This Week’s Feature Story

Your BVI Needs You! Tourist season is almost upon us, and to kick off the season in style, the BVI Tourist Board has planned an exciting roster of events for Tourism Month. These events will run through the whole month of November. Under the theme, “Your BVI Needs You,” the entire community and visitors to the BVI will have lots of opportunities to experience our island life with many events from fine dining and sailing to environmental and cultural activities. Malcia Smith Hamilton, Acting Director of the Tourist Board said, “We have designed a Tourism Month to entice foodies, lure adventurers, challenge photographers, empower youth, push green initiatives and stimulate an overall interest in our vast tourism product.” She continued, “The festivities planned for Tourism Month offer something unique for each age group and interest. We are encouraging everyone to get involved and celebrate tourism with us during the month of November as, ‘Your BVI Needs You’.” One of the key events planned during the month is BVI Restaurant Week which will run from the 16th to

24th of November where participating restaurants will offer unique dishes at a fraction of the normal cost to showcase their particular specialties. Plus, for $20$40, you can get an appetizer, main course, dessert and a complementary drink – so what better time to give that new restaurant a try and experience something different. To get Restaurant Week started in style – there will be an opening event at the Noel Lloyd Park on November 9th from 11am until 2pm where you can try free samples of the participating restaurants best dishes! Other activities include a Film Workshop, the BVI Boat Show, a Photo Competition, Interagency Regatta and the Round Tortola Race, Green Tourism Workshops, Tourist Board Open Houses in Tortola and Virgin Gorda, Tourism Family Feud and the Grand Finale and Awards on the last day of the month. See the full page ad in this issue of the Limin’ Times for further details. Do your bit for Tourism Month by getting involved in these fun activities that are designed to bring the whole community together. Rags to Riches I buy myself a sandwich for $7.95. The layover is over two hours. I eat half of a half of my sandwich before boarding, saving the rest for the long day and night ahead of me. I accepted every free beverage offered while in fight. I still have a half of sandwich left and $2 and some change and have travelled thousands of miles. As I navigate my way towards the gate I spy a sign for an ATM machine. Low and behold it’s a First Bank ATM. CHA-Ch’ing, got cash. I proceed to the snack bar for a cold Presidente to accompany my remaining half of sandwich. Next stop Puerto Rico and a three-hour layover. I allow myself bottled water only, getting into survival mode. And good thing too, because the flight was delayed. We boarded – we deplaned – we re-boarded and finally took off reaching Beef Island at approximately 11:15pm. Over the last 20 hours I’ve had water, a Presidente beer and a sandwich. My guy had been at the airport since 9:45pm that evening and though asleep on a bench outside, he roused himself like a champ and presented me with a picnic dinner he’d made of country ribs, potato salad and Champagne. Yes, I felt like a million bucks.

I recently returned from the states after a month long holiday. Celebrated many birthdays, including mom’s 85th and had a visit with my son and daughterin-law who will have their first child this coming February. I had a blast and felt like a million bucks (yeah, remember that million). I was driven to the airport by my nephew Evan, a recent graduate of American University, in Washington DC who is job hunting and broke. I offered him $20 for the short ride at 4am. Upon our arrival at Bradley International in Connecticut, I handed him $30 and words of encouragement (get a job!). From there it was on to the AA counter where I was informed my luggage (one bag) was overweight to the tune of $60. With no other bag or someone there to give the overflow to, I paid the $60. Well, I only had $100 cash on me. No credit card, just my First Bank ATM card. Of my $100, I’d given Evan $30, AA got $60 now I have $10. I proceed to the ATM machine on the way to security. To my horror, the machine declined to recognize my card. OK, so I have $10 to fly to Miami and I don’t have breakfast. My first flight took off at 6:10am and I was due to arrive at Beef Island at 10pm. When we deplane in Miami I rush to the ATM machine to discover that my card is still nongratis. Do you know how expensive airports are?

