This Week’s Feature Story

BVI Gets the Roxx Boxx Experience Hip Hop Rocker Diva, Divinity Roxx will be tearing up the stage at Mulligan’s on Saturday night, June 8th, wielding her bass guitar and five-member back up band. As the second performance in the Bayside Music Concert series, this former bassist for mega star Beyoncé, will get a chance to “strut her own stuff.” The Atlanta, Georgia native has already established herself as a solo-performing artist in this last year with the debut of her first EP (Extended Play: music singles with bonus tracks) called the Roxx Boxx Experience. Divinity explains her album as “honest and bold, edgy and hard.” The seven-track project includes funk legend Bootsy Collins and Southern rap veteran Killer Mike. Divinity has an impressive touring schedule including tours in Europe and Asia and most recently South Korea, where she acts as musical director for South Korean K-Pop group, 2NE1. She has in the past shared the stage with iconic artists such as Kanye West, Jay-Z, George Michael and Destiny’s Child. Bayside Rhythm promoter Dalan Vanterpool explains her musical genre as “All over the place, but mostly a combination of hip-hop and rock with a little rap thrown in.” Divinity’s music is characterized as blatant, bois-

terous and unconventional. In a recent interview she confessed she never knows what she will do on stage, neither does her backup band. So get ready for an edgy performance. Other bands performing that night include local favorites; Type of Toad, Hot Sauce, B’More and appearances by Kamau Georges and Dalan Vanterpool on sax. Don’t miss a chance for a pre-show “Meet and Greet” held at Bamboushay on Friday night June 7th. The world-renowned guitar bassist and her band will be there to mix with the locals and sign autographs from 7pm to 9pm. Be sure to head out early to get a spot for the Saturday night performance. Gates open at 6pm at Mulligans with ticket prices at $25. Advance tickets can be purchased at Mulligans, Umi and D Best Cup. For more info go to www.baysiderhythms.com – Jane Bakewell

to date. It went against her value system, and although she spent a lot of time with them she maintained her standards. Of course, she was occasionally subjected to persons stereotyping her based on her friends’ choices but she was ever vigilant about ensuring she did not reflect their behavior. 3. Endeavour to be a leader. It is good to be aware of what you are taking in from the persons close to you and it is good to endeavor to not let their attitudes or actions influence you negatively, but that is not enough. Take a step further and be the influencer in a positive way. 4. Choose your companions purposely. They can bring out the best or worse in you, so minimize the time you spend around negative people and choose people who inspire and motivate you to be your best. Choose those who confront you when you are out of line and persons in whose lives you can make a positive difference.

The other day, I read an interesting quotation by a gentleman, Jim Rohn. It said “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”. I found the statement to be very provocative, then I really sat and pondered; did it have any truth to it and who are these people? We spend time with people out of choice – our friends mostly; sometimes we have no choice when it comes to folks like coworkers or some family members and then we have those we choose to spend time with, but not primarily for our personal gratification, but because we see it as benefitting them. The five persons can come from any of those categories. Regardless of whether we are around them by choice or not, it is possible that they can have some influence on us. Are you really ready to confront that reality? And what are the implications for that in our daily lives? Let’s examine four considerations: 1. We become what we constantly behold….and hear and absorb. Yes, we know that the lily grows in muck and comes out pure and white but the lily doesn’t have an impressionable brain, humans do; and as much as we try to block out certain persons or we dislike their behavior, they affect us. 2. Guard preciously your prized ideals. I know a woman that had her four closest female friends make certain decisions about the kind of men they wanted

Best of Both Worlds? When I finally got to retire and the opportunity to travel a little more widely, my options for dodging “rock fever” started to open up. When my wife and I stumbled upon a small house in South West France, which needed some TLC, I thought: “Here’s a chance to have the best of both worlds – winters in the Virgin Islands and summers in France. Keeping Mum If you like a good old fashioned British comedy with a touch of the macabre, a villainess who is also the heroine, and a dysfunctional family in need of help, then Keeping Mum is just your cup of tea. First released in 2006, this frothy potion of a movie features Maggie Smith (most recently the sharp tongued dowager in Downton Abbey) as Grace Hawkins, a suburban housewife sent to a prison for the criminally insane after she is discovered travelling with a trunk containing the body parts of her husband and his mistress. Fast forward 40 years to the household of the pious and straight-laced vicar Walter Goodfellow (Rowan Atkinson), his bored and frustrated wife Gloria (Kristen Scott Thomas), and their two children, oversexed teenager Holly and ten-year-old Petey, a wellmeaning but nerdy kid who regularly suffers at the hands of school bullies. The Goodfellows are in need of a housekeeper and it is Grace, newly released from prison, who answers their ad. It is a match made in heaven. Grace is kindly and efficient and has a way with the kids. There are also a series of coincidences that Gloria initially shrugs off. The neighbor’s dog that kept her awake at night mysteriously disappears, as eventually does the neighbor. The school bullies that torment Petey experience an unfortunate accident when their bike brakes fail as they careen down a steep hill. Grace also puts a little spice back into the Goodfellow’s marriage by sabotaging a budding romance between Gloria and Lance, an American golf pro (Patrick Swayze) who attempts to lure her for a

tryst in an isolated cabin, and when that fails, for a clandestine getaway at a tropical resort. Lance, though has a seamy underside and when it is discovered by the ever-vigilant Grace, he too comes to a timely and fitting end. As the body count mounts up, life in the village of Little Wollop becomes increasingly tranquil. Grace unleashes the vicar’s amorous side by quoting sexy passages from the Song of Solomon. She also preps him on how to give his sleep inducing sermons the “wow” factor before he sets off on an ecclesiastical conference. Perhaps most miraculously, she channels Holly’s single-minded interest in boyfriends to an obsession with cooking. In some ways, this movie reminded me of a childhood favorite of mine, Arsenic and Old Lace, starring Cary Grant as a doting nephew who discovers that his sweet maiden aunts were not what they seemed. And while the Goodfellows’ housekeeper is also not what she seems, perhaps it takes someone as ingeniously inventive – and diabolical as Grace – to set things right, even if it’s in the wrong way. 13

