2013 BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival @ Nanny Cay , March 25-31 ALSO THIS WEEK: Trellis Bay Full Moon • Miss Virgin Gorda Pageant • Richiez Learning Centre Sports Day
This Week’s Feature Story
BVI Spring Regatta – Something for Everyone Whether you are a landlubber or competitive racer there will be something for everyone as the 42nd BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival gets underway starting March 25th. First on the agenda of this action packed week is Monday registration at Nanny Cay (Regatta Central) for the BVI Sailing Festival’s kickoff event, “The Round Tortola Race” on Tuesday. On Wednesday, a fun day both on and off the water, sailors will race over to Pirates on Norman Island for a day of beach games and standup paddle boarding. On Thursday, competitors can relax, take tours, or enjoy a variety of activities on Tortola, while in the afternoon classic Tortola sloops will be featured. Then comes the event that everyone is waiting for – the BVI Spring Regatta. Registration for the Regatta begins at noon on Thursday, March 28th at Festival Village, followed by the Mount Gay Welcome Party. Attracting some of the world’s most exciting racing boats, the Spring Regatta is the BVI’s biggest annual sailing competition. This year there will be entries from at least 12 different countries including the US,
Australia, UK and Russia, as well as the USVI, Puerto Rico and the BVI. Racing will start on Friday and continue on Saturday and Sunday with courses beginning and ending off Nanny Cay. One of the special things about the Regatta is that non-sailors can have as much fun as the racers. According to Spring Regatta Director, Judy Petz, there will be spectator boats for those who want to get out on the course and every night is party night at Regatta Village which will be festooned with bright lights and filled with the flavors of five food vendors serving everything from local cuisine to fresh made pizza. Live musical entertainment will include Final Faze on Thursday, Hudson and the Hoo Doo Cats on Friday, Quito & the Edge on Saturday and the Last Resort Band on Sunday. Other Regatta highlights include the annual fashion show, an Easter Parade, mocko Jumbies and the much anticipated awards ceremony and party on Sunday afternoon. So whether you sail with the big boys, or hang out at the Village, don’t miss the year’s hottest racing event. For more information go to www.bvispringregatta.org Claudia Colli

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
My wife keeps overfeeding my daughter
Ask Koren
do it by physical affection, spending quality time with the child, giving verbal affirmation, etc. Ask her to try the other methods. Assure her as much as possible that you will do your best to ensure that your family does not go hungry, so the responsibility is not all hers. Briefly and gently point out to her the dangers of childhood obesity; increased risk of diabetes and heart problems and self esteem issues for your daughter. It is difficult to change your wife’s attitude, but I do not like the attitude of ambivalence that you have about her letting herself go. Improper eating will cause a problem for her in the long run also and love should dictate that you show more concern for her habits. Understanding the dangers of over-eating benefits both her and your daughter. It is commendable that unlike many fathers out there, you are willing to have a hand in your daughter’s upbringing besides just providing food and shelter. Keep up the good work and do your best with your precious princess.
