This Week’s Feature Story

Myett’s Welcomes Some Vintage Swing It is not every day Tortola gets the taste of a southern swing band, so come on out on Friday and Saturday evenings March 1st and 2nd to put your “southern groove”on. As part of the ongoing Red Stripe True Music Series, Myett’s presents Christobel and the Jons, a group that blends Appalachian mountain music with vintage swing. Lead singer, songwriter Christa deCicco is known for her sultry voice and has been compared to the likes of vintage torch singer Billie Holiday and more contemporary soft crooner, Norah Jones. However, she has developed her own sound that is a musical bouillabaisse of folk, swing, country and blues. Her stage performance is characterized as charismatic, as she delivers heartfelt and nostalgic songs with a speakeasy feel. Christa’s music career was born out of her southern roots in Tennessee, where she began playing music and performing at a very young age. After completing college with a degree in Landscape Design, she began a more serious pursuit of her musical aspirations. Her back

up band “The Jons” consists of several rhythm section players that are skilled on a variety of instruments including: violin, trumpet, mandolin, piano, clarinet, upright bass and electric guitar – just to name a few. Christobel mixes her original songs with arrangements that reflect jazz standards, country, and what she calls “Tennessee swing.” Christobel has released five albums since 2005, with her album Love and Circumstances in 2006 accompanied by “The Jons.” Her sixth album, The Same Mistake is soon to be released and promises new songs with bassa nova and samba beats mixed with the band’s signature country/swing feel. Christobel has performed throughout the US as well as the Mediterranean Festival of the Arts in Crete and opened for many national acts including The Brazilian Girls. The musical performance starts at 7pm, but come early for Happy Hour specials between 5pm to 7pm and to reserve a good seat and enjoy dinner. History Ventures Into TV Series Vikings’ Vikings have gotten a bad rap. So says Michael Hirst, creator and writer of History’s epic nine-part series Vikings, premiering Sunday, March 3. The show explores the complex society of the Norseman as it was near the end of the eighth century. Yes, the Vikings were often large, hulking figures who specialized in violent conquests of neighboring lands while taking pillaging and plundering to new heights. But they were merely surviving in a violent world, and their story hasn’t fully been told, Hirst says, because the Vikings themselves never told it. “We’ve always represented the Vikings as “the other,” because their history was written by Christian monks, who wrote propaganda about the Vikings — how violent they were, how terrifying, how awful their gods were,” says Hirst, who has shown his yen for history with Elizabeth and The Tudors. “We’ve taken on that propaganda, because it’s never really been challenged. What interested me was to go into the Viking world-picture, into their gods, into their religion and their rituals. As the season goes on, you understand where the gods came from, you understand the attraction of the pagan worldview and the pagan gods. It’s interesting for, let’s say, a North American, largely Christian audience for the first time to be pre-

sented the pagan worldview that they overthrew, that they replaced, and what it meant. Intellectually and emotionally, it’s an interesting ride.” It’s a ride the audience takes largely through the exploits of Ragnar Lothbrok, a historical figure who nonetheless has taken on mythical status as centuries have passed. Sure, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) could sack a village or monastery with the best of them, but he also had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Believing he was descended from the Viking god Odin, Ragnar defied the conservative, selfserving policies of his local ruler, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), by sailing west to new lands using new navigation techniques. The earl, though, does not take such insubordination lightly and along with his ambitious wife, Siggy (Jessalyn Gilsig), schemes to make an example of Ragnar for anyone who would challenge his authority.

Keeping Secrets

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, I find people in our society are too secretive and that is why they do not get help for anything. If one person is suffering and they do not share it, how can we help them? If we do away with all the secrets that we are keeping, then we wouldn’t have so many children being abused for years and women getting beat up and afraid to talk about it. –Just Saying

what to disclose and who to and as a result, they guard their privacy like they do their personal diary. We even get turned off by persons who tell their whole story two minutes after meeting us, because we feel uncomfortable and uncertain of what to do with the information. Clearly, there is a time and a place for sharing information with the right person. right person I would encourage you to be understanding if someone is withholding information. He or she might have been betrayed in the past or they might need to build trust. If people know you to be confidential, they will be much more likely to share their secrets with you. If you want to know the person’s business to satisfy your curiosity, then leave it alone. If you genuinely want to help and be supportive, then you don’t need to know details. Ensure that you know exactly where to refer someone for their problems and do not act in the role of advisor if you are not qualified to do so. It may do more harm than good.

