This Week’s Feature Story
EHR Learning Centre Celebrates 40 For a group of eager and happy children, somehow smiling through their disabilities, this coming Tuesday, June 18th at Treasure Isle Hotel will be like a “prom night.” The culmination of a year of 40th anniversary celebrations for the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, will include a formal dinner, awards ceremony and a commemorative booklet. “Although it won’t be an actual prom, it will be a dress up formal night for the youths, teachers and alumni,” said Principle, Vansittart Huggins. The school, which is now located at John’s Hole just down from the Red Cross building, was originally birthed through the Red Cross in 1972 to fill the community’s need for a facility to serve children with disabilities. It was located in a small building in MacNamara and was christened the Fort Charlotte Children’s Learning Centre. The school moved to its present location in 1977 and a year later was renamed after the schools first principal, Eslyn Richiez, who along with her only assistant Alice Leonard faithfully kept the school going for a number
of years until other teachers were employed. Today there are six full time teachers as well as a guidance counselor and music teacher, who come in twice a week. The school has maintained an enrollment of close to 20 students, presently ranging in age from five years to 20 years old. “We follow the same National Educational Curriculum as the public schools, but we modify it for our needs, “ explains Mrs. Huggins. There is also a basic enrichment program, which draws out the abilities of the children, developed by an Israeli Professor named Feuerstein that the school uses with great success. “The school recently decided to develop a “reading garden” on their grounds. So plans were made to get some tables with umbrella covers and set up other small picnic tables under two mango trees, so the children could experience reading in a quiet outdoor setting. The outdoor grounds also have a small garden, where the children learn gardening skills, as well as playground equipment. One of the things that Principal Huggins is most proud about is her staff. ”I always brag about my teachers, I have never seen such a dedicated group. They all bring something different to the table and work as a real team.” This Ruby Anniversary for the HER Learning Center with a gala event planned sounds like it is sparkling already. – Jane Bakewell

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
I Don’t Want Children
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, I am in my thirties and I have only been married a year and almost every single person I meet asks me when I am going to get a child. From my family, to friends, even people at work. You need to let people know that not everybody wants children and they need to back off. I am fed-up. They make it seem like something is wrong with me and my husband or that we are selfish to not want any harassing children! –Name withheld
making a purposeful decision that you do not have the temperament or the means to raise children or you want to devote your life to caring in other ways, is not selfish. Now back to you, writer. I have done my part and delivered your message, now you must do your part too. Stop being thin skinned and stop getting angry at people for asking what they are used to; it would be emotionally exhausting for you to blow your top every time someone asked you something you did not like. Also, your “harassing children” comment is just as insensitive as what people say to you. You were once a child and there are many precious children who their parents consider to be a gift. So don’t do what you are accusing others of which is being one-sided. Let persons know you’d rather not discuss it, or it’s not in your immediate plans or something else that is polite and cuts the conversation short. For your family who expect a bit more, let them know you and your husband are comfortable with your decision and you appreciate their support and understanding.
Hello there, You have to admit that many people follow the pattern of getting married in their twenties or thirties and then shortly after having a baby; so it’s what people are used to. Think of it as them wanting what they think is best for you and not as them being nosey or making you seem selfish. I will do my best to follow your instructions to let people know to back off. So to our readers, please exercise tact and sensitivity as not everyone wants children. Also, when you are asking and the person has been trying desperately, your pressuring them can be frustrating. Also, choosing not to have a child is not an automatic indicator of selfishness – many people have children and cannot adequately care for them or ill-treat them and that is selfish. However,

Supporting Local Artists The BVI is blessed with some amazingly talented artists. The tropical setting is hard to beat, sunsets and sunrises can be breathtaking and there is no lack of inspiration with colorful flowers and a cultural mix of colorful people. Art in the islands can be seen in government buildings, in offices and in private collections, outdoors on walls like Fahie Hill on the Ridge Road or on the wall across from the Methodist Church on Chapel Hill in East End. Collections of local artists work can be seen at The Gallery on Main Street and shows are often held at the Sugar Works Museum in Lower Estate. Recently, on a “writer’s assignment,” I was visiting the Craft Alive Village to see the new expansion and talk with the local vendors. At the end of several hours there I stopped in to one of the colorful wooden buildings to visit painter Joseph Hodge in his Asanté Studio. It was nice to take a break, look at his artwork
Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
and observe his conversations with friends and potential customers, who flowed in and out. Joseph sat at the open door on a chair with a small painting in his lap, his palette just to his left on a table and worked deftly on a landscape scene while cajoling those walking by to come on in. I have admired Joseph Hodge’s work for sometime. Many of his pieces depict a time gone by in Virgins Island life, when fishermen ruled and farmers worked the land, when village life was simple and everyone knew each other’s families. I always admired his ability to depict light on water, the way he captured capping waves and their movement, and had wanted a Joseph Hodge painting of the sea for some time. As I looked around I saw a painting of a fisherman pulling up his fish pot, the water had the light dancing off it and the magenta and purple hues of a sunset blanketed the sky in the background. This was my day. It was a done deal. I knew this was my painting. For those of you who have tarried like I did with that “someday” approach, I encourage you to get out and support local artists. Visit Asante Studio or stop in The Gallery on Main Street, which is having a massive moving sale through the end of June. Your favorite artist’s work could soon be hanging on your wall as well.