Dear Koren, My daughter is overweight and my wife does not want to do anything about it. She has let herself go and it’s fine with me because she is a grown woman, but my daughter is only 12 and every time I try to correct her eating habits my wife complains. I understand she grew up poor and doesn’t want our daughter to be hungry like she was, but this is going overboard. Concerned Dad Dear Dad, You have every right to be concerned if your 12 year old daughter is overweight and you must be able to have some say in how your daughter is raised. Perhaps it is the way that you bring up the topic that causes your wife to complain, because it sounds as though you have her best interest at heart. We both understand why your wife is feeding your daughter more that necessary; it seems that she is trying to overcompensate because of what she went through as a child. She is saying, “I love my daughter too much to ever let her go hungry the way I did”. I do believe that her motivation is love. When you speak with your wife, let her know that you understand what she went through and how it is impacting her behavior now. Remind her that there are other ways to show love besides through food – she can

Tempting Choices There is nothing quite so enticing as the aroma of freshly baking bread. It invigorates the digestive system and stimulates the appetite with thoughts of melted butter on a warm roll or muffin or… Recently I read an article on home sales that said a vanilla flavored loaf slowly baking in the oven might have a positive impact when prospective buyers come for a viewing – such was the perceived psychological impression such an aroma might have. A growing number of bakeries in the BVI are providing tempting choices. It was recently announced that the Road Town bakery on Main Street was to close and then shortly afterwards that Chef Mac, an experienced baker and longtime employee, would be taking over the bakery as his own business. I once interviewed Mac for a magazine article and his knowledge of his profession was impressive. The bakery in a convenient central location will undoubtedly do well with Mac’s unbounded enthusiasm. Besides home-made breads there will be “healthy” choices of patties, sandwiches, soups and salads – Yum! On Wickham’s Cay 2, Deli France describes itself as, among other things, a boulangerie. I often stop by for a lunchtime sandwich prepared on a crispy fresh baguette. Near the checkout station is a display case of pastries sometimes stuffed with pastry cream, various glazes on fruit tarts, chocolate éclairs and puff pastry Napoleons. It takes a strong will to pass them by but I nearly always pick up a couple of baguettes. Another bakery that is gaining popularity is right opposite Sunsail on Wickham’s Cay 2. Local citizens, Tyler and Julia Dawson, have established their bakery, Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
retail outlet and café right across from the territory’s largest bareboat facility. The other day I popped in for a cup of Java and couldn’t resist trying one of the blueberry muffins. The warm treat was filled with large juicy blueberries (no frozen or imitation product here) and it was so delicious I had to have a second one. Chef Tyler was egg washing a tray of just proved loaves of bread ready for the oven while Julia was busy delivering boxes of warm goodies across the road to the crewed yachts that now have a new way of impressing their discerning guests. There are several other bakeries around the territory but one that deserves special mention is Pam’s Bakery at Neptune’s Treasure in Anegada. Not only does she produce delicious breads, cakes and pastries (try the warm Danish for breakfast) but she also provides a delivery service to the yachts in the anchorage motoring boat to boat in her Boston Whaler. Now that’s service, BVI style! 6

CBS soap still “Restless” after all these years of neat. Jack came back determined to get Jabot (the Abbott family’s cosmetics firm) back, and his plan was to get Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott’s character, of the rival Newman family) to fall in love with him. And he went about it in a very clever, planned way.” Nikki and Jack ultimately wed, then divorced, just one of Jack’s many stops on the road of romancing and scheming — one of his latest being with Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford). “He absolutely has had his moments,” Bergman muses, adding that he also has stayed mindful of his alter ego’s more redeeming qualities. “Jack had his father, but John (the Abbott patriarch played by Jerry Douglas) died ... then they told me, ‘We’re going to bring him back, less as a ghost and more Jack’s conscience.’ And I thought, ‘Oh, great. I’ve gotta do the ghost storyline.’ Who knew it would be such a gift? At his most devious, Jack still has to sit with his father and say, ‘I miss you, and I wish you could help me.’ ” Eric Braeden, Jeanne Cooper, Doug Davidson, Tracey E. Bregman, Sharon Case and Kristoff St. John are among other actors who have had lengthy runs on The Young and the Restless, which has won 113 Daytime Emmy Awards — seven for outstanding daytime drama. It also has an ongoing spinoff in The Bold and the Beautiful, and while the number of daytime soaps has dwindled, Bergman is pleased and grateful to remain with one of the survivors.
