSCC auditorium on your calendar as long-time Tortola resident Terry Ellis, who signed on some of the great hit groups out of England in the 60s, 70s, and 80s will be giving a fascinating overview of his life among some of the musical giants of the “Baby-boomer” generation such as: Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Procol Harum, David Bowie, and Pat Benatar. This will be a chance to hear how the co-founder of Chrysalis Records navigated the rollercoaster music business, parlaying it into a successful career. The roots of Chrysalis records goes back to 1967 when two English lads in their early twenties from West London, Terry and his partner Chris Wright had the audacity (and vision) to believe they could form their own record label and promote pop music bands. Because of their success promoting groups like Cat Stevens, Jethro Tull, and Procol Harum, Chrysalis entered into a licensing deal with Island Records for distribution. The rest is the legend of music history as the songs from these groups hopped the ocean and became part of the

sweep of pop and rock in the US “times are a changin’” turbulent 60s. The 80s was the most successful of all for the label, as the high profile bands now included Billy Idol, Pat Benatar, new-wavers Blondie as well as top 40 hit producers like Huey Lewis and the News. After an amazing ride Terry sold out his half of the record company in 1985. Terry was looking for a group at the college he could lend his support and the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society caught his eye. Richard Georges, an English lecturer at the college and a faculty advisor for the BVI chapter explained, “Terry saw the benefits the Honors Society brings to the students. Many of our students because of their inclusion in the Honors program receive full scholarships at prestigious colleges in the US.” The goal is to use the funds raised to assist in expenses for the students to attend regional and international conventions. A worthy cause and a great lecture not–to-be-missed, the program starts at 7pm and tickets are $10 at the door or in advance at the college library and outlets in town. – Jane Bakewell

Jack Reacher Tom Cruise stars as the title character in Jack Reacher, an adaptation of Lee Child's novel One Shot. Reacher is a former military police officer who's enlisted to find a sniper who fired six shots into a crowd, killing five people. The film tells the story of a former Army Military Police officer, who since leaving the army has spent his time drifting around the United States with nothing to tie him down and no way of tracking him. One day, Reacher is watching TV and learns that James Barr (Joseph Sikora), a former Army Infantry sniper, has been arrested on suspicion of shooting a group of seemingly unconnected strangers just going about their business. At the same time that Reacher is deciding to travel to the city due to his military history with Barr, Barr is attacked while being transported by police and shortly before falling into a coma makes one request: “Find me Jack Reacher.” When Reacher turns up on the scene, the prosecutor Rodin (Richard Jenkins) and police investigator Emerson (David Oyelowo) assume he must be there to help Barr, but they soon learn he is in fact there to ensure

the prosecution of Barr due to some act that he did while serving in the army. However, once Reacher starts looking at the evidence, he begins to question how one of the best snipers he knows managed to miss one of his shots and be caught in what looks like such an open-shut case. Reacher teams up with Barr’s lawyer Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), who also happens to be the prosecutor’s daughter, to try and find out what really happened that day.

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Tired of the Same Routine

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, I am tired and my life is not going well. I work from 8 to 5 and then go home and do homework with my children, cook, clean and barely get into bed for a few hours rest before the cycle starts all over again on the next day. I don’t have a husband to help me. Weekends it is church and cleaning and I do get a break, but I feel like life is just passing me by. What would you advise me to do? –Reader

Otherwise you will wake up one day and wonder where your life went. You can care for others and still make time for you. If you don’t take care of yourself, then you have nothing to give. Perhaps a trusted family member can keep the kids on weekends for you to have some “you” time to do fun enjoyable things with friends or alone. While I am not minimizing your very real concerns, it is also helpful for us to develop a sense of gratitude. Be thankful for the fact that you have a job, you have children, you belong to a church family and hopefully you find some joy and peace in your worship experience. So sit down this weekend and plan a schedule and ensure you include some YOU time. Life is a gift and tomorrow is not guaranteed, so you must make the most of today. Count your blessings and focus on what is meaningful and special and worthwhile and your life will be much more fulfilling.

