Dear Koren, I live in an apartment where I’m comfortable and able to save. Everyone says that being a homeowner is better, so I got a plan and an estimate done for a small two bedroom concrete house. Lo and behold when I went to talk to the bank and found out the approximate cost to pay for that house and land too, it is almost twice what I am paying now. Why is it so important to own a house, if my standard of living will drop?

The downside is as you discovered, the mortgage might be high; then you have to think about insurance, maintenance and repairs and if you lose your job or want to relocate, you have to consider how to continue the payments and it is not very easy to get houses sold these days.

If you prefer to rent and use your money for other things, don’t let anyone make you feel that anything is wrong with that. A person has a right to make a choice about their life that brings them the greatest satisfaction. If you prefer to spend on education, entertainment, travel and all that, then go for it. Just ensure that you are aware of the opportunity cost (what you are giving up) for whatever decision you make.

Think about it and talk with someone else who knows you well and has your best interest at heart. It is a major decision and worth serious consideration.

Dear Flustered, That is a very good question. For every decision that we make, we have to consider the pros and cons.

We also have to bear in mind, that what is suitable for one person might not be suitable for another. Before you make such a decision, you must identify what your goals and values are? Is material accumulation important to you or do you prefer to think about your day to day lifestyle? Are you planning to have a family? Will your income change at some point? There are many things to consider.

Owning a home is good because it is yours and if you have children, it is a good inheritance to leave for them. Also, the land on which the house is built can increase in value, so that after a few years, the property can be worth more. You can also decorate,

The Art Of Limin - The Limin’ Times Turns 25!

The Limin Times, the little magazine that packs big information on what to do and where to go in the BVI, has turned 25. Like an adolescent turning 16, a college student hitting 21 or the young professional experiencing that “OMG” moment – I’m going to be 40! The Limin Times’ 25th birthday is a milestone worth celebrating.

As a long time member of the Island Publishing team I have watched the Limin Times’ evolve over the years and am happy to have been a part of its ongoing development. The weekly magazine began its existence at Island Publishing Services in 1987 as a black and white tv guide. In those days it was easy to publish all the television listings because there were so few channels. We soon included events and happenings around the islands, but these too were far and few between 25 years ago.

The magazine went color when Caribbean Printing purchased its color digital press in 2003. It was a natural fit. It upgraded the magazine’s quality and brought life to the photos that we ran and punch to the ads. For the first 20 or so years, Paul Backshall was the magazine’s publisher and contributed the popular “That’s Life” column, which highlighted vignettes from his life, along with his travels and a few island foibles. Often “That’s Life” featured his dog Milly. Starting her columns with “Hi, this is Millie” she voiced many a pithy opinion on the comings and goings of the Backshall household.

When Paul retired a few years ago, I became publisher and “That’s Life” evolved to “Island Life.” The column now features a rotating roster of staff and guest columnists who add varying takes on life on the 25th Anniversary Edition

rock. The far ranging subjects have included Road Town traffic jams, the green flash, the Queen and a recent one on the rare cauliflower jellyfish. Another tireless contributor is Dean Greenaway who keeps his readers up-to-date on the world of sports, often emailing his column from exotic locales in Asia, or South America where a sports meet was being held.

Running a weekly magazine in the tropics isn’t always smooth sailing. If the press goes down, we carry on by using alternative equipment. The magazine’s associate editor, Arlena St. Hilaire keeps on an even keel no matter what the adversity, whether it’s a computer glitch or a missing ad. Writer and Editorial Assistant Jan Critchley, who writes the “What’s Happening” section, along with “In The LimeLight” and other features, always manages to find engaging subjects even on a “slow news” week.

The word “lime” is the epitome of the Virgin Islands lifestyle – or at least in theory. The Dictionary of the Virgin Islands English Creole defines “lime” as “to hang around idly” or go out on the town, while the Urban Dictionary defines “limin” as “hanging out or chillin, even partying.” The BVI is a busier place these days, but hopefully we will never lose the art of limin.

The Five-Year Engagement Exactly one year after Tom Solomon (Jason Segel) met Violet Barnes (Emily Blunt), he decides to surprise her with a ring. Tom’s plan is simple, as they head out to a New Years Eve party, he fakes a reason to drop by work. The staff patio at the über-trendy Birch, with its view of San Francisco’s Bay Bridge, is the perfect place to pop the question. Tom is nervous, but the candles are lit, the champagne is chilled and his best friend, Alex (Chris Pratt) is in on the secret. It is as romantic as can be, and of course, Voilet says “yes.”

Tom and Violet are destined for happily ever after.

As a sous chef at Birch, Tom is at the apex of his cooking career and ripe for a promotion. Academia is Violet’s life, and she’s close to getting a post-doctoral assignment in social psychology at Berkeley.

Finding the perfect wedding venue is a headache, but much more painful is Violet’s rejection by her dream school. When the University of Michigan beckons, she’s conflicted. However, Tom convinces her to go for it and that he can cook in Michigan for two years, they’ll just have to postpone the wedding for a while.

In Ann Arbor, Violet thrives under the tutelage of brilliant faculty advisor Winton (Rhys Ifans). Left with too much time on his hands, Tom tries to settle into Michigan life and gets a job at Zingerman’s Deli, a local institution and a far cry from the fine dining he is used to. He bonds with his co-worker Tarquin (Brian Posehn) and takes up hunting at the behest of another faculty spouse, Bill (Chris Parnell).

