Mango Madness at Noel Lloyd Park and many will sport names you have never seen in local supermarkets such as: Boarhog, Cutlass, Bulltone, Rocky and Touch-me-not, to name a few. There will also be a mango bread competition with judging in categories such as flavor, creativity, originality and presentation. In addition a new competition has been added this year and that is the breadfruit drink. “This year we decided to highlight mango and breadfruit as the two main crops of the festival,” Mrs. Fahie- Forbes says. The breadfruit, she explained, has good nutritional value. It is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium while getting high points for dietary fiber, potassium and Vitamin C. The breadfruit drink, which is primarily made from the ripe fruit, cream or milk, sugar and vanilla essence will be judged on flavor, consistency, color and presentation. Aside from the varietal mango display, there will be other locally grown produce showcased as well as crafts, food, and merchandise fashioned from parts of the mango tree. For children there will be a mango eating contest, face painting and games. For adults wanting to learn more about fruit propagation there will be a session teaching air layering and grafting. It is a fruitful festival to be sure, come on out and celebrate what we produce right here in the BVI.
This is a time of the year we get to celebrate one of the islands’ most abundant and sought after fruits. Luscious, sweet, savory, thick and juicy are just some of the ways to describe the “Majestic Mango.” Dangling from large arching trees often close to roadways, just getting to this fruit involves maneuvering a mango picker on a long pole, but the fruity prize is certainly worth the effort. All the more reason to get down to this year’s Mango Array and Tropical Fruit Festival to be held on Friday July 12th from 10am to 6pm at the Noel Lloyd Park. It promises to be a fun-filled event with the focus and activities surrounding what Deputy Chief Agricultural Officer and event coordinator, Arona-Fahie Forbes calls the “Queen of the Crop.” Local cultivators of mango will share their varieties with the community

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
I Don’t Know How To Say No
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, I am writing to get some advice because I don’t know how to say no to people, especially men and I do things that I regret after. Last week, a guy I have known for a while gave me a ride home and I ended up allowing him to come in the house because I did not want to be ungrateful. Then there is a guy at work who talks rude things with me and I get uncomfortable but I don’t know how to tell him to stop. –Flowergirl
with you, let them know that you are not interested in that conversation and keep moving. You have a right to protect your emotional self from anything that has the potential to steal your joy and your sense of inner peace. True friends will respect you, observe your boundaries and add positivity to your life. The persons that you are trying to please are not doing that. If someone walks away from you because you have high standards and live by certain principles, then let them go…they are not worth it. Practice saying ‘no’ in front of the mirror; you can even plan for those persons who you regularly give in to. You can say no with a smile and you can say it with an explanation if you think that is necessary. You will feel so empowered when you stand up for yourself. If you want to be happy, you must be true to yourself, protect your comfort zone and stop self-inflicting pain by allowing yourself to be a silent sufferer.
Dear Flowergirl, The cure for this is to be honest at all times. If someone is saying or doing something that you dislike or you feel is violating you, then tell them how their words and actions are making you feel and ask them to stop. It won’t be easy at first, but with practice it becomes more natural. If you don’t complain, the person is likely to keep doing it again. Then, when you can’t take it anymore you either implode by becoming very depressed or developing migraines, etc. or you explode by becoming violently angry and lashing out at someone, maybe not even the person who hurt you in the first place. Practice setting boundaries. If someone gives you a ride, when you get out, thank them and keep moving. If someone starts an inappropriate discussion

Quartet (Cissy Robson), who is slowly slipping into senility. Pauline and Wilf, performed with Jean and Reginald in Rigoletto and it is their goal to reconcile the couple so the four can all perform a scene from the opera at the financially ailing Beecham House’s annual gala. The reunion of this quartet would be a show-stopper and would almost certainly make the gala a financial success. In charge of the gala is Cedric Livingstone, who holds court over Beecham House’s residents like a petty monarch. Making the gala a success is of primary importance to him and he is relentless in his pursuit of this goal. Cedric, though, is only one of many competing egos at this retirement home of faded glory. The movie is the directorial debut of 75-year-old actor Dustin Hoffman and is based on a play by David Harwood (who also wrote the screenplays for The Pianist and The Dresser). You don’t have to be a classical music buff or even an opera fan to enjoy Quartet. In one scene, Reginald is lecturing a group of secondary school students on the similarities of opera and rap. Both opera and rap, he says, are about expressing intense emotion through song. The unexpected notion inspires one young teen to compose a rap song about opera on the spot, delighting the other students and bringing home Reginald’s point. Many of the musicians at the home are portrayed by real life stars of yesterday, including opera singer Gwyneth Jones and jazz pianist Jack Honeyborne. At the closing credits, photos of the musicians from both the present and the past flash on the screen. It is a fitting note on which to end a pitch-perfect movie.
A light-hearted confection of a film centered around a home for retired musicians, Quartet brims over with the joy of music and a zest for life. In what amounts to an encore performance, some of the globe’s top opera, classical and jazz musicians reside at Beecham House, named after the famed British conductor. Located in a genteel and rambling estate in the English countryside, Beecham House offers both a refuge and a stage for these aging musical stars. Whether it’s an impromptu chamber trio playing in the garden or an opera singer practicing an aria in the lounge, Beecham House rings out with musical grace and harmony. That is until Jean Horton (played by the imperious Maggie Smith) moves into the home. Once one of the world’s greatest opera singers, she is now bitter and cynical, no longer sure of her prodigious talents. As it also happens her ex-husband Reginald Paget (Tom Courtenay) is also a resident and it soon becomes obvious that they share a history that they both would prefer to forget. Sharing the limelight at Beecham House are two other opera greats – the irascible Wilf Bond (Billy Connolly), a charming womanizer who loves nothing better than to make a pass at a woman no matter what her age, and the vivacious Pauline Collins 13

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
