This Week’s Feature Story by Jane Bakewell

All Roads Lead to Showtime For a local band that formed 15 years ago, Showtime Band has garnered more than its share of awards, capping it off recently with their 7th consecutive Road March title, won at this year’s Rise and Shine Tramp (J’ouvert) during the annual Emancipation Festival celebrations. The song that had their fans shouting and dancing was “Sort Out” from their recent album “Good Over Evil.” The nine members of the band started out as schoolmates in 1999 and brought their talents together – which included guitarists, a keyboard player two singers and a female drummer. The group quickly gained popularity playing at local venues

Will Age Matter Later

Ask Koren

Dear Koren I am a 45 year old man who has been dating a 26 year old woman for the past 5 months. She is very mature and respectful and a wonderful person. I am really into her. I am really ready to settle down and start a family but I am wondering if I should worry about the age difference that will occur down the years from now. –Hopeful

self honestly and openly, so you can know what is on her dreamcard. Strong commitment means sticking to your word and being who you promise to be to each other, whether times are good or bad. Maybe she will see someone her own age 5 years from now who appears to be more attractive, but a commitment to you should make her stay. You have to stay committed when her actions or words might not seem mature enough for you or when she starts to “act her age”. Be willing to compromise. Both of you must make an effort to compromise and act in an unselfish manner. If she is willing to listen to your views and you to hers and you both don’t mind giving in somewhat to the other sometimes, then that habit can be strengthened and be useful in the coming years. While your concerns are legitimate, if the right attitude is there on both your parts and the love is genuine, then that minimizes any future concerns you might have. Really and truly, life brings no guarantees. We do the best we can with what we have; we put in our best efforts and hope that they yield positive results.

Dear Hopeful, Is age just a number? Sometimes it is, but most often it is not. It is an indication of how much experience we have, how much perspective we have gained and what stage we are at in our lives. The age difference between you and your lady is 19 years and it seems as though you are happy in spite of it. If at this point, you are meshing well as a couple, it is still relevant that you discuss future plans. After all, people change and circumstances can create change. Three of the most important things for you both when considering the future are communication, commitment and compromise. Communication enables you both to say not only what your present needs are, but also what your goals and dreams are for the future. Do you want some of the same things for yourselves as individuals and as a couple 10 years down the road? Talk about these things frankly and encourage your lady to express her-

A Name Fit For A King Choosing a name for most new parents is a challenge and many can often be seen browsing through baby name books to find the perfect one for their new bundle of joy. It is a minefield – you need to find a name that will not only suit the child as it grows from childhood to adulthood but to ensure that it will not suffer any ridicule or be prone to inappropriate nicknames through its impressionable years! Imagine then the implications when your baby is being born into the Royal Family with its plethora of protocols and traditions, not to mention the whole worlds’ media waiting with bated breath – eager to share the news. Within a few hours of the new Prince being born, I remember being in Trellis Bay and chalkboards were appearing everywhere displaying favorite boys names for people to vote for. In amongst the serious suggestions were also some rather untraditional names – my personal favorite being Will-i-am. So, almost a month ago now, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced his name as Prince George Alexander Louis, or His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge for short! The couple had clearly chosen to stick with tradition and “George” was always the most popular name with the public (and bookmakers) with names such as James and Henry also in the mix. The announcement undoubtedly pleased The Queen, whose father was also called George.

Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

However, George was not his real name as he was actually christened Albert (and known as Bertie) – but upon his Coronation he chose to reign as King George VI. The name Alexander also runs through the young prince's paternal line, as Prince Philip's grandfather was Prince Louis Alexander of Battenberg. There have been three medieval kings of Scotland named Alexander, so the name is also a nod to those north of the border. Louis is a name the young Royal shares with his father, Prince William and is thought to be in tribute to Lord Louis Mountbatten, Prince Charles’ uncle who was assassinated in 1979 and was known within the family as “Uncle Dickie”. According to most recent data, “George” was the twelfth most popular name for new baby boys in England and Wales in 2011, falling from ninth place in 2010. However, it is highly likely that the name will now find a new popularity and make its way back into the top ten in no time at all!

