This Week’s Feature Story

A Cultural Cornucopia Cedar International School has the middle portion of their school title for a reason –the student body is made up of over 40 different countries! The school invites the public to come out on Saturday, the 23rd for their “Night of the Nations” event and taste some of this culture in both food and dance performances, in what is themed a “slightly” Far East/Oriental evening. Jeanette Forte, who has coordinated this event over the last few years emphasizes, “This is a childrenfocused evening and great for the whole family. The kids look forward to the entertainment every year, especially the Mocko Jumbies. It is an evening where we can celebrate our diverse cultures.” The other local entertainment includes “Maya” performing with fireballs, steel pan music from the band at St George’s Episcopal Church and martial arts displays by the Purple Dragon Karate School. The Far East theme will be showcased through a Filipino dance group comprised of children and ladies performing a war dance with “spears,” while, Cedar School students will per-

form their version of Chinese New Year Dragon Dance, with the traditional Dragon costume swaying in a long zig-zag line with many pairs of little legs underneath. The international food fest will represent the cuisine of over 20 countries and $1 per sample food tickets can be purchased towards filling your plate with a tapastype menu. “People usually come and enjoy grazing and all of the cultural entertainment,” Jeanette says with a smile. “However one of the highlights of the evening will be the setting off of the Chinese lanterns into the sky.” Once lit these hot air lanterns float like air balloons in the sky, finally fizzling out after a brief time. The biodegradable paper is not a hazard to the environment. In fact, as part of a statement about “Going Green,” Cedar School students will be focused on eco-conscious waste disposal and the food will be served on environmentally friendly products. A $1 entrance fee per person will go towards contributing to the event. The festivities start at 4pm and expect to last until 8pm. For further information call Cedar School at 494-5262.

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Crime FromKoren The Past Haunts Me Ask You also have the choice of going in person and confessing openly understanding that there could be consequences. I don’t know the statute of limitations on stealing, but you bear the risk of charges being brought against you and this risk might outweigh the benefits. Everyone makes decisions sometimes that are not good based on bad judgment. You were not in a good place at the time, but now four years later you have grown and that is cause for celebration. Keep on the straight and narrow path and use this experience to remind you that in the future it is best to take the time to make a decision and think before you act – how will this affect me in a week? In a month? In four years. Does this action lend itself to my being the kind of person I want to be? The person I can be proud of? In the meanwhile, congratulations on the bold move, you are about to make.

Dear Koren, I worked at a store about 4 years ago and I had taken some blouses and the owner never found out. I recently got saved and feel very guilty about it and don’t know how to get rid of the guilt. Confessing is way too embarrassing and would spoil my reputation. Please give me some advice on what to do. –Peppy Dear Peppy, You’ve found yourself in quite a predicament and I admire you for wanting to do something about it. I hope it’s for the right reasons though. Are you sorry you took the blouses? Remorse is about feeling genuine regret for what you did, but your guilt sounds more like fear of how you would be perceived if you were found out. Either way, the important thing is that you are uncomfortable and want to make amends. Making amends for past transgressions will give you a sense of feeling like a burden has been lifted off your shoulders. Guilt causes stress, headaches and insomnia. You can start by sending the money back that covers the value of the items. You have the choice of sending a note of apology also, explaining that you took it some time ago and want to make the return.

A “Flash Mob” Experience I am an action-oriented person and tend to respond to causes I believe in. Since living in the BVI for close to two decades, I have found myself participating in everything from “Coastal Clean Ups” to “Reef Fish Counts.” However, I have never been part of a flash mob dance¬–until just recently. The cause that grabbed my attention this time was presented as a global campaign to stop the violence to women and girls, tagged “One Billion Rising.” The number derives from the estimated amount of women and girls on the planet, who will be beaten or raped during their lifetime. A scary figure indeed! Aware of the shocking stories recently out of India and Middle East regarding the brutal treatment of women was a fact hard to ignore. I was ready to stand with those who say, “Enough is enough.” Organized by the Cada Players and Friends (with mother-and-daughter-team Joanne and Sarah Penny at the forefront), the event was scheduled for Valentine’s Day and was coordinated with over 200 countries participating. I soon learned our community action statement was going to be a flash mob dance to the tune “Break the Chain,” written and produced by the musical team of Tena Clark and Tim Heintz and choreographed by Debbie Allen. The minute I heard the catchy song, I thought–this is going to be fun. Although I love to dance, I was a little concerned that we were only going to have one rehearsal for a four–minute dance with 16step variations. Then when I reached the rehearsal at U.P.’s Cinneplex, sharing the elevator up to the ballroom with the Governor and his 10-year-old daughter, I saw that the 80 participants who showed up were well Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

