This Week’s Feature Story
Musical Talent in a Teen Local singer Josef George made his debut at Sir Rupert Briercliff Hall, as the opening act for Gospel singer Bridget Blucher. The surprising fact was that he was only four–years–old at the time! By the age of 11, the young musical prodigy had recorded his first single Tru 2U from his family home studio and the song was getting a lot of airplay on BVI radio stations. In the expanse of the next six years, the self-taught musician has wowed ardent fans in the BVI and the US with his mellow blend of soft R & B and Pop with his own unique sound. Josef grew up in the church, where he first started playing drums, later he taught himself piano, guitar, saxophone and percussion instruments. “I noticed that I had talent, many people encouraged me and I realized this gift of playing by ear was something that God blessed me with,” he said. Josef has many artists that have influenced him, although his first impression was from the “old school music,” including the songs of Stevie Wonder and James Brown. Next came the music videos; High School Sweetheart followed by Magic, where he got a chance to express himself creatively, not just in song but also in choreography. Crooning next to his “romantic obsession” (also the name of his Promo CD) Josef walks

beside her smiling and flirting, throwing in a Michael Jackson spin without losing a beat, and sings of how she has him hooked. At 17, Josef is a natural performer and his relaxed smooth style matches his music. His most recent music video based on his hit single Can’t Get Away is a visual travelogue of the BVI, shot from the bow of a catamaran and emphasizes his VI cultural roots with Reggae guitar rhythms. His concerts in the BVI include opening for UB40 in the 2011 National Parks Trust concert and also as a solo performer in the 2012 BVI Music Fest. Josef’s future plans include finishing high school and then possibly touring with some big names in Hip Hop and Pop. For the talented young performer this aspiration is certainly not out of his reach. Stay tuned for the BVIs next musical ambassador, Josef George. Jane Bakewell

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
ThisAsk Is MyKoren Story Is the life you are living really yours or is it the life of someone else? You will never be truly fulfilled if your life is not based on your purpose for being here. While we cannot completely determine the direction our life takes, we do have some measure of control over our actions. You therefore have the power to write your story because it is your life. Here are three steps to creating your own story and doing your part to have the life you want. 1. Know what you want. You must have some knowledge of what your purpose is in this life. Do you want to be the best teacher the world has ever seen? Are you yearning to be an entertainer? Do you want to be wealthy? To travel the world? Is it your strongest desire to write best-selling books? When you are convinced that a particular thing is what you were born to do, then write your story along those lines. 2. Take action towards it. Having a dream is not enough unless you are willing to work towards it. How can you expect to be successful if you surround yourself with persons who do not inspire, uplift or motivate you? Taking action also means knowing what to do, what not to do and it means knowing when and who to ask for help. 3. Be open to change. You have to be brave enough and smart enough to accept change if necessary. Visualize

what you want your life to be and what steps you need to take to change course. Some changes will be subtle and some will be drastic and you might have to explain to your girlfriend why you don’t want to spend $200 every weekend on clubbing any more or to your boyfriend why you want to start evening school. You might have to tell that married lover goodbye or you might have to ask your supervisor for a transfer to another department. So have fun writing your life story and living it. Include some of your history, whether good or bad, because that helped you to become the person you are today. A Love Affair with Metal When I moved to the BVI full time in the early 90s there were not a lot of car models to choose from: a few Land Rovers with steering on the left side, a few Jeeps and a meager selection of vans and trucks. It was comparable to the produce choices at the supermarket: a head of broccoli, some cauliflower and local “ground provision.” After all, a normal sedan on these challenging roads would have scraped the chassis and cruise control is sort of a joke. Now along with our gourmet produce selections from the four corners of the globe, we have designer cars. A Lexus and a Mercedes were unheard of in the islands years ago, now they glide these bumpy roads like they own them. Young island boys can spot a car a mile off and tell you “Oh, that’s a Pathfinder, a Grand Vitara or Wow, check out that Armada.” SUVs rule and most folks don’t mind going to the bank to enjoy the luxury of one of these “queens of the road.” Now my car history has had more humble origins. My first car had only two gears – my feet and a hand to wave cars down. Next I graduated to a used grey Suzuki jeep. I named the car “Big Grey,” but a better name would have been “Old Faithful,” as that car was the Energizer Bunny that wouldn’t quit. Up and over steep hills with many switchbacks, down dirt roads pitted and washed out by the rains, off road on those occasions where there wasn’t a clear path. When I finally sold the vehicle, the engine was still in mint condition, the only
Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
problem was when I drove I could see the road – under my feet. My next car was an Isuzu truck I named “Buff” again for its color – a slight off white. I used it primarily for my snorkeling day charter business, hauling snorkels, masks and fins along with large coolers with drinks and countless boat parts. I liked the lady in a truck image for a while. Then the business sold and so did my truck. For a long time I had my eyes on a Jeep Wrangler – hearty enough to wade across a low lying road turned into a raging river and haul my 110lb dog in the back. So the “Green Machine” came next – the Safari edition with a hard top. Loved the look and capability, but the gas guzzling (especially with BVI gas prices!) and high step up to get in was not always great for nights out in my “finer threads.” So now the hunt is on again. At least now I have many choices.

