This Week’s Feature Story
Freaky Fun for Halloween with this Saturday at the 24th annual Cedar International School Costume Party and Parade at Nanny Cay beach. The event will kick off at 3pm, however it is the infamous Costume Parade scheduled for 4pm that will serve as the events main attraction. According to organizer, Brigitte MacCallum, this year’s parade has a brand new category. She said, “We have added a new eco-friendly costume category to emphasize the environmental responsibilities that students are learning not just at Cedar, but across the entire territory.” Other categories include funniest, most creative, and scariest. In addition to the parade, there will be a number of fun booths and games for kids. “We are emphasizing fitness this year so in addition to the booths with crafts, arts, and games, we also have a free obstacle course, and a hockey and soccer shooting goal,” Ms. MacCallum said. Entry fee is $1 with an additional $1 registration fee for those taking part in the parade. All proceeds go directly to development of Cedar International School. For more information contact Brigitte MacCallu at maccallumbrigitte@gmail.com.

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Workaholic Husband
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, My husband is a workaholic and I am tired of him coming from work late 5 days a week and still going in some weekends and not taking me any place. It’s not like he is coming home to any stress. I am a young 44 year old woman, I keep myself attractive and our children are teenagers who are always on their computer or phone and the house is clean. Why does he not want to be here? –Frustrated wife
communication and compromise among other things. Instead of criticizing his behavior, start by letting him know that you enjoy spending time with him and wish you could do that more. Ask about his job so he can share with you what challenges he faces and together you can come up with some solutions – after all, two heads are better than one. While you both work on that together, it is important also that you have some things of your own going on, so he is not your only social relationship, even if he is the most important one. Do things you enjoy alone or with friends or family whose company you enjoy. Life is about finding balance and seeking to understand others the way we want to be understood. I applaud you for doing the best possible job that you can with your home and children and for being the kind of wife who notices when something is not right and tries to fix it.
Dear wife, I hear your frustration and I can only imagine what it must feel like waiting every evening for the man you love to come home to spend quality time with you. Your desires are reasonable and normal. In your mind, there is no reason why he would not want to come home to a clean house, attractive wife and well behaved children…but what is going on in his mind? Have you asked him why he works so much? What sort of deadlines does he have? Or are there end-ofday reports due daily? Is the work too much for him? Or is he even at work at all after 5:00pm? My suggestion is that you talk to him and work out an arrangement that is satisfying to you both. Maybe he is under pressure and more pressure from you will stress him and cause you to look selfish, although you might not be. For a marriage to work, there must be

