Culture and Tradition at Festival Festival time in the BVI is a time of remembering historical and cultural roots. Aside from the central theme of Emancipation, there is also a desire to maintain cultural traditions. Food and its preparation is a major component of cultural heritage and will be highlighted in this years festival events. A traditional Market Place Expo is planned for Friday, August 1st and Saturday, August 2nd at Sir Olva George’s Plaza starting at 11am. The atmosphere will be turned into a market place evocative of the 1950’s era, replete with stalls loaded with local produce including ground provision and herbs. Organizer and City Manager, Janice Braithwaite–Edwards remarked that this Market Place is a demonstration of culture. “Your culture is your lifestyle,” she explained, “and these forms of education help islanders to retain a cultural identity.” Don’t miss the Cultural Food Fair at the Noel Lloyd Park, on Friday August 1st, where there will be samplings of many local dishes. The fair will begin at 6:15am offering breakfast with a menu of bush tea, patties, cream of wheat, salt fish and Johnnycakes. The official opening will be at 9am with music by steel pan bands – The Shooting Stars and Miracle Touch and Fungi music by Four Strong along with performances by the Heritage Dancers and the Mocko
Jumbies. More local dishes will be on sale throughout the afternoon including doved pork, whelk stew, steam fish and coconut dumplings. Local beverages include coconut water and fresh squeezed cane juice. Stay around for the Happy Hour beginning at 5pm when prices for food and drinks will go down, but the festival entertainment will continue on. For a maritime traditional event head over to the Road Town Jetty for the 10th annual Festival Sloop Shootout with races on both Saturday, August 3rd and Tuesday, the 6th at 11am. This year, four-time winner the Premier Hon. Orlando Smith will be defending his trophy against His Excellency Governor Boyd McCleary or his representative. In addition the four sloops– Sea Moon, Moon Beam, Youth Instructor and Intrepid will be on display, anchored at the Jetty, for a close-up look at the craftsmanship of BVIs traditional boat builders.

If he was not willing to try to work things out, then that is a negative factor, because a relationship has to have two persons who are willing to give a 100 percent. Could it be that when you were together he was not 100 percent invested in the relationship and that is why things fell apart? Are you using this new guy as a rebound relationship or do you have genuine feelings for him? If you really like him and think that there is a chance for more, then go ahead and give it your best shot. If you are still in love with your ex though, then that could be a problem. As much as you loved your ex, the relationship cannot be one sided and if he was not willing to try before and up to this point has not tried to reconcile with you, then you have to move on. You must love yourself and recognize your worth as a partner. Give yourself time to heal and don’t cling to a past that has made you miserable, when there are so many possibilities for the future.
Dear Koren, I was with my ex for a few years and broke it off with him last November because he was very selfish. I didn’t mind spending money on him, but when I was not working, he complained to give me money. I tried to see if we could work it out but he didn’t seem interested. On the other hand, no person is perfect and no matter who we love, it is likely that we will find something about that person that we wish was not there. Are you willing to let selfishness be that one thing? Is there enough good in the relationship to overlook that fault? That is a question that only you can answer. You also have to consider if you are giving him the label correctly; if he was not able to help you financially, but he makes himself available in other ways, then the issue might not be selfishness, but just money. If however, he is stingy with money when he can afford it, with his time, with his

Summer Fruits A few weeks ago we had a grand celebration at the Noel Lloyd Park for the Mango Array & Tropical Fruit Festival. The festival, which has become an annual event here in the BVI, displays the many varieties of mangoes available in the BVI. It also allows the local cultivators of mangoes to share their varieties with the community. While the mangoes got the main spotlight, I especially love summer time because I get to enjoy some of my other favorite fruits that are seasonal and are only available this time of the year. Some of my favorites; all grown locally, are the genip, guava, papaya, sugar apples and breadfruit. The Genip, is somewhat like a cross between a lychee nut and a lime, it has a tight and thin but rigid layer of skin, traditionally cracked by the teeth. Usually in the summer on every corner you can find someone selling genips. Another favorites of mine is of course the mango. There are many varieties, as displayed during the mango festival, with the most unusual of names. But my favorite is the grafted mangoes, which are usually thick and juicy. Some other summer favorites that I generally look forward to are guava, papaya and sugar apple but we don’t usually see them until later in the summer. The sugar apple has a sweet flesh, white to light yellow, and resembles and tastes like custard. The edible portion coats the seeds generously and has a very distinct, sweet-smelling fragrance. It is slightly grainy, a bit slippery, very sweet and very soft.