Underwood a Performer, Nominee at 55th Grammys Going back to the Grammys when her husband – Mike Fisher, center for the Nashville Predators – has just gone back to the ice after the end of the NHL lockout, Underwood is pleased about the music world’s past year. The current Grammy field is led by Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Mumford & Sons, Fun. and Dan Auerbach (of the Black Keys) with six bids each. “Music is so eclectic now, even one kind of music,” Underwood notes. “Tune to a country music station, and you can really hear all different kinds of artists ... people who are more rock-influenced, people who are more pop-influenced and people who are influenced by a little bit of everything. That’s what I consider myself to be. Nobody listens to one kind of music anymore. Look at somebody’s iTunes playlist.” Underwood has gotten used to being an award show host, too, having teamed with Brad Paisley to preside over the Country Music Association Awards the past five years. “With hosting something, there’s just so much more to worry about,” she says. “For Brad and me, we just want it to be a great night - and we have the ability to potentially ruin that great night, so we just really want to do a good job. We always think, ‘There are people tuning in who might not have any idea what country music’s like,’ and we want to present all of us in the best way possible.”
Blown Away is an apt title for the song that Carrie Underwood has scored her two latest Grammy nominations for. The music superstar has earned five of the honors since winning the fourth season of American Idol, and she says she’s thrilled to be in the running again for her most recent CD’s title cut, nominated for best country solo performance and best country song. She’ll also perform when CBS televises the 55th Annual Grammy Awards from Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Sunday, Feb. 10. “It’s the Grammys!” the friendly Underwood enthuses. “Those are something you learn about when you’re a kid, before you even realize exactly what they are. Growing up watching them and seeing all kinds of music coming together for one night to celebrate a great year, it’s a cool thing to be a part of now. It’s just fun to be there and to be a part of history.” That her latest Grammy nominations are for Blown Away is “cool” to Underwood, since “that’s the title of the album and the title of my tour.” After starting it last fall, she’ll resume that tour a few days after the Grammys, with the next leg taking her to Ireland and England in addition to more dates in the U.S. and Canada. “You hope that with each album and each tour, things just get better,” reflects Underwood, who made headlines by giving a youngster his first kiss during her Louisville concert last September. “I just want to move forward, and I feel like the fans really respond to that. There are people who say, ‘I’ve seen one show from every one of your tours,’ and it’s really cool that they keep coming back and we grow together.” Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Loopers Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as (Joe) a lifelong specialized kind of assassin (Loopers), who kills and disposes of people sent back through time by the gangsters of the future. As Gordon-Levitt explains in voiceover, once time-travel has been discovered—a few decades after 2044, when Looper is mostly set—it’s immediately outlawed. Young Joe has had a messed up past, no real parents, and had his lessons on life given to him by a man from the future that handed him a gun and taught him to kill. Needless to say, Joe has issues. He drops designer drugs in his eyes all day, frequents prostitutes, etc. But young Joe also has heart, studies French, dreams of traveling to “better, more sophisticated” places than Kansas, and gets all vulnerable about childhood and parenting with his prostitute lady friend Suzie (Piper Perabo). Somewhere in this stoic hitman there’s a heart – though often it gets buried beneath the selfish ambition to “get his” in life, no matter what the cost. When old Joe (Bruce Willis) arrives, young Joe is confronted by a possible version of himself that understands the world much differently; old Joe has been down the path young Joe is fighting so fiercely to travel – old Joe knows how empty it ultimately is until he finds love. Real love. Old Joe had it for a brief stint of time until his past came back to haunt him as loopers deaths are predetermined and will cost him the love of his life, as well. Old Joe is fighting for love – and he too wants to “get his,” no matter what the cost. To old Joe, the person responsible for taking what was his is someone named the Rainmaker, who is basically the all-powerful telekinetic killer of 2074, controlling everything in society from the government to the citizenry, to the mobs and their operations. Old Joe’s intel
states that it was the Rainmaker who called for the retired loopers to start having their loops closed wholesale – and therefore was responsible for shattering old Joe’s happiness. Old Joe’s plan is to infiltrate the past, locate the Rainmaker (based on hospital records) when he is a young boy, kill him, spare himself and the world a lot of darkness and heartache. Only, old Joe has three names on a list, three children – who could be the telekinetic killer, and therefore he must kill all three. Young Joe lands on a farm after steeling one of the names on the list owned by Sara (Emily Blunt). He hides out at the farm waiting for old Joe to show up so he can kill him. On the farm Sara, a low-level telekinetic who is mother to a genius-level and frighteningly powerful telekinetic child named Cid (Pierce Gagnon), who will one day be the Rainmaker. Young Joe has that vulnerable side and heart opened up by the hard-luck story of Cid and Sara – especially Cid, whose story of violence and loss at a young age is so much like young Joe’s own story. Even when Cid inadvertently blows up a gatman (mob enforcer – Garrett Dillahunt), and Young Joe knows this kid is telekinetic Rainmaker of the future, the compassion he sees Sara showing her son, and the effect it has, marks for young Joe the difference between becoming men like him (and baby-killing future him), and possibly becoming what young Joe secretly always wanted to be – a better kind of man. 15