The Butler Director, Lee Daniels’ The Butler would be considered a historical bio-pic, but it is much more than that. It is primarily the story of an African-American man’s emotionally fraught relationship with his son set against the backdrop of America’s social revolution in the 60s and 70s. It just so happens that through this time, Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) was employed as a butler at the White House serving through eight presidents’ terms – from Truman to Reagan. The opening scenes show a rural southern cotton farm in the 1920s, where blacks were technically free but subject to the low wages and abuse of white land owners. Cecil as a young boy watches as his father is shot in cold blood for questioning his boss’s ill treatment of his wife. As a young man Cecil leaves the cotton farm to forge a new future for himself and through a series of events ends up being trained as a butler in a prestigious Washington, DC Hotel only to later be recruited for this position at the White House. He learns early on in his trade that the keys to advancement lay in “notrocking the boat” but remaining silent, while anticipating what the one he is serving may want next. Although Cecil is able from his wages to offer a comfortable middle-class lifestyle for his wife Gloria (Oprah Winfrey) and two sons, his home-life is far from idyllic with Gloria escaping into alcohol to deal with his long hours away, and his son Louis (David Oyelowo) using his college time to get involved in civil rights activism. Estranged from his son and his politics, Cecil remains the efficient butler with the “face for the white man” in place, as an almost carnival show of presidents (captured by well-known

actors) make their cameo appearances at the White House. Memorable shots of Lyndon B. Johnson (Liev Schrieber) in a toilet scene are hilarious as is Alan Rickman’s great portrayal of Ronald Reagan. However, the most poignant scenes are the cutaways from a formal state dinner, where Cecil is meticulously arranging the silver settings, to a scene where Louis and other freedom fighters are attacked by the KKK on a bus in the south and again accosted as they sit in at a lunch counter refusing to move to the “colored section.” The adage “if you speak up you die” could never ring more true and reveals why the survivalist father is so at odds with the son he loves and wants to protect. Although a bit too long and biting off way too much history than it can do justice to – The Butler powerfully portrays the evolution of a relationship between a father and son at war with how to deal with racial inequality. There is definitely Oscar-buzz for this film. 11

Right On Track Saturday evening in Capoons Bay, they came out for the final time to show what they had learnt during the Aug 1-17, BVI Athletics Association’s Kiddies Athletics Summer Camp. The group was spearheaded by BVIAA Vice President Steve Augustine, an IAAF Certified Lecturer in conjunction with Hon. Andrew Fahie, assisted by BVIAA General Secretary Delva Thomas, her daughter Kaetia Madurio and a number of coaches and parents. More than 50 participants took part, including several 3-year olds and this brought out the competitors in them all. The mini track meet featuring hurdles, a formula 1 obstacle course and relays, wrapped up the inaugural camp. “Everything went well from the opening day through the closing meet,” Augustine noted of the event that targeted 4-14 year olds. “We had the IAAF age appropriate Kiddies Packages with all the different implements that were specifically designed for kids – we had them all at the camp. And it showed on the last day of the camp what they learnt.” Augustine said after lining them up for the relays, hurdles and obstacle course, in no way shape or form, kids were scared of any of the events. “Primarily, that’s what we were all about – introducing the kids to the events with a higher level of comfort and participation and it definitely showed – the kids were all eager,” he reflected. “I think that come inter-school sports next year, when it comes to introducing different sporting events on the track, we’ll see that the comfort level of some of these kids will be a lot greater than those who have yet to experience the program.” Augustine said the camp definitely allowed for tal-

ent identification and said there’s good talent in Capoons Bay and would like to see getting some of them involved in off season work. “We have some sprinters, some pretty good throwers – a variety of children who really stood out – and again, there were the ones crossing the line in front the majority of the times,” he pointed out. The BVIAA VP said there was definitely improvement seen between day one and the end of the camp. He said on the first day, some were hesitant and scared as far as jumping and running. “By the end of the course, they were all comfortable and participated,” he noted. “I think we fulfilled that mandate as far as identifying and further developing talent.” Augustine singled out parental involvement as a key ingredient in the success of the program. “They made the job of Delva and I so much easier,” he said thanking them. “They were there literally setting up the hurdles, setting up the implements. Some even came out and helped me line the track on the day of competition. So parental participation was at an all time high—it couldn’t have been any better.” 13

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
