Cool Parties – Hot Music It’s finally here! The 2014 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival at Nanny Cay, which will turn into party central from March 31st to April 6th. Now in its 43rd year, the regatta known for its “warm water and hot racing” is upping the ante and adding “cool parties – hot music” to its repertoire! The event kicks off on Monday, March 31st where there will be a Welcome Party at Peg Legs and sailors can register for the Sailing Festival that runs from Tuesday until Thursday. Thursday is Maritime Heritage Day and this year an extra special treat is in store when the Queen’s Relay Baton will be handed over to one of the Tortola sloops at around 4pm. The Regatta Village at Nanny Cay opens at noon on Thursday, April 3rd and the beach bar area will be awash with eager sailors happily discussing tactics for the race days ahead. Registration for the Regatta will be open from noon-6pm with a skippers briefing at 5:30pm. The fun then really kicks off with the Annual Mount Gay Rum Welcome Party, followed by Nichole Raab who will give an aerial performance above the sands as Aragorn’s Fireballs light up the night sky. The evening will end to the strains of Final Faze.
Friday, after a full day of some of the best racing in the Caribbean, the boats will arrive back to the sounds of the steel pan band, Shooting Stars that will get everyone into the groove for their evening ahead. Nichole Raab will be flying through the skies with her aerial performance before Singing Chef, Al Broderick and the Last Resort Band gets everyone rockin’ to his distinctive beat. Following the racing on Saturday will be the everpopular swimwear fashion show – this year showcasing the designs of Tortolan designer, Kirstin Frazer and her Tréfle brand. Later, dance the night away with your toes in the sand to the reggae sounds of Quito and The Edge. Sunday will wrap up the racing and the colorful Mocko Jumbies will dance and play to welcome weary sailors back to the village and everyone gets ready for the Award Ceremony at 5:30pm. Only the best will take home an award, but there will be more fun for all later when Showtime Band take the stage for the final party. So head to Nanny Cay and enjoy the warm water, hot racing – cool parties and hot music! See the ad for a full list of events and timings.

Ask Koren Brother’s Won’t Repay Mom Ask Koren Dear Koren,
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
My mother is very ill and I know she had lent some money to my two brothers to start their business together. She recently made me her power of attorney and since then I have asked them for the money and they are saying that agreement is between her and them. That 15,000 could go a long way to pay for her care now and her funeral eventually. I am struggling to take care of her and I know when she passes, they will not give it back because there is nothing in writing. What do I do? –Daughter
and as her child, you do have the rights to look into her best interests. Her care should not be dependant only on what money she has, when she has at least three children, maybe more that you didn’t mention. Why not get a weekly or monthly cost for her care and divide the amount equally between everyone, so that you do not have to be the one struggling alone. If someone is unemployed and has no income, that person can give their time or help in some other way. I hope this situation does not turn into a power struggle for you and your brothers. I’m hoping there is no jealousy on their part or any maliciousness on yours. The common thread here should be the love and concern for your mother and that should override any differences. As difficult as it is, try to keep the business side of the matter from turning into a personal situation that divides the family.
Dear Daughter, So many cases of sibling rivalries are born out of financial issues and they have the potential to damage what should be loving relationships. Maybe you can speak with a lawyer to figure out the best way to handle this situation. Maybe they think that you want the money and it’s not your mom asking so if she is still of sound mind and able to speak for herself then the best thing would be to let her ask them for it, or get them to sign a promissory note. This way, if they do not pay it back at some point, legal action could be taken against them. At least they are not denying they got the money. If she cannot speak for herself then that makes it more problematic. As her power of attorney

Honoring the “Big Man” Honored in 2002 by the Pirates for his contributions to BVI softball, Berth ‘Big Man’ Henley will have the 2014 BVI Softball Association league which opens at 4 p.m. on Saturday, run in honor. “This village of East End and Long Look and the BVI in general, have had sterling service in softball from Berth ‘Big Man’ Henley,” former BVI Softball Association president Walwyn ‘GM’ Brewley noted, adding that he has represented the BVI on every national team assembled during his career. “When he gets out there on the mound, you’re looking at arguably, the best pitcher who has ever pulled on a uniform in the British Virgin Islands and I still think that is so,” Brewley said, pointing out that he didn’t get where he is by chance. “Berth worked to achieve all those things. He was the kind of guy, that if you went up against him today and got a couple of hits, he is going to study you. The next time you meet him, he is going to give you two strikeouts-even three – for those hits you got against him. That’s the kind of guy he was. He studied the batters, not only here, but he did the same when we went abroad. He was the unofficial scout for the other pitchers.” Former Blue Wings player Roy ‘Picko’ Pickering, who played against Bert and on national teams with him said when softball was at its peak, to get strike out was a cardinal sin, let alone to be strike out with the bases loaded and nobody out. “When Berth did it to the Astros, we all laughed, because we had it to be a joke, because we didn’t know what was to come,” he recalled. “Next came the Marlins who were called the run machine – they got the same dose of medicine. He did the same thing to Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