The show may not be so young anymore — as its 40th anniversary indicates — but it’s still restless, proved by the plot twists it keeps handing its longtime characters. That’s what has kept so many stars of The Young and the Restless on board, and they’ll be present as the CBS daytime drama hits the four-decade mark Tuesday, March 26. Though the milestone will be noted in certain ways, it’ll also be just another day in fictional Genoa City, according to three-time Daytime Emmy winner Peter Bergman, who has played Jack Abbott on the soap since 1989. “It’s a giant chunk of my life,” he reflects. “Because I can remember clearly my first day, it seems it was yesterday. My daughter was 4 weeks old when I started the show, and she graduated from college last year. When you put it in terms of someone else’s life, that’s a really long time.” Still, previous All My Children co-star Bergman reminds that he didn’t originate his role on the serial created by the late William J. Bell and wife Lee Phillip Bell (parents of actress Lauralee Bell, the show’s Christine “Cricket” Blair). The late Terry Lester was the first Jack, the womanizer whose life has been marked by everything from sexual harassment suits to political bids. “Actors get frustrated with writers, but I’ve never been one of those people,” Bergman says. “They’ve written so many things for me, and my kickoff was spectacular. Terry Lester had left of his own accord, and I think Bill Bell took it kind of personally, so Bill was determined to force Peter Bergman down the world’s throat. And that was both good and bad. “Of course, a lot of people loved Terry and missed him terribly, but what Bill did for me storywise was kind Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Crowning Miss Virgin Gorda Come out and cheer for your favorite contestant at the Miss Virgin Gorda Easter Festival Pageant on Saturday, March 23rd. The pageant will be held at the Recreation Field dubbed Darwin George Easterville, and will begin at 8pm. The four contestants, Mindy Paul, Emoni Prince, Sylvanna Charles and Gwenisha Wilkerson, made their debut at the Miss Gorgeous Pageant at the Catholic Community Center in Virgin Gorda. The contest is a part of next week’s Virgin Gorda Easter Festival celebration which will culminate with the festival parade on Easter Monday.
Learning Centre Celebrates The Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre will celebrate its Ruby Anniversary with a “historical” Sports Day on Thursday, March 21st. Taking place from 10 am to 1pm at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, the sports day will highlight old-time childhood games like lime and spoon races, ball throw and flat races. There will also be wheelchair races so all children, no matter what their special need, can participate. The school, which is located at John’s Hole, first opened its doors in October 1972 and was inaugurated by the Red Cross and the wife of then Governor of the Virgin Islands, D.G. Cudmore in order to serve children with special needs. Eslyn Richiez, for whom the school is named, was its first principal and Alice Leonard her only assistant. Originally called the Fort Charlotte Children’s Centre, the school was originally located at MacNamara. It became a public school in 1977 and moved to its new Johns Hole location to offer students more space and better facilities. Other anniversary events scheduled this year include a commemorative booklet and a gala award ceremony which will take place on June 14.
Howling at the Moon It’s full moon time again on Wednseday, March 27th and besides howling, there is no better way to celebrate this lunar event than to head to Trellis Bay for its monthly party. The Razorbladez will provide the entertainment and a Caribbean buffet starting at 7pm will make sure that you are well-fed when the fire balls are lit. Also on hand are the acrobatic antics of the event’s popular mocko jumbie troupe, the burning man, as well as three bars to keep you well-watered.
Caribbean Cellars Fete Wine lovers head down to Caribbean Cellars’ to help celebrate the opening of their new location off Lower Estate Road near the Fedex warehouse. The fun is from 2 to 5 pm, and there will be food drinks, prizes and amazing deals.

