This Week’s Feature Story by Jane Bakewell

The BVIs First Soca Monarch Boss explained. One set of finalists fall under the title “Groovy” and their rhythms are slower with a more laid-back tempo. Seven finalists made the grade in this category, including two women, with the Soca names – Makisha, winning with her song “Sumtin I Could Work With” and Keybe singing “All in All.” Other colorful sounding names and songs that won include; Nazarene with his song “Big Bum,” and Tino with “Facebook Mashup My Relationship.” The other category is called “Power” and represents a much more rapid beat with an electrifying rhythm. All men won in this competition with names like Ras Beach singing “Good and Bad” and Daddy Pit with his song “Fire in de Whole.” “We will have three judges – all of them experienced musicians,” Boss noted, “two from the BVI and one from overseas.” The songs will be judged on melody, lyrics, arrangement and vocal performance. Showtime Band, for which Boss is the lead singer, will be the backup band for the Soca Monarch Competition held on Wednesday, July 31st at 8pm in the Festival Village. The evening’s close out band will be Soca legend’s, Pumpa from St. Croix. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and can be purchased at Radio Tron Electronics or Quomar Trading.

During Festival celebrations, the BVI has enjoyed countless Calypso competitions –crowning both Calypso Kings and Queens over the years. But this year another musical genre gets to name its reigning Monarch and that will be first ever Soca Monarch. Soca is a musical tradition well-known on other Caribbean islands and this year organizer Eustace “Boss” Freeman” felt there are enough qualified Soca musicians to host a BVI competition. The 14 finalists were chosen at the end of June in a Soca “Sound-off” held at Club Opium in Baugher’s Bay. Soca’s roots are Caribbean coming originally out of Trinidad in the late 60s, where Calypsonian artist Garfield Blackman, later called “Ras Shorty”, experimented with fusing calypso with “local chutney” – the music of Trinidad’s East Indian population. His hit song “Shanti Om” caught on and the Soca name evolved from a combination of the sounds of Soul and Calypso. “We chose our finalists from two categories,”

the legal papers? Are you willing to have a “stranger” in your space knowing that there might be habits you don’t like, personality clashes and her friends or family might come to visit? What is her background and why doesn’t she want to live with her own family? Let your son know this is a big decision. He is giving up some of his privacy and freedom because whereas before, home was the place to come to get a break from everyone, if he has a live-in girlfriend, there is no such place to go to. Also, you see a different side of the person when you are living with them, so he would have to be prepared to adapt to whatever is revealed. I know I’ve asked more questions than given answers, but it is such a personal and important decision that I want you to weigh it very carefully. Young people living together are a big commitment on both their parts and you as a mother must do your best to guide your son accordingly.

Dear Koren, I am a widowed mother of three children. The two older ones have moved out, so only the youngest boy who is 24 lives with me and he doesn’t really give any problems. I met his girlfriend twice and she seems okay. Now he is asking me if he can bring her to live with us. We have a three bedroom house and he helps with the bills and all that, so I know it won’t be a financial hardship on me, but what do you think of the idea? –Mom Dear Mom, You have to think of what value systems you maintain in your home, like, do you consider it inappropriate for men and women to live together before marriage? Then you have to consider the pros and cons of such a decision with your son so he understands that while he has the companionship he is seeking, he also has the responsibility to some extent of being accountable for her. Is she old enough to make the decision to live with a man? Is he mature enough to handle a living situation that would change the nature of the relationship to one almost like a marriage, just not with

Lighten Up and Dance when just about everyone takes off from work, but there are an additional two weeks of lead-up and wind-down activities. Festival commemorates the Emancipation Proclamation of 1834, a serious theme observed in a joyful fashion. Festival was traditionally marked by church picnics, horse racing, water sports and scratch band music – with the parade added on in the 1950s. As the years went by, more activities were tacked on – nightly music at the Village, pre-dawn dancing in the streets, calypso contests, beauty pageants and car shows as well as the Carrot Bay Fiesta which ensures that the Festival spirit carries on for a few days more. Other Caribbean nations have some form of carnival, most notably Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro, but for the most part holidays in western nations are lacking in spirit. When it comes to holidays I think much of the world could learn a lesson from the Virgin Islands – lighten up and dance! The BVI may be a small country, but it knows how to celebrate a holiday in a very large way.