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Should I Consider Self-Employment

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, I lost my job about three years now and my searches have turned up nothing. I had two interviews and one person told me I am overqualified for the position and the other one offered a lot less money than I wanted, but now I wish I had taken it as it would have been better than nothing. I have worked as a manager of retail establishments and I am now considering if I should become self employed. What kind of skills do you think would make a person do well being self-employed? – Job-seeker Dear Job Seeker, I like the direction you are taking by considering all of your options. Not everyone has an entrepreneurial spirit, but sometimes when a person is forced to do something, they discover strengths they never even knew they had. An entrepreneur’s job is not easy; especially when starting out. You might have to put in more than the usual eight hours daily to build your business. If you work from home, there are distractions of children, television, your bed, etc. and you have to carve out time where you focus solely on work. The benefits however, would include less overhead as you don’t have to pay for an office and extra utilities and you might already have a computer there. Some of the skills that are necessary for selfemployment are passion, persistence, good timemanagement skills, the ability to multi-task, being brave enough to approach prospects and good financial management. You will work better if your job is your passion. You are an expert in retail management, so you could Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

consider doing retail yourself or being a consultant. Some of the places where you applied might not be able to hire you, because that means paying you a salary, paying medical benefits and social security and providing office equipment. If you work as a consultant, they only have to pay you a salary and you are responsible for your own benefits, equipment, etc. It’s a win-win situation as you are not tied down to an 8 to 5 position, so you have some freedom and flexibility and money coming in. Itemize your strengths and shortcomings so you know what you are working with. Also, conduct a mini survey with former colleagues and potential clients to be clear on what is needed in your field. Being self employed takes commitment as many businesses fail in the first year, but it can be a good way to earn income. Boys Will Be Boys When They Play In The Wedding Band Maybe you don’t think of them while you’re out there boogeying to I Will Survive or doing the chicken dance, but those guys in the wedding band are people, too. Sometimes they’re very funny people, in fact, with entertaining lives, as is the case with the new TBS comedy Wedding Band, premiering Saturday, Nov. 10. It’s about four friends who spend their weekends as wannabe rock gods in their cleverly named group, Mother of the Bride. Brian Austin Green Beverly Hills, 90210 plays Tommy, the hunky lead singer who still lives for good times and pretty girls. Then there are Eddie (Peter Cambor), the sometimes responsible husband, father and businessman; Stevie (Harold Perrineau), the studio musician looking for something different; and Barry (Derek Miller), the loose cannon drummer whose energy level puts Jack Black to shame. Green, who is already a father and is soon expecting a baby with wife Megan Fox, says part of the joy in playing Tommy is getting to safely revisit (or “regress,” as he puts it) his own reckless youth. “It’s fun, it’s definitely different,” he says. “I get to the end of an episode and think, ‘Thank God I’m not this guy anymore because it’s so draining.’ I don’t drink anymore, I don’t go out to places anymore, I live a pretty easygoing life. I just don’t think my brain and my body could take it if I did anything other than this. I don’t know how people at 35, 40 still party as hard as Tommy does. It’s impressive, for sure.” The hard-partying lifestyle is key to how Green, 39, plays Tommy, but he says it’s not the entire character. Underneath all the hedonism, there is a core

selflessness to him. “He’s perpetually hung over, he’s out of his mind, but he’s a good guy,” Green says. “That’s the endearing thing. He’s a drunk, and he’s a partier, but at the end of the day he works his a... off to do his job to the best of his ability and really make special days for people, and he’d kill himself trying.” The pacing may seem odd to viewers used to their TV comedies coming in half-hour bites. But with its multiple main characters and sometimes intricate plots, Wedding Band makes full use of its one-hour run time, creating a vibe Green says is more akin to “fun short movies than long episodes of television.” Sometimes it involves talking Tommy’s old flame out of dumping her current beau, or maybe turning a couple of high-school nerds into studs by helping them throw the most legendary (but nonalcoholic) rager in memory. Aside from him and his co-stars getting to play the instruments themselves, one of the highlights for Green so far has been getting to work with his wife something they had previously agreed not to do. But when a last-minute conflict left a large guest role open, Fox stepped in. 15
