Theatre Series Set to Thrill The stage is set for four more screenings of a diverse range of theatrical productions as part of the new spring line-up of Appleby’s BVI Theatre Series. The first play to be screened is Private Lives, which will be shown at the HLSCC Auditorium at 7:00pm on Saturday, February 15th. Thanks to a collaborative effort by Appleby and HLSCC, since October 2013, the first series of selected performances have already been aired here in the BVI. From Shakespearean classics such as Macbeth and Hamlet to Alan Bennet’s, Habit of Art, these plays have been broadcast as part of London’s National Theatre’s project to show the best of British Theatre to locations across the world. With the new spring line-up though, organizers have looked at broadening the content to have more general appeal with productions such as The Audience, starring Helen Mirren in her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II and War Horse, the international smash hit which is expected to be so popular that two show dates have been set. First off though is Noël Coward’s Private Lives, an explosive tale of two glamorous and passionate people who are divorced but find themselves five years later in adjoining

hotel rooms with their spouses. This chance encounter reignites their passion as they fling themselves into a whirlwind romance without a thought of partners present or turbulances past. Nadia Menezes, Counsel at Appleby, instigated the theatre series after seeing a number of performances screened at an arts center in New York. She said, “I was determined to have the plays available to enjoy in the BVI, however none of this could have happened without the support of Appleby and HLSCC. ” She added, “It has also been good that teachers are encouraging students to attend and for Hamlet we produced act by act summaries aimed at helping the students understand the performance. Entertainment through education, that is the goal.” So make a fun theatre outing part of your Valentine’s weekend, Brandywine Restaurant will be open from 5pm and stay open later on the night of the performance, perfect for before show drinks or dinner and drinks afterwards. So make this a date to remember and get your tickets today. Prices are $15 for advance purchase, $20 on the door and $10 for students and HLSCC staff. More information can be found at the Facebook page “Appleby’s BVI Theatre Series.”

In Our Words As a writer I was impressed with the new writing exhibit “In our Words. An Exhibition of Virgin Islands’ Writings” that is on display at the 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works for the month of February. I am a great lover of the written word and will read a book for not just for the storyline, but for the beauty of its writing. This comprehensive exhibit shows just how many people in the BVI appreciate the written word. On display are books of poetry, history, academic texts, memoirs by such notable Virgin Islanders as HR Penn and J.R. O’Neal, a book on women farmers, guidebooks, newspapers and much, much more – all written by people who call (or who have called) the BVI home. At the exhibit’s opening, in addition to the speeches and notes of congratulations, there were also several book readings. It seemed to me a new chapter of appreciation for literature in the islands had been launched. When asked if The BVI Welcome Guide would participate, I was thrilled. The Welcome has been promoting the Virgin Islands through its articles on the islands’ history, people, geography and activities for 43 years. The very first Welcome published in 1971 featured a message from Chief Minister Lavity Stoutt on its front page, along with his photo. “It is indeed a great honor for me to convey to you a message for publication in The Welcome,” he wrote. It was two firsts in a row – the BVI’s first Chief Minister, commenting on the BVI’s first tourism magazine. Since then The Welcome has featured hundreds of stories written by dozens of talented writers that have celebrated everything BVI from its flora and fauna to cultural celebrations and coral reefs. Its informative guide materials have helped countless Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

visitors map out their stays. We have even become multi generational – the children of our earliest readers are now planning their own BVI vacations with our help. Residents are among our many avid readers and comments on our Facebook page show just how much they enjoy reading it. Often we get calls from students at the high school or college asking if they can look through back issues for a research project and our staff is always happy to oblige. We give boxes of magazines to the schools for use in projects and the VI National Archives keeps a copy of each magazine as well – further ensuring that so much valuable information on the British Virgin Islands is available to those who need it. The exhibition “In Our Words” will continue through the month of February. As you examine the many books and publications on display, you will appreciate just what a large place words have in our small islands. It is a tribute to all those who have captured a slice of VI life through books and other written media. 4

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

He Is Changing My Daughter Ask Koren Dear Koren, My daughter is dating a man with five children and four different baby mothers. He has caused her to stop perming her hair and grow locks and now she even talks like him. How far will a young woman go to please a man and as her mother, don’t I still have some responsibility to guide her? We are still close but she does not ask my opinion as much as she used to. –Concerned Mom

makes him a criminal or a bad person. Observe her for a while and see how she behaves when she is around him and when he is not there. Does she seem jumpy with him, afraid, nervous or unable to be herself? Or does she seem happy and content? Do you get the impression that he has forced her to stop perming her hair and grow locks? If you have evidence that she is being taken advantage of or being abused, then you definitely need to confront her and him or report it as a domestic abuse. If she is following his lead of her own accord, then just let her be. Maybe she loves him and wants to please him or maybe she is just comfortable with her new lifestyle. People are unique and we all deserve the chance to be who we want to be. Just because someone else does not understand their lifestyle or agree with it, that does not mean that something is wrong with them. Have an open mind and ask your daughter how she really feels. Her happiness should be the priority.

