War Horse Appleby the proud sponsor of the ongoing Theatre Series, which has been a collaborative effort with the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, is showing War Horse, the next in this series of performances. Nadia Menezes, Counsel at law firm Appleby, was determined to have the performances available to enjoy in the BVI after having seen a number of performances screened at the Arts Centre in New York. Having spent the last year working on this project she admits it couldn’t have been done without the support of Appleby and the HLSCC. This project makes internationally renowned theatre performances accessible to locations around the world. The broadcasts have been experiences by over 1.5 million people in several venues around the world. At HLSCC the group has already screened a few production including Hamlet, Habit of Art, Macbeth and the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of Frankenstein. War Horse, next in the series is based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo and is a powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and magnificent artistry. The South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company brings breath-

Ask Koren Widowed and Wondering Ask Koren Dear Koren,
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
I lost my wife over a year ago but the reality is we had lost each other for more than ten years as we grew apart. We’re old school so we maintained a respectful relationship and none of us went out of the marriage. Anyway, I want to start dating again, but my two daughters are still acting like I am a grieving baby. I don’t want to be callous, but I was ready to start dating about three months after she died but I decided to wait a year to quell the eager tongues. Now what do I say to my daughters and the close friends of my former wife and I? –Eager Man
you are ready to be back on the market. Enlist their help to choose some nice clothes from your closet for your dates and get their suggestions for places to go when you are ready. Make them part of the solution. You do not owe any explanation to the friends really. However, since you seem to be rather proper and courteous, you could mention to them that you will start dating soon and find out if they would be okay with you bringing someone by when there are group functions. One of them might even introduce you to someone. As cliché as it is, the saying “life is too short” is true. There are no guarantees when it comes to time, love or anything else. We have to make choices today to be happy and to purposefully choose activities to do and people to be around who bring us joy. It’s your life and you choose how to life it.
Dear Eager Beaver, On the mark…get set….go….! I am not one of your daughters or close friends, but I am hereby giving you permission to love again. I hereby grant you the go ahead to date, to hold hands, to laugh with someone over dinner, to buy cheesy cards and to allow someone to brighten your world. Your wife has been gone for over a year and you have been a gentleman about respecting her memory. Continuing like this when you long to be free would be making yourself a martyr. You are the father so set your daughters straight. Thank them for their concern and their support over the past year plus, but let them know it’s your life and you are climbing off the shelf, shaking off the dust and

Hyde Park on the Hudson Following the death of Daisy Suckly in 1991, a cache of papers was found beneath her bed containing an eye opening revelation. Daisy, a shy and retiring spinster, had carried on an affair with her famous distant cousin, US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whose presidency spanned the Great Depression of the 1930s through most of World War II. The movie shines a new light on one of America’s greatest presidents, who collaborated with Winston Churchill and Stalin to defeat Germany during the war and initiated the era of social welfare programs in America known as the “New Deal.” But Roosevelt (ably portrayed by Bill Murray) also had an intensely private life, much of which was spent at his mother’s bucolic estate known as Hyde Park in upstate New York. Here he conducted matters of state but also found an inner peace and serenity. Although his wife Eleanor stayed by Roosevelt’s side at public events and sometimes acted as an unofficial advisor, in reality, the couple was estranged, a marriage in name only. Roosevelt compensated for this by maintaining a series of relationships with women that he worked with and otherwise. One of these was his cousin Daisy. Daisy (Laura Linney), who lived with her mother in a modest Victorian house nearby to Hyde Park, bemoaned her life of genteel poverty and intense boredom. That is, until just prior to the onset of World War II, she was summoned to Hyde Park to visit her esteemed cousin. At first perplexed by the invitation, she is soon charmed by Roosevelt, who shows her his stamp collection and invites her for automobile rides through the countryside. Paralyzed by polio as a young boy, Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
Roosevelt uses braces and a wheelchair and drives a customized automobile with manual controls. It is during these drives that the cousins’ relationship begins to blossom. For me, the highlight of the movie is a visit to Hyde Park by King George VI and his wife, Elizabeth. This is the same George VI made famous in the movie The King’s Speech. As the first English monarch to visit the US, this was a momentous occasion, which took on even greater importance because the King was soliciting America’s assistance with the looming war with Germany. To say that there was a culture clash between the uptight and protocol obsessed monarchs and the casual nature of their American hosts is to put it mildly. The Queen was particularly upset when she learned that at a picnic the next day, the President and First Lady were going to serve hot dogs. In the end Roosevelt and the King forged a close relationship – one which would go a long way in assisting Britain with its war efforts. Hyde Park on the Hudson offers a refreshing insight into a man who overcame disability to lead a full rich life and become one of America’s most important leaders. 6

An Anthology of Fun Writing as a career or even a pastime is often regarded as a mundane or boring occupation. In fact it is anything but; it demands that you research your subject, delve deeply into all facets of your story and make sure that you have presented an accurate account. The benefit to the writer is that he learns much more about the subject than a mere observer. In the case of my new book, The Eating and Drinking Guide to the BVI, it became not only a labor of love but a pleasurable experience of imbibing. The NEW (4th Edition) Drinking and Eating Guide to the BVI is a fun book. It leads the reader to the best bars and restaurants in the BVI and hopefully you’ll be chuckling all the way there. The fun part for me, as the author, was sampling the various offerings from the establishments and checking on unique features to spice up the limericks, a feature of the book and a guide for Hannah Welch, the very talented cartoonist, who did all the graphics. In order to write an authentic report I often had to sample Bushwackers, Painkillers, Dark and Stormys, Mai Tais…. When two or three bars were on my agenda for one day the list of sampling was quite long… Well that’s enough of that, but the dribbles down my T shirt and the empty aspirin bottle by my wash basin speak volumes – thank goodness I took notes. One of the unique aspects of this guide is that the bars and restaurants were invited to offer a FREE drink to those with the book, in order to entice them in. So
often boaters and visitors stay aboard their chartered yachts or villa verandas without exploring the BVI’s wonderful bars and eateries. This idea of offering a freebie has really worked and now many restaurants are offering a free bottle of wine with dinner. The vouchers are in the back of the book. The book also contains drink and food recipes of the restaurant’s specials. There are short stories of a Caribbean nature as well as other fun comments, tongue-in-cheek one-liners and cryptic comments. The cartoons illustrate the limericks and the whole mélange is designed to make a souvenir of a Caribbean adventure. Even so it is to be feared that most people buy the book for the freebies and not for the literary brilliance… ahem… of the author. Note: The author is not responsible for hangovers or stitches, stomach cramps and heart attacks from excessive merriment and hilarity.
