Bullseye Don’t miss out on the latest craze to hit the island, that best loved pastime –darts. As in many parts of the world, the sport had all but disappeared from our favorite watering holes, despite being hugely popular around a decade ago when this simple and exciting game had ruled the Territory from Virgin Gorda to Frenchman’s Cay. However, no fear, as “Darts Fever” has once again struck the VI, thanks to the BVI Darts Association (BVIDA) and “The Buccaneer’s Hideway Tournament,” spearheaded by Elwin Lee aka DJ Dolphin. There are fresh new teams and favorable venues and an active schedule that will take the players through till the end of the season in December and into the next. The next match to take place is this Saturday at the “Fish ‘N Lime” on Saturday, 21st September at 7pm. So get your team of four players together and get there a little early to register for only $20. There will be free shots throughout the night for every bullseye strike and score over 90, and $2 specials on Bud Light and Red Stripe. Curry specials will also be on
offer by Simon of Curry House fame, entertainment will be provided by DJ Dolphin and there are great team prizes for the winners. The popularity of this best loved pastime is partly down to the fact that it is so simple to arrange, a set of darts, a dartboard and eight feet of shooting space. That’s it! Also, the sport draws everyone in from novices to wellexperienced players and for nights of exciting fun and cheerful competition. However, another aim of this tournament is to get the BVI back on the regional, if not, the international map and have a delegation – a BVI National Darts Team that can compete in world class tournaments. In the past the BVIDA has sent teams to the Caribbean Cup Tournament and the Americas Cup Tournament and in fact, the next (20th) Caribbean Cup Tournament and the 7th Americas Cup is scheduled to be held in Tampa, Florida next July and strangely, their poster still has the BVI member country flag printed on it (despite being a no show for nine years) – could it be a sign?

Ask Koren Hard Times, Tough Decisions
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, There are some young ladies who do not seem to want to work, but they depend on men to take care of them. I have been approached several times and offered relationships in exchange for a monthly allowance. It would be nice if someone could get the word out to them that it is not the best way to live and they should try to develop some sort of independence. Thank you. –Gentleman
Job hunting requires persistence and effort. There is a lot of competition out there so one must dedicate time daily to the pursuit of a job and check in with all suitable contacts to put the word out there that he or she is looking. If the person has some skills, they could consider being self-employed until something else comes up. Of course, for those persons who just do not want to work, but want the easy way out, it’s not so simple to change their mindset. They have to come to the realization that their methods might work temporarily but hardly anybody wants the obligation of being fully financially responsible for another human being unless it’s their child – not even spouses want to do that these days. Depending on a gracious benefactor is not a long-term solution unless the person can afford it and is willing. One must develop a sense of self-actualization where at any time necessary, they can take care of themselves and they can make a contribution to society.
Dear Gentleman, With the economic crisis that we are facing worldwide combined with the fact that morality is declining, I am not surprised that young ladies are offering themselves for financial gain. It is very sad and not an ideal situation, especially when one considers the desperation they must be feeling, the abuse some will have to endure and the diseases people could be exposed to if they have sexual relationships with multiple partners. We also must be aware, that women are not the only victims; some men who are economically disadvantaged also consider these options. Even while we know there are definite disadvantages to this behavior, now is not the time to be judgmental, now is the time to be helpful and how can we help? What are the alternatives?

Cold Comfort Farm I have a soft spot for British comedies with eccentric characters, and Cold Comfort Farm, a BBC production, fits the bill perfectly. Based on the classic 1932 novel by Stella Gibbons, the movie beautifully captures an era where the modern and the traditional are often on a collision course. Flora Poste, (Kate Beckinsale), is a young society woman used to a life of luxury, elegant parties and sophisticated company, who suddenly finds herself orphaned and virtually penniless. With no place to live, she sends out letters to far-flung relatives hoping for an invitation to stay. Her sole response is from her cousin Judith who invites her to live at her farm, an environment as foreign to Flora as the moon. “How bad can it be?” thinks Flora, who sets off to Cold Comfort Farm in her stylish city clothes and armed with boundless optimism. She soon finds out. Dilapidated and depressing, the farm is inhabited by a quirky gallery of relatives headed by the matriarch Ada Doom (Sheila Burrell), who rarely leaves her room, and when she does, it’s to strike dread in her brood by announcing that as a girl, she “saw something nasty in the wood shed.” Ada’s daughter Judith (Eileen Atkins) can’t see beyond the constraints of the farm, and neither can her sons Seth (Rufus Sewell), a sexy hunk with a retinue of female admirers, and his more serious brother Reuben (Ivan Kaye), who despairs of ever having a wife or a girlfriend. Other household members include Amos (Ian McKellen) an amateur hell-fire preacher and Mrs. Beetle the housekeeper. The only one
dreaming of a better life is the boys’ sister, Elfine (Maria Miles), a wood sprite who spends her time communing with nature and dreaming of the unobtainable boy next door, a young country squire. Rather than be daunted by her wretched environment or the disparate and desperate characters that are her relatives, Flora sets out to do what she does best, make things right. It is not an easy task. Set in their ways, they resist improvements to their lives, because “this is the way life has always been.” Never one to give up, Flora finds neat and ingenious ways to solve her wayward relatives’ problems and ultimately provide them with their unfulfilled dreams. Cold Comfort Farm is a charming movie with many laugh-out-loud moments and is imbued with as much optimism as its plucky young heroine. Released in 1993, Cold Comfort Farm is available on Netflix and on DVD at Amazon. 11