Dear Reader, You need to pause for a while and take a deep breath. It sounds like you are physically, mentally and emotionally overwhelmed. You need to take your life back; you need to have some control over your time and live in a way that brings you satisfaction. Perhaps the children can help with simple chores like keeping their rooms clean or putting out garbage. Cooking can be done for 2 days at a time and there are many meals that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less. On the weekends, you can prepare enough clothes for the week and do your major cleaning so that in the week you have less to do. Plan to make better use of your time. If you can afford a housekeeper, then consider it. If you have to create a schedule, then do that. No matter how many things we have to do, we must find time for relaxation and recreation.

The Medusa Bush and a Blue Tailed Skink new species including a small skink like lizard with a bluish tail (the Mabuya sp), and a rare orchid (Psychilis macconnelliae) found dangling from a newly excavated road on Virgin Gorda. The group has now turned its attention to Anegada. Whenever I’ve visited Anegada I have been impressed with its stark scrub-like beauty. The large salt ponds in the island’s interior are well-known for their reintroduced flamingo population, but it seems thousands of migrating shorebirds and waterfowl make the ponds an annual stopover in the early fall and spring. The group is taking note of work to protect the endangered Anegada iguana, and are recording historical structures such as the island’s oldest buildings and its unique conch islands which date to the time of the early Amerindian settlements. There are always new things to discover, and recently they came across a thorny new plant species, appropriately nicknamed the Medusa Bush. The researchers are also asking for the assistance of Anegada’s residents. They have distributed a questionnaire which asks their opinion on a number of subjects including impressions of the environment; the main environmental challenges affecting the community; areas of historic and natural interest that may need further protection and preferred options for future development. By sending in old photographs, reviewing draft chapters of the profile and providing feedback, they will be able to contribute to the report in other ways as well. It is an approach that would have pleased Dr. Towle.

I first met Dr. Edward Towle when the office for his recently formed organization, the Island Resources Foundation was located in a small building on the East End of St. Thomas. I was there to research a story on his fledgling organization, which assists small island states in the protection of their environments, and the interview sparked my life long interest in environmental subjects. Although the IRF focuses on islands throughout the Caribbean, in recent years much of their research has centered on the BVI where they have set up an office and library. The next time I met Dr. Towle was in Road Town in 2006. The compact office on Main Street was lined with bookshelves brimming over with reports and material collected by the organization over the previous 25 years – a treasure trove of data on islands from around the world. At the time, IRF was in the midst of a management study for Sandy Cay then owned by philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller who was soon to transfer the island to the National Parks Trust. Erudite and committed, Dr. Towle was always a pleasure to talk to, a font of knowledge on islands and their fragile ecosystems. Dr. Towle has since passed away, but his work has continued, carried on by his wife Judith and a dedicated group of researchers and environmentalists. In recent years, the group has written environmental profiles of Jost Van Dyke (in conjunction with the Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society) and one on Virgin Gorda. Researchers routinely trudge up steep slopes, along precipitous cliffs and through the islands’ marshes, salt ponds and dense undergrowth in search of bats, snakes and rare plants. During the course of their work the team has discovered several 13

Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin Reflect on end of 30 Rock On Thursday, Jan. 31, one of TV’s all-time best comedies signs off when NBC’s 30 Rock ends after seven seasons, 14 Emmys and countless laughs. The day after finishing their last scenes, the show’s stars, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, spoke separately with Zap2it.com. Fey reflected on her character, Liz Lemon, the smart, strident head writer on a network show. Baldwin spoke about his character, Jack Donaghy, the excessively confident network executive. What follows is a condensed version of the interviews. Q: What cracked you up on set? Baldwin: When we would do the read-through — I guess what you think is funny is probably very personal — Jane (Krakowski) would sit to my left and Tina to my right at the table reads. We would read scripts (out loud to listen to the rhythm of them), and Jane’s take on that vain, horny actress like Ginger from “Gilligan’s Island” meets someone from “Mean Girls,” someone really scheming and out for themselves and ditsy — you just don’t think people can make that fresh again, and Jane did. Very few people crack me up as much as Jane did. Fey: I always had a lot of fun shooting with Tracy Morgan and Jack McBrayer together. We just wrapped for the series last night. There was a delay, and as happens every time in seven years, it ended up with Tracy singing songs from “Thriller” — the same three Michael Jackson songs so many times. Last night it turned into an impromptu break dance party. I didn’t hit the floor, but I did take my turn. I was more poppin’ and lockin’. Q: What did you want to happen to Jack that didn’t? Baldwin: I can’t say there is one thing. I pitched ideas to them of how I wanted it to end. One idea was that I died — finally had this gigantic heart attack from