Emily’s Thrown For A Loop as ‘Revenge’ Comes Roaring Back Revenge — which begins its second season Sunday, Sept. 30, on ABC — hooked an enthusiastic fan base in Season 1 with its taut storytelling and stunning surprises.

And every now and then, the show’s writers came up with a stunning revelation that knocked even the show’s star, Emily VanCamp, for a loop. In this case, it was discovering that Emily’s mother is alive.

“Going into Season 2, this is proving to be Emily’s greatest challenge yet,” she says. “You see her unraveling a little bit. Emily’s determination to find her mother becomes unhealthy, obsessive and really dangerous.”

That just adds one more layer to the staggeringly complex role VanCamp has been entrusted with: Emily Thorne, born Amanda Clarke, who has returned to her old hometown to wreak vengeance on the people who conspired to destroy her beloved and innocent father, David.

“I have so many journals and binders filled with notes just trying to keep track of different things, and my scripts have scribbles all over them,” VanCamp says. “This is a very difficult show to keep up with. I’m playing scenes where I have to mask all this internal stuff that’s going on.”

This season, it gets even more complicated, as Emily meets her mother (played by new cast member Jennifer Jason Leigh) whom she hasn’t seen since she was 4 or 5. “I absolutely love the exploration of that mother-daughter relationship,” VanCamp says. “It’s

almost as if Emily is looking into a mirror when we see that relationship, and she starts to wonder whether she is developing the same mental disorders as her mother. It’s just a very different place to see Emily in, because she normally isn’t nearly this vulnerable.”

Her vulnerability is further enhanced this season by the introduction of a new character played by British actor Barry Sloane.

“He’s a mysterious romantic interest from Emily’s past when she was in Japan,” series creator and executive producer Mike Kelley explains. “The character is called Aiden, and I think the audience is going to fall in love with him. He’s sort of a Daniel Craig-ish character.

There’s just a lot of passion and history and drama between Emily and Aiden.”

“In Aiden, Emily finally has someone who can match her, who has the same set of skills as her and understands her,” VanCamp adds. “You see how he betrayed her, and now he’s coming back to try to be there for her. It’s a different Emily this season, in that she becomes a little scattered, which is unlike her.”

Every now and then, Kelley admits, he wishes ABC would stop marketing Revenge as a “guilty pleasure.”

“I like to call it a suspense drama,” he says. “We try to aim for sophistication. It’s certainly a very challenging show to plot. It’s one of the most complicated things I’ve ever attempted, so we like to be recognized for those effects. But I think (ABC wants) to make sure the audiences feel like they can connect to the show.

I’m just glad we’re being talked about.”

Kelley will confirm that Madeleine Stowe’s character, Victoria Grayson, will return this season, but he won’t say how.

Kicking Off With A Knockout Sports have a way with jargon and colorful descriptive analysis of action, triumph and failure.

Terminology can be both objective, subjective and ambiguous. For example, usually when I hear the word “knockout” I immediately think of someone’s premature end of competition. Sometimes it could be the termination of a sporting event or someone literally getting knocked out by Mike Tyson – no more competition.

But on the other hand, while I’m not a football guy, I’ve noticed that they start off competitions with a ‘knockout’ tournament. Wait. Does it end before it really starts?

I guess you’d call it ‘pre-season’ when you start the league off with a knockout tournament. Surely, that’s going to be my question when I have my next football interview. Why do you knockout at the start instead of the end?

But Sunday afternoon at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, the BVI Football Association 2012 season kicks off in honor of its former Executive Committee member Wendol “Poto” Williams, as 12 teams compete for the cup named in his honor – in, of course, a knockout tournament.

Williams, two years ago, succumbed in his sleep en route to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

“Poto was one of our very, very best defensive players on the BVI national team and after he retired, he became an Executive Member, so we decided to have this tournament in his honor,” BVIFA Vice President and Competition Director Aubrey “Rakie” Liburd said. “One of his daughters is playing football, so she will be doing something during the opening of

the tournament.”

Three matches involving six of 12 teams, will lead off the chase for the Caribbean Cellars Wendol “Poto” Williams Knockout Football action tacking center stage Cup. The competition runs through October 14 and will be followed by the Terry Evans Cup, before the 2012-13 National League swings into full action.

A brief opening ceremony is set for 3:15 p.m., before VG United and defending champions Ball Stars face off at 3:30 p.m. Lucian Stars and the Panthers will follow and the day concludes with Wolues and Haitian Stars. Rebels FC and One Love will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

“We’re looking for a lot of high talented, skill ball playing in both the Wendol “Poto” Williams and Terry Evans Cups,” said Liburd.

Liburd said the Terry Evans Cup competition that follows Williams’ tournament, will have a slightly different format. He said the tournament which was previously held in the spring, was moved to coincide with the league.

“We want to have continual football, then have the youth program early in the spring,” Liburd noted.

“So for that purpose it was moved. Therefore, activities begin with the Wendol “Poto” Williams Cup, the Terry Evans Cup and the National League.”

So, as I wait for the National League to begin, I’ll be keeping an eye on all who get knocked out.