under 20 years old. I took a deep breath and said – no problem, I can do this. Soon I realized the half dozen men present (one being the Salsa-King at my workplace), must’ve also felt a bit outnumbered, but their presence was greatly appreciated. The steps were easy to pick up, although remembering the order was a bit more challenging. Our instructions were to be dressed in the theme colors, red and black and be at the Riteway (Pasea) parking lot at 6pm. As I arrived, the theme song was already blaring from loudspeakers atop a truck. The media was there along with parents of the tweens and under, curious onlookers, and dancer wannabe’s. Like it or not this was going to be a YouTube moment. The mood was set and I was ready to dance. To see a video of the dance go to the Limin’ Times Facebook page and click on the link: BVI Joins One Billion Rising. 6

CBS Nabs Another NYPD Commissioner Drama oric. They don’t bother to hide their contempt for this man they don’t trust and consider an interloping opportunist. The thing about Clark is he doesn’t much care. He cares about his sister, who has a drug problem, and he takes care of her. But otherwise, Clark cares about his career and getting to the top faster than logic would assume possible. When he becomes Owen’s partner, Owen has but two years left before he can retire. McBride understands Owen. “He wants to get through this without getting shot,” McBride says. “He doesn’t care who gets credit.” Owen seems ambivalent, but there’s a reason for his studied aloofness, and he is very much a by-thebook kind of cop. “He is deeply flawed,” McBride says. “He has compromised himself, his marriage. He has suffered great loss. He is just existing.” “I know a lot of real coppers,” McBride says, adding that in his hometown of Chicago (where his nickname comes from) he has good buddies from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. “I am a lot like a copper,” McBride says. “Somebody has got to protect you, and that’s what coppers do.” Speaking over ale and a sandwich in Pasadena, Calif., McBride says he was excited about this role. He admires two hardened detectives from TV Joe Fontana (Dennis Farina) of Law & Order and Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) of NYPD Blue.

“Listen, junior, this job ain’t about getting even.” Detective Don Owen. Owen (Chi McBride, Boston Public), a hardened cop, is trying to educate his inexperienced partner, Walter William Clark Jr. (Theo James, Downton Abbey), in CBS’ Golden Boy, premiering Tuesday, Feb. 26. These sorts of lines fill the first few episodes of Golden Boy, which is unrelated to the Clifford Odets Broadway play of the same name. The TV show is about a New York Police Department commissioner, CBS’ second after Blue Bloods. In this, which airs for two Tuesdays before switching to its regular Friday time slot, Commissioner Clark relays how he came to this vaunted position at an age when he would have been lucky to make detective. He’s telling a reporter his story and the action flashes back to his beginnings as a beat cop who acted decisively during an armed hostage situation. After three years on the job, he’s made a homicide detective. Within seven years, Clark is commissioner. “He is prepared to do anything to rise in the ranks,” James says. “He is going to be someone you may think is a good guy, but how he got the job is not clear-cut. I like to think of him as not just whip-smart. In terms of police savvy, he is a bit of a genius. There is a difference between being a smart person and being able to do anything at any point.” On-screen, James adopts a Queens, New York accent, masking his natural British lilt. Like others in this procedural, James did ride-alongs with officers to research his character. In the station house, Clark has to deal with many who don’t like him, who believe his rise was too meteLimin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows London’s favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes is played to perfection by Robert Downey, Jr. in this fastpaced sequel, that is packed full of clever humor and witty dialogue. The film starts with Holmes investigating a series of crimes around Europe, believing them all connected to criminal mastermind, Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). Meanwhile, Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) is getting married and thinking they are off on their romantic honeymoon to Brighton, Watson and his new wife Mary (Kelly Reilly) board the train, however when Holmes appears in their carriage, they realize that things are not going according to plan. It transpires that Moriarty’s henchmen have filled the train, with Watson being the target and before long an explosive battle ensures. Holmes skillfully knocks Mary off the train and into a river, where she is rescued by his brother, Mycroft (Stephen Fry). One of the best lines in the film has to be when Mycroft pulls a drenched Mary out of the water and says, “Good evening, Mrs Watson. I'm the other Holmes,” she replies, “You mean there's two of you? How marvelous! Could this evening get any better?” Watson reluctantly becomes Holmes's partner for one last time and when they arrive in Paris,- they decide to put a stop to Moriarty’s evil plans. During their investigations, Holmes is captured and Moriarty reveals he owns shares in companies across Europe and plans to start a war that will be very lucrative for him. Watson rescues Holmes and the detective figures that Moriarty's next target is a peace summit, where he will create an Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

