This Week’s Feature Story

Oktoberfest BVI Style It’s that time to slosh your steins and don your dirndls and lederhosen as the great tradition of Oktoberfest is celebrated again – the BVI way! The first will be held this weekend on 13th October at the Tortola Sports Club from 3pm where they will be hosting Oktoberfest II and a costume party. To try and recreate Munich’s famous party atmosphere they will have Bavarian Barmaids, a bratwurst lunch, custom stein mugs and a DJ pumping out tunes to get your feet tapping to the beat. Later in the month, on the 27th October, The Watering Hole will host their Oktoberfest 2012, also from 3.00pm. With $15 beer buckets served by traditionally dressed helpers, grilled boerewors, sausage sauerkraut and their special sausage pizza. A good time is guaranteed for all. Dress in costume and get $5 off the entry fee – all entries include a stein bottle holder and your first beer. Oktoberfest is the world’s largest and best-loved beer festival, held annually in Munich, Germany. The sixteenday party attracts over 6 million tipplers every year who consume 1.5 million gallons of beer! This event attracts visitors

from all over the world and the largest Oktoberfest held outside of Germany takes place in KitchenerWaterloo in Canada and one in Ohio in the US boasts half a million visitors each year. Now celebrating its 202nd year, the tradition was established in 1810, to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to the SaxonHildburghausen Princess Therese. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days. Anniversary celebrations were held annually after that and became larger and more elaborate as the years passed. Today’s Oktoberfest has worked hard to retain its essential Bavarian character. Six Munich breweries still provide the beer and thousands of Bavarians of all ages wear traditional dress not only during the opening-day parade but also on other festival days. Other Munich traditions include a carousel from 1924, gingerbread hearts iced with greetings in Bavarian and a roller coaster. Wherever in the world you are, the Oktoberfest is a living, breathing celebration of life – so don’t miss out on the BVI’s celebrations this month. – Jan Critchley

Rock the PINK When I sat down to write this weeks Island Life as usual I had no idea what I was going to write about. It’s always a matter of finding inspiration. As I was getting dressed for work one morning I instinctively reached for my breast cancer pin to wear to show my support and then there in that moment inspiration came. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). It is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities and foundations every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. As well as providing a platform for breast cancer charities to raise awareness of their work and of the disease, it is also a prime opportunity to remind women to get checked regularly for early detection. Worldwide, breast cancer comprises 22.9% of all cancers in women. Breast cancer is more than 100 times more common in women than in men, and so breast cancer in men is often times overlooked. So, men have joined together to globally establish the third week of October as "Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week."

Here at home the BVI Cancer Society is doing their part to raise awareness and support to those affected within our community. This month like most of the world the committee has a slue of events to get the community involved to raise funds and awareness. These range from the Zumba Fitness Mondays, a Candle Light Vigil to Pink Friday on October 26, where the community is encourage to wear something pink that day as a way of showing support. This is a time when we show our love to those struggling with, have struggled with or have lost a love one to this disease. It has affected my family personally as my mom is a survivor and if there is one word that might sum up the overall feeling of dealing with breast cancer it is "uncertainty." So, do what you can to help and remember early detection is the key.

Our Society’s Treasures: Caring for our elderly

Ask Koren

Last week, I answered a question about the symptoms of an elderly person from a concerned son-inlaw. If we take a moment to reflect, we will realize that our elderly folk will not always be well and will not always be here with us. Why then, do we not treasure them? For many adults, they are part of the ‘sandwich generation’ who are responsible for taking care of elderly parents as well as their own children. Life is not easy for them as they face the challenges of balancing their family, their jobs and taking care of elderly parents, all while trying to practice self-care. Some persons manage to create a balance by asking for help, minimizing stress, having their family cooperate and they have spiritual, emotional or physical support. In another scenario, some persons are so preoccupied with their own lives, that they see their elderly parents as a burden. They rarely visit, hardly involve their parents in their lives and fail to contribute financially or emotionally to their wellbeing. Yet, they show up after the demise of the elderly person, hoping to get something that they had no hand in acquiring. Our elderly folks are treasures. Some of the privileges we now enjoy so freely and take for granted, they fought for. We are benefitting from their legacy. For the more mentally agile ones, they have at their fingertips a wealth of knowledge that if we were to heed, we would avoid many common mistakes. They also have a lot of information to share about our past and the earlier way of life and through them, we can become culturally enriched and never lose our history as we can keep passing it down from generation to generation. Some of the ways to treasure our elderly are: Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