The guava much like the sugar apple has a rough outer skin, often with a bitter taste, or soft and sweet. The skin can be any thickness, and they are usually green before maturity, but become yellow when ripe. Guava pulp may be sweet or sour tasting something between a pear and strawberry. The inside is a deep pink with the seeds in the central pulp similar to the sugar apple. The breadfruit is well known through out the Caribbean. It is a large round fruit, with a rigid outer skin. The interior is cream colored or yellow and pasty, and sweetly fragrant. The seeds are irregularly oval, rounded at one end, pointed at the other and dullbrown with darker stripes. During the summer you can usually enjoy a nice piece of roasted breadfruit with some fish or any local dish. So this summer be sure to enjoy the rest of the summer season and the BVIs best kept secrets our tropical fruits!

Festival Highlights
Photo exhibit through the end of September. There are photos mounted on the wall of all the Festival Queens from the first queen, Ivy Chinnery of Jost Van Dyke in 1954 through 2012. Also highlighted are historical documents including a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1834 to slave records from the Former British Colonial Dependencies including a list of slave compensation claims, for plantation owners detailing what they would receive for each slave. Colorful paintings of festival dancers also grace the walls by artists, Aileen Malcolm and Jane Clatworthy.
The real start-off to the Festival events begins with its historical roots and the VI Heritage Month Committee encourages all to remember the “reason for the season” by participating on Sunday, August 4th in the Freedom March. The march commences at 3pm opposite of Government House and winds down Waterfront Drive to the Sunday Morning Well, where at 4pm there will be an Emancipation Service. Later that same evening is the highly anticipated Miss BVI Pageant held at 8pm at the Multi-Purpose Complex, where four talented contestants compete for the crown and a chance to be the 59th Festival Queen. A Sunrise Service will be held the following day, Monday August 5th at the Admin Complex at 7am. The festive August Monday Parade with dancers, floats and troupes in Road Town. Early risers will however already have begun their day in the wee morning hours at 4am for the Rise and Shine Tramp. Tuesday, August 6th will see the traditional Horse Races at the Thomas Ellis Downs. Tuesday also marks the opening of the East End/Long Look Juliette Penn Festiville. The fun continues at the Carrot Bay Fiesta Thurs–Sat (See story on page 8).
Myett’s Fun Race All Paddle Board enthusiasts are encouraged to come out on Sunday, August 11th at 9am to register for a fun SUP race. The Triangle Course race officially kicks off at 10am followed by a Fun Relay Race at 12pm. There will be breakfast and brunch specials plus a DJ Beach Party in the afternoon. There is no need to own a board, as there will be plenty to use from Breeze Paddle and Surf on hand.

The Perks of Being A Wallflower This riveting coming of age movie is based on the novel written by Stephen Chbosky about 15-year-old Charlie (Logan Lerman) who is trying to cope with his first love as well as his dark and disturbing past. Charlie is an endearing and naïve freshman, who is struggling to fit in at his new school but before long, he is taken under the wings of the beautiful Sam (Emma Watson) and her gregarious, gay stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller) and the three soon become best friends. He is soon accepted into their wider circle of friends, especially after an evening where he eats a pot-brownie and entertains the crowd with his witty observations. One of the best scenes in this movie though is when the three friends are driving home through a tunnel to the sound of David Bowie’s Heroes. Sam is standing up in the back of the truck swaying and singing to the music and Charlie is mesmerized. He quickly realizes he is falling for Sam, however as she has a boyfriend, he settles with being good friends. Then, Charlie unwittingly gets himself a girlfriend of his own when one of Sam’s friends, MaryElizabeth (Mae Whitman) tells him that he is her boyfriend after they kiss one night. Fate soon steps in when Charlie is challenged to kiss the prettiest girl in the room. Charlie kisses Sam rather than MaryElizabeth, both girls are enraged and Patrick tells him to stay away until things cool down. After a while, Charlie redeems himself, Sam gets accepted to university and dumps her cheating
boyfriend. After her going away party, they have a heart to heart and she asks Charlie why he never asked her out and the two lock lips again. When Sam leaves the next day, Charlie is distraught. His deeply troubling past also finally catches up with him and he suffers a breakdown, ending up in hospital. The last scene shows the three friends driving into the tunnel again some months later and the song Heroes is playing. This time though, Charlie jumps into the back of the truck, kisses Sam and dances with her as they drive off into the night. Overall it is a great film, tackling complicated and difficult issues. It has an awesome soundtrack and most of all shows how people can get by – with a little help from their friends. 13