the Blue Wings. The Royals in recent times suffered thesame fate. He was just dominant.” The ‘Big Man’ tag became attached to Berth when he played with the Atoms in the late 70s. “The fellows from East End would tell teams ‘in order to beat us, you have to beat our big man and that’s where the name came from,” Brewley noted in 2002. “But tonight, we are honoring a great man. A great pitcher in Berth ‘Big Man’ Henley.” Henley played with the Rams and Vikings in St. Thomas; Invaders, Marlins, Atoms, Roots and Pirates in the BVI during his 35 year career. Henley was a catcher and first baseman before settling on the mound. “I got into pitching and I loved it,” he explained. “I was one of the guys who never dwelled on a victory, but to be truthful, after I did the job, I forgot about it.” In one of his last playoff games, Henley fanned a record 18 Bombers batters. He won the strike out award in 1986, ’87, ’88, ’90, ’91 and ’92. He was the league’s MVP in ’88 and ’89 and had the lowest ERA in ’79, ’85, ’95 and 1999. 6

Galley Gourmet Goes International When I first arrived on island in 2004, I worked for a while as a chef on a crewed charter boat. Being pretty much straight off the plane from London, I was very new to island living and boats in particular – however, I was so happy to be here in the Caribbean, I just jumped straight in and pretty soon was cooking up a storm! One of the best things I enjoyed about working on a charter boat though was the camaraderie between other crews. Everyone is there to give a helping hand, whether it is to fix an engine or give recipe suggestions when faced with guests who could spring on you their special dietary requirements! It was around this time that I first met Lisa Mead, an Australian born chef who trained at the Culinary Institute of Queensland and who had worked in a variety of international restaurants. Lisa arrived in the BVI in 2003 where she quickly earned herself a great reputation working as a chef on charter boats. She is also a great fan of cooking shows, and it was while watching one on Viaggio, a 74’ motor yacht where she currently works, that Lisa had her idea of creating her own show which involved featuring some of the BVI’s most talented chefs cooking in a galley. So she spoke with Andrew Cox, the owner and manager of CBN (Caribbean Broadcast Network), who had also been eager to produce a local cooking show and, as Lisa said, “It was a match made in heaven” and her show Galley Gourmet with Chef Lisa was born. She describes the show as a “magazine-style” program that combines a sprinkle of easy going chat with some serious cooking.” The first show aired in 2011, and soon became one Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
that included both at sea and land based locations. The show, she explains, focuses on “showcasing the wonderful cross section of talented chefs and bartenders, both local and international throughout the BVI.” Amongst the chefs she has featured in the show are Davide Pugliese, Executive Chef at Scrub Island Resort, Imran Ashton, Chef and Owner of Plumrose Restaurant in Road Town and Chef Regis Bourdan from Brandywine Bay. Just last week, Lisa came in to tell us the great news that her show is to be syndicated in conjunction with Carib Vision from 1st June 2014 and will be seen throughout the Caribbean area and the Tri-State area of New York. Carib Vision are also in talks with Canadian Networks for future programming there. So it is onwards and upwards for this talented chef who thought of a great idea, made it happen and has not looked back since! So, tune in to Galley Gourmet with Chef Lisa on CBN – Channel 51 (see CBN Website for the program schedule). 14

The Pirate Fairy From the world of Peter Pan comes The Pirate
Fairy, a swashbuckling new adventure about Zarina (voice of Christina Hendricks), a smart and ambitious dust-keeper fairy who’s captivated by Blue Pixie Dust and its endless possibilities. Oh yea, we learn in this movie that Pixie Dust comes in different colours, not just the yellow that we’ve seen in the previous movies. Zarina is a fun character because she doesn’t fit in with the other fairies. Instead, she's interested in the secret alchemy of pixie dust, and creating her own bold new concoctions, something that doesn’t sit well with the fairy elders. You see Zarina believes that the