Identity Thief tives request a mug shot and realize their mistake. When the police refuse to offer any help, Sandy realizes that his only choice is to catch the imposter himself and bring her back to Denver to face justice and clear his name. Sandy convinces his employers to give him one week to lure Diana back to Denver. He cooks up an elaborate sting operation that will trick the crook into confessing her crimes and clearing his name. Unfortunately, this wily thief isn't going down without a fight, and with a grizzly “skip tracer” (bounty hunter) (Robert Patrick) and a pair of vicious gangsters (Génesis Rodríguez and T.I.) determined to get the fake Sandy first – every step along the way will be a struggle.
In Identity Thief Sandy Patterson, a Colorado businessman (Jason Bateman), is tricked by Diana (Melissa McCarthy) a Floridia con artist who dupes her mark into sharing his vital statistics (name, date of birth, credit card number) over the phone. Diana the identity thief has spending habits that threatens Sandy’s job, his family and his future. Sandy a mild-mannered Denver accountant with a gorgeous wife (Amanda Peet), two precocious kids, and a selfish boss (Jon Favreau), who is swindling him at every turn. Sandy and his wife are already struggling to make ends meet and with a new baby on the way – every little bit counts Sandy’s thrown a lifeline by an entrepreneurial colleague (John Cho) starting his own company. Sandy is offered a better salary, a vice president’s title and a corner office. It all sounds too good to be true. Unfortunately, before Sandy can move in to the corner office, he’s told that his credit scores are in the toilet and before he can become the vice president at the new company and manage billions of dollars for clients, he needs to clear his name. Fortunately Sandy is in luck; after the unrepentant Florida fraudster (McCarthy), who stole his identity causes a stir in a club and misses her court date, Sandy is arrested and promptly released when detec13

The All American Sailor Of all the territory’s athletes who have matriculated at Colleges and Universities across the length and breadth of the United States in various sports over the years, only two can lay claim to earning All America Honors in their respective sport for three successive years. Roger Williams University Hawks Sr. sailor, Alec Anderson closed out his stellar sailing career with the distinction of earning a third All America Honor. He joined track and field athlete Chantel Malone as the territory’s only two collegians to accomplish this feat. Anderson, a former Cedar School student helped the Hawks to a seventh place finish in both the Inter Collegiate Sailing Association Coed Championships and the team racing championships, closing out his college career at the end of May. The championships were held in St. Petersburg, Florida. Anderson became only the third sailor in the Hawks’ storied sailing history to accomplish the feat including St. Thomas’ Cy Thompson’s run in 2009, 2010 and 2011. He was also a finalist for the Everett B. Morris College Sailor of the Year Award. “I’ve been extremely blessed and I’m very satisfied of how I did at Roger Williams,” Anderson said. “Sailing being one of the staple sports at Roger Williams, as a sailor, it was always nice having the support from the school. This really drove us and we always had something to prove, we are always trying to accomplish new objec-
tives that the school had for the sailing team.” Anderson who spent many afternoons on the water in the Sir Francis Drake Channel after classes at Cedar practicing his craft, said he was lucky to be part of the Hawks’ team. They were ranked first in the country; first time they qualified for team nationals with a lot of other firsts. “It was really cool to be part of that as well as doing well individually, receive good academics and all in all it has been a really good four years,” he noted. “It has helped me to be in the position I need to be in going forward towards an Olympic Games campaign.” Anderson’s returning to the territory and wasting no time off the water. He’s gearing up for a training session with sailing guru, St. Thomas’ Chris Rosenberg, at month’s end. “Chris is one of the better watermen. If he’s not on a wakeboard, he’s on a kite board. If he’s not on a kite board he’s on a surfboard. If he’s not on a surf board he’s on a wind surfer – he’s always doing something on the water,” Anderson pointed out. “He’s super technical and the boat I’ve chosen to pursue is extremely high performance and a highly physical boat. The concept of dinghy sailing and smaller sailboat sailing, still apply but are not a prevalent. If anyone is young enough, is flexible enough and has the technical background to do something like this, it’s Chris. I’m up for the challenge.”

Weekly Suduko
The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
