This Week’s Feature Story by Jane Bakewell

The Habit of Art – Treading the Boards For theatre lovers across the BVI, this is definitely one not to be missed. The UK’s National Theatre Live’s broadcast of Alan Bennett’s acclaimed play, The Habit of Art, will be aired at 7pm on Saturday, 11th January at the HLSCC Auditorium. The Habit of Art is part of the National Theatre’s 50th Anniversary groundbreaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre from the famous London stage to locations across the globe and to date, these broadcasts have been experienced by over 1.5 million people in more than 500 venues around the world. Starring Richard Griffiths, Alex Jennings and Frances de la Tour, The Habit of Art is extremely funny and risqué in places. The production is considered a “multi-layered masterpiece” centered on a fictional meeting between W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten while Britten is composing the opera, Death in Venice. The play is as much about the theatre itself as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two very different men and on growing old, creativity and inspiration. Nadia Menezes, Counsel at Appleby, instigated the BVI project

after seeing a number of performances screened at an arts center in New York. She said, “I was determined to have the plays available to enjoy in the BVI, however none of this could have happened without the support of HLSCC.” She added, “We are now planning some new performances aimed at younger/child audiences this year.” Thanks to a collaborative effort by Appleby and HLSCC, selected performances have been already aired here in the BVI, classics such as Frankenstein and Macbeth, and the final play of this current theatre series is Hamlet, which will air on 25th January 2014. Michael Burns, Managing Partner at Appleby said, “We are excited about bringing these stellar performances to the BVI – the response from the community so far has been very enthusiastic.” This deeply moving play is one not to be missed and proceeds from ticket sales will go back to HLSCC to assist with other initiatives, so get your tickets today from the usual outlets or on the door 15 minutes prior to performances. Prices are $15 for advance purchase, $20 on the door and $10 for students & HLSCC staff. More information can be found at the Facebook page “NTLBVI.”

Small Islands, Big Achievements The BVI is a small island nation with an out-sized sporting talent, and I am always impressed when I read Dean Greenaway’s sports column in the Limin Times which often describes the athletic achievements of the Territory’s young people. Among the many notable athletes who attended school in the BVI are Taheshia Harrigan, the lightening-like BVI sprinter who has participated in the Summer Olympics twice. Keita Cline and Willis Todman are also both two-time Olympians. Dean Greenaway himself was an Olympic sprinter who represented the BVI at the Los Angeles Games in 1984 – the first Olympics that the BVI attended. Up and coming athletes include Nelda Huggins, Tarika “Tinkerbell” Moses, Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner and Kyron McMaster, who are all contenders for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. Two other young BVI Islanders, Alec Anderson and Chris Brockbank have their sights on the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics in sailing, and are currently going though the necessary qualifying trials. Athletes here come in all stripes. Adam Crook, who was born in the BVI and attended the Cedar School before relocating to Wisconsin, is now representing the BVI in the Winter Olympics at Sochi, Russia on February 18th. His event is the Skiing Half Pipe – a sport that brings to mind the 1993 movie Cool Runnings about the Jamaican Bobsled team. A tropical island promoting a team for a decidedly winter sport like the bobsled – or in Adam’s case, the Skiing Half Pipe – has a certain cachet. Adam is actually the second BV Islander to repreLimin’ Times Entertainment Guide

sent the Territory at the Winter Olympics. The first is Earl Fraser who represented the BVI in speed skating in 1984 in Sarajevo. The trailblazing Fraser was also considered to be the Olympics first black speed skater. Adam first fell in love with the sport when on skiing excursions with his family. A daredevil at heart, he wasn’t content with just downhill skiing, but decided to specialize in the Half Pipe, an event where he flips upside down as he flies through the air – for an onlooker like me, this is a heart-stopping event. To earn his place in the Olympics, Adam had to qualify in several international events placing 10th in the Half Pipe World Cup in New Zealand and 14th against a select group of Half Pipe skiers in the World Championships last winter in Oslo, Norway. Adam says, that he is pleased to represent the BVI in a winter sport. “It’s amazing representing my home country on international level.” Like our other BVI athletes, Adam is putting our small islands on a large map. 4