all my failed ambitions, and my ghost talks to Lemon at the end. The funniest idea was to ask my own ex-wife (actress Kim Basinger) to come on the show. They wanted her to come on to play Kenneth’s stepmother, and I marry Kim on the show, and Kenneth becomes my stepson. You realize the level of crazy (in the writers room). Q: What were some of your favorite Liz Lemon moments? Fey: She got married a few weeks ago, and she wore a Princess Leia outfit. That was one. And there was, in Season 4, a flashback to a phone sex ad commercial Liz had done in the ’90s, and a really bad haircut, before Invisaligns. Q: Where do you see Liz in five years? Fey: I know some things that happen to Liz; I think she will be working in New York and happy in her life. Q: Would you do a reunion? Baldwin: I don’t think anybody wants that, actually, because I don’t know what that could be. They are going to end this in a really great way. I don’t think anybody would conceive of that. The way they end this, and literally the final frames are very perfect, I wouldn’t say I felt really good. I felt that we did the best we could in terms of wrapping it up. I certainly could have gone a little longer. No sooner did I sign a deal with them to do a seventh and eighth season, and they canceled the show. Fey: At this point, I have no idea. I know I certainly care about those characters a lot. If you could do it in a way that it was one one-hour special. I think it would be a series of erotic novels. 15

Empowering Women in Football Nothing happens before its time. After almost 40 years of existence, women in the territory are being empowered in football through a Women’s Football Coaching course that began on Monday and runs through the weekend, including a Girls Football Festival on Saturday. That is expected to be followed by a Women’s 11-A-Side Football League – a first in Association history. Basketball which has existed almost 40 years—in the Territory, is the lone sport that doesn’t have a women’s league although it was among the first to have a woman as president and women officials in an administrative capacity. Course Director Andrea Rosenbaugh said FIFA is committed to developing women’s football – not only on the field but off the field as well. “We want to see the girls on the field competing but when their careers on the field finishes, we also want to see them involved in administrative positions, where they are making decisions as coaches, and referees, so that they can make a career in football and that is FIFA’s mission,” she said. She congratulated the BVI Football Association on taking the initiative. As she pointed out the idea came from the BVIFA and not FIFA for the course that began with 30 participants, 11 of whom are women. “It’s a very significant step for Football here in the BVI,” Association President Andy Bickerton said, noting that the youth program his organization runs targeting 5-18 year olds has expanded from 550 participants in 2012 to over 770 this year. “Over one third of those participants are female, so it’s obviously logical that we should be putting a lot of emphasis on ladies

Coaches with instructor Andrea Resenbaugh

football here in the BVI. But, it isn’t just about football. It’s about keeping our young people fit, getting them organized in team situations where they have to work together and become better citizens.” Bickerton noted that 11 females on the course represents 38%, which reflects the breakdown of females seen in the youth program. Bickerton said FIFA has commitment to the promotion of ladies football and they are also putting a lot of resources and equipment behind it. “All of the clothing for the course, equipment for the Girls Festival and the ladies teams in the 11-A–Side league—are all provided by FIFA,” Bickerton noted. “You can see we have had wonderful support from our governing body, so it’s up to us to make good use of that and develop this firm grounding for women’s football here.” Sports Minister Hon. Myron Walwyn, congratulated the BVIFA on the initiative. “I don’t’ think it’s by design but most of the sports we have are male dominated,” he observed. “I’m very pleased to see the effort and it shows that we are growing as a community and that things are being done that include both genders.” 17
