This Week’s Feature Story
Paws On The Move For all animal lovers in the BVI, here is great opportunity to don your fancy threads and lend your support to the BVI Humane Society for their annual Paws for A Cause event this Friday, May 31st on the gracious outdoor entertainment patio at Government House. This year will be a time to celebrate some very exciting developments for the Humane Society including the news of the purchase of land in Josiah’s Bay for a new shelter location. “We are thrilled to announce we are in the closing process on the purchase of an acre of land and a long time dream is soon to be a reality,” said Director, Nancy Woodfield Pascoe. And true to the final request of recently departed BVI Humane Society founder Tessa Gunter, the Swedish flag will be flying in her honor. The evening events include both a live and silent auction with many tantalizing items to bid on. Some of the auction items include: day sails, hotel stays, dive packages, restaurant meals, artwork and services offered from professionals, like a chiropractic treatment. Some other fun offers include a roundtrip ticket to Martinique from Seaborne Airlines, chalet stays in France or Colorado – or how about a recycled washable sailcloth bed for your pooch from Nutmeg Designs? While the bidding is going on fast and furi-
ously, there will be refreshments served including a wine tasting from Tico, hors d’oeuvres from the Government House kitchen staff and entertainment supplied by the BVI’s “sexiest sax players,” Kamau Georges and Dalan Vanterpool with their cool jazz renditions. Thankfully the many years of Auctions, Dog Shows and Gaming Nights have all gone into a fund to purchase the land, as Society Director Nancy mentioned, however a modern facility is now needed to house and care for the islands’ stray four-pawed residents. The BVI Humane Society is seeking support to construct the newly designed shelter on the purchased land. Plans are under way for a multi-phase development that will include fully equipping the shelter. Tickets for the event are $60 and can be purchase from event fundraise, Heather Chapman at 340-O680 or email, heather@surfbvi.com. – Jane Bakewell

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
She Snubbed My Gift
Ask Koren
Maybe she is into delayed gratification and opened some of her presents already and wants to leave some of the pleasure for later - you don’t know what her reason is so don’t jump to conclusions. We have to just accept people for who they are. Isn’t that what you would like from her too? By the way, I am not saying your expectations are unreasonable. Most of us when we give gifts, wait sometimes with more excitement than the receiver to see the pleasure on their face and we feel a sense of gratification that we did well. All I’m saying is that we have to learn to give just for the sake of giving, expecting nothing in return. That is truly what gifts are about. So have some patience and allow your relationship with this woman to thrive naturally. You don’t even know if you will marry her son. You did your part by extending a courtesy, so let that alone bring you a sense of satisfaction. Remember also, that the man is your focus, not his mother; so ensure that you are daily giving him gifts of love, kindness, sweet words and I’m sure he will be happy to return the favour.
Dear Koren, I gave my boyfriend’s mother a gift for mother’s day which was the 12th of May and she was grateful, but when I went to her house last Sunday to drop off the kids, I noticed that the gift was not opened. Now we don’t have a bad relationship between us and I only know her for less than a year but at least I am trying to build a connection between us and I find that her not opening the gift was kind of rude. Should I ask her about it? –ZW Dear ZW, Since timing is clearly important to you, I bumped up your question above others in the queue so that I can answer in a timely manner and not have you think me rude. It was very thoughtful of you to get her a gift and your motive sounds sincere – to build a connection between you two. I don’t know what other acts of kindness you have shown, but maybe you just need to leave it alone for now. Confronting her might make you seem too pushy and then she will question your motives. People are different and you have to let go of the expectations that she must act in a certain way. That is setting yourself up for disappointment and unnecessary stress. Maybe she is just not ready to open the gift because she shook it and already knows what it is.

A Winning Day In the last issue of the Limin Times we wrote about the Leverick Bay Poker Run and what a unique and exciting event it is. I have never been to a poker run but this year I was able to experience first hand what the most anticipated nautical event of the year is all about. Like something you would only see in the movies, the roar of the engines took over the sea on Sunday. Everyone was out for a little fun with hopes of having the best poker hand to claim the big prize of the day. Me and a couple of my friends set out to see what all the hype was about and decided we weren’t going to play a hand but instead we would hit a few stops and see other hopefuls grab their cards. We ended up at Norman Island and coming into the harbor the usual quiet and serene beachfront restaurant had been transformed. There were boats everywhere with engines revving, music playing and people everywhere. I was shocked at the scene because although I had written about it and talked about it I didn’t think it was quite like this. I never imagined there were so many speedboats here in the BVI. I know that we are seen as one of the sailing capitals of the Caribbean but this was on a whole other level. What I liked was that some of the crew were all uniformed out in their custom made t-shirts. There was one boat and crew that stand out in my mind Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
namely because of the name of the boat and all the attention it was getting. As we pulled in the harbor in front of Pirates Bight there was a crowd of people just standing and taking photos. Now I know very little about boats but I will say this boat was a beauty. With its immaculate paint job and engines that were roaring ever so loudly, you could hear nothing else, the crowds stood mesmerized staring at this beautiful piece of machinery. The name of the boat was “Fat Boy.” And as everyone grabbed his or her card and left, we decided to hang out for a moment at Pirates Bight and while we didn’t finish the race I can now say I experienced a little part of what is hailed as “the most anticipated nautical event of the year!”

