This Week’s Feature Story
A Cultural Arts Celebration It is not often in the span of a week one can taste, see and experience BVI culture through three diverse artistic mediums. So you won’t want to miss out on the BVI Festival of the Arts innovative program showcasing art, culture and cuisine in three separate events between March 7th to the 12th. Starting on Thursday, March 7th, the Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum will be the venue for A Taste of BVI Culinary Art. Sixteen local chefs will be serving up some authentic Caribbean cuisine including pea soup, salt fish cakes, plus chicken and fish dishes prepared in a variety of ways. After sampling some of this culinary art, stick around for local musical entertainment from the Lashing Dogs and Bertrand Lettsome’s Out of the Desert Band. There will also be performances by the popular Sky Dancers with their gravity-defying “tilts on stilts” and the cultural Anasazi Dance Troupe. The event lasts from 10am to 3pm, so sneak out for an extended lunch break and enjoy some of the BVIs best in food and music. The Festival’s Performing Arts are in full swing on Saturday night March 9th at H. Lavitty Stoutt Community
College, where there will be a series of performances, including a play production called “BVI in Times Past,” written and directed by Janice Stoutt. The drama is a depiction of island food, heritage and culture from the period of the 1940s to the 1960s, and is described as “comical, cultural and historical.” There will also be a calypso song written and performed by Velma Chung and some selections by the Virgin Island Boys, a young group of Rap singers from the Ivan Dawson School. The event begins at 7pm and tickets ($10 Adult, $5 child) are available in advance at Bolo’s and Mellow Moods, as well as at the auditorium opening night. Visual Arts will be the dominating theme on Tuesday, March 12th at 10am until 5pm for a Mountain Top “Open Air Art Gallery” featuring the well-known wall mural atop Fahie Hill. Local cultural historians such as Eileen Parsons, Ermin Penn and Rueben Vanterpool will be giving guided tours explaining the cultural significance of the various depictions of island life. Just across at the Ifield Hodge Vista called The Look Out, there will be storytelling, entertainment and cultural treats from Iris’ Place. – Jane Bakewell

should have it and eventually they wear you down. Practice. Some say that practice makes perfect. I’m hesitant to use that word, so as not to create unrealistic expectations, but I do know that constantly doing the right thing and saying the right words and being consistent can help a person to achieve excellence. Constant Assessment. Every now and again, pause to take stock and ask yourself what is working for you and what is not, what you need to do more or less of, etc. Discard what is not working and embrace what is working and continue with renewed vigour. Get feedback. It is important that you listen to the feedback and constructive criticism of the persons who are closest to you – others see sides of you that you might overlook and by paying attention, phenomenal growth can take place as a result. Believe. Believe in yourself and your ability to achieve excellence. You must acknowledge your strengths and have the confidence to keep going on even when you falter. Constantly tell yourself “I can do this”. Life is not always a bed of roses and sometimes you will have to talk yourself out of “down-in-thedumps” moments or call on your cheerleading squad to provide some motivation. The important thing is that you never give up and always remember that your goal is a worthwhile one.
everyone. If you believe in doing things halfway, or if you blame others for your being blah, or just think that life is meant to be lived aimlessly and you have no intention of changing – then you will find this topic irritating and a threat to your personal values, so just quit while you are ahead and find something else to read. If on the other hand, you have a passion for doing things right, you want to start taking more responsibility for your life, you feel with effort and perseverance you can accomplish great feats and you are someone who feels good when you have done your best – then you should continue reading. The pursuit of excellence is not a cliché, it is a personal brand that defines you and the manner in which you live. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines excellence as “the quality of being very good, superior” and links it with words like first class, greatness, supremacy and distinction. Clearly, this benchmark might not be easily attained, but is it worth it? You bet it is. How do we become excellent at what we do? Be hungry. When we want something badly, the intensity of our passion will propel us to put everything we’ve got into achieving it. Have you ever seen how relentless a teenager is when they want a new phone or an outfit? They ask, and ask again, they do all their chores, they give you 101 reasons why they

‘Duck Dynasty’ Makes reality TV A Family Affair believes that’s another key to the appeal of the show. “There’s a big old crew of people out there,” he says, “when they sniff it out – we’re not seeing this hardly anywhere else on TV, mixed into mainstream shows. We’re not ‘The 700 Club’ or anything, but when you see that - and it’s just a little piece - they do react.” He’s noticed the show does inspire people to do more than just watch. “The show causes you to do something,” he says. “People have driven seven hours to come to our place and take a photo of the building. That’s a rare show that causes you to buy something or do something. You just get excited about it.”