Dear Concerned Mom, Once your daughter has reached the age of 18, she is an adult and she can make her own choices. Also, at that age, you no longer have any obligation to guide her, but you can choose to; since you have a close relationship that makes things a lot easier. It’s okay to share your concerns with her, if they are legitimate, but be careful that you do not lose her with your attitude or complaints. Ask yourself, “What has this guy done that is so bad?” What is it that I don’t like about him? Does he remind me of someone? Am I jealous that he has more of my daughter’s attention than I do? Am I afraid I will lose her to him? In other words, try to figure out if you are concerned about her or if you just have a dislike towards him. Him having five children with four mothers might not be a wise choice, but it in no way

Ride Along Ben Barber (comedian Kevin Hart) spends his days as a high school security guard and nights with his girlfriend, Angela (Tika Sumpter), and his video games in which he has attained platinum status – very important detail throughout the movie. In the virtual world of his game, Ben’s character is called the "Black Hammer" and is a tall, broad-shouldered soldier. Ben wants to marry Angela, but her overprotective police detective brother, James (Ice Cube), can’t see proficiency in gaming warfare as a viable testament of worthiness for his sister’s hand. When he hears that Ben has been accepted to the police-training academy, James proposes that Ben tag along during a day on the job. Given that Ben is an aspiring cop, he jumps at the chance. For the next hour, the duo roll through the motions that have previously been done in every buddy/cop movie since 48 Hours and includes references to Training Day and Ice Cube’s past music and films. While on the ride along Ben is allowed to take some routine police calls which are all designed to get Ben frustrated, however it is James who comes across as a bully for putting his potential brother-inlaw in harm’s way for the sake of a few pranks. This particular ride along occurs at the tail end of a three-year investigation in which James has been tracking an underworld Atlanta kingpin named Omar (Laurence Fishburne) who is known for arms and drug trafficking. Omar is a "ghost" in the criminal underworld. No one, not even his own men, know

Cast & Credits Ice Cube------------------------------James Payton Kevin Hart------------------------------Ben Barber Tika Sumpter-------------------------Angela Payton Laurence Fishburne---------------------------Omar what he looks like because he supposedly kills any friend or foe that sees his face. James takes advantage of every opportunity he has to make Ben miserable and convince him that he’s not cut out to wield a badge, while secretly investigating further into a dangerous case. Mean while Ben tries to impress his girlfriend’s over protective brother and prove that he has what it takes to uphold the law. You’ll have to watch the movie to see how Ben does, but I can tell you it leads to a wild night and Ben’s big mouth proves to be as dangerous as a bullet. 11

Schools Rugby Impresses NACRA Official NACRA Rugby Regional Development Officer Katie Sjeklocha walked away from Friday’s Primary Schools Rugby Tournament impressed with the participants. “I think it’s amazing. I’m going to take it home and do something similar because in the States, we don’t do a Round Robin style tournament like this one,” said Sjeklocha who is from Minnesota and has visited several countries in the region. “I think it’s pretty awesome, 120 kids is awesome. Solo (Coach Sherlock Solomon) has done a ton of work and he’s doing an excellent job.” After being upset by Francis Lettsome last year, Cedar A returned to the top of the pile when they beat Cedar B to claim the 2014 Tag Rugby title with a 3-0 victory, behind the scoring of Liam Blok and Stefano Tasking. Block scored twice and Tasking once for the victory. Cedar A advanced to the finals after trimming Isabella Morris Primary School, 3-2. Cedar B overpowered a feisty Ivan Dawson Primary School, 4-2, setting up the final parings. Sjeklocha said the tournament format is excellent because it gets the school and teachers involved. She said it’s a huge part of the sport’s development because it encourages the PE teachers and school to get involved in the program and the curriculum. “Running this style of tournament is so much easier on parents and teachers because it’s during the day, transportation is arranged for the most part and this makes it easy and accessible as possible to play rugby and take those barriers away,” she explained. “I think other areas in the Caribbean that are just getting started with rugby, using this format, then getting

rugby in the schools and running a tournament at the end of the unit is perfect.” What did she see from some of the young players in terms of skill and agility? “There are some unbelievably fast, fast boys and girls, who are phenomenal athletes,” she pointed out. “I’m impressed by the level at which they play because they have only been playing rugby in schools for a very short time and the amount of skills they already have is pretty impressive.” The High Schools Rugby Tournament is scheduled for noon on Friday at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. The tournament features Cedar, Elmore Stoutt High School, St. Georges High School and Seventh Day Adventist. The tournament targets U15 and U17 co-ed teams. “Elmore Stoutt upset Cedar last time in the U15 and again it looks like there’ll be a battle with Seventh Day coming up, but, Cedar has been dominating the U15,” noted Coach Solomon. “I think Elmore Stoutt will be giving them a challenge as well. It’s very hard to predict who will come out on top in both the U15 and U17 divisions.” 13