Strings of triangular flags wave in the breeze above the streets of Road Town and a stand of rainbow-hued food shacks have sprouted up at Festival Village. Festival officially kicks off today with the opening of the Village and islanders are revving up to celebrate the event with parades, dance, music and a bevy of cultural activities. Where I come from in the northeast of the United States, nothing compares to the sheer joie de vivre of the BVI’s August Festival. The US has holidays, of course, but they tend to lack pizzazz. Memorial Day on May 31st, for instance, commemorates the country’s fallen servicemen and women with parades, speeches, barbecues and markdown prices at the mall. Greater hoopla is associated with the Fourth of July, which celebrates American independence from England with more picnics, barbecues, speeches and sales at the mall – with fireworks adding a brighter note. When I first came to the BVI the Yacht Club celebrated Guy Fawkes night. This singular British holiday commemorates a failed attempt to blow up Parliament in the 1600s with bonfires and burning straw effigies of “the Guy.” It seems vaguely sadistic, but my husband says that English kids love it. Still, it’s not exactly a joyous occasion. None of these holidays come close to August Festival. Not only are there three official holidays,

The Gatekeepers This political documentary based on the IsraeliPalestinian conflict will be unsettling for some, but eye–opening for others. The film is narrated through six former heads of the Shin Bet (the Israeli Security Agency) and follows the historical narrative of Israel’s efforts from the Six Day War through the rise of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad to protect Israel’s borders and cities. The narrators are amazingly candid and selfcritical, as well as questioning decisions made by their political head honchos. It is not a one-sided look, but a chance to see the aching dilemma posed by conflicting ideologies on both sides. The film has a serious air to it, with a monotone background and black and white footage from satellite intelligence cameras seeking to track and target terrorists. Each security agent who speaks about the incidents that happened under his watch, answers questions from the off-camera interviewer and is often uncomfortable with the sometimes, brutal reality of the information he provides. They each are faced with the difficult proposition that a strike might kill civilians, but if they do not, it might leave Israel vulnerable to assault. One narrator describes a “mission-accomplished” pride (akin to the US Navy Seals taking out Osama Bin Laden) through the targeting of one major terrorist, in whose hands they planted a cell-phone bomb, which killed him alone in his room. However, most of the agents realize that when it comes to national security there cannot be a strict morality. One of the narrators describes being uncomfortable at a table with a

Palestinian who called him a terrorist. He realized looking from both sides that “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.” The documentary gives a surprisingly uncensored look into Israeli intelligence and shows the futility of the continued killing of extremists, which never ends terrorism. It also depicts Israel’s own problem with the far-right settler movement, which contributed to the assassination of peacemaker and Israel’s fifth Prime Minister, Yitzak Rabin by an Israeli extremist, angered that he signed the Oslo Accords. The film clearly shows the high stakes on both sides, with Israel’s desire for peace being answered with terrorism and the Palestinian desire for a state met with encroaching settlers. The documentary leaves you with no answers but shows that a Palestinian self-determination somehow must be intertwined with Israel’s right to live in peace. 13

Inside The Run For The Medal In every track meet, there’s always someone who finds themselves in that dreaded position – just missing qualifying for a semifinal, final or a medal by finishing fourth or even third. They automatically miss advancing from one of the two qualifying spots based on the number of heats in the event. During the recently concluded 8th IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, Taylor Hill ran her heart out in the 100m heats, finishing in 12.10 seconds—in a third place tie with the Czech Republic’s Veronika Palickova. Officials gave the nod to Palickova after viewing a photo finish of the race.