Catch and Release Catch and Release is a film that makes you think that no matter how clearly you have all your life’s plans set out in front of you and how well you know someone – it can all change at a moments notice. Gray (Jennifer Garner) is at the funeral of her fiancé, Grady. They were supposed to be married that day, but due to an accident during his bachelor party weekend, he was killed. Gray is not coping and eventually seeks solace in a tub in an upstairs bathroom. Meanwhile, one of Grady's friends, Fritz (Timothy Olyphant) who has seduced one of the catering staff, takes his conquest into the same bathroom and Gray is forced to listen to the entire performance. Finally, once the caterer leaves, she pulls back the shower curtain, startling Fritz. Gray moves into the house with Grady’s other friends, Dennis (Sam Jaeger) and Sam (Kevin Smith) at which time she also discovers that Grady had been transferring $3,000 every month to a woman in LA. As Fritz is from LA, she goes to him for answers. Shockingly he reveals that Grady has a son with a woman he met in LA and that he sends the money to support them. He is economical with the truth though when he tells Gray that the boy is eight and that the encounter happened before she and Grady were involved. Eventually, “LA Woman,” Maureen (Juliette Lewis), and her son turn up. When Gray encounters them, she realizes that the boy is 3 years old, not 8, so clearly the affair happened while she and Grady were together. Gray confronts Fritz about the revelation. She slaps

Things are also heating up between Fritz and Gray as they continue to develop their relationship in secret. Then, Dennis reveals that he has feelings for Gray. In an attempt to ease his pain, Gray tells Dennis that her relationship with Fritz is "less than nothing," but Fritz hears her and heads home to Malibu. When the group come together for Grady’s memorial service, some important decisions are made. Gray determines that she never fully knew Grady, but that she has come to have feelings for the one person that they could both trust the most… 13

Track and Field Showdown in Road Town Starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon Tortola, the smallest member of NACAC (North America, Central America and Caribbean) in track and field will be the sports epicenter hosting athletes from NACAC members Canada and the USA, as well as Trinidad and Tobago. The inaugural BVI Twilight Invitational will see Taheshia Harrigan-Scott leading the territory’s pro corpse that includes Karene King, Ashley Kelly and Chantel Malone. Also, the best U20 Carifta Games finalists and medalists in the sub region are simultaneously going head to head in the Leeward Islands Jr. Invitational. From 1970 to 2010, there was a BVI Invitational. The BVI Twilight Invitational now replaces that and will feature professional athletes from NACAC, shattering All Comers Records on the red Mondo surface. All Comers Records are the fastest times ever recorded on the track. The merging of the Leeward Islands Jr. Invitational and the BVI Twilight Invitational makes this event different to all the professional meets in the regional circuit. The Leeward Islands Jr. Invitational with athletes from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Trinidad, assembles several Carifta Games medalist and finalists in this competition. That in itself has made the Leeward Islands Jr. competition, the highest caliber U20 meet in the subregion. With both levels of competition assembled here, we’ll see athletes who have qualified for IAAF World Youth Championships in, Ukraine in July and the IAAF World Championships in Moscow in August. IAAF 2003 World Champion and St. Kittian icon Kim Collins will be in the 100m and will be challenged by teammate Antoine Adams, Jamaica’s Dexter Lee and athletes from Puerto Rico, Trinidad, and Canada. With 2004 Athens 400m Olympic Games champi-

on Jeremy Wariner is in the lineup of athletes as well as London 2012 Olympic Games champ Kirani James’s we should see the all Comers record of 46.85 seconds will be wiped from the books. Wariner is also a 2008 Beijing Olympic Games 400m silver medalist and a 2005 and 2007 IAAF World champion. Another highlight will be the Women’s 4x100m Relay. The last time BVI women ran here, they defeated St. Kitts. Now, they will face Canada, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic in a race that’s sure to better the 44.34 seconds All Comers Record established in 2010. All of the teams will be trying to be among the top 16 in the world invited to Moscow, in August. The Leeward Islands Jr. Invitational will see the 2012 and 2013 Carifta Games Javelin Throw champ, Dominica’s Shani Angol and the BVI’s Tynelle Gumbs, going head to head Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner will headline the 800m against Guadeloupe’s Cheryl Farial, renewing their epic 2012 battle, where Warner established the existing All Comers Record of 2:10.92. Meanwhile, 2013 Carifta Games 400m silver medalist Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses, renews her rivalry with Guadeloupe’s Sareena Carti, whom she beat at Carifta. Event will be held at A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground. Admission is $10. 17

Weekly Suduko
The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