Falling Skies Returns With Horses, A Baby and The French When you’re an outnumbered and outgunned ragtag army taking on a vastly superior invading force, it helps to have powerful friends. That was the situation facing the American rebels battling the British during the Revolutionary War, when the French arrived to help save the day. And that’s also the situation of the beleaguered humans fighting the alien Overlords and their Skitter minions for the right to live on planet Earth in the TNT drama Falling Skies. Returning Sunday, June 9, for a third season, Falling Skies stars Noah Wyle as Tom Mason, a widowed father and former history professor who finds himself having to put the lessons of the Founding Fathers into action as leader of the fighting 2nd Massachusetts Militia Regiment. When we last left Tom, the elder two (Drew Roy, Connor Jessup) of his three sons had fallen under alien influence to varying degrees, youngest son Matt (Maxim Knight) was growing up fast, and Tom and love Anne Glass (Moon Bloodgood) had just learned they were expecting. “It’s a biological necessity for the survival of the species,” says Wyle of the anticipated blessed event. “There’s a certain air of sobriety about bringing a child into this particular world. But nonetheless, it’s necessary. “It consummates the relationship between Tom and Anne. They’ve healed themselves from their grief and what they’ve lost and are committed to starting anew. It’s a huge turning point in their relationship.” And despite his protestations to the contrary last season, Tom has also, like George Washington before him, answered not only the military but the political

call of his nation. “When we find him this year,” Wyle says, “he is in fact the president of the United States, which is 14 square blocks around Charleston, South Carolina. It’s more of a ceremonial title. He’s gone back on everything he said he wanted to do at the end of last season, and we find him in a completely different place.” Tom has also made an alliance with a new race of aliens, the Volm, who have shown up and offered their assistance. Says series executive producer Remi Aubuchon, “I thought it would be nice if, all of a sudden, it looked like we were doomed with the Overlords, and how fun it would be if we had the French to come help us, only they’re aliens. “I don’t want to spoil everything, but I think what’s fun about the parallels is we never really quite knew what France’s secret objectives were, if there were any. But if you’re being pummeled to death with superior weapons, it’s always good to have someone who has a big stick as well.” The Volm’s General Lafayette is called “Cochise,” and he exists in more than just pixels. “Initially,” says Wyle, “it was going to be this sort of a CGI-designed alien, then they thought, ‘Let’s do ourselves a favor and cast us an actor to play the part, then we can digitize it. So we had something threedimensional to work with. 15

An Evening of Athletic Entertainment A large standing room only crowd gathered at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on Saturday night, to witness the biggest track and field event in the 43 – year history of the BVI Athletics Association, with participants from 17 countries in attendance. The inaugural BVI Twilight Invitational—a one day area permit meet which replaced the 2 day BVI Invitational that ran from 1971-2010, was run in conjunction with the Leeward Islands Jr. Invitational and featured professional athletes from across North America and the Caribbean. The history making competition launched the BVI as the newest member in the NACAC Area (North America, Central America & Caribbean) to host such an event behind Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Martin, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands. Here though, fans got two meets in one— which made it completely different to the others on the circuit. From the time Guadeloupe’s Sareena Carti crossed the line in the Leewards Invitational Girls 400m in 54.53 seconds the tone had been set with the first competition record and ended with Canada’s Women’s 4x100m Relay running 43.97 seconds, the fastest time women have ever run in the territory. This marks a new All Comers Record—one of six on the night of the professional side of the meet. Carti’s time led to 10 Leewards Jr. Invitational records. Jamaica’s Particia Hall established two records among the professional females in the 200 and 400m with times of 22.93 and 51.34 seconds respectively. Then there was St. Kitts and Nevis’ Kim Collins—at 37 years the oldest in the field returning to the territory for the first time in 19 years. She demolished the 100m All Comers Record of 10.45 seconds established by Anguilla’s Zharnel Hughes last year with a run of 10.19.

“This meet is a great idea and a great atmosphere. We want people to understand that you can see world-class performances here, although not everybody has money to go to the World Championships in Russia, you can still have people of that caliber competing here. It also gives motivation to the younger athletes to excel,” Collins said. Local fans had something to cheer about when the Leewards segment only 3-peat winner Taylor Hill, who narrowly edged teammate L’Tisha “Lea” Fahie in the 100 and 200m respectively, teamed with Fahie, Jonel Lacey and Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses: That not only broke the meet record but established a new National Youth Record for athletes U18, with a time of 46.62 seconds. Trevia Gumbs' Shot Put toss of 14.03m qualified her for next month’s IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine—a similar feat accomplished by St. Kitts’ Kimberly Liburd when she cut the sand at 5.96m in the Long Jump. Thanks to all who contributed in anyway to making the event a resounding success. 17

Weekly Suduko

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