Django Unchained Django Unchained is the latest movie written, directed and produced by Quentin Tarantino, creator of Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill trilogy. It has gained Tarantino his fifth academy award nomination and second win. The film is set in 1852 pre-civil war era in the deep south of the United States. Django is a slave who is bought by Dr. King Schultz, a German bounty hunter, so that he could help him find the slave’s previous owners, a group of murderous hillbillies known as the Brittle brothers. After successfully accomplishing this task Dr. Schultz freed Django then helped him become literate and teaches him to use a gun. Django sets his sights on rescuing his wife Broomhilda von Schaft, another slave sold by the Brittle brothers to a plantation known as Candy Land. They plan a well-mastered but risky scheme to get into the plantation owned by the very inhumane slave owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) in order to rescue Broomhilda. Academy award winner Jamie Foxx plays the part of Django and Austrian-German actor Christoph Waltz plays the character of Dr. Schultz. Waltz’s solid performance landed him his second academy award win. His first was for another Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds for his role as Nazi Colonel Hans Landa. Django Unchained follows on Tarantino’s gruesome style, inspired by Old Spaghetti Westerns, specifically by Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 Django, which is considered one of the most violent westerns of the era. Undoubtedly Tarantino’s Django takes violence up a notch. Interestingly, he plays homage to the original by having Franco Nero, the 1966 Django, do a cameo as an Italian mandingo fighter owner. Nevertheless, Tarantino’s plot Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
of an African slave who becomes a bounty hunter in the Wild West is an original one. The cowboy’s scenes and the shootouts are as authentic as any old western movie. The film’s approach to such a serious subject as slavery is paradoxical, and its violent nature has gained it mixed reviews. In response to this criticism Tarantino has argued that the film is not nearly as violent as real slavery. Although it’s not really fair to expect an actual depiction of historical slavery from a Tarantino film in the first place, the film forces you to think about that part of history and the painful reality that slaves lived under. There isn’t any known documentation of a slave that became a bounty hunter with hopes of saving his wife and restoring his life as a free man, neither has there been a cowboy movie that addresses the topic of slavery. This new twist in history has enough action to keep our attention and anyone can get pleasure from the feeling of redemption. If you are a Tarantino fan, enjoy old westerns and would like a different take on history I highly recommend this film. Just make sure not to bring along any children or anyone who might have a weak stomach. 16

Youth Triathlon Series Kicks Off Although the BVI is surrounded by water, sadly there’s aren’t many involved in water sporting activities and, there’s a large segment of the young population who even can’t swim. However, Chris Ghiorse must be commended for his efforts in getting youngsters actively in the water, and more so, involved in doing Triathlons. Last Saturday, some 27 young and enthusiastic under 14 competitors, were either diving into the water at Trellis Bay on Beef Island, or riding their bikes and running, in the kickoff of the 2013 Youth Triathlon Development Series, hosted by BVI Triathlon Federation (BVITF) and BSAFE. When it wasn’t a Triathlon activity, it was a Duathlon where they ran, rode their bike and then ran again. “Last year I felt that many children were stuck at home when they wanted desperately to attend the events I was hosting,” Ghiorse said. “This year the BVITF is focusing on providing children free transport from a designated locations to get to each event we have scheduled on the calendar.” Ghiorse said he thinks the biggest reason the races are so much fun for everyone is due to the community effort being made by all involved – from the parents/guardians and volunteers who help with a variety of tasks to Karl Scatliffe’s bussing – it
truly would not be possible without their commitment. “Since these events are designed to help learn about Triathlons I like to keep everything very short,” he pointed out. “My primary concern at this stage is safety for all.” The event began in 2012 and Ghiorse said that from the events they have scheduled this year he hopes to find a few keen individuals who will want to start specific training for Triathlons. “This is a new sport and from my experience our biggest challenge is going to be swimming,” he explained. “Swimming is the shortest leg of triathlons, but without some experience in the water you can’t even get to the next leg.” Another event in the 2013 Youth Triathlon Development Series is scheduled for Saturday, March 30 at Trellis Bay Beach on Beef Island. The event begins at 7:30am with registration. There is no registration fee for this event. Further details can be obtained from Chris at 542.1981 or chris@bsafe.vg. Chris said he will be hosting a training day aimed at introducing such triathlon concepts as swiming, biking, running and transitions to all children under 17. “We are trying to encourage participation, regardless of their individual ambitions,” he said. 19

Weekly Suduko
The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