Dear JS, You are right that we should do our best to help others as much as they need our help and as much as we are capable. However, many times, if we push people too hard to disclose things they are not comfortable with disclosing, they might distance themselves from us. Children should be encouraged to be open and honest with their parents about their feelings and experiences and parents should take their complaints seriously. They also need to be taught who they can trust, especially as many reports show that children are often abused by persons known to them. Women also need support if they are victims of abuse. Again, the telling of their story, must be to someone they trust and who will be able to offer support, encouragement and give suggestions for resolving their problems. Unfortunately, people are very cautious about

Catching the Bird(ing) Flu Despite having a love for the natural world, I used to think of “Birders” as nerdy and obsessed. I can clearly remember rolling my teenage eyes as “Uncle Fred,” a self-proclaimed birder emitted an orgasmicsounding scream after sighting a hawk on a family vacation. And then I became nerdy and obsessed. And it happened in the BVI. With over 200 resident and migratory bird species occurring in the Territory, it is no surprise that I became enamored of the BVI’s many wetland, land and seabirds. One minute you’re oblivious and the next you’re trying not to swerve into on-coming traffic as you catch a peripheral glimpse of a flamingo in the salt pond on the way to the Beef Island airport. Once I was so enchanted by the siren song of a Yellow-crowned Night Heron (ok, so it sounds more like a hoarse dog barking), that I was lured into a densely vegetated mangrove. I emerged 15 minutes later, covered in mud with a brand new flip-flop missing after it sunk into the oozey mud. I’ve since made a hard – and-fast rule to wear shoes in that area. I’m gong to let you in on a secret: You probably like “birding”, you just don’t know it yet. If you must catch a virus this winter, I recommend the bird(ing) flu. And suffering through it in the BVI is not terrible. I know I’m not alone. I remember hearing a primary school student screaming. I thought she was hurt, but she was just excited about sighting a Blacknecked Stilt (which she properly identified as a result of our bird-watching trips together). An un-named colleague of mine and novice birder, took a fall on the rough terrain near the BVI’s Magnificent Frigatebird Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

colony, which required an emergency room visit to “ahem” have the spines of jumping cactus removed from her backside. While she was the “butt” of office jokes for a while, she doesn’t recount the day’s pain. She remembers how impressive the birding was. Birding fever is sweeping the globe, and is reported to be one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in the U.S. with some 50 million “bird-watchers.” Birdwatching is a fun, healthy activity and as we face shifting weather patterns due to climate change, your sightings may even yield unique information that supports the work of conservation efforts. The Jost Van Dykes Preservation Society, the BVI National Parks Trust and BVI Conservation Department are among the partners in the territory working on bird conservation initiatives. All you need is a guidebook and a pair of binoculars to get out and start enjoying the BVI’s abundant bird-life. Consider joining the BVI birding group on Facebook (www.facebook.com/BVIBirding) or contacting our partners to learn more about getting involved in bird-watching activities. 8

the “big” prize. The event is from 11am until 3pm.

A retrospective of the work of long-time BVI resident and watercolor artist, Jill Tattersall will be held at the Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum on Friday March 1st. Sponsored by The Gallery on Main Street, the show titled “Memories of the BVI” captures images of island life in the 60s and 70s in vibrant colors with impressive detail. Each painting is accompanied by a written description along with reminiscences of the story behind each work. This is the first solo art show for the 81-year-old artist, who works from photographs from the period. Opening night celebrations are from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and the exhibition continues throughout the month.

H.L. Stoutt Celebrations The former Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands for over 16 years, the late H. Lavity Stoutt, will be commemorated in ceremonies at both the college named in his honor and a graveside ceremony at Capoon’s Bay. The Government of the Virgin Islands along with the H.L. Stoutt Commemorative Committee will host the 12th annual celebrations, which begin at 10am at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. Performances by the Heritage Dancers, the HLSCC Choir as well as other groups will be followed by a parade beginning at the college entrance which will include representatives from various community groups. The official Wreath-Laying Ceremony will take place at 4pm at Capoon’s Bay. The public is invited to come out to both events.

Lincoln If you thought you knew the historical 16th President of the United States through books you have read, it is time to meet the real Lincoln. Director Steven Spielberg’s dramatic film is essentially a portal into the life of a man whose singular vision changed America forever. Instead of presenting a detailed biography, the screenplay, adapted from Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Team of Rivals, focuses on an intense period of time during the Civil War in 1865, when Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis) lobbies tirelessly for an amendment to the US Constitution for the abolition of slavery . The battle for the passage of the now famous 13th Amendment was a fierce political chess game between warring interests and showed Lincoln’s amazing courage, fortitude and political savvy in the midst of what appeared to be insurmountable odds. The Amendment lingered precariously in the House of Representatives, where it needed 20 Democratic votes from mostly southern states and not one defection from the Republican side, which was the President’s party. Under the table political “horse trading” was employed to sway the votes: congressman were cajoled, bargained with, offered positions in government and at the end of the day Lincoln’s steady persistence at the helm saw it through. Daniel Day-Lewis received a well-deserved Oscar for Best Actor based on his portrayal of Lincoln, where his acting seamlessly became the essence of this icon of a man and the folksy, intelligent, morally virtuous and witty Lincoln came through brilliantly. Sally Field, also put in an impressive performance as Lincoln’s

Tommy Lee Jones, in his weathered and seasoned way was a perfect cast for Thaddeus Stevens, an ardent abolitionist, who made the equality of races his lifetime goal. The window into Lincoln’s life ends with his assassination, although not seen directly, the tragic impact it had on the nation is vividly felt. The film is a fascinating historical piece, highlighting the challenges of the presidency in a ruptured time in American history. Somehow seeing it acted out versus just reading about this passage in history brings home the raw “blood and guts” of the Civil War and how one man’s vision kept a nation together and brought the healing balm that eventually fused the warring factions together. 15