incident between world leaders to spark war. At the summit, Holmes reveals to Moriarty that he has evidence that will thwart his plans. However, there is no way out for Holmes, so he blows soot in the enemy’s eyes, grabs his enemy and propels them both off the balcony into the caldron of water below and seemingly to their death. Some time later, back in London, Watson and Mary prepare to go on their honeymoon yet again. As Watson finishes writing up his last case with Holmes, a surprise delivery alerts him to the fact that Holmes may have survived the fall. Before long, the sleuth reveals himself in the couple’s room where he rushes to the typewriter and adds something to the end of Watson’s script, clearly leaving the door open for a third film in the series. Downey Jr. and Law have an excellent chemistry and Stephen Fry is, as ever, hugely entertaining. So put your feet up and lose yourself in this funny action adventure with an outstanding cast. Enjoy! 16

Who has the best relay teams in the land? Everyone likes a good relay. Since last year, when the BVI Athletics Association introduced a relay competition as part of its Gatorade Development Series, some teams have been waiting to avenge losses. The fourth race of the series – the Johnny Hassan Relays – named in honor of the former BVI Athletics Association President, will kick off at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow. They will get their chance at redemption. Besides relay events, there will be such individual events as the 100, 200 and 400m on the track and Long Jump, Javelin Throw and Shot Put on the field This provides more qualifying opportunities for the upcoming Carifta Games, the IAAF World Youth Championships and the Pan Am Jr. Championships. But it will be the relay action that gives fans their most lung exercise. Invited to participate in a 4x100m relay are public service entities; Fire, Police and Customs among others, as well as Sporting Associations competing in a separate race. This ought to be fun as bragging rights are at stake for the next year. Then, there are primary schools in action – from Under 9 doing their 4x50m relay to the Open Sprint Medley with legs of 100-100-200400m. The women’s 4x100m Relay— especially between Sprint Tech and Top Notch Track Clubs – will be a fire burner. Top Notch will try to go 2-0 while Sprint Tech tries to even the series at 1-1 after last year’s setback. The men’s equalivent also ought to be of interest with Fast Lane mixing

it up with Top Notch and Sprint Tech Track Clubs. Meet namesake, Johnny Hassan is offering $250 for each outstanding Men’s and Women’s relay team on the night – be it club, school or public service team. The test is on to find the best teams at every level. Admission is $3 too the event. For lovers of the sport, the Johnny Hassan Relays starts four successive weeks of track and field action. The fifth and final race of the Gatorade Development Series will be in honor of BVI Athletics Association founding member and longest-serving president Rey O’Neal. This competition is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on March 1. Online registration will begin on Tuesday, Feb 19 and closes on Monday, Feb 25. The National Jr. Championships, which also serves as the Carifta Games trials, are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 8-9. The semifinals will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8 and includes the 100m semis and finals in both U17 and U20 divisions. The 400m semis as well as the Javelin Throw, High Jump and Triple Jumps, 1500m finals and the first two events of the Pentathlon will also be contested. Competition on March 9 will begin at 9:45 a.m. A technical meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, at the Multipurpose Sports Complex. All this will be followed by the March 13 to 14 Inter-Primary Schools Sports. So, go out and exercise your lungs for the next four weeks!

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