2013 Festival Headliners performing on August 2nd at the Festival Village. This group formed in 2005 and has maintained a steady rise on the musical charts with hits like “Wotless” from their fourth album of the same title, which was the single most popular song during Trinidad’s carnival season in 2011. Of the four male band members, three are brothers including lead vocalist Kes and the other is affectionately known as a “brother from another mother.” Their sound has been dubbed “Caribbean Pop” and is a fusion of rock riffs, dancehall, island beats, soca and reggae. Lead singer Kes, says their goal is to bring “something different to the musical landscape.” Just released, their 6th album “Wired” is already garnering positive reviews. Kes the Band has performed at major festivals and toured globally, so Friday night’s performance should be a real showcase of their original talent. A Kingston-based Dancehall singer with a large following is Richie Spice (Richell Bonner), who will be one of the headliners on Saturday, August 3rd. Coming out of a musical family Richie used to open for his brothers, Snatcher Dog and vocalist Spanner Banner, as well as DJ Pliers of Chakademos and Pliers. In the 90s he released his first single “Killing a Sound” from the “Out of the Blue” album on the Island Jamaican label, followed by his first hit, “Groovin’ My Girl.” Richie Spice has taken his sounds to such prestigious platforms as the Reggae Superstars. With these diverse musical stars, this year’s festival is sure to delight every musical fan that flocks to the Village for rhythmic evenings under the stars.
This year’s Festival musical performers are a real “mash-up” of musical styles and genres – from local DJ’s to Latin bands, from Reggae to Soca with a little Calypso in between to set the musical tone. This Caribbean musical callaloo draws on artists hailing from Dominica, Grenada, Trinidad, and St. Lucia to name a few of the islands on the roll call. A premier cultural reggae artist, who will be performing on Friday, August 2nd, is Queen Afrika, who is originally from Jamaica but now resides in the US. Daughter of Ska music legend, Derrick Morgan, who worked with Reggae icons Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, she made her mark on the reggae scene in the 60s and 70s, eventually joining Flames Productions. Her two popular hits “Randy” and “Boxers and Stockings” helped to establish her smooth and soulful style. Her lyrics reflect her strong social conscience and Rastafarian religious orientation. Queen Afrika is sure to light up the stage with reggae rhythms that also bring a message. A Camping Experience Sports camps are always popular and First District Representative, Hon. Andrew Fahie is ensuring his area is taking a leading role to enrich youngsters in his district. For three weeks, 43 youngsters participated in a basketball camp that wrapped up on Saturday evening with participants demonstrating before family and supporters, what had been learnt at the Benjamin Romney Basketball Court in West End. The basketball camp conducted by Coaches Karl “Dub” Scatliffe, Rhennie Phipps and Irad “Cigar” Smith came about because of, “The youngster’s interest in learning about basketball and other sports,” Hon. Fahie said. The camp ran Monday through Thursdays 5 to 8 p.m. “They learnt a lot of skills,“ Hon. Fahie noted. “We saw some that couldn’t even bounce a ball and after three weeks, they were so determined, they would come before the coaches reached and even afterwards, they didn’t want to go home. Every evening we would end with a motivational talk with the children so that they could stay focused.” The motto and theme, Hon. Fahie explained, was the same – “never give up.” When schools reopen, whatever challenge they faced, they were encouraged to never give up—whether it was in their studies of English, Math, Social Studies or another course. The basketball camp also attracted a number of girls as well and Hon. Fahie was amazed with the girls’ interest in the sport. He said they will continue working with them and the boys in their age groups, 9 to 12 and 13 to 15 years old. “We will keep track of their behavior and their school work so that we can do our part to ensure that no

child loses their way,” he said. On Saturday Aug 3rd at the Benjamin Romney Basketball Court in West End, there will be a fund raising basketball game involving JTV, with proceeds benefitting the BVI’s team heading to Moscow, for the IAAF World Championships. A Kiddies Track and Field camp will run from 4 to 6 p.m. daily from August 1 to 17, hosted by Hon. Fahie, in conjunction with the BVI Athletics Association at Capoon’s Bay. The camp will be led by association Vice President, Steve Augustine an IAAF certified lecturer. “We are going to be looking at the fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing,” Augustine said. “The kids will love it because they are going to be introduced to hurdles, javelin throw, long jumping and they are going to get a taste of every event that the older athletes do. Hon. Fahie is also covering the cost for the first 50 kids from the First District for the Track and Field Kiddies camp. On August 11, a full motivational session for youngsters in all levels of school will be conducted. “We have a packed summer doing our part to improve the community – one life at a time,” he said. 17