7 Things to give up in 2014 Ask Koren It’s a new year and many of us are looking for-

them alone but do not allow them to poison your life with their harmful words and behaviour. 5. Emotional baggage – banish the guilt, shame and hurt that you are holding on to. You holding malice against someone is a much heavier burden than forgiveness. You cannot go back and undo things you have done in the past, but you can make amends. Do not be a prisoner to emotional weights that inhibit you from living the life you deserve. 6. Bad attitude – it is unreasonable to expect people to constantly tiptoe around you because of your explosive anger, your insecurity or your persistent pessimism. Get a grip and sort yourself out. Talk to a counselor, read a self-help book, go to church or find some other way to work on your issues. There is some good in you – show it once in a while. 7. Uncomfortable shoes – when you wear uncomfortable shoes, you are miserable, you feel ugly, you walk with a limp and you get tired more easily. Stop wearing them. Invest in comfortable shoes that are your size and see how much better you feel. Sometimes, it’s the simple things in life that makes all the difference.

ward with great expectation to 2014. For this journey, the less weight we are carrying, the better, so let’s look at seven things to give up for 2014 that can make a huge positive difference in our lives. 1. Self doubt – give up that bad habit that causes you to sabotage yourself. While you must look at yourself with critical eyes sometimes to improve, stop putting yourself down, calling yourself names and belittling your abilities. Treat yourself the way you want others to treat you. Be good to yourself and celebrate your capacity to be awesome. 2. Narrow minds – discard that mindset that causes you to only see things from your point of view. Stop thinking that everyone who does not look like you or behave like you or think like you is faulty or wrong. Be more open-minded and accepting of differences. Bigotry is no longer in style – tolerance is. 3. Dishonesty – suppress the tendency to lie, deceive and cheat. In the end, they cause pain, misery and unhappiness and destroy relationships. Not only do you lose people, but you lose your integrity. Practice instead to tell the truth and be brave enough to live with the consequences. 4. Toxic people – minimize your contact with people who bring out the worst in you; people who treat you badly, abuse you and are constantly negative and unsupportive. If you cannot help them, leave

Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks) and his crew are carrying freight around the Horn of Africa when four Somali pirates forcefully take over their ship, the MV Maersk Alabama. As the raggedy Somali gang approaches the Maersk Alabama in their motorboats, shiny with sweat and reeking of unpredictability, it soon

Wise Beyond His Years: Freeskier Looks Ahead to X Games, Sochi These are heady times for the sport of halfpipe skiing, what with its popularity being at an all-time high and its Olympic debut coming next month at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. At the forefront of the sport’s charge to mainstream recognition is David Wise, the 23-year-old native of Reno, Nev., and owner of two X Games gold medals in the superpipe, who will be among the 200plus athletes on hand when the 2014 Winter X Games take place in Aspen/Snowmass, Colo., Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 23-26, on ESPN and ABC. “I’m honestly really proud to have been part of the wave of getting this sport into the Olympics,” Wise says. “I’ve been competing in the halfpipe for a long time, and we honestly thought we were going to get into the 2010 Olympics, and then that didn’t happen. But basically the high points of my career have been the times when we were looked at (to be possibly) put into the Olympics or not. So I’m proud of this sport getting into the Olympics and being able to be a part of the first wave. “We’re going from a sport that only people who ski watch,” Wise continues, “to something that worldwide people care about, whether they ski or not, which in my opinion is really cool; it’s exciting for our sport. We are basically the representation of what the sport is going to look like to the world. You know, I’ve

Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

been skiing my whole life, I’ve been a part of the industry for a really long time, and I’ve always cared about skiing and where it’s going, so it’s definitely exciting to be able to be there to represent the sport the way I think it should be represented.” But before he heads off to Europe to be the global ambassador of half/superpipe, there is the business at hand in Aspen, where he comes in as the twotime defending champion. Though he’s considered a favorite to defend his gold medal, he knows to take nothing for granted. “The exciting thing about our sport,” Wise says, “is that there’s a lot of guys who could win on any given day.”

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
