This Week’s Feature Story
Healthy Relationships During the month of October, we are observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month – under the theme “Love Does Not Hurt.” Ms Lorolie Connor, Gender Affairs Coordinator, said, “The theme was decided on to help the community to understand that real love is something beautiful and that you should be there to support your mate.” Unfortunately though there has been a gradual increase in the number of cases related to domestic violence and this is why the office of Gender Affairs has collaborated with various community partners to host numerous activities this month including events, radio programs and presentations to schools and colleges. This week on Friday, October 19th UMI will host a fashion show featuring House of Assembly members on the runway from 5.00pm at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Park and this will be followed on Saturday, October 20th with Purple Kite Day from 11am at Wickham’s Cay II. Later on the same evening will be a poetry night at Moods Indigo from 7pm. Later in the month, on October 26th is an
important fundraiser organized by the Tortola Ladies Club, “Dancing with the BVI Stars!” The Governor and Mrs. McCleary are sponsoring the evening at Government House which promises to be filled with great music, dancing, food and drinks and a fun TV show-inspired dancing competition. Best of all, all proceeds from the event will go directly to the Family Support Network (FSN). And what a worthy cause! The FSN is an essential nonprofit agency that is facing financial hardship. They support victims of domestic violence and their families by providing temporary shelter, clothing, food, counseling and legal assistance. Last year’s event raised $5,000 for FSN and this year, generous prizes have been made so that a raffle can be held in an effort to double last year’s figure. So get involved, and do your bit to support the organizations that help those most in need. For more information about Domestic Violence Month call 468-3701 ext 2234/3415 and to get your tickets for Dancing with the BVI Stars! Call Jan on 4954349 or FSN on 494-7622. – Jan Critchley

Dealing with the office preacher
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, Please advise me on how to handle a co-worker who constantly preaches. There is no conversation that we are having that she doesn’t find a way to preach. I am a Christian also and some of our co-workers are, but a few are not. I know some churches encourage their members to witness, but she really has gone overboard. I don’t even want to make a little joke with her these days because she will find a way to make me feel sinful. Should I come out and just tell her? I don’t want to really be the bad one. –Shaking my head
down the talking when you are trying to work. Maybe you can tell her that you are already a Christian and have your own beliefs, so you would prefer if she didn’t feel the need to share hers with you as frequently as she does Have you thought about why this particular behavior affects you so much? Is it the person themselves who irritates you? Is it what she is saying? Does she have an attitude with it? It is important that you figure out why this is bothering you and if perhaps you can just adjust your personal views or expectations. Remember we can’t change others, but we can change how we react to what they do. Generally speaking though, I wish people in the workplace and anywhere for that matter, would on a whole have more positive things to say on a regular basis, rather than gossiping, spouting hurtful unconstructive criticism, tearing down, back-stabbing and generally just allowing negative things to come out of their mouth constantly. Life would be so much more pleasant and people would be motivated and inspired by each other more.
Dear Head-shaker, I have been around people who connect everything in a religious way and who sing gospel songs in the workplace all day long; some co-workers ignore them, some shake their head like you, some accuse them of being hypocrites because their words and actions don’t match and some join in. Someone might be going through some personal troubles and they need to talk about God or their spiritual experiences regularly, to keep them from falling apart. Others might indeed be using it as a witnessing tool, to save whoever they deem needs to be saved. If the co-worker is really distracting you from getting your job done then you can ask them to tone

Summer Hols with a Tribute to St. Ursula Isn’t summer in the Virgin Islands wonderful? It’s vacation time for all those in the tourist industry and a chance to get off the rock and broaden one’s horizons. There are several things that I definitely don’t want to do – go to the beach, go sailing, go snorkeling; I do those things every other week of the year. This year we (my wife Monique and I) decided to explore a little more of Puerto Rico. We had explored the old city of San Juan before but there is so much art, architecture, culture and history that we decided to do it again. We were not disappointed. Our 17th–century boutique hotel, the Gallery, is a museum in itself. Owned by an artist and sculptor, with works of art around every corner, our stay here was fascinating. From the orchid garden to the unique pool, the macaws, and period furnishing we were delighted – and the air conditioning worked! Nearby are the forts of San Cristobal and El Morro, full of factual exhibits and detailed explanations of battles, sieges, victories and defeats. Ponce de Leon, the island’s first governor had a house here and it is well preserved. Wonderful rococo art exhibits by Campeche and Oller are displayed in an old convent, soon to be the National Gallery. The El Convento Hotel is centrally located too and we had to try one of their Cuba Libres. The Cathedral of San Juan is just across the square and marked the beginning of the City of Old San Juan, year 1521. Old San Juan is typical of Spain’s old colonial cities. Surrounded by a heavily built defensive wall and with narrow streets, many cobble stoned, the atmosphere is definitely Elizabethan (probably not a Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
description the Spaniards would have used). Monuments and sculptures, wrought iron railings and ornate lamps all add to the feeling of history. One day we were surprised to see a monument to the BVI’s patron saint, Saint Ursula and the eleven thousand virgins. A plaque, translated from Spanish read: The Entreaty During the British siege of 1797 the women of the city, with the sanction of the Bishop, made an entreaty to the legend of Saint Ursula and the 11,000 Virgins for the liberation of the city of San Juan. The final British troop withdrawal was attributed to their appeal. The monument was erected in 1971, 450 years after the formal establishment of the city in 1521. Our next adventure was to drive across the island to Puerto Rico’s second city, Ponce… but that’s another story. 6