• Give them their flowers while they are with us. Tell them now what they mean to us and show it in our actions while they are alive and can appreciate our gestures. • Respect their need for autonomy. Allow them some say when decisions are to be made about them. • Utilize their wisdom. Allow them to sit on committees, ask their opinion on important matters, listen to them. They have a fountain of knowledge at their disposal. • Give them excellent medical care. They are often dealing with medical issues and they need us to ensure that they get the best possible care, so that their golden years are indeed pleasant ones. When did we become so selfish as a society that we saw the needs of our elderly as a burden? At what point did we decide to just place them in a back room and give them some food and nothing else? When did we grow so cold that we figured that caring was only the job of the hospital or nursing home? It is time for us to do better. It is time to treat our elderly, the treasures of our nation…the ones who paved the way for us, with consideration, love, respect and the honor they so deserve. We ourselves will reach that stage someday and then what? Do we have a right to expect what we were not willing to give? Send your questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com or via twitter at @korennorton 6

Arbitrage Greed, both corporate and personal, is the name of the game in Arbitrage, a slick and tense thriller starring Richard Gere as Robert Miller, a hedge fund manager teetering on the abyss. Miller has it all: a successful business, a beautiful family and lots of money. He lives in an elegant Manhattan apartment and has a handsome and altruistic wife (Susan Sarandon). His daughter Brook (Brit Marling ) helps him run his hedge fund empire, but knows little of its true inner workings. In reality, though, Miller has a mistress who is an up and coming star in the art world and he is about to lose millions on an investment he made in a Russian mining enterprise that has gone horribly wrong – so wrong that his entire empire is about to come crashing down. To cover his tracks, he is desperate to sell his company before the news gets out. Complicating this interplay of high stakes leverage and low life subterfuge is the tragic death of Miller’s mistress. Miller loses control of the car as they head off for a romantic tryst in the country. She is killed instantly, but he manages to get out of the car, and he makes the calculated decision to slip away, adding another layer to his growing web of deception. Never hesitating to use people for his own ends, Miller calls his former chauffeur’s son (Nate Parker) to come and pick him up. He is calling in a favor but even this small event has large ramifications for both him and the young man, a black youth with a record who is trying to make good. Adding to this seamy and uneasy mix is Tim Roth who plays a cynical New York cop. Sensing that Miller had been involved in his mis-

Directed by Nicholas Jarecki, son of Henry Jarecki, the owner of Guana Island, the film reflects the powerful world of high stakes finance. It is a perfect vehicle for Richard Gere who has slick and elegant down to a ‘T’. He evokes both sympathy for his plight and repugnance for his self-centered viewpoint. The movie is a morality play of sorts, and its ambiguous ending is unsettling, but as in life, sorting out the winners from the losers isn’t always easy. 13

‘Chicago Fire’ Ignites Drama for NBC By the second episode of NBC’s Chicago Fire Wednesday, Oct. 17, the characters are more nuanced – flawed yet heroic, much like real firefighters. “I think on the surface, and the way it is marketed, you see it as a firefighter show, and I think it could be perceived as anything from a procedural to an inhouse drama,” says Taylor Kinney The Vampire Diaries, who plays rescue squad Lt. Kelly Severide. “First and foremost, it is a show about characters. It is not necessarily a fire-of-the-week show. The firehouse serves as a common meeting ground for the people to get together, for the people to tell stories of their lives. “It is a lot more character-driven than I think people will expect, which I think will make it all the more rich,” Kinney says. “It takes a little bit of time, and hopefully you can empathize with the stories and characters.” Executive producer Dick Wolf, creator of the Law & Order dynasty, is behind the show, and his sensibility comes through. The emergencies and how the first responders react have the ring of authenticity, a hallmark of Wolf’s shows. In this week’s episode, a construction worker, played by veteran actor Jeffrey DeMunn, suffers an accident, and Kelly responds and befriends him. The emergency medical technicians are also at the scene. Monica Raymund (Lie to Me) plays Gabriela

Dawson, a paramedic with designs on medical school. “I describe her as she is a tough chick,” Raymund says. “She is a tough girl who has got a big heart. It is as easy as it is for her to kick some butt, but she can get her butt kicked, too. She is pretty vulnerable. I am figuring her out as we are filming. It is really enjoyable playing her.” The actors talk about how, after spending time with firefighters and EMTs, they have a better idea of necessary coping mechanisms. “They see a lot of life and death, but the way these people cope is through humor,” Raymund says. “It is fun to play that angle. It is fun to develop this relationship with our cast and laugh and joke and play pranks on each other.” All the cast members talk about how meaningful it has been to be able to spend time with firefighters and paramedics. Raymund and Lauren German, who plays Gabriela’s partner, Leslie Shay, shadowed female EMTs. “Our characters are slightly inspired by them, and we have these two great women who are textbooks for this, and helpful and amazing and knowledgeable,” Raymund says. The actors witnessed some of the horrifying moments first responders deal with. “We saw a jumper on the 10th or 12th story of a building, on the ledge, in his underwear,” Raymund says. The EMTs told her, “ ‘Oh yeah, if he falls you are going to hear a big thump.’ He did not jump. The squad came, and one of the firefighters grabbed him, and he was saved.” 15