Striking An Athletic and Educational Balance Grenada’s Olympic Games and IAAF World 400m champion Kirani James, delivered a motivational message to track and field athletes attending the Tahesia Harrigan-Scott Speed and Technical Clinic, that is applicable to every athlete who suits up in sports, striking a balance between athletics and education. James told the athletes to always surround themselves with positive people, while he underscored education’s importance. “The more you surround yourself with positive people, the better you’re going to become,” said James, the ninth fastest all time 400m runner with his 43.94 seconds time to strike Olympic gold in London last year. James said that being around his coach and 1976 Olympic Games 4x100m relay gold medalist Harvey Glance; 2004 Athens Olympics and 4-times IAAF World Long Jump champion Dwight Phillips and Tahesia Harrigan-Scott’s husband Joey, facilitates being humble, motivated and on the right track. “Also, believe in yourself in whatever you want to do: in athletics, in life, in everything you want to become, it always starts with you,” he emphasized. “You have to be motivated and excited about yourself before anyone else is excited about you and believes in you.” Currently a business major at Alabama where Harrigan-Scott graduated in 2006, James, 20, advised the young athletes to find a balance in their lives. He said they must have equal interest in school as in athletics and drove home his point. “You can’t go anywhere without a proper education these days,” said James who in his first visit in 2008
Kirani James speaks candidly about athletics and education
established the BVI All Comers as a 16 year old when he ran 46.85 seconds in the 400m. “There are lots of opportunities for athletes to get a proper education through track and field. When I started out in track, it wasn’t because I wanted to be a good athlete or get to the Olympics. Getting a proper education was the main motivation I had,” said James, one of nine athletes to have won the IAAF World Youth, IAAF World Jr. and IAAF World Sr. titles. “I worked hard everyday, thinking that if I can do well enough in track, I could get a scholarship and get a proper education,” James pointed out. “ School is just as equally important as anything else in life. In this day and age, you can’t do anything without a proper education, not event to be a successful track athlete. It’s always good to be educated and know what you are talking about.” National Javelin Throw record holder Tynelle Gumbs said the clinic was a good experience. “I know they’ll obviously benefit me because they benefitted Kirani and he’s now a World and Olympic champion,” she noted. “His advice must be working if he’s up at that level.” 19