Homeland mesmerizing power over him and whether helping him makes Brody a terrorist or not. One of the central conceits to Homeland is the interior battle inside Brody. He turned but didn't act on the most important request asked of him by Nazir. Brody didn't blow up the vice president and a room full of top-level diplomats. It was the sound of his daughter's voice that brought him back from the ledge. But that doesn’t mean he dropped his allegiance to Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban), nor his newfound Muslim religion. And CIA agent Carrie (Danes) who has a bipolar disorder that makes her manic when off her meds was right but proved wrong, and the last thing we see on screen at the end of the episode is her biting down on a mouth guard as electroshock therapy kicked in. As season two begins, Carrie is being cared for by her father and sister, living life slowly and teaching English to foreigners. She's out of the CIA, of course, and apparently happy with that decision. But she's pulled back in (at least temporarily) when one of her valuable assets in the Middle East steps up with important information but will only tell it to Carrie. Now that he's a United States congressman, the question about Brody is how far he's willing to help Nazir. What he's fighting is the return of that person – that Marine who went to war – with the man who vowed revenge for the senseless killing of Nazir's son (who was under his tutelage). Nobody said loyalties were clear cut and uncomplicated.
The first two episodes of the Showtime series – which won several Emmys, including best drama series, at September's awards show – cement the show's reputation for action, smarts and intrigue. Homeland ran through so many plot lines in its first season the effect was both dizzying and impressive. The allure of the series was the constantly heightened tension and the disbelief when the writers deftly and dramatically got themselves out of the corner they painted into. Homeland won an Emmy for best drama, one for Claire Danes (Carrie Mathison) as best actress, another for Damian Lewis (Sgt. Nicholas Brody) as best actor and yet another for best writing. What the Emmy voters are saying so forcefully here, in case you missed it is this is the best show on television. Season two is just beginning. Having watched the first three episodes this much is clear: Homeland is as riveting and addictive as when we last saw it, kicking off with no break in the pulse-pounding action. At least in the first three episodes, whatever doubts there are about keeping the plates spinning is put to rest. The hours fly by, the plot of each is energetic, complex and addictive. Better yet, Danes and Lewis immediately put exclamation marks on their Emmy victories with a couple of outstanding performances. The best part about the first season of Homeland is that it ended in a gloriously oblique manner; the ishe-or-isn't-he question regarding Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody (Lewis) then became will-he-or-won'the in the finale. You see, Sgt. Nicholas Brody, was held captive for eight years by Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban) a leader of al-Qaeda who has an almost 13

Broadway’s Benanti knows the show must Go On Over a cup of tea in her chic Manhattan home, Laura Benanti of Go On chats about TV; her best friend and husband, Steven Pasquale; her considerable Broadway experience; and how ticked off she remains over the reaction to last year’s doomed The Playboy Club. A few feet from the building, in the shadow of One World Trade Center, a phone booth — yes, some still exist in Manhattan — is blanketed in an ad for Go On. The NBC Tuesday comedy, starring Matthew Perry, has Benanti as Lauren, leading group therapy sessions. That print campaign seems to be everywhere in Manhattan, and the actors’ photos have been retouched almost beyond recognition. Incidentally, Benanti does not need refinishing. Wearing jeans and a T-shirt, the green-eyed brunette is stunning, even without makeup and in the natural light of a bright morning. Despite two network shows and 10 Broadway plays to her credit, Benanti is rarely recognized. “I don’t know how Matthew Perry manages to be a human being in a world where everyone recognizes him,” she says. “It is a rare breed of fan that recognizes me. They will say, ‘Did we go to high school together? Maybe.’ And I keep walking. It makes me feel exposed and weird.” In New York, where real estate counts as small talk, Benanti acknowledges they were “really lucky” getting this apartment with an exposed brick wall in
an elegant building. They’re quite close to the rising WTC tower. “People are still scared to live by the World Trade Center,” she says. Three weeks a month, she’s working in Los Angeles, away from the constant construction. Like other New Yorkers in exile, she pines for her city. “This is my home,” she says. “I pulled my MetroCard out and started crying.” A New Jersey native, Benanti was trained at Millburn’s Paper Mill Playhouse, where she was the theater’s first Rising Star. “They are the reason I got on Broadway,” she says. Benanti launched her career as an understudy and has gone on to stealing shows. In 2008, she tore up the stage as Louise in Gypsy, and considering she had to hold her own against the formidable Patti LuPone, it’s even more amazing. It was a production that had theatergoers screaming “Brava!” and Benanti taking home a Tony. She is truly talented, an incredible singer and dancer who is equally at ease in comedy and drama. Yet Benanti is very quick to say, “A lot of people are talented. So much of why I have had any success is great fortune and people looking out for me.” She had a rough time with last year’s short-lived The Playboy Club. “I just feel like there are times people will want to jump on a show and kill it,” she says. In addition to the comedy, Benanti also has a recurring role as Maria, Detective Amaro’s wife, on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. “I like going between drama and comedy,” she says. 15
