Rotary District 7020 Conference May 13-18 Also this week: the Pampered Chef show @ Myett’s • All white taurus Affair @ Capt. Mulligans • hlsCC summer Concert

This Week’s Feature Story

A Historic Rotary Conference Rotarians from throughout the Caribbean have converged on the BVI this week for an unprecedented event, the annual District 7020 Conference which is being hosted in the Territory for the first time. According to Rotary District Governor, Vance Lewis, “the 2013 District 7020 Conference will be a proud moment for our local Rotary family.” Members from the Districts’ ten member countries and 82 clubs will network, review the organization’s current status and chart a course for the future. The conference, which began on Monday, May 13th, will continue until Saturday, the 18th. During that time there will be a flurry of activities to keep both visiting and resident Rotarians busy and engaged including a cocktail reception, an awards luncheon, inspirational addresses, meetings to discuss Rotary matters and a Grand Ball. Hosting a meeting that includes membership from 82 clubs from ten Caribbean countries was a challenge for a small island nation with predominately small boutique hotels and meeting places. But with the recent growth in BVI’s infrastructure, and the election of Vance Lewis as District Governor, the islands were at last ready to accommodate a

gathering of this size. All of the BVI’s Rotary clubs will be participating in the historic conference including the founding Rotary Club of Tortola, which celebrates its 45th year, the Rotary Club of Road Town, the Sunrise Club, as well as the Rotaract Club, the Interact Club and three Early act groups which are introducing Rotary to a new generation of British Virgin Islanders. Community service is among the club’s primary mission and among its many projects have been hurricane relief, adopting schools, improving playgrounds, replanting mangrove areas, as well as building a school on a small island off the coast of Haiti. In keeping with the Conference’s theme, “Experience the Passion of Rotary,” District Governor Lewis says, “In the BVI we are passionate about Rotary and its ideals.” He concludes: “We are inviting everyone in the Territory to help us give all our visiting Rotarians and their families a very warm British Virgin Islands welcome.” – Claudia Colli

Husband Fooling Around

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, I have been married for over 15 years and recently after my husband returned from a trip, I found out he had met a girl there and was texting her. He said she approached him and asked if he was married and he said yes, and she said she had a crush on him. He wants to keep her as his friend but I don’t feel comfortable about it and I found out he was lying about the details surrounding how they met. I don’t trust him and I am so confused. He says he sees her as a friend and nothing else. What is he trying to tell me because I am angry like hell and want to just leave him altogether. –Writer

Tell him that you are uncomfortable with him being close friends with someone who is attracted to him. Ask him what is missing from your relationship so that you can both work on it and he will not need any other outside persons to provide excitement. You also need to control yourself because stress, anger, nagging and arguments are just not good for you. They are also detrimental to relationships. After you have said your piece, try to ensure that your home is a warm, comfortable place filled with love. Try to recreate some of the earlier days when you both were very passionate about each other and let him be reminded that he has what he needs right there. If after all that, he still insists on maintaining the texting relationship with the young lady, I think at this point marriage counseling should be considered. Hopefully the counselor after listening to both sides will help you to mend your relationship and get you back on to the Love Highway.

Dear Writer, You have a right to be confused because a man of your husband’s age should have a level of maturity to know that a married man should not be texting with a woman who has a crush on him. Engaging in regular communication could be interpreted as encouraging her. He lied because he knows that he is wrong. I do not know what he is trying to tell you, but his actions are sending the message that he is probably bored or dissatisfied with something in his life or just seeking some adventure. Either way, while he is playing around with this intruder, you are hurting like hell.

That Car Recently, I went home to the UK for a visit. Although I should know by now that around Christmas and January, it does get very, very cold, especially in the north of England which is where I am from – I have never quite gotten the hang of packing the right clothes and this time was no exception. Where was I really going to go with my beach sarong? I had, after all wished for snow… and snow we got. However, this was not to deter me as I headed off to London for a week to see some friends. The weather had decided to follow me south so it was still snowing, but lovely, as we all gathered for a dinner party at my friend Ed’s where I was staying. After a lot of excitable catching up, a friend asked me whether “That Car” was still in my garage? I should explain here that, “That Car” belonged to a neighbor who had used my garage in London over ten years ago. Unfortunately the neighbor has since passed away, and as my property had never been rented out to car-owners, the matter had gone largely ignored. But, yes, there was still “That Car” in my garage – and I decided there and then that my (our) mission was to get it out of there! So the plans were hatched, Ed suggested calling a scrap car dealer, hey but that was too easy! So, a couple of days later, and still snowing, three of us set off to my property dressed ready for an ascent up K2. When we got there though, the first obstacle faced us in the form of a sturdy set of gates that had been put up in front of the garages. I did recall in the dim distant past some discussion about gates but well that was a while ago. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