What a difference a year makes. On March 21, 2012, A&E Network premiered the reality series Duck Dynasty, profiling the Robertsons of Louisiana, who have made a tidy fortune from their company, Duck Commander, which manufactures handmade duck calls. Almost immediately, the saga of Duck Commander CEO Willie Robertson and his nearest and dearest - his wife, Korie; his parents, company founder Phil and Miss Kay; brothers Jase and Jep; and Phil’s eccentric brother, Uncle Si became a runaway hit. Although the Robertson men look like members of a ZZ Top tribute band (and ZZ Top’s “ Sharp Dressed Man” is the show’s theme on A&E), with their long hair, flowing beards and varied collection of headgear - especially Willie’s signature bandannas - “Duck Dynasty” offers a portrait of a functional family that works, plays and prays together. Season 3 of the show launched late last month, with new episodes airing on Wednesdays. “I think it’s our family,” says Korie. “You’ve got a lot of reality shows about family. You’ve got the Kardashians and ‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’ and all that, and they’re essentially about a family. What’s different about ours is it’s a little more functional. “People relate to it, even though we’re redneck or whatever. We’re not like everyone in the country, but you can still relate.” The Robertsons also rely on their Christian faith to get through the day, and Willie 6

From the Depths to the Heights Tortola’s natural beauty is undeniably amazing. But the other day I enjoyed nature here in a way that not many people in the world would be able to. A friend and I planned to go diving on a Sunday and when the day arrived I woke up early and excited. I had a hearty breakfast that would keep me in action for a fair part of the day. My friend was already at the dock by the time I arrived, then shortly after we jumped into the boat to get our equipment ready. I greeted the crew and met the other divers as soon as I set foot on the boat. The boat swiftly left the dock and was on its way to Angelfish reef. The morning had a beautiful soft

Rock Your Reusable Bags Plastic is out, cloth is in! Beginning on Monday, March 11th area supermarkets including Road Town Wholesale, One Mart and Supa Valu are participating in an effort to cut down on plastic grocery bags, which pollute the environment – negatively affecting marine life and the health of BVI residents. Be sure to bring your reusable bags or be prepared to pay the 15 cents per plastic bag! The “Ban the Bag BVI” campaign is a cooperative effort by WorldHouse Caribbean, Green VI, the Department of Conservation and Fisheries plus other area organizations.

2 Days in New York The French actress Julie Delpy first made a name for herself as the protagonist of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset – two films in which she and a young American meet by chance in Paris and spend a romantic 24 hours walking through the city. In 2 Days in Paris a movie that Delpy both stars in and directs, Marion (Delpy) and her boyfriend Jack (Adam Goldberg) fly to Paris from New York to visit her parents. The film chronicles a chaotic two days where the couple runs into Marion’s (many) past boyfriends, and Jack is confronted by her radical politics and her even more eccentric family. In 2 Days in New York, Julie Delpy has moved this conceit of cultural clash to Manhattan. A conceptual artist, Marion has broken up with Jack and is living with current boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock), her threeyear-old son by her ex, and Chris’ young daughter Willow. Hip and talented, Mingus works as a radio show host and as a writer at the Village Voice, where the couple first met. In all, they are content: they have good jobs, a nice family and a great apartment. But then her family arrives from Paris, a motley crew comprised of her father (played by Delpy’s real father, French actor Albert Delpy), who is now a widower; her promiscuous sister Rose, along with Rose’s clueless boyfriend Manu – and all hell breaks loose. The visit starts off

inauspiciously when Dad is delayed at the airport for smuggling in copious amounts of sausage. The old man refuses to shower, Rose flirts with everyone, the kids are picking up bad habits, and after Manu smokes pot in the elevator, a neighbor threatens to get Marion and Mingus evicted. Things are not going well – and Marion and Mingus are buckling under the strain. Charming and funny, 2 Days in New York depicts two well-meaning people from vastly different cultures learning to cope – even during the most trying of times.

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