The Champion of Champions The BVI Basketball Federation – the governing body of the sport in the territory – ended its season last month. This weekend, are the final games of the year on Friday and Saturday’s Champion of Champions tournament featuring the league champions from St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. Kitts, coming up against the BVI’s champs. Who will be the Champion of Champions? The answer will come on Saturday night. “Competition begins at 8 p.m. on Friday night with St. Kitts’ Fruita Falcons against St. Thomas’ Legacy and St. Croix’s Real Kings vs the BVI’s Legs,” explained federation president Bryon “Chucky” Hodge. “On Saturday, also at 8 p.m. the Friday night losers will play for third place and the winners for the championship.” All games are scheduled for the Multipurpose Sports Complex. Hodge said the tournament is being used as a funds raiser. “We’re trying to raise some funds for women’s basketball,” Hodge noted. “Currently, we have some women interested in basketball and they are in training with Ronnie “Gola” Simmonds and Morris Wattley, so we are trying to get some help for them to start a women’s program.” The weekend event is the final activity of the BVI Basketball Federation before elections are held in November. College Classic Series on Tortola The HLSCC Highland Spring College Classic Series which began in 1996, will kick off its 18th season on Saturday the 21st on Tortola where it all began following the 2013 series opener in Virgin Gorda last weekend.
Legs will be trying to keep the Champion of Champions title at home
Registration for the 7 a.m. race at the College in Paraquita Bay, begins at 6:30 a.m. “On the heels off all the Caribbean Wellness Day activities that happened over the weekend including the race on Virgin Gorda, I’m hopeful that persons won’t just stop moving all of a sudden, but that the weekend would have been a motivation to find other activities,” said race director Stephanie Russ Penn. “Certainly, the College race at Pariquita Bay would be a great option. I know I’m going to see all the usual persons that have been coming over the years and I I’m looking forward to seeing all of them. I’m also looking forward to all the new faces who will pop up to see what these races are all about. So, I’m expecting it to be a first great race.” Khiry Creque has won the men’s overall division for the last two years while Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses and Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, were the co-women champions. Moses ended the last race of 2012 season with a time of 13 minutes and 10 seconds—the second fastest time ever recorded by a female. 13

Tourist For a Day Having lived on Tortola for nearly two decades, I have had many wonderful opportunities to take visiting friends around to explore “Nature’s Little Secrets.” When you know the islands well, it is great fun to take the uninitiated to your favorite off-the beaten-path spots – many of which may not be on a local guide’s list. I’ve often wondered what those on an official guided tour of Tortola see in a day. Recently, I got my opportunity for this adventure when I joined a day tour of Tortola, which was specifically promoted as an “historical tour.” As a writer about the history and culture of these islands, I was excited to see what others experienced first hand. As we boarded our tour in the East End of the island our first stop was the Old Josiah’s Bay Plantation, which I was familiar with because I live near by and walk past the grounds when exercising my dog. Originally a sugar cane plantation and later a rum distillery, local owner Freddie Freeman has done his best to restore what nature has overgrown for decades. The old walls to the boiler house can be seen and some of the rum distillery equipment nestled on a wall, but the art gallery and restaurant housed in historical buildings were closed. I would deem it a work in progress with great potential – but not quite there yet. That seemed to be my pervasive feeling about many of the historical sites we viewed. Mt Healthy National Park and windmill were nicely preserved, but the actual ruins were cordoned off and the Thornton Plantation was barely visible under the vegetation growth. The ruins of St Phillip’s Anglican
Church got a passing nod, but it too needs a lot of work. The Callwood Distillery was the exception because it is a working distillery with staff on hand. Our driver, a local BVIslander, was well versed in the island’s native trees, plants and herbs. He often stopped to point out local fruit trees like sour sop and sugar appler. I loved the game he showed us played by youth here with the stems of the Flamboyant flower. Each small stem has a flower bud curved at the top. The game is to hook your opponent’s flower bud with yours and whoever’s bud decapitates first loses. This insight into local lore was my highlight. I only hope that historical tourism becomes a priority in the territory and more is done to preserve the past – an important story that deserves to be remembered.