The Art of Learning I’ve recently learned of an inspirational program organized by the Jost Van Dykes Preservation Society which has the island’s children utilizing art to learn about their environment. It is an innovative project that engages and stimulates young minds and brings out their creative talent. When my son was in third grade, I remember going into his classroom with some other mothers and working on a large underwater mural. The kids loved it – they were eager to learn, but perhaps a bit bored by the conventional rote learning of that time. Through this and other art projects, they learned about coral reefs and the intricate web of life of the marine world. It was a collage and we used real sand for the sea bottom, shells and other marine flotsam to complement the fish and coral reefs that they painted. By the end of the project, we had all learned a lot – young and old. The Jost Van Dyke project initially started with a different goal – to decorate Great Harbor’s newly renovated public restrooms. It was a classic example of art meeting a community need, but the end product was the same – to stimulate learning. The newly painted building, explains Jost Van Dykes Preservation Director Susan Zaluski, “looked great, but lacked something.” Various community members thought a mural would be the way to jazz up the building and since the JVDPS had already been leading kids on snorkeling trips, a marine-scape seemed a natural subject. Both local community members along with visitors to the island joined in to help donating time, money and supplies. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
The project, says Susan, embraced the Society’s interest in getting youth involved with the natural world. Isah Chinnery who is opening a gallery on White Bay assisted the kids with their art, and California-based schoolteacher, Alison Brett, donated a mockup of the mural and supplies. Sketched onto the wall by the adults and painted by the schoolchildren the end-result is outstanding. But the program didn’t stop with the completion of the mural, instead it morphed into art lessons that focus on native wildlife, and has taken on an unexpected direction as well. A couple from Connecticut has contributed to the project by printing tote bags at their stateside printing company. Made from recycled plastic bottles, the bags are printed with an image of the mural. Art, learning, and now enterprise – this little project on Jost Van Dyke has the potential for large results. Magic Mike Thirty-year-old Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) has big dreams, however his main claim to fame, to the delight of scores of women, is as “Magic Mike” – the lead male exotic dancer at the Xquisite Strip Club in Tampa, Florida. The club is owned by Dallas, (Matthew McConaughey) who is a self-serving, allindulging proprietor of the club who has designs on creating an empire which in his words, will "globally dominate" the world of male strippers. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Adam (Alex Pettyfer) moves to Tampa, Florida to live with his sister, Brooke (Cody Horn), after ruining his chances to play college football. He gets a job at a local construction company, where he meets Mike, who takes an instant liking to him. Mike takes Adam to the strip club and introduces him to Dallas. Before long, Adam becomes a dancer himself, known as “The Kid” and his innocence and unorthadox strip routine literally bring the women to their knees. Adam introduces Mike to his sister Brooke and a subtle, underlying attraction grows, despite the fact that Brooke is dating a man who lives in Orlando and Mike has an on-again off-again relationship. However, when Dallas announces his he has a plan to move their act to Miami, Mike confides in Brooke that he is tiring of the lifestyle and wants to pursue his dream of running a small business making custom furniture.
Adam falls into an excessive lifestyle as he becomes increasingly involved in drugs, and his behavior is increasingly reckless to the chagrin of Brooke who is relying on Mike to protect her sibling. When drug dealers break into Mike’s house looking for Adam, Mike has to hand over thousands of dollars – all of his life savings to pay Adam’s debt. He decides enough is enough, and after a final performance at Xquisite he quits. After realizing Magic Mike isn't coming back, Dallas invites Adam to replace Mike as the front man of the dancers. Brooke finds out that Mike paid off the drug dealers for her brother and that he is through with stripping and so she forgives him and their relationship begins in earnest. It’s kind of The Full Monty meets Striptease, but the characters lack depth, which makes it disappointing to watch. Strictly for die-hard McConaughey/Tatum fans only!

‘Face Off’ Finalists Face The Music In Live Season Finale If any competitive reality series merits a Halloween season finale, it’s Face Off. The Syfy program is all about horror makeup, so the traditional night for macabre disguises couldn’t be better timing for the show’s Season 3 winner to be declared. More is involved, since host McKenzie Westmore — who hails from a legendary family of Hollywood makeup artists — will preside over the finale live (in the Eastern half of the country; on tape delay elsewhere) for the first time Wednesday, Oct. 31. And in another first, viewers can decide who wins by voting after the previous night’s episode. Face Off has redefined the television image of Westmore, previously best-known as heroine Sheridan Crane Lopez-Fitzgerald on the now-defunct NBC daytime serial Passions. Unlike the first two Face Off seasons, she’s had a break between the weekly episodes and the finale, which she deems “really interesting. We’ll see how things have progressed for the people, and I’m so curious to see who America chooses.” Contestant challenges this season have involved Star Wars, pirates and characters inspired by unusual cars. “As with every show on television, you have to find new, inventive ways to keep hooking the viewer back in,” the friendly, energetic Westmore reasons, “ways to go bigger and broader. I think that’s what’s such a cool thing about what we’re doing; it’s a way
for us to involve the viewer more. Syfy and Mission Control (the studio behind Face Off) are so much about the fans. They’re truly listening to what they have to say and think.” Because of that, Westmore is convinced the selection of the Season 3 Face Off winner “will go beyond just a popularity contest. I see it on my Twitter feed all the time: The fans of Syfy really do have their own opinions on the artistic value of what they’re seeing in the makeup. It’s not just, ‘Oh, I really like that person.’ Granted, they’re not seeing in person all the stuff we’re seeing, but we’re essentially asking America whether it’s camera-ready.”