I was sent off to find a neighbor with a spare key – success! So we unlocked the gates, only to find another challenge – someone had parked their car between the gates and my garage, meaning we could not physically get the car out. However, we decided that we could unlock the garage door (no mean feat when it has not been opened for over 10 years) and perhaps crawl inside to get information about the car. So after much digging, twisting and WD40’ing – the lock suddenly popped open and Ed was sent in to investigate and came out cold, wet and covered from head to toe in cobwebs. It was now well past lunchtime and we had all had enough of cars, and as we drove off Tim diplomatically pointed to a poster over the road, “Cars Scrapped – We Give you $100 – Call Today!” The look on Ed’s face said it all so I decided it was time to take the boys for lunch, and it better be somewhere good! 6

Promised Land The current boom in gas exploration in the US is both a blessing and a concern. Ending reliance on imported oil is an important policy consideration, but the method for extracting the gas – hydraulic fracturing, or “fracting,” as it is known, creates the potential for an environmental catastrophe. A documentary called Gasland released in 2010 first brought attention to the issues revolving around “fracting” and now Promised Land explores the issues of this newest energy source through a film that is both entertaining and thought provoking. The movie stars Matt Damon as Steve Butler, the gung-ho sales representative of a global energy company looking to buy up gas drilling rights in a small farming community. Accompanying him is co-worker, Sue (Frances McDormand), a cynical company veteran looking out for the firm’s bottom line. The two start off by organizing a meeting in the local high school gym to ply their sales pitch to the hard scrabble farmers who for the most part are barely making ends meet. Farming is a dying way of life in this community and leasing their lands to the energy company is an answer to their mounting financial problems. The money could put their kids through college and offers hope in a place where it is in short supply. What should be a quick and easy sale, becomes complicated when a high school science teacher and a former MIT professor (Hal Holbrook) starts educating the public on the dangers of fracting. Another complication arrives in a pickup truck driven by Dustin Noble, an environmental activist who starts disseminating his own information on the dangers of fracting. Young and charming, Dustin has an easygoing per-

sonality and quickly ingratiates himself within the community. As the towns people themselves become fractured between pro and anti fracting groups, Steve begins to question whether his company’s goals are in the town’s best interests. While the town debates the merits of fracting Steve sets his sights on a pretty young schoolteacher named Alice (Rosemarie DeWitt), who is also being pursued by the ever present environmentalist, Dustin. In the meantime, the unflappable Sue flirts with a local shopkeeper whose take on life is as cynical as hers. At first, the community’s small town values seem to be rubbing off on this odd corporate couple, but for Sue, a single mom trying to make ends meet, loyalty to the company takes precedence. Promised Land is a low-key film with a cast of disiparate characters struggling with complex issues. From Dustin the environmentalist to Steve the company man, people are not always who they seem, and like their counterparts elsewhere in the world, the residents of this small American farming community struggle with doing what is right for both their families and themselves. 13

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Sprinting Into History There are hundreds of athletes who compete in track and field. But only one, or sometimes two, will rise to the top and have their name etched in the National Record books – some for a while, others longer. Someone will eventually come along sooner or later and seize a mark as records are made to be broken. Many who compete, however, only get their names recorded in the competition results. Anyone fortunate to attend the annual Sports Day, which has been going on since 1957, would have witnessed a bit of history during this year’s competition on several fronts. Finally, after all her accomplishments since 2008 (CUT Games, Leeward Youth and Leeward Islands Jr. Championships, Carifta Games and CAC Jr. Championships medalists) Nelda Huggins did something during the 2013 Elmore Stoutt High School InterHouse Championships last week that she had never done before – running a composite of 36.10 seconds in two races. Not since Rose Phillips in the 1970s, had a female athlete simultaneously held both National Scholastic Sprint Records, the fastest times recorded by an athlete attending any high school within the territory’s borders. Huggins, 16, took care of that in two runs, when she etched her name in the National Record Books for the very first time with her commanding 100m victory in 11.77 seconds last Wednesday, winning the Intermediate Girls 100m for Lettsome, House 1. “It felt like a normal run,” she would say afterwards. “But I didn’t know I was going that fast.” Her time wiped Shanice Hazel’s 11.78 seconds

Nelda Huggins' 100m record

from April 9, 2007 from the National Scholastic Record, National Youth Record (U18) and National Jr. Record (U20) marks. Two days later on Friday, she took sole possession of the 200m National Scholastic Record of 24.55 seconds she had been sharing with Britney Wattley since Feb 9, 2013, when she stopped the clock at 24.37 seconds. Wattley’s mark had been on the books since 2008. Huggins had already gone faster – 24.08 at the Carifta Games in the Bahamas on April 1 – but, winds over the allowable 2.0 meters per second, negated the time as a record. At her age, Huggins has run faster than current National Record Holder, Tahesia Harrigan-Scott, who’s mark is 11.13 seconds which she ran twice in 2006. And her season is not done, as she has also qualified for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, July 10-14. Now that she has set the marks which she’ll certainly improve, its only a matter of time to see how far down she’ll take them. 17
